I especially like the idea that you brought up about FPs in college. I’m over the hill and definitely not in college, but I like the idea of reviews that highlight every day use like note taking or homework (I think I’ve seen posts where you are doing math with a FP 👏). I’ve always said that I get FPs for the experience of writing with them. Though I have to like how it looks, that’s ultimately useless if I’m not going to use it IMO.
I have the same Aurora Viola model and this was part of the dilemma I had with liking this pen. I have an EF nib which makes it great for notes and the small writing needed in my planner. And, like you, I do like the unique experience the feedback gives to my writing.
But I struggled with the idea of using such an expensive pen for these mundane tasks where I felt the pen excelled. It took me a long time to warm up to this pen and I even felt guilty for not loving it as much as I “should”.
Hope I made at least a little sense. Sorry for the long comment. And I look forward to what you will do next. 🧡
I love your thoughts, thank you very much! I definitely understand where you're coming from, it feels like sometimes these pens were meant to be used by bigwigs to sign huge contracts LOL but there's a lot of charm in using them for every day writing!! I'm glad you enjoyed my take on that :D I hope you continue to enjoy your optima!

Nice review - guessing you've done a few more two years on. Lovely pen. Auroras do have lovely nibs as you say. I only have 88s but might look at acquiring one of these beauties. Good job - for a first review you come across as very competent indeed!

Nice review Aidan, thanks...I just bought one of these in a Goccia nib that should arrive today or tomorrow! I also do math with fountain pens, and have used them since college (I'm waaaay old now!)
Nice addition Aurora made to the Optima range. I own the green version, with a medium nib. Beautiful emerald green, and a fantastic nib, it's one of the pens I use more often, and perhaps my favorite. I am sure you will enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine.

Well done on your first review. Pretty impressive that someone in college can afford one of these beauties; clearly you’re better with your money than I was at your age and stage! I too love the optima style ( in preference to the 88s) and have the Nebulosa (and a couple of others). So gorgeous. Just a few comments and suggestions: I find that posted the Aurora is more than comfortable for big hands - so not small at all for me. For size comparisons, using more common pens like a Safari for example, helps to familiarise more viewers with the size. And finally, I’m not sure if I missed your saying what size the nib was ... was it a F or M? Thankyou. Keep it up!
Thanks so much for the feedback! Hopefully I will get one of the new LE safaris soon to include it in the size comparisons, I agree it would be better to have pens like that! And I forgot to mention about how aurora denotes their nib sizes, it's marked on the feed - this one is a fine nib!
I agree with you that Aurora nibs have a fair amount of feedback (my experience being with the Aurora 88, basically the same nib as the Optima.) For some time I've been wondering about the nature of the feedback and how it originates. I'd be curious for your opinion...
There are at least two possible sources of feeback:
1. the way the nib is ground & smoothed; and
2. the nature of the tipping material, perhaps some alloys being "grainier" than others (if that's even possible.)
If it's mainly the grind and smoothing of the nib that gives Auroras their distinct feel, I'd think that over time, Aurora nibs will become smoother and tend towards the feel of nibs from other manufacturers. (It might take quite sometime for this to happen but paper itself has slight abravise qualities and would tend to polish the nib with normal use. I've used some pens so much that the nibs have worn down over time.)
