Up To 7h 20m: Air Canada’s New Longest Boeing 737 MAX Route

  • Air Canada recently added three routes to its summer 2025 European network. There's Toronto to Prague (a route which was last served by leisure-subsidiary Rouge in October 2019), there’s Montreal to Naples (an airport pair not previously served by any airline), and then there’s Montreal to Porto (a service which will compete directly with Air Transat's Airbus A321LRs). Only Montreal-Porto will be on Air Canada's Boeing 737 MAX 8.

I flew for Fiji Airways. Our longest non stop flight was from Nadi to Honolulu clocking in at 2760 nautical miles. Back in the day the route was covered by both the B737-800 and 700. Very capable aircraft to say the least. My average block times ranged from 06:50 to 07:15. The 07:15 block accounted for a very long taxi from the terminal to RWY 08-R, referred to as the “Reef Runway”. Far cry from when I started flying the Boeing 737 in the 80s. A long flight was considered from Newark to West Palm Beach.

I flew the Transat A321LR between Toronto and Manchester and actually enjoyed it. Flight was comfy, service was good, and the crew moved us to better seats after take off.
Compare that to flying that route on a Thomas Cook 757-200 when Transat code shared with them, and it felt cramped and service was average.

In March I flew Copa Airlines' Max 9 from PTY to EZE and back. Copa does it right and puts lie flat seats on their Max 9 aircraft. Unlike most other carrier that operate single-isle jets, Air Canada’s cabin configuration isn’t optimized for overseas flights and leads to an uncomfortable experience for both passengers and crew. Most carriers opt for a tradition full aft galley with traditional positioning of lavoratories in the back. However, Air Canada’s 737 MAXs feature a tighter half galley with the two lavs sandwiched in the back as well. This is sub-optimal at best and has more drawbacks.

The problem with AC's MAX on YUL-OPO is that its business class is still the old-style 2+2 recliner configuration. That was designed for 3-hour short haul flights. On a 7-hr red-eye, business class passengers expect lie-flat seats. Flydubai, COPA and Singapore Airlines have all put lie-flat seats in their MAX without reducing the number of economy class seats. AC needs to up their games if they want to put their MAX onto European routes. Or else the "business class" section should only be called and sold as Premium Economy. Westjet is indeed selling their MAX premium section as PE instead of Business on their European routes.

I'm not liking the trend of the 737 Max and A321XLR/neo being used for longer transatlantic routes. Air Canada loves doing these types of routes in Halifax for transatlantic flights (WestJet also does this) and the longest domestic flight (Halifax-Vancouver) in Canada, all on the 737 Max. Sometimes though they'll use an A330 on a route as short as Montreal-Halifax and vice versa. At least Air Canada's 737 Max's are pretty nice, but there's still a flight time limit where its bearable.

Forgetting climate emergency, I don't have a problem flying in a narrowbody. I do have a problem with a 7 hour flight on a plane configured to serve1 hour hops between Montréal and Toronto, with limited galley capacity and limited toiletsand 0 seat pitch. Deploying domestic 737s instead of waiting for 321s hopefully configured for long haul will give AC a bad image (but then again, that is what AC is striving for) and people will choose Transat.
Air Canada needs to realise that Transat has improved since its charter carrier days, and that Air Canada's continued quest to drop its service to the charter era Transat levels is misquided and has already brought it to below Transat's levels.

As cabin crew I avoid like the plague working ultra long haul narrow body flights. As a passenger I avoid sitting in a seat for a long haul narrow body flight. Just because a narrowbody can do the distance doesn't mean it should. From purely environmental point of view, I'd like to see the fuel burn per person for a whole bunch of 737s doing 7 hours point-to-point flights vs hub-spoke approach with large aircraft doing the trans-atlantic to a hub and then train or short domestic flights for last mile. And I have to wonder about the trans-atlantic airway capacity if instead of a few hundred wide bodies, they start flying thousands of 737s and seeing Ryannair compete against Southwest between Dallas and London on 737s.

@@christopherescott6787 Nope. DC8 was narrower and 707 only a little longer in the cabin. Number of engines makes no difference to the passenger experience. The 707 and DC8 only flew slightly faster too so no difference there. They were an order of magnitude more dangerous than the 737Max could ever dream of so there is that. Legroom was an airline decision of the time. If 707s and DC8s somehow flew today, they would gave exactly the same legroom as any other aircraft. People have no idea how good they have it these days. Just because small narrow bodies can fly longer with an extra fuel tank, doesn’t mean you send them 6-7-8 hour trips. How safe is this? Are 737 pushing the limits by flying such long routes? What are their real-world max range?

    • @juliogonzo2718

The max 8 has a range of 3500 Nautical Miles so that's well within its capabilities.

They have ETOPS certification. And the range of the Max is enough for these routes. Even the 737 NG flew transatlantic with Westjet from Halifax and St Johns.
