A Hori Hori, I worked in an engineering factory with a dodgy power hacksaw, after a blade change it would periodically drop and break the new blade, I took to turning these broken bits of new HSS blades into work knives for the folk around the plant, not to anywhere this standard, but I now have a name for them. Thank you for an excellent year of inspiring content hoping you and your enjoyed winter soltice season along with all of the new fangled belief systems.
Well done Sir, excellent hand made tool, better than anything you can buy. We've lost our way in England making good tools, used to upset me how many old English spanners.used to end up in the scrap yard.
Beautiful! I made a Hori Hori from 420c for my work knives of the World Series of videos. My wife quickly claimed it for herself! Always enjoy your videos Max, thanks!
The trowel looks amazing and it’s extremely comforting to see the few initial fails with the wood. It makes it easier to cope when it happens to me too. Thank you for showing the complete journey.
What a fantastic process making a great item. The additional tools you've acquired are adding a nice finesse to your work. Looking forward to seeing what you make in future. 😉👍
I bought a Japanese made Hori Hori for my wife a few years ago, the best tool she has ever had, she absolutely would not be without it. Great video Max, Happy New Year!
That was great to watch (and learn from). I hope you have had a very Merry Christmas and that the hori hori was well received. Have a great New year when it comes. All the best 🏴🥃
No officer this is a Japanese gardening trowel and I just forgot it was in my handbag. Of course I wouldn't dream of using it to defend myself from a feral scumbag in the shopping mall! 🤣🤣 I love the way it has depth marks so you can tell if you have gone deep enough to reach a vital spot!
Proper job that, looks ace- I've not used one but I reckon like a lot of Japanese things it'll be excellent for the job, a multi-tool for the gardener.
Max merry Christmas mate and I’ve got to say that hori hori is pretty bloody beautiful mate the only problem is now max you don’t have my address to send it to 😂😂😂 great job and a very enjoyable watch 👍👍
A bit of a hint about the recipient of the hori hori ? I'm sure that it will be appreciated. Hope that you and Keitei had a very good Christmas and I repeat my best wishes for 2025.
Good job you got the blade length below the 8" limit. Otherwise those serrations might have put this the wrong side of the recent daft changes to the knife laws.
Fortunately it's exempt due to being handmade as well. Agreed they are daft laws. Details and exemptions listed in here: assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/66a26887fc8e12ac3edb04e4/2024.06.18_Public_guidance_for_the_Zombie-Style_Knives_and_Machetes_Surrender_and_Compensation_Scheme_FINAL.pdf
Assumptions are the mother of all fook ups it's a shame the first handle was scrap but you got it licked with that lovely bit of oak. You'll be checking that blade every time you go to first use that saw from now on won't you Max. 👍
Hi Max, thank you for the video. 👍 I have a question about the electrics in your workshop. (I know you did a video a good while back on your set up at home) but are any of your machines running on 3 phase? The linisher looks quite substantial for instance. Also, are you managing to store your power or reliant on the generator most of the times for shop days like this one? I hope you catch my drift and im sorry if the answers are obvious...
None of the workshop machinery is three phase, I do have a three phase car lift I'm currently installing and that will be powered by an inverter. This has been the worst winter for solar I can remember with many grey days so highly reliant on the Lister right now. That usually changes about mid January, then mostly solar.
No, the blade is under 8" and it's hand made which would exempt it anyway. Details are here: assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/66a26887fc8e12ac3edb04e4/2024.06.18_Public_guidance_for_the_Zombie-Style_Knives_and_Machetes_Surrender_and_Compensation_Scheme_FINAL.pdf

You know that serrations are banned under the new knife act and laws this would be considered a zombie knife..what a completely ridiculous society we live in. Police are looking at all old farm tools like bill hooks as well
It doesn't fit the definition on at least two counts as the blade is under 8" and it's hand made. I agree the laws are ridiculous though. Thanks for showing that sometimes projects can go sideways. Makes us mere mortals feel better .
Can't wait to use it ✨ 🗡️ 🧑🌾👍 😁 💚
@@KeiteiVentures looking forward to see it in action. Merry Christmas and a Happy new year to you and Max 🎄🍺
I would pay a lot of money for one of them.
Better to be a Warrior in a Garden, than a Gardener in a war. But with a Hori Hori you can be both 😉
That is beautiful! If you ever decide to add them as a product please let me know. I would love to buy my wife one
Nice one Max, a beautiful present.

The finished article looks outstanding, amazing Max, I enjoyed every minute of watching its construction, thank you.
Nice job as always. Merry Christmas Max and Katie!
That is a proper present.
Great to see that flypress doing some work. Merry Christmas Max!
Fantastic job Max looks brilliant.
Looks a bit vicious to dig up vegetables! Nice job Max, it looks lovely.

What a wonderful present. Made with skill and love😜👌🏻
Magnificent!
Well done Sir, excellent hand made tool, better than anything you can buy.
We've lost our way in England making good tools, used to upset me how many old English spanners.used to end up in the scrap yard.
Excellent work Sir Maximus. Looks top notch.
What a great tool that will be , beautiful handmade Max.. bravo
Your lighting and camera are much brighter and clearer than before. Props!
Beautiful
Great job, Max! The Lad bought one for his Mum. Cut her finger before it was fully out the sheath!
Looks awsome! Great video :) Merry Christmas 🎅and Happy New Year 🥳

Great job Max, that was inspiring!

Thank you, Max.

That's fantastic Max.
"That's not a knife" 🤣
Oh, you've played spoony spoony?
Fabulous artefact 👍🏻
Thanks for showing that. Great stuff. Ady☮️
I hope you had a great Xmas, and that you continue your success in 2025!
Proper job that, looks ace- I've not used one but I reckon like a lot of Japanese things it'll be excellent for the job, a multi-tool for the gardener.
Wonderful work max.
Great video very good display of your skills. 👍👍👍
Excellent job max, jist need to make a sheath now. Happy Christmas..
I did feel for you when the wood went wrong. Turned out lovely although probably best to only use it in a secluded garden, it looks lethal.
that turned out lovely .. Merry Christmas Max
Superb Max, good tool for metal detecting as well! Have a good Christmas!
phil
_SPECTACULAR!_
Another top job Max :)
Smashing that.
Marvellous job well done, Merry Christmas wishing all the best for your future.
Fantastic work as always Max,you have inspired me to get back in the shed and start making things again.Merry Christmas!
Is it me or does your shop look WAY cleaner (more organized) than before!?
Keep up the great videos.
👍🏻🍻
Merry Xmas and all the best for 2025 to you and Katie. Season's greetings from The Netherlands.
37:33 is that the blacksmith equivalent of making the sign of the cross? 🤔
Very nice article, I'm sure it was gratefully appreciated. 👍
Max merry Christmas mate and I’ve got to say that hori hori is pretty bloody beautiful mate the only problem is now max you don’t have my address to send it to 😂😂😂 great job and a very enjoyable watch 👍👍
Excellent work , thank you .
Ready to order one from you!
You should make another and use the cherry handle, widen the slot to take some brass shim and use brass pins. Will give the tool a really good look.
I LOVE that multi tool
I use my HoriHori when metal detecting in garden lawns , where digging holes is a no no.
A bit of a hint about the recipient of the hori hori ? I'm sure that it will be appreciated. Hope that you and Keitei had a very good Christmas and I repeat my best wishes for 2025.
That looks to be half Digdig and half Means of Defence!
It does look nice though!
I'm guessing the lucky recipient's name begins with a K and ends with tei?
Happy Christmas to you both.
What a lovely gift!
That close up shot when you were filing was very impressive with how sharp it was. Did you get a new camera?
We walk or we don't.
Are we walking for fresh bread!!
Cpuld always make serations on the flypress

This is a lovely job, but how do they fit in with UK knife laws ? are they legal
I'm not a lawyer but I'd suggest it's legal in the same way the axe I made is legal.
The government have recently updated the knife laws,so it may be worth looking into.
As long as he doesn’t carry out with him, there’s nothing saying you can’t have a large knife on your property
Have a look in your kitchen, you can't ban knifes but you cannot walk down the street with it unless you have a good reason it's that simple
Yeah looks remarkably like what would be classed as a "zombie" knife
Assumptions are the mother of all fook ups it's a shame the first handle was scrap but you got it licked with that lovely bit of oak. You'll be checking that blade every time you go to first use that saw from now on won't you Max. 👍

@maximusironthumper thanks👍
Maximus should have divided the video into seven parts, so that by the end he would have created the Seventh Summary! 😀
🕊️🎄🕊️
If it had a built-in air pump, it'd be a DigDug... :P
Hori Hori also means "gardeners got sick of being told that it's better to be a warrior in a garden".
90% of gardening tools are blades.
You was watching commando or predator for that knife idea
Make one 4 times bigger on a spade for digging roots
jeez,is that thing for zombie vegetables ?😄
Forgot the hanging up hole?
Yes, well spotted. I didn't even realise until editing.
Could it not be also classed as a zombie knife ?
No, the blade is under 8" and it's hand made which would exempt it anyway.

Didn't they just ban 'Zombie' knives?
