Many thanks Sir, you just saved my day. I've got a firmware-crash yesterday and with the help of your video I was able to re-install my firmware without any problems at all! Greetings from Germany
You are most welcome. I am very happy to here I was able to help you rescue your router. Thanks for watching and the kind comments. All the best from Texas to you and all our friends in Germany.
Excellent! Thanks a lot, you saved my WDR3600 from being trashed. I followed exactly your instructions, except (obviously), had to change the name of the BIN file for my TPlink model. Works as a charm! Thanks again! :)
Thanks, helped me fix my archer C7. Had to flash it with an OpenWRT image though (5MB), since the router would keep on rebooting right before having downloaded the official TP-link firmware (15MB) over TFTP. All is good in the world now.
Richard, great tutorial. Thanks for your time and help making it. I followed it step by step but I was not able to unbrick my 4300 router. TFTP Server showed the file uploading, but after that iIt kept rebooting However, I tried the same steps but, instead of using the TPLink official firmware, I replace it with the file factory-to-ddwrt.bin from ddwrt. And it worked fine. Thanks again!
As strange as it was, it worked for me too! had same restarting problem, running on model 1.7 . this trick with DDwrt worked just perfect! thank you all!
Thanks for the tip! Flashing the original firmware did not work for me either but I remembered that I had Gargoyle/OpenWRT on it before I lost access and flashing the OpenWRT factory image fixed my bootloop issue!
+Wilfred Lowell I used the serial connection to show what was going on inside the router but while doing this procedure but it is not required or used to unbrick the router at all. Thanks.
Hey Richard! Thanks for taking the time to make these videos! I just got a WDR4300 v1.2 from a friend... He never did anything to it and the damn thing bricked itself believe it or not (saw another case like this on a forum) Anyhow, I was really hoping that the TFTP flash method you used in the video would work, though I had read that you had to strip the bootloader from the firmware file you planned on sending to it beforehand and I found a prestriped version of the stock firmware online... That didn't work (transfer never initiated) and neither did the complete firmware file such as the one you used in the video. More importantly though, I see one BIG and important difference thanks to your video... Your WDR4300 still connected (though intermittently) to the network card... Apparently long enough for the TFTP server to send it the firmware... In my case, it never shows up at all, not even for a few seconds... (the flashing lights on the device however do mimick yours) Does this mean I'm stuck with using a serial method? And if so... If I have access to an old desktop with a serial port, can I just strip off one end of a serial cable and solder it to the appropiate place? Thanks!!!
Jeffrey Schulman Are you holding the reset button for three seconds while powering it up? I did this with a version 1 not sure if it is the same for the V 1.2 . You do need the UART USB interface as it is not the same as a serial connection. I bought one on Amazon for $7.99 but you can get them cheaper. Here is the link for the one I used @1 and here is the video on how I did it ua-cam.com/video/t35Pei_eb6o/v-deo.html Thanks
Something strange but wonderful just happened. I own a TP-link wdr4300 v1.7. I decided to try DD-wrt but was concerned with bricking the router, so I followed the other video and flashed to the latest version of LEDE, and used Putty to install the Luci interface. Everything worked fine but I didn't really care for openwrt so I then decided to try out DD-WRT, so I flashed the router with the older Tp-link firmware 130319 like is recommended. That went well. So I was then ready to flash to DD-WRT and, not following the recommendation of NOT using a release newer than r25974, I decided what the hell and attempted to flash to the latest beta build of DD-WRT (r31899) anyway. The router rebooted and the WAN and LAN link lights worked and I had internet access, but.... After attempting to log in the router, I was greeted with a plain text-based login screen to DD-WRT and even after attempting to change the password it would not let me log in. It almost seemed like ti didn't flash completely. I performed a 30/30/30 reset but that did not help. s10.postimg.org/50mt5mt6h/ddwrt.jpg Unable to log into the router's GUI to flash back to the TP-link firmware, ( I couldn't even use putty to log in as root...it was refusing to connect to the default gateway) I followed the method of using tftpd to manually upload the Tp-link firmware to the router as described in this video. Apparently the flash did not take because here's where it gets weird....after rebooting I was greeted again with the DD-WRT plain text-based login. For some reason I decided to completely clear my Firefox browser cache and try logging in again. And after completely clearing the cache, I was then able to get to the full DD-wrt login screen, and even though the router did not flash back to TP-link firmware, it looks like DD-WRT now lets me log in. I will now connect the router up to my WAN and see if it works. s4.postimg.org/k0huq4evx/ddwrt2.jpg Looking at my tftpd log file it now appears that the router is looking for a connection on 192.168.0.86 and not 192.168.0.66. The log says "Connection received from 192.168.0.86 on port 2075. OACK: timout=3. So in the end it looks like DD-WRT was successfully flashed, but the browser cache has to be cleared before logging into 192.168.1.1.
Thanks for this, the only thing you didn't explain though was opening up the 'com5' PuTTY window you were using to monitor the router activity and thus get the required filename the router is looking for. It's just there and already open on your desktop ?!
I had almost trown out my router when I found your tutorial. I had done something wrong while setting up the router with OpenWRT. And the recoverymode in OpenWRT sucks very badly.. Couldnt connect to the router anymore nada. Recoverd the router with your tutorial. Saved myself a couple of Euro's. Weird thing is if I reflash with DDWRT or OpenWRT the router gives out an IP but I cant get to the router via the browser.. Would really like to have DDWRT running on it for my personal needs (also old router ran DDWRT so I kinda know how to do stuff with that). Not going back to OpenWRT though...
yo Richard sup, I got that same router but model 1.7 and so I got it from someone and it had an openwrt on it... I cant remember what I did but so my router got bricked. I can see wifi chnnels appears but I cant reach into it through the webconsole. anyhow, I tried your method and I can always manage to transfer the bin file into the router but it doesn't look like its actually installing it. needless to say the the wifi channels still appear when I turn it on with the name I assigned to it. any clue on what can I do without having the serial cable ? P.S. I cant find 1.7 version of bin to replace with on tp link site
+Wilfred Lowell If you are using this router (WDR4300 Version1) then the IP address for your computer should be set to 192.168.0.66 you can see this at 8:24 mark in the video. Follow my steps exactly and it should work for you. Thanks.
Thank you very much for this it worked great. Can I ask if through dd-wrt you got instant 1000mbps speeds through the LAN or did you have to mess with the settings? I can set everything up its just my speeds seem to stay around the 100mbps mark. Thanks.
+UKG-TV The LAN and WAN ports on this router are auto-negotiating which means that it senses the speed of the connected device and switches the speed automatically to match it. So if you plug a 1Gbps device to any of the ports they automatically match that speed likewise if you plug a 100mbps device to it. You most likely are connecting a 100mbps device to it that is why you are getting that speed. Also note that CAT5E cable is required to get a stable 1Gbps connection. Thanks.
+Richard Lloyd Thanks again for the reply. I am connecting an iMac and MacBook Pro both with gigabit ports via cat 5e cable to the router. Also connected is the Seagate Central NAS drive but transferring data to this (via time machine) is very slow running at 100mbps. I just wondered if there was something I was missing? Thanks again.
Hi, the router was running 3.14.3 Build 150518 Rev 70901n but has been flashed as per the instructions here www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/TP-Link_TL-WDR4300 using the files within this page. This gives me a write of around 30MB/s and a read of 45MB/s but was hoping for something in the region of 85MB write?
Richard, you are so awesome for making this video! thank you so much for taking the time to do that!!!! i was hoping you could maybe help me out - if you can. i can a wdr4300 router that is bricked after a bad firmware flash. i have followed your video and for some reason, i am turning on my router with the reset button pressed, release it after a few seconds, i see the router trying to download the file, i see the "progress bar" for 1-2 seconds, and then... nothing happens! nothing at all. what am i missing?
I am not sure what is happening. Check the log file in the TFTPD program. It may have the answer for you. If that does not shed any light on it try this procedure instead ua-cam.com/video/t35Pei_eb6o/v-deo.html Thanks.
Richard, Thank you so much for the video. Your video helped me revive my Tp-link wdr4300. Just some notes about the factory firmware on tp-link support download section: TL-WDR4300_V1_121226(Unifi) works for me, however TL-WDR4300_V1_151104_US does NOT work and it looks like TL-WDR4300_V1_151104_US will brick the router and the result will be exact same as the symptoms that you had, all light flashing at the same time. therefore, please select TL-WDR4300_V1_121226(Unifi). btw, the file name for recovery file is also wdr4300v1_tp_recovery.bin
Thank you for your tutorial. I have the bricked buffalo whr g300n. I tried so many method to unbrick it without using serial connection but still cannot fix it. My router only has solid power light on (the other light were off when the router is powered on) and does not respond to the reset button no matter how long i pressed the button. Do you think I still able to unbrick it using your method? or I should use serial connection to unbrick it? thanks.
+sanjiwana arjasa I know this works on TP-Link routers. I can't attest for Buffalo routers. I guess you could try it but I can't say if it will work or not. Thanks.
Hello, Recently i get an WDR4300 V1.7 router. Unfortunately it was half-bricked… When i powered it on the power, the system and the 2,4GHz wifi leds constantly lit. I got no access to the router, the reset switch not worked, and when i put the wifi on/off switch also nothing happens. So i try the tftpd option. First attempt no luck, it seemed all ok, but the router then went into bootloop (all leds flashing continuously). But at least something changed to the state with which I received the device. Then i tried 4-5 times again, but nothing, the file was uploaded, but again bootloop. I tried with all 3 fw i found on tp-links website, but no luck. Then i become an idea: because i don’t know what fw was on the router (maybe something 3rd party) i tried it with an stripped fw, and the second try was successful, the router was unbricked. Stripped fw for some tp-link routers are here: www.friedzombie.com/tplink-stripped-firmware/
Hello there, my good sir! My question is how did you communicate with the bricked router on COM5 without an actual serial link? I mean the whole explanation of the video is really nice, but it is overcomplicated to this particular brick. With a simple first boot command from recovery mode everything should work just fine, but here I'm getting totally lost. Or am I missing something and you can really fetch all the info from the device WITHOUT an actual serial connection or is it simulated through ethernet? Thanks in advance for your explanation. Cheers!
hi, i'm italian (sorry for my bad english), I have an Archer C7 v1.1, yesterday i have retry the procedure whit TFPT server, and something append, the leds stop flashing, and only 3 led were on (power led, "sun" led, and the lan port attached to my pc). In Change Adapter Settings (windows) my lan adapter pass from "network cable unplugged" to "Unidentify network". At this point i try to connect to 192.168.0.1 ip adress, but nothing append. How much i must wait for the firmware loading? I try to reboot with power button, but at this point all leds flashing again.
+Pindol Try a 30-30-30 reset ua-cam.com/video/gczCzP9Rry0/v-deo.html then try this procedure again. It should take about the same about of time as it does on the video. Understand that I can't confirm that this works on a C7 as I don't own one. Thanks.
Dear Richard Lloyd, I tried your instructions for a bricked wdr3600, but I have the following problem.Tftpd shows that the file for my router is transfered, but at a very slow rate(about 1700bytes/sec), and as a result I loose the connection with the router at about 50% of the transfer.Do you have any suggestions other than the "serial" method? Thanks in advance
HarrisP This is the only method I know of other than the serial option. If you have a different computer you can try this procedure on that might do it. Thanks.
Hey, I need some help with my bricked WDR4300 v1.6. It's flashing all the time like yours. I've connected and uploaded the recovery file, but after restart it's still the same.
I have a video on a serial recovery for this router here that may save it for you: ua-cam.com/video/t35Pei_eb6o/v-deo.html this worked for me. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.
Hi, I have TL-WDR4300 Ver: 1.5. After a recent restart it stays in an error status (only the power LED and the Port LEDs from the connected PCs). So it isn't exactly the same problem --> no startup loop. I tried to recover with the method you described in the video - but i get no signs from the router wenn i power it on, while holding the reset button pressed. I see nothing in the logviewer of tftpd32. Any Ideas?
Usually that is a firewall issue. Make sure your windows firewall is turned off. If that does not work try it on a different machine. If all else fails try the serial recovery here: ua-cam.com/video/t35Pei_eb6o/v-deo.html Thanks
Nice video! Can you tell with is work on TL-1043nd V1? I try but I don't have response on tftp. No Syslog or Log View. Only change from ip 192.168.0.66 to 127.0.0.1. Any tips? Great job!
First off make sure you turn off any and all firewalls you are running including the built in windows firewall. I suggest that you follow the video I have for the WR841N here ua-cam.com/video/0k1sxwX5pMk/v-deo.html if all that does not work for you try a different computer. Tell me how it went for you, I am interested in getting it fixed for you. Thanks and all the best.
Richard Lloyd both firewall and antivírus até turned off. Ip as well configured. I will try no a diferent computer. Maybe the reset button are diferent! I dont know! I Just Watch your another video! Great work!
Thank you for the video. I flashed tomato in mine. Don't know what happened but I must have removed or deleted something. I have tried this many times and I see the router requesting the bin file (wire shark) but it never downloads to the router. i have renamed the file to match. I have the firewall turned off. I read some place the bin file had to be a certain size. Could this be true?
Hello! Can I use that method to work around Luci-SSL mode failure? I have done Luci but I get many automatic expired session warnings and webapp stops to work due to a corrupted file.
How do i find out what i should name my "WR1043nd" firmware. And how do i watch the routers workingroutine on putty. In my case the connection gets terminated when i restart the router, so i cant watch the restart or flashing procedure like you richard.
In order to see putty you need a serial connection. I only included that in this video for the sake of seeing what is happening inside the router but it is not at all required for the instructions in this video to work. Thanks.
Hi Richard, thanks for the sharing. After following the instructions, I can see the firmware successfully downloaded through the TFTP Server. However, the router does not reset after that and it goes back to the 'ALL Lights blinking' mode. Is there anything else I can try? Thanks.
Hi Dear Richard Connection received from 192.168.0.2 on port 3621 [21/08 08:34:49.323] Read request for file . Mode octet [21/08 08:34:49.323] OACK: [21/08 08:34:49.354] Using local port 59115 [21/08 08:34:49.355] : sent 7425 blks, 3801265 bytes in 2 s. 0 blk resent [21/08 08:34:51.493] Recovery file uploaded but my TL-WR840N V5 is still blinking and in my connections lan adapter is unplugged !!! I don't know what I do!!!!! Any Suggestion?
I don't see why not? The version numbers on TP-Link routers are not typical a 1.0 version and a 1.7 version are still version 1 and will use the same firmware. Give it a shot. Thank you so much for commenting and watching. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀
You're most welcome. I'm glad and very happy to know that I could help you. Thank you so much for watching, commenting and the very kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀
Richard , I have v1 version of same router, I have everthing configured correctly but the router wont take a flash, Ihave tried both file names in tftpd (6F01A8C0.img and wdr4300v1_tp_recovery.bin). the router does not cycle and history unknown, however it does assign ip adress , 192.168.1.1 but there is no web UI and also telnet does not respond. DO you think it is worth trying the serial interface, perhaps it is looking for a diffrerent filename, I do thin it has a ddwrt given I got it from a tech hub.thanks
Most certainly it's worth trying the serial recovery. Here's the video on how I did it: ua-cam.com/video/t35Pei_eb6o/v-deo.html I recovered mine 2 years ago and it's still working great today. Thanks.
I followed a guide but I bricked my router, it keeps flashing. I have the TP-Link archer C5 v1.2 and I cant see the firmware rescue file. I did something like cd /tmp mtd -r write bin linux. Now my router is keep flashing the leds.
Hello, shall you help me? when i am uploading image to briked router progress stop about 80% a progres stop here and window has close without patching of router. Where i do mistake ??
I'm not sure why it didn't work for you but I suggest trying the same procedure on a different computer and if that doesn't work then the only other fix I have is the serial repair video here: ua-cam.com/video/t35Pei_eb6o/v-deo.html Thank you so much for commenting and watching. I appreciate it greatly. Subscribe, Click The Bell and stay tuned! All the best.👍😀
Hi Richard I have an Archer C7 like this problem, but follow your steps the problem persist, do you have another way ou hint to solve my problem? Thanks!
I have a procedure for the C9 here ua-cam.com/video/AU8RyW82Z2M/v-deo.html Perhaps that will work for you but if it does not you can try using a serial connection method here ua-cam.com/video/fme7kwTkttk/v-deo.html Thanks.
Richard, i have same situation, my router flashin light same as you show, i do all as you say in video, but after i download file in to it , it continue blink as in 0.52, but you say it must blink with different lights ? What i need to do?? It's bricked forever ? Have another way to bring it back to life?? And i haven't Com5 Putty screen as you show on video.
Andrey Kapustin Did you download the latest firmware file from TP-Link? If so try the others. The only way to see the COM 5 putty screen is to have a serial connection to the router. Here is the recovery video where I use a serial connection to fix it: ua-cam.com/video/t35Pei_eb6o/v-deo.html
You maybe able to do so but seriously the breakout USB adapter is $6.99 at Amazon: amzn.to/1u7Pmd8 and I show how to recover it here: ua-cam.com/video/t35Pei_eb6o/v-deo.html Thanks.
You're most welcome. I'm glad and very happy to know that I could help you. Thank you so much for watching, commenting and the very kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀
Hi Richard, I followed your instructions with attention. The modem does copy the firmware but just after copying it reboots automatically and goes back to the all-lighs blink state (except the 5GHZ wireless light that is not blinking). Is there anything else that could come to your mind that I could try? Thank you so much for this video.. Paulo
Not sure if you can do it with this procedure but after you get it running with the above procedure you can return it to the stock firmware using this ua-cam.com/video/H_qZLOMvFLA/v-deo.html Then you can follow the instructions here to install openwrt wiki.openwrt.org/toh/tp-link/tl-wr841nd
No , you can not due to the new FCC rules, the newer US versions of TP-LINK 4300, mine is 1.7 bought new last week, see forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php?pid=333990#p333990. In this forum they say you can do this by installing ddwrt and then revert to an old version of original firmware and then install openwrt . I saw in your video that you have installed ddwrt which version you recommend for the wdr4300 ?
Hey Richard I've really liked you explanation for unbrick the router but how did you get to the ip address 192.168.0.66. Unfortunately with this IP address I could manage to unbrick it. is there any solution to know the ip of the router?
Hi Richard. I have this WDR4300 v1 bought from Hong Kong (Asia), do you think it uses the same file name for firmware and IP as well? Because I tried with 192.168.0.66 and with no luck..
I can't really confirm that as I don't have access to an Asian WDR4300. I also have a solution for this using a serial connection that may actually help you answer those questions here: ua-cam.com/video/t35Pei_eb6o/v-deo.html Thanks
Hey Mr.Richard, How are you? After try upgrade WDR400 to last version, my router show me only power led freezing. The led port blink after connect data cable, could you help me please? I dont understand how to connect router by putty, could you explain? Thanks a lot.
Leandro Rodrigues Barbosa In this procedure connecting to putty is not necessary. I only show it so that you can see what is actually going on in the router. It would require you to connect to the router with a serial connection but again you do not need to connect to the router with putty. Follow the procedure as I state in the video (no putty required) step by step and you should do fine. I also have another video on how to recover this router but it requires a serial cable to recover it. Here is the video for that should you need it ua-cam.com/video/t35Pei_eb6o/v-deo.html Thanks
Richard Lloyd Hi, From Brazil, I,m have this uart, is compatible? produto.mercadolivre.com.br/MLB-639974264-usb-uart-6pin-connector-module-for-arduino-nano-compatible-_JM
hey Richard! In this video, your router blinks every 4 seconds. My router blinks every second. Is this a same thing to solve my routers problem? I tried to hard reset my router for 3 seconds as what you told in this video but nothing happens.
I used putty connected to the serial connector with a USB/serial adapter. You can NOT see the putty output without it. I do explain that in the video at the 6:00 minute mark. If you want to see the Putty view here is a video that explains how to do that ua-cam.com/video/t35Pei_eb6o/v-deo.html Thanks.
Richard Lloyd I see.. I got only one problem. I followed your instructions step by step until turning it on while holding down the WPS/Reset button for 3seconds, nothing happens. No progress in Tftp Server. Im using Windows 8 configuring this setup, is there a difference when using different OS? Anyway thanks for response! :)
Try the same procedure on a different computer the OS should not be a factor. Also if you can turn off the Windows firewall or any other third party firewall you are using before you begin the procedure. Make sure you enable the firewall after you are done. Thanks.
Thanks a lot I did it with a tp link td-8968 v2 last firmware version I change the name to td8968v2_tp_recovery, I dont know which ip worked as I tried every IP it never showed anything in the logs, I used all the ips here suggested. I was resigned at the end as I wasnt able to see any logs. but finally went i went back to the original auto ip it worked. I even tried 192.168.1.1
ten piseth I don't have access to this router so I can't really comment directly. I would take a guess that would be the same procedure and that the file name is w8970v1_tp_recovery.bin. Thanks please tell me if that worked for you please.
Hello Richard, I follow your tutorial step by step, but when it start to loading the Firmware through TFTP It flashes and didn`t upload the firmware. I used to have a OpenWrt Firmware, what can I do? I would really appreciate if you can help me.
The router doesnt go in to recovery mode, (holding reset + Power on), doesnt do anything... the router just reverts to the all-lights-flashing syndrome... Accordingly, thet tftpd programm doesnt transfer the .bin file over ... Suggestions ? Many thanks
+John L Have tried this proc on 2 different PCs...same result, still bricked...Can't say that I'm impressed with this unit ... the reset button does nothing, and it doesnt have a hole / pin reset, like the most basic of units
Thanks for taking the time to reply. My flashing light sequence is not the same as seen in your videos, but will give your alternative method a look. Cheers, John
Hello! First, thank you for your video. Second, do u know how to enter recovery mode in 4300 v1.3? I did what u show on video and tftpd server got zero requests from tp-link client... I've tried to connect it on 192.168.1.66 IP aswell and switch it to Internet/WAN port still nothing happened.
Tomasz Szczepanik I son't have a V1.3 but usually there isn't too much difference from a V1 to V1.3 in TP-Link's site they would still call them both a V1. Did you try 192.168.0.66? If you did I would try 192.168.1.100. If all this does not work you could try a serial connection as I show in this video ua-cam.com/video/t35Pei_eb6o/v-deo.html Thanks.
Tomasz Szczepanik The serial connection will show you what IP it is looking for. Then you can do this recovery once you know what and where it is looking for it. Thanks.
+Tomasz Szczepanik Hi, did you already figure out the IP for your v1.3? If yes, I would really appreciate if you tell me - Had no luck soldering a serial connection so far..
I bricked router by installing openwrt firmware. Did exactly as you said and it ended up being stuck in the same loop you showed in 0:55 I guess I just need to buy new router from credible manufacturer. Saving 10 euros ended up throwing 50euro worth box out.
Ok thanks mate,Im on the right track from the expert could you please tell me how to make that bin file visible on my desktop?because when I try to Browse from Tftpd I can't see the file Thanks
Hello Richard, i am using your guide to unbrick my TPlink TL-WR1043ND V2.1 with some modifications i got from "wiki.openwrt.org/toh/tp-link/tl-wr1043nd". the problem is always when using the tftpd, the bin file is not being copied 100%, it always copies 66%, and then one time i moved on with the progress regardless of the 66%, and the installation was complete, i could ping the router on 192.168.1.1 and everything, but had no access to the webinterface. i checked the contents on some folders on the router using WinSCP, and while some files look fine, the content of others look like hydrographic symbols. any advices on that ? thanks in advance bro.
Make sure you turn off windows firewall and or any firewalls you may be running as well if you are using Anti-Virus software disable it as well and try it again. Make sure you turn all of them back on after you are done. If that does not work I would suggest that you use the serial/USB adapter method instead. Thanks.
thanks for your reply, firewall and antivirus are already disabled, and i also tried with multiple different firmwares, including the stripped original firmware to no avail. i am using the serial/usb connection though.
i have solved the problem, with a little player around with the commands.. first i erased then i used tftpboot 0x80060000 firmware.bin instead of tftp and walaaa, the rest is history :D thanks for the help dude
I have a TL-WDR3600 v1.4 that does not respond when trying to use the TFTP method. Wondering if anyone knows possibility firmware version maybe does not have a boot loader?
Nothing in the event log. My next move will be to try connecting through the UART pins and try communicating through PuTTy. The routers LED's activity all mimic your indication of a bricked system. Odd thing for me, the router was just fine running DD-WRT firmware and suddenly one day the LED's started the on-off routine. I am also replacing the power supply along with trying to restore a good boot.
Okay, got it working. Once connected through the UART, PuTTy displayed the boot loop. I then followed your remaining video details and restored to a working DD-WRT router.
+Richard Lloyd At 13:08 in your video, setup copy bin file to your router, and here with my router that NEVER HAPPENS, and I have the same problem with it like you. why i can't do the same?
Hi, thank you for your feedback. In this video you are using a serial connection to access the CLI of the router (correct me if I am wrong). Without serial connection how could I access the CLI of the router since it is not assigning any ip address to my laptop.
since it is not assigning me an IP address hence my DG is unknown. Therefore, I am unable to access the router. I am using TP Link Archer C7 V2. I was trying to flash it from DDWRT to OPENWRT and then back to DDWRT and during that process it went down. :( when I power it on all lights turn on for a send and then only power light is stays on.
To sum up. I want to inform you that I am not getting any ip address from the router since arp -a command is responding with "169.X.X.X" ip address. In short, I am unable to access my router. What could be the other solution??? Looking forward to hear from you.
Here they charge you rent for the routers they provide you with your internet service so it is best to buy your own instead of paying $10 a month for one. Outside of that even the routers you buy off the shelf are somewhat limited in their capabilities. The DD-WRT firmware is a third party firmware that unlocks the power of your router. In my case modifying the router allows me to run a web server, file server, print server, internet phone etc. Let's compare it to what the hot rod enthusiasts used to do to their cars. Their cars would run just fine if they never touched them but they ran much better after they modified them. But sometimes they pushed them just a little to far and they stopped working all together.
Richard Lloyd Ah, message received, here the router and Freeview tv update automatically, i pay £15 a month for unlimited broadband, the router is free (nothing in this life is free), if it breaks they send a new one. when it comes to computers im illiterate im afraid. I personally think the TV and internet should be free for everyone.
bmwnasher I have been saying TV should be free for years and I would have to add that the internet should also be free. It's hard to believe that you have to pay for something that advertises products to you 24/7. As you said nothing is free but I think in the future the advertisers will pay for the service not the consumer. Thanks.
You just saved me R$250,00 (Brazilian Real) or 63,83 US dollars! I was almost buying a new router. Thank you! So much!
Awesome. I have saved myself at least that much too! LOL! Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.
TFTP Server showed the file uploading, but after that iIt kept rebooting
However, I tried the same steps but, instead of using the TPLink official firmware, I replace it with the file factory-to-ddwrt.bin from ddwrt. And it worked fine.
Thanks again!
You are most welcome. That's a great tip. Thanks for watching and the great feedback.
Thanks.
man... you save my life. My english is not so good, but with your help, I make it! Thank you very very very much!
Pablo Cachafeiro You are welcome. I am very happy to hear you fixed it. Thanks for watching.
thank you ! used this method to recover my wdr3600
Glad you got it working again. Thanks for the feedback. All the best.
I performed a 30/30/30 reset but that did not help.
s10.postimg.org/50mt5mt6h/ddwrt.jpg
Unable to log into the router's GUI to flash back to the TP-link firmware, ( I couldn't even use putty to log in as root...it was refusing to connect to the default gateway) I followed the method of using tftpd to manually upload the Tp-link firmware to the router as described in this video.
I will now connect the router up to my WAN and see if it works.
s4.postimg.org/k0huq4evx/ddwrt2.jpg
Looking at my tftpd log file it now appears that the router is looking for a connection on 192.168.0.86 and not 192.168.0.66.
The log says "Connection received from 192.168.0.86 on port 2075. OACK: timout=3.
So in the end it looks like DD-WRT was successfully flashed, but the browser cache has to be cleared before logging into 192.168.1.1.
Glad you got it working again. Thanks for the feedback. All the best.
Thanks for this, the only thing you didn't explain though was opening up the 'com5' PuTTY window you were using to monitor the router activity and thus get the required filename the router is looking for. It's just there and already open on your desktop ?!
followed your instruction and I was able to unbrick my Archer C7. Thanks very much.... Subscribed
You are most welcome. Thanks for the valuable feedback on the Archer C7. I am sure it will help other people to know it worked on it. Thanks.
YOU SIR! are a GOD amongst men! You saved my ass on this one! Thank you soooooooooo much!
Wow! You are welcome. Thank you very much for watching and the very kind comments.
This video helped a lot! A big hug from Brazil!
Thanks! I recovered my WDR4300 using this.
You are most welcome. Still a great router. Thank you for watching, commenting and the kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.
Great video. Saved my wdr4300. Thanks.
You are most welcome. Thank you for watching and the kind words. All the best.
+Wilfred Lowell If you are using this router (WDR4300 Version1) then the IP address for your computer should be set to 192.168.0.66 you can see this at 8:24 mark in the video. Follow my steps exactly and it should work for you. Thanks.
Thanks for your demo,my tp link is alive at last
Thank you so much! I recovered my WDR4300 using this video.
Hi Rodrigo can you help me, i do the same but in Mac osx with Tftp Server but nothing happend, i need in terminal put something??? Thank you
Thank you. Now my bricked 4300 is working perfectly.
Great! You are welcome. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Thank you very much. I have the WDR3600 and managed to unbrick it via this method. Again thank you sir.
+The808producer You are most welcome. Happy to hear I was able to help you save the router from the trash bin. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Thank you so much! Just unbricked my C7 with your instructions :)
Great to hear! You are most welcome. Thanks for watching, the feedback and the kind words. All the best.
It worked with my bricked WDR4300 perfectly!
Thank you very much for your great instruction! :-)
+Ralf Rosenbaum You are most welcome. It makes my day knowing I helped you fix it. Thanks for watching.
I cannot thank you enough. Your guide was very detailed and descriptive! Thanks!
You are very welcome. Thank you for watching and the kind comments.
Thank you!!! Worked on my old TP-Link TL-WR1043ND router.
+UKG-TV What firmware revision are you using on the router?
Hi, the router was running 3.14.3 Build 150518 Rev 70901n but has been flashed as per the instructions here www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/TP-Link_TL-WDR4300 using the files within this page. This gives me a write of around 30MB/s and a read of 45MB/s but was hoping for something in the region of 85MB write?
thank you so much! had to use several images - but it worked! and the router is booting faster than ever before! :-)
THX!
You are most welcome. Thank you for watching, commenting and the kind words. All the best.
Tanks Tanks Tanks. My router return to life again.
+Marcelo Caldas You are most welcome. Thanks for watching.
same issue here but with wdr3500 looks easy enough worth to try :)
For sure! Thank you so much for watching and commenting. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀
Richard, you are so awesome for making this video!
thank you so much for taking the time to do that!!!!
i was hoping you could maybe help me out - if you can.
i can a wdr4300 router that is bricked after a bad firmware flash.
i have followed your video and for some reason,
i am turning on my router with the reset button pressed, release it after a few seconds, i see the router trying to download the file, i see the "progress bar" for 1-2 seconds, and then...
nothing happens! nothing at all.
what am i missing?
You are most welcome. Thank you for watching and the great feedback. I appreciate it.
Thanks.
Thanks man .. all work for ... tp WR1034 nd .... thanks again.
+cocancola You are welcome. Thanks for watching and the feedback.
Hello,
Recently i get an WDR4300 V1.7 router.
Cheers!
Thank you for posting this. It is very helpful.
+Jason Miller You are welcome. Thanks for watching.
hi, i'm italian (sorry for my bad english),
I have an Archer C7 v1.1, yesterday i have retry the procedure whit TFPT server, and something append, the leds stop flashing, and only 3 led were on (power led, "sun" led, and the lan port attached to my pc).
Richard Lloyd Hi I am just about to do this on my Version 6. Did you finally manage to make it work? Thanks in advance!
thank you so much! you have made this so easy
+John Hazelton You are welcome. Thank you very much for watching and the kind comment.
THANK YOU!
SAVED ME!!!!
You are most welcome. Glad to hear you got it fixed. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Great work!
Google turn off media sensing ..
I have WR941ND V5 same as you in TFTP only change ip to lacalhost ip in the past it worked and i unbricked mine but now didnt wrok idk why :(
Thank you for the video.
Thanks.
+DJ Sam Try a 30 - 30 - 30 reset and the try it again. if that does not help try it again on different computer. Thanks

Any Suggestion?
Which name should we use if we have a version 1.7 router?
I don't see why not? The version numbers on TP-Link routers are not typical a 1.0 version and a 1.7 version are still version 1 and will use the same firmware. Give it a shot. Thank you so much for commenting and watching. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀
@@richardlloydusa Everything worked flawlessly. Thanks!
You're most welcome. I'm glad and very happy to know that I could help you. Thank you so much for watching, commenting and the very kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀
Thank you! Works like a charm
You are welcome.
DO you think it is worth trying the serial interface, perhaps it is looking for a diffrerent filename, I do thin it has a ddwrt given I got it from a tech hub.thanks
to clarify the router does not have the cycling issue, just no web UI and I cant configure it otherwise.
+Joey Here are all my videos on routers, you may find a solution there ua-cam.com/play/PLnxXRLSlmSVNiENiN9wTejP6dtIqqmTya.html Thanks
Hello, shall you help me? when i am uploading image to briked router progress stop about 80% a progres stop here and window has close without patching of router. Where i do mistake ??
I'm not sure why it didn't work for you but I suggest trying the same procedure on a different computer and if that doesn't work then the only other fix I have is the serial repair video here: ua-cam.com/video/t35Pei_eb6o/v-deo.html

Hi Richard I have an Archer C7 like this problem, but follow your steps the problem persist, do you have another way ou hint to solve my problem? Thanks!
I have a procedure for the C9 here
ua-cam.com/video/AU8RyW82Z2M/v-deo.html
Perhaps that will work for you but if it does not you can try using a
serial connection method here
ua-cam.com/video/fme7kwTkttk/v-deo.html
Thanks.
Yes, latest. Thank's a lot. I will try another firmware.
Andrey Kapustin You're welcome. Good luck. Please tell me how it went for you. Thanks.
Richard Lloyd Nothing work's(( Yesterday a will try more... any solutions without serial port ?
Andrey Kapustin Do a 30-30-30 reset ua-cam.com/video/gczCzP9Rry0/v-deo.html and try this procedure again.
Great help my friend. :)
Thank you very much.
Richard, My Router does not go to Failsafe/tftp mode and Tftp32 gives error 2 in log
Can I diy a Uart from RPi3?
You maybe able to do so but seriously the breakout USB adapter is $6.99 at Amazon: amzn.to/1u7Pmd8 and I show how to recover it here: ua-cam.com/video/t35Pei_eb6o/v-deo.html Thanks.
Thanks bro. i will try on my wr941.

@@richardlloydusa do you know how to repair netgear ?
Thanks for your fast reply but how Im going to get the ip?
Hi Richard,
I followed your instructions with attention. The modem does copy the firmware but just after copying it reboots automatically and goes back to the all-lighs blink state (except the 5GHZ wireless light that is not blinking).
Is there anything else that could come to your mind that I could try?
Thank you so much for this video..
Paulo
You said modem, which router are you trying to recover?
Richard Lloyd Hi Richard, I'm sorry, that was stupid of me. It's a TP-Link N750/TWR 4300 v1, the same model of the one in the video
Well you are in luck because there is another method here is my video on that ua-cam.com/video/t35Pei_eb6o/v-deo.html Thanks.
Excellent video, extremely useful .
One question, I can use this method to install openwrt ?
The last one I used successfully with my WDR4300 is 01-02-2016-r28647 I upgraded to an Archer C9 Thanks
Hey Richard I've really liked you explanation for unbrick the router but how did you get to the ip address 192.168.0.66.
Unfortunately with this IP address I could manage to unbrick it. is there any solution to know the ip of the router?
Thanks. Revert to stock from DD-WRT Archer C7 V1.
+Alexander Kalinin You are most welcome. Thanks for watching.
Richard Lloyd. Mate, by any chance can you recommend an tftpd software for mac?
Looks like it is built in to OS X www.barryodonovan.com/2014/11/08/os-x-built-in-tftp-server Hope that helps. Thanks
Richard Lloyd Hi,
From Brazil, I,m have this uart, is compatible?
produto.mercadolivre.com.br/MLB-639974264-usb-uart-6pin-connector-module-for-arduino-nano-compatible-_JM
Leandro Rodrigues Barbosa It looks good. I think it will work. Make sure you set it to 3V. This one has a switch for that. Thanks.
hey Richard! In this video, your router blinks every 4 seconds. My router blinks every second. Is this a same thing to solve my routers problem? I tried to hard reset my router for 3 seconds as what you told in this video but nothing happens.
and also how to use the puTTy in this video. I want to know the internal view of my router. Thanks!
Bricked mean non responsive so this method should work for you too. Thanks.
Daedube Great, thanks for watching.
Thankyou so much !
+darknidja You are most welcome. Thanks for watching and the kind comment.
I really no idea now my router now useless.
Could you please help me ?
How to set ip for W8970v1 Adsl ?
And file recovery name.
ten piseth I don't have access to this router so I can't really comment directly. I would take a guess that would be the same procedure and that the file name is w8970v1_tp_recovery.bin. Thanks please tell me if that worked for you please.
I have test as what you told me to . But i have no luck.
I try for so long.
Not work.. anyway i can no what is my router ip required?
ten piseth I can only tell you that mine was on 192.168.0.66 on the recovery. Thanks
Thanks. .. for your help. .
ten piseth You are welcome. Thanks for watching.
Hello Richard, I follow your tutorial step by step, but when it start to loading the Firmware through TFTP It flashes and didn`t upload the firmware. I used to have a OpenWrt Firmware, what can I do? I would really appreciate if you can help me.
+Pedro Garretón Try the recovery using the serial connection instead. Here is the video for that procedure: ua-cam.com/video/t35Pei_eb6o/v-deo.html
What is the putty configuration?
The serial connection is not required for this repair. Thanks.
Ok with Archer c5 Thank you :)
+Claus Hansen You're welcome. Thanks for watching.
Great!
Thank you so much for commenting and the very kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀
Is this made with a serial cable?
hi Richard, how to fix a bricked TP-Link WR1043nd? thanks
+Chhiv Samath I would try the same procedure on it. What do you have to lose? Thanks
+Richard Lloyd, my router is working properly now. thank you so much
+Chhiv Samath You are most welcome. Thanks for watching.
Thanks
The router doesnt go in to recovery mode, (holding reset + Power on), doesnt do anything... the router just reverts to the all-lights-flashing syndrome... Accordingly, thet tftpd programm doesnt transfer the .bin file over ...
Suggestions ?
Many thanks
+John L Have tried this proc on 2 different PCs...same result, still bricked...Can't say that I'm impressed with this unit ... the reset button does nothing, and it doesnt have a hole / pin reset, like the most basic of units
+John L You may want to try this repair to see what is actually going on with it ua-cam.com/video/t35Pei_eb6o/v-deo.html Thanks.
Thanks for taking the time to reply. My flashing light sequence is not the same as seen in your videos, but will give your alternative method a look.
Cheers,
John
+John L All the best Sir. Thanks
I've tried both IPs.
Thank you for answer. I think i need to try out UART connection.
+Richard Lloyd I've actually got a v1.1 - is it the same as V1?
I bricked router by installing openwrt firmware. Did exactly as you said and it ended up being stuck in the same loop you showed in 0:55
I guess I just need to buy new router from credible manufacturer. Saving 10 euros ended up throwing 50euro worth box out.
+Roman Beljak Try the same procedure again on a different computer and see if it works for you. Thanks.
Do I have to download a resue folder Thanks mate
I tried this process and the router connects to TFTPD but apparently downloads but does not install and restarts out, what might be happening?
Ok thanks mate,Im on the right track from the expert could you please tell me how to make that bin file visible on my desktop?because when I try to Browse from Tftpd I can't see the file Thanks
i dont have any serial connection to my tp link router , how do i find out what name do i used to my tplink recovery file , i am using archer c7 v2
I have a video for that here: ua-cam.com/video/plaxiiSKlJI/v-deo.html Thanks.
thanks for the help @Richard Lloyd and by the way do you have a tutorial on how to configure a dd wrt router for online gaming ?
I will look into that and perhaps make a video. Thanks.
Great video! but I can't do it. Gran video pero no puedo hacerlo. tengo un 3220 (3g) I go to try other computer.
OK, Here is another video you can try ua-cam.com/video/0k1sxwX5pMk/v-deo.html Thanks.
Richard Lloyd Thanks friend. I could not do anything. Can I build a serial cable using one of the old Nokia?
I have a problem. load 60% anything more. Any solución?
Try the same procedure on a different computer. If it still does not work try this procedure instead ua-cam.com/video/t35Pei_eb6o/v-deo.html Thanks.
Hello Richard,
i am using your guide to unbrick my TPlink TL-WR1043ND V2.1 with some modifications i got from "wiki.openwrt.org/toh/tp-link/tl-wr1043nd".
the problem is always when using the tftpd, the bin file is not being copied 100%, it always copies 66%, and then one time i moved on with the progress regardless of the 66%, and the installation was complete, i could ping the router on 192.168.1.1 and everything, but had no access to the webinterface.
i checked the contents on some folders on the router using WinSCP, and while some files look fine, the content of others look like hydrographic symbols.
any advices on that ? thanks in advance bro.
Make sure you turn off windows firewall and or any firewalls you may be
running as well if you are using Anti-Virus software disable it as well
and try it again. Make sure you turn all of them back on after you are
done. If that does not work I would suggest that you use the serial/USB
adapter method instead. Thanks.
thanks for your reply, firewall and antivirus are already disabled, and i also tried with multiple different firmwares, including the stripped original firmware to no avail.
i am using the serial/usb connection though.
i have solved the problem, with a little player around with the commands.. first i erased then i used tftpboot 0x80060000 firmware.bin instead of tftp and walaaa, the rest is history :D thanks for the help dude
Awesome! Thanks for the feedback and watching. All the best.
good job
+Marius Ioana Thank you.
how do you connect router with ethernet cable to laptop...PuTTY works is this scenario??
You connect it to the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port on the laptop. Putty only works through a USB/Serial connection. Thanks
I respectfully greet you and please do a tutorial with Bricked TP-Link Archer C6 AC1200 Recovery / Rescue Unbrick without A Serial Connection.
I have a TL-WDR3600 v1.4 that does not respond when trying to use the TFTP method. Wondering if anyone knows possibility firmware version maybe does not have a boot loader?
+Lance McGrew Does your TFTP log show any activity? See this video ua-cam.com/video/plaxiiSKlJI/v-deo.html Thanks
+Lance McGrew That's awesome. Glad you brought it back from the brink. They are great routers. Thanks for watching.
Excellent! Thanks a lot.
Why in the video is showing Com port5 putty?
I done it all but router never copy bin file to itself. WHY?
+aleksandars88 Not sure what you mean? Thanks.
+Richard Lloyd At 13:08 in your video, setup copy bin file to your router, and here with my router that NEVER HAPPENS, and I have the same problem with it like you. why i can't do the same?
+aleksandars88 Did you follow the video exactly? If you did try the same exact procedure on a different computer. Thanks.
+Richard Lloyd Yes i did. I gave router to my neighbour, hi will try the same procedure
+aleksandars88 Great. Sometimes firewall or anti-virus software blocks the TFTP program. Thanks.
My Router Is TP-Link MR 3420 V2 can i do it without serial connection ?
+Ahmed Salem Give it a try. It will either work or not you really don't have anything to lose. Thanks.
:) okay ,, thanks
How to get that ip for my router?
thx, it helps to unbrick my TL-1043nd V4, the file name should be wr1043ndv4_tp_recovery.bin IP address of server 192.168.0.66
if we dont have a serial connection then how do we access the router and check the IP address???
Here is one possible way www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Obtaining_Router_IP Did you try the one I used in the video? Thanks.
when I power it on all lights turn on for a send and then only power light is stays on.
To sum up. I want to inform you that I am not getting any ip address from the router since arp -a command is responding with "169.X.X.X" ip address. In short, I am unable to access my router. What could be the other solution??? Looking forward to hear from you.
You`ve lost me here, do you get a lot of problems there?, here we sign up they send the router, connect, log in job done.
Thanks.
