  • Join me next week in NYC for free, hands-on tips and advice for how to do the technique of foreign language shadowing. I'll be there on three mornings, the 18th, 19th, and 20th (Thursday Friday, and Saturday - I mispoke in the video). Early each morning, I'll go to a park anyway to exercise, so this is an invitation to join me for a combined mental and physical exercise session of foreign language shadowing while doing a kind of power walk. If you don't know how to shadow, I can demonstrate it for you and get you doing it right, and if you do shadow already, I can check your form and perhaps suggest other ways of doing it as well. If you might be interested in this, I will have a sign up sheet on my website soon where you can get more information about exactly when and where these three sessions will be: alexanderarguelles.com

Shadowing is also useful when programming. Find a source of code for a programing language you wish to learn and just type the entire document. This gets the hands use to typing correct code. And of course, that code should run because it is already good code.

For me, shadowing works more effectively if combined with reading, i.e. following simultaneously an audiobook and a printed copy while shadowing. Is that something you would also recommend, based on your experience?

Absolutely! There are a number of ways to employ shadowing audiobooks in foreign languages to help develop your reading abilities in those languages. I made some videos about some of those ways about 10 years back that should still be here on my channel. I've since discovered a few other was as well.

Personally, I vastly prefer Shadowing with a text in front of me, which precludes walking or any form of exercise. I understand that at a higher level of familiarity with a given text the actual written version becomes irrelevant and you can just use the audio, but unfortunately I lack the patience to work on the same text that long, so I tend to move on to a new one once I am familiar enough with the previous text. I have been able to get good results from that, but sadly I have not been doing that nearly enough so I have not seen that great a breakthrough in the last 2 years.
Really wish I could join in on the Practicum hikes, but alas! Wish you a great time out there!

Hello Yan. I hear what you are saying, but when you get good enough at advanced shadowing, you no longer need a text at all.

@@ProfASAr So do you notice that you do not even need a text when starting a new language?

@@Yan_Alkovic Yes, I am now generally able to blind shadow languages I haven't yet studied if I care to do so in order to get a feel for what they are like. However, I mainly do this with auidobooks in languages that I do know well, such that shadowing the narrator adds a new dimension to "reading" the text.

@@ProfASAr That's impressive! Maybe someday I'll get to that level myself, God willing.

I'm one of those people who has heard of shadowing (from your videos years ago) but never have really given it a fair, committed try. Have you or had anyone else ever done studies to measure the effectiveness of a regimen that includes shadowing vs one that doesn't?

I'd also be curious to learn how universally helpful the physical activity component is vs specific to individuals!

My impression is most people just never try adding the physical component, not that that they try it and decide it is not for them.
