Yes, they made three prototypes, all of whihc were quite incredible machines! In fact you could say the final version was a production model. But my point is it is no longer operational, hence this is currently the biggest operational hexapod in the world. :)

Been reading to start building a hexapod, but you took it to the next level

That's a heck of a steampunkmobile, but it looks like it's just a scaled up model of technology that's been out for a decade or more. It needs some automated terrain detection and control assistance or something so the pilot can just say go forward and it will climb over whatever is in its way at more than a snails pace. Maybe some quick moving pneumatics rather than hydraulics so it really gets cooking.

I can see the Mantis performing in multimedia events, advertizing campaigns, commercials, or helping to build brands, it would be great if you're considering renting it out for such events!

To see how many developers would watch it to the end.. and bother to point it out! your the first! well done. ;)

I guess some of us just like to create things for the sake of creating, we don't necessarily need a reason.. Art? With this project we tried to cover two aspects, creative engineering and an R&D platform for many possible applications. Take a look at the first machine timber jack produced, it doesn't look to practical, but it became something amazing! The one you see in most of their videos is actually their third machine and cost tens of millions of dollars!

Isn't that how most inventions start off?
I believe the army and oil exploration companies are interested in this thing. With a few modifications, tweaks, and improvement, I can see this been used to help in different situations.

To all those complaining about its speed: its a gressorial platform, its not supposed to move fast. The whole concept, even military, behind a gressorial vehicle is traversing terrain which tracked or wheeled vehicles find difficult or impossible to traverse. They also have just as good, if not better, stability than tracked or wheeled vehicles, meaning stronger firepower is theoretically possible. They also have the benefit of theoretically being able to carry heavier loads.

    This is the first step.
If someone never tried to make something as this, we would never get closer to the goal people think about.
Keep up the great work good sir. My thoughts, and hopes are with you.

When I hit the lottery, I will commision you to build one out of carbon fiber, maybe a two seater, that can go faster. I could not find the specs on your web page. What angle can it climb?

I think a snail just beat you to the finish line..
While it seems pretty gratuitous here on earth, maybe it could be used in space exploration? Not sure about the hydraulics in extreme temperatures though.

Having a form of expertise in the area you are judging will make for a refined, useful opinion that is of actual benefit for those who are being judged. Or even a decent sense of criticism can be useful.
As opposed to some of the comments here such as "too bad it's fake".

  • @jhonbollockshire8765
    @jhonbollockshire8765 11 років тому

The comment you replied to was specifically addressing "hate" comments (comments with straight insults as opposed to actual criticism), which is why such comments are being addressed. Not I nor the other person you addressed ever said that you need to do better in order to judge. That was purely a misconstrued assumption.
And it is judgement, he expressed his opinion on the machine as a fact based on his evaluation.

Reminds me of that robot from the beginning of the first Half-Life game (I mean that as a compliment. Its a sci-fi game). I'm really chuffed such an awesome design has been made and I hope it finds some useful applications in the future!

Yeah it's a real shame! Once I found the site and discovers its history and impending doom, it just seemed like we had to film there. I got in touch with the owners and had an initial site visit where I showed them the Mantis and our plans, and the kindly agreed. :)
