I found a complete hour of Alan Freed's WINS Rock n Roll Party from l955 and have listened to it over and over again. the excitement, the passion he exudes is an inspiration to me every day. Alan was a true pioneer and may his legacy never be forgotten.
Now THIS is what good music is all about, people!Even now,we're still dancing to & simply enjoying this glorious sound from the bygone era of the 1950s--when Rock n' Roll was born!
Wonderful combination of Swing Band horns and early Rock 'n' Roll! I didn't know Freed could also sing! That guy was a real hepcat. So sad he had to take the rap for "payola" and lose his career and health in the process. Alan Freed definitely was a Rock 'n' Roll innovator!
I remember seeing some Alan Freed films on NIGHT FLIGHT. Yes....Alan actually SANG during this song,LOL!! (thought the song was "Rock A Beatin' Boogie).....hee hee
Look at the dad in the video, survived D-Day, fought across Europe, and all he wants to do is read his paper, but his rascal kids are watching this coloured fellow blowing a saxamaphone and playing new fangled music on the cathode ray oscilloscope. Lol
@darilc1966 Payola was an acceptable practice in the fifties and Freed was made an example- when everyone was doing it- and as far as small labels, Freed gave every small black group an opportunity to be heard. He did more for American race relations than most of the 60s activists!
Congress, in 1959-1960, investigated the fact that d.j.'s accepted payment ("payola") from record companies to play records on their shows. Freed was honest enough to admit that, yes,he accepted such payments. Consequently, he lost his job. He was able to get back on radio but at a much lower level. Sadly, he got depressed and alcoholic and died in 1965 age 43. The payola investigations were an attempt to destroy rock 'n' roll. Didn't work but we did get stuck with Top 40 format.
This is so correct, the older generation were stuck in a "Jazz Timewarp" and believed that the kids "Should be seen and not heard", in other words "What was good for us is good for you"
GONE WAY TOO SONG....btw,ALAN FREED actually had a career after that payola scandal...KDAY in Los Angeles, also KNOB....BUT he was fired for promoting his concerts. So sad!!
Without this guy there won't be any rock 'n' roll today, folks. If there is one man deserving the title "king of rock 'n' roll" it is Alan Freed!
I enjoy how obviously dubbed the vocals are, what a gem!

Hearing ALAN FREED sing....is psychedelic......you don't expect a DJ to sing in an instrumental song....

So sad!!
Yes so sad 😞 how his life ended. He was only 43.
Freed was hounded by the FBI, police and racists because he played and worked with the original black artists.
Shame on those who drove him down
The band is great but Freed can't keep time!
Alan did lots for the music, but had no rhythm at all. Zero timing
