I absolutely love bumblebees. Whenever I see one I can't keep my eyes off of it. They're so adorable and just gently fly around and land on flowers. Bees are awesome 💜

I find it absolutely hilarious how the honeybee makes a perfectly-symmetrical, evenly spaced hive of identical hexagons that tesselate perfectly with no wasted space, while the bumblebee has this horrendous-looking mess of a hive that looks so crudely cobbled together like some sort of art project crammed on the due date. There are busy bees, and there are busy bees who try their hardest but simply have no artistic talent whatsoever 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

By the end of the year they are all gone; only the queens last the full year and they hibernate before starting a new nest when it gets warmer. The timing varies according to species of bumble, but there are still definite limits. They don't construct their own nests - they exclusively take over the nesting spots abandoned by other animals (or created for them by us, of course), so you might get another nest starting in the same spot, but you have a big gap in the autumn/winter time. The main thing is remembering, queens looking for nesting sites, they look for snug gaps, if you can cover the door gaps so they aren't visible this could help - wouldn't need to be airtight or anything, just more hidden - and if there are nearby spots where you can create new potential nest spots this could especially help as they can go to those instead. Also remember that most species of bee prefer a nesting site close to the ground. Oh, and additionally, "bee hotels" that you can get are wonderful but they are for solitary bees, not big enough for bumble bees, so they won't help tempt away bumbles. I have not tried any of this as I have never had a garden of my own, I am just passing on information I have learned from videos, lectures and charity websites. I love learning about bees and helping to spread information about them. :) Bumblebee Conservation Trust is a great source of information. It's a charity to help bumblebees and this guy in the video runs it. Last I remember it has a section on advice for moving nests.

I love bumblebees. Flying fluffy fatties. Unfortunately I'm clearing a large mound of old grass clippings that go back some years now and it seems a lot of bumblebees have made a home within the mound. I have to clear it in a way not to harm any of them, they fly around a bit disoriented but hopefully they'll go build a new home somewhere else.

What a kind man you are doing that for our little "sky pandas" I adore them. I had them living under my outside stairs one summer, I just let them be. They never bothered with us or the dogs walking by them all day long.
This made my day! Thank you so much. Always wondered if bumblebees lived together or were solo creatures. When I was a child I use to spot individual ones fly inside flower heads, then would (very) gently stroke their furry backs with 1 finger. They didn't mind, and just got on with collecting pollen.

All my life I thought bumblebees were loners. I came across a nest while removing some old ceiling insulation and it absolutely freaked me out. Didn’t get bit but seeings that many bumbles at once swarming freaked me out.
I kid you not: that bumblebee nest looks cozy. Shame bumblebees are so short lived, such cool and cute bees seem to enjoy live in their communes way more than honeybees in their massive hives.

Hello Dave, I absolutely love honeybees, Bumblebees fall into that group too. I encourage nesting bees in my garden but did not realize that the bumblebees took me seriously and nested in my pool shed. where I go in very often. They use the gap in the door frame to come in and out, as well as under the shed from the outside. We need to do some repairs and I am not sure how to relocate them they seem to have nested in the floor board where they can access from the outside as well as from the inside. Any suggestions

They must have treated our cupped hands as they do inside jam jars. I’m not sure who showed me how to do it and why they would show a young child how to do it. I remember I did that as a kid. I was watching a documentary about a completely different bee and the narrator explained how the worker bees had no stinger. That's all my mind had heard. I ran outside and saw a big juicy bumblebee land on a dandelion, so I reached down and caught it in my hands. That was the story of how I recieved the worst sting I have ever received in my life lol.

I think I might try and make a simple wooden box with perspec on the top (under the lid) so I could try and entice bumblebees to nest in it. I could observe them now and then, by opening the lid, yet not upsetting them too much as the perspex would still be there. I watched a nest today. One enormous bee, three times as large as most of the bees going in and out, went in. I wondered if this was a cuckoo bee. Surely it can't be the queen leaving and returning?

I literally found a bumble bee nest underneath my porch I was literally taking a walk until I saw a bumblebee go underneath the stairs to the porch and I realize there was a hive
tragically it won't be. Bumblebee nests are annual (in fact this species, which is probably Bombus terrestris, are lots shorter in length than annual, with a colony time of little over a few months), and die at the end of each reproductive year, producing a load of new queens which go off to found new nests the following year. In Dave's part of the country (the South East of England), this species goes through 2-3 colony cycles per year (they over-winter too)
We have bumblebees in our backyard, I have no idea where they nest. I don’t know where they live so I have no idea how to not disturb them. The bumblebees are amazing at pollinating all of our raspberries and vegetables and they are so cute.
Dave Goulson, do you know if bumblebees have more complicated color preferences beyond liking yellow or purple flowers? Do drones prefer yellow flowers more than queens or workers -- in other words, are there more yellow flowers after the emergence of male bumblebees? Do flowers use more vivid shades of purple to attract this year's queen(ex. lupine) and next year's queens(ex. aster)? Does the vision of bumblebees deteriorate over the season, and if so, do the flowers adapt their pedals to match bumblebee vision?

I have a new nest (noticed noise) about two weeks ago and thought maybe chicks in roof eves as such faint and unusual intermittent sounds until my Neighour pointed out to me busy bees in and out of the eve which thankfully is on my side as he was wanting me to call in pest control. Nope, ain’t happening while they are in my space. I sit each evening and watch them after a stressful days work and it’s a pleasure to have them residing within maybe 2mtrs above my head but I ain’t moving my bed for nobody 😂 During the night I still hear mild activity and it’s kind of soothing to hear the night shift doing whatever they do during the dead of night. My 🐝 friends don’t realise another 500mm - 1m to their left and my neighbours would have killed these amazing little wonders. Maybe their is a God 🤔 Amen 🙏
I totally agree with you about hearing them being soothing. I have Tree Bumblebees nesting in my loft, directly above my bedroom ceiling. Their entry/exit hole is a space in the soffit right outside my bedroom window. I love hearing them at night making little squeaky buzz noises, and when they start going out foraging from about 5am. A privilege for me having them, and will miss when nest dies out.
Haulwen 05 I have these too above my bedroom in the loft space. Do you hear any noises other than a buzz? Mine make like almost a chirping sound (it’s not a bird), like a higher pitched intermittent buzz! So strange. They are definitely Bumbles too rather than a Honey Bee.
@@adampereira666 Hi Adam, yes I know exactly what you mean about the strange chirp like sound. At first when I was hearing the bees at night I thought the sound was coming from outside. We have lots of foxes around and I thought it was the screeching, baby like noises they make. Then I realised it was the bees. Sometimes I hear it a few times in a row, other times very intermittent. Hard to describe the sound but they're definitely up to something in the early hours!

When I was a little girl in the 1970's bumblebees would sit on my hand, and I was never stung by one.
They never do sting unless they or their nest is under threat or if they feel under threat.
I'm thrilled that the bees have decided to make a nest in my birdbox this year. The box has been there for 10 years and never been used before.
Great video, as a pest controller I get to see lots of these and always try to relocate if they're in a precarious position.

I realized that I understand most things about bees, and I have a rudimentary knowledge of wasps, but absolutely nothing on bumblebees. So I came here

I think I might try and make a simple wooden box with perspec on the top (under the lid) so I could try and entice bumblebees to nest in it. I could observe them now and then, by opening the lid, yet not upsetting them too much as the perspex would still be there.
I watched a nest today. One enormous bee, three times as large as most of the bees going in and out, went in. I wondered if this was a cuckoo bee. Surely it can't be the queen leaving and returning?

Hi there Dave! We found this video very nice and interesting.We have found a nest in the shed while trying to clean it out which has stopped us in our tracks now as we are petrified of them.We don't really know what to do now.

I literally found a bumble bee nest underneath my porch I was literally taking a walk until I saw a bumblebee go underneath the stairs to the porch and I realize there was a hive

tragically it won't be. Bumblebee nests are annual (in fact this species, which is probably Bombus terrestris, are lots shorter in length than annual, with a colony time of little over a few months), and die at the end of each reproductive year, producing a load of new queens which go off to found new nests the following year.
In Dave's part of the country (the South East of England), this species goes through 2-3 colony cycles per year (they over-winter too)
Bombus are da bomb.
We have bumblebees in our backyard, I have no idea where they nest. I don’t know where they live so I have no idea how to not disturb them. The bumblebees are amazing at pollinating all of our raspberries and vegetables and they are so cute.

Dave Goulson, do you know if bumblebees have more complicated color preferences beyond liking yellow or purple flowers? Do drones prefer yellow flowers more than queens or workers -- in other words, are there more yellow flowers after the emergence of male bumblebees? Do flowers use more vivid shades of purple to attract this year's queen(ex. lupine) and next year's queens(ex. aster)? Does the vision of bumblebees deteriorate over the season, and if so, do the flowers adapt their pedals to match bumblebee vision?

I see maybe 10 big boys hanging around my facia board... but after seeing the inside of the nest now I can understand why my ceiling sounds like its vibrating...
Really am quite scared if flying things and I'm trying to understand if this nest will grown beyond what I see in this video, what would the traffic around the entrance be like in full swing? .

I have a new nest (noticed noise) about two weeks ago and thought maybe chicks in roof eves as such faint and unusual intermittent sounds until my Neighour pointed out to me busy bees in and out of the eve which thankfully is on my side as he was wanting me to call in pest control.
Nope, ain’t happening while they are in my space.
I sit each evening and watch them after a stressful days work and it’s a pleasure to have them residing within maybe 2mtrs above my head but I ain’t moving my bed for nobody 😂
During the night I still hear mild activity and it’s kind of soothing to hear the night shift doing whatever they do during the dead of night.
My 🐝 friends don’t realise another 500mm - 1m to their left and my neighbours would have killed these amazing little wonders.
Maybe their is a God 🤔

I totally agree with you about hearing them being soothing. I have Tree Bumblebees nesting in my loft, directly above my bedroom ceiling. Their entry/exit hole is a space in the soffit right outside my bedroom window. I love hearing them at night making little squeaky buzz noises, and when they start going out foraging from about 5am. A privilege for me having them, and will miss when nest dies out.
Haulwen 05 I have these too above my bedroom in the loft space. Do you hear any noises other than a buzz? Mine make like almost a chirping sound (it’s not a bird), like a higher pitched intermittent buzz! So strange. They are definitely Bumbles too rather than a Honey Bee.
@@adampereira666 Hi Adam, yes I know exactly what you mean about the strange chirp like sound. At first when I was hearing the bees at night I thought the sound was coming from outside. We have lots of foxes around and I thought it was the screeching, baby like noises they make. Then I realised it was the bees. Sometimes I hear it a few times in a row, other times very intermittent. Hard to describe the sound but they're definitely up to something in the early hours!
