Mercedes has shrunk its futuristic EQS flagship into a more affordable, but still wildly luxurious EV.
The Mercedes-Benz EQE joins the brand's growing family of electric vehicles, offering many of the same strengths as the larger EQS sedan but in a more affordable package. With a stylish exterior design, a tech-filled interior, and an impressive driving range, the EQE makes a strong case for itself against other premium EV competitors.
Slinky Silhouette, Yet Understated
From the front, the EQE looks remarkably similar to the EQS with its sleek headlights and closed-off grille. The side profile shares the EQS' arched roofline, although the rear end is a bit more truncated. Overall, the EQE has an elegant yet understated shape that lacks the visual excitement of rivals like the Porsche Taycan. It's handsome, sure, but not a real head-turner.
Inside, the EQE gives buyers the option of Mercedes' avant-garde Hyperscreen infotainment display, stretching a massive glass panel across the entire dashboard. More affordable models get a still-sizable 12.8-inch central touchscreen. Either way, the cabin is a tech-lover's paradise with crisp digital displays, ample customization, and the latest MBUX voice assistant.
Spacious For Four
While rear headroom is a bit tight due to the sloping roofline, the EQE offers decent room for four adults along with a 430-liter trunk. That said, the Porsche Taycan and Tesla Model S provide more cargo space. The lack of a front trunk is also a demerit compared to those rivals.
On the plus side, the EQE's interior is impeccably constructed from premium materials. And with Mercedes' available air suspension, the ride quality is exceptional, smoothing out all but the nastiest potholes.
The bigger story is range. Mercedes estimates the EQE 300 can travel up to 384 miles on a charge, though real-world figures will likely land in the 300-mile vicinity. Even so, that's hugely impressive range that tops many competitors. When you do need to recharge, the EQE can add up to 264 miles of range in 30 minutes using a blazing-fast 170kW DC charger.
Premium Electric Without The Excess
With an elegant (if reserved) design, tons of tech amenities, a serene driving experience, and outstanding range, the Mercedes EQE seems to hit all the key selling points for a premium electric luxury sedan. Yet it does so without an overly flashy persona or an excessive price tag compared to the EQS. For many EV buyers, that balance could make the EQE just right.
Pricing starts at $74,900 for the EQE 300, while the high-performance EQE 53 AMG kicks off at a steep $107,900.
