  • British fishermen have been effectively banned from exporting mussels, oysters and scallops to Europe now that the UK has left the EU.
Shellfish workers in Cornwall say some are at risk of losing their homes because of a ban on exporting their product to countries in the European Union.

It's not a ban. It is third country rules. Just ask Nigel Farage, he was on the council that set up this regulation in 2008. To be fair, he only attented 1 of the 40+ meetings.

We chefs pay premium for these produce with most coming from eu after being sold by uk export. Relishing the thought of the uk market on fish soon as a result of abundance in stock, the food I can start putting on menu knowing its uk fished from our waters is going to be a honor to our fishing industry. Get celeb chefs to start cooking more fish from uk waters, This will drive demand.

No rule was changed by the EU, this is the rule for countries outside the EU agreed during the time Mr FARAGE was the UK fishing representative in the EU. Admittedly he rarely bothered his arse actually turning up for any meetings. Why would he? He was still collecting his nice big euro salary, I bet he will collect a Euro pension too, unlike those fishermen.

"On the 1st of Jan. their livelihood was banned .... the government said it's unacceptable that the EU has changed its position" - A shamefully misleading tone to this report. The EU has not changed its position, LBM (live bivalve molluscs) can't be imported into the EU from third countries, if they're fished in class B waters (unless they undergo purification) - the UK even pushed for this position when it was a member years ago.

Indeed Martyn... only that it was different then. Then this type of protective measure (allowing those inside the single market to benefit by excluding third parties) benefited the U.K. now it’s a different story so bad EU... maybe brexiters (specially people working in the primary sector) will finally understand the benefits of belonging to a single market.. specially fishers as the products they catch are not to the tasting to most U.K. consumers.. difficult times ahead

@Heid The Ba' no they didn't. Those were rules that existed, and that we helped write, before but we were just not subject to them due to us being a member of the EU. Obviously, we are subject to those rules now if we want to export into the EU as we are no longer a member. But, for argument's sake, let's say that the EU did move the goalposts, that they did change the rules, why would that matter to the UK. That's not a matter for the UK decide as the EU is free to do that without the UK'S approval, in the same way that we can now change our rules without the EU'S approval. It's completely up to them what policies they wish to do, as it is also up to us whatever policies we wish to implement.

Not a “new” rule at all! In fact it was the UK involved on imposing 3rd party bans on EU rules to protect their own fisherman! Now the UK is a 3rd party and these fisherman fall outside of the very EU protections that they voted to withdraw from .... am I missing something?!? 🤔

  • @stpd1957

No! GB is now a third country when trading with the EU. That decision was make by the UK government. Bivalve molluscs from a third country caught in Class B waters must be purified before selling to the EU. This has been the case since 2007. The UK was a party to this decision and was a strong advocate of the to introduction of third country status.
The EU did not decide to ban bivalve molluscs over night and in fact molluscs caught in UK from Class A waters can be sold directly to the EU.

The ironic thing is European boats still have access to our waters.
And have a market to sell in.
If Boris reduces their access. Then Europe can put tariffs on any fish we manage to sell there.
so the fishing industry has be royally fucked.

Nonsense. All that is required is for the shellfish to be processed (depurated) and the EU will accept imports. It's just a matter of a little investment and some more UK jobs which I'm sure the UK government will provide, oh, and some compensation for the fisherman too.

@@Iazzaboyce Then the problem of the end of the grace period comes into play, which will delay exports due to the excessive paperwork. The expense of installing purification tanks is unlikely to be worth the investment for such a small industry like mollusc fishing.
I don't know why people actually want to eat them, after reading about the dangers of untreated shellfish.
The three main categories of shellfish poisoning include paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP), amnesic shellfish poisoning (ASP) and diarrhetic shellfish poisoning (DSP). These conditions are caused by toxins that can accumulate in bivalves, causing neurological, gastrointestinal and respiratory symptoms that can even be fatal in extreme cases.
