This is much worse than Chernobyl because most of Chernobyl is much safer than this. ( You'd have to be at reactor to really have about same dosage ) .

X-rays will make a geiger counter scream for decay counts, but the decays themselve are not carrying as much energy a gamma rays. X-rays are dangerous non the less. Plus at the order of magnitude rates you guy measured, a Geiger-Muller Tube is grossely inacurate. You need an ionizing-chamber survey meter in order to make any sort of realistic measurment of the real amount of radiation you've been exposed. Be mindefull, your testes, your thyroid and your bone marrow and your gastro-intestinal mucosa are some of the most sensitive organs to ionizing radiation exposure. So you exposed yourselve to high radiation (especially since the levels rise exponentially proportionnal to the inverse of the distance you stand from the radiation source) you might fell tired, you might be more suceptible to infections (if your bone marrow become anaplastic) and you might experience diarrhea and vomitting from bowel mucosa irradiation. If you guys play with radiations, you guys need to find a way to direct the radiation in only one direction (collimation) by sheilding all arround the source except in the direction of collimation, by using lead ingots. Also, you need to wear a cumulative dose meter on your body to know the kinds of cumulated radiation doses you guys cumulated. Geiger counters is not good enough.
I have the same tube they used in my collection. When I energized it, I found that it emits strong radiation in all directions, like a point light source, even through the thick copper anode...
X-rays and gamma rays are the same particle and indistinguishable, the only difference is their method of production (nuclear vs. non nuclear decay processes). Historically the methods of production were such that gamma rays from nuclear decay were higher energy, but nowadays x-rays can be much, much higher energies, thanks to high energy linear accelerators. (also thanks for clarifying that an ionization chamber is required. The GM counter is woefully inadequate for purpose)
I get that. But what I like about Kreosan is that they don't pose as jackasses, hurting themselves to entertain us (like the mtv Jackass became). Kreosan are driven by curiosity ... and by now of course also the fame. But they are less after new thrills to create content, as they are on real adventures, and we are along for the ride.
They should have measured the radiation behind the device where that guy was standing. From a 1m distance they showed it was producing around 300 R/h, that's 0.083 R/s. We know that the absorbance of X-rays is low, and so they probably absorbed 0.83mGy/s which is equivalent to 0.83mSv/s. This is bad, but it's not as horrific as people are making it out to be. You start to see real damage at around 1Sv. You'd have to spend around 20 minutes continuously in the beam to get that kind of dosage at 1m distance. The guy that stuck his foot in there was much close than 1m. So he could have easily gotten a significant dose from just a few seconds. And the guy switching the unit on, if he was standing at that distance for 20 minutes or more cumulatively might have gotten a full body dose over 1Sv. It really all depends on how cognizant they were of these risks before they started. They definitely increased their risk of getting cancer. Radiation poisoning... well... You are wrong. This is electromagnetic radiation. Not radioactive particles that emit radiation. The difference being once electromagnetic radiation is gone, it really is gone. seldom does this cause any damage that appears down the line.
@@CTimmerman Neutron bombs emit large amount of neutrons that then either decay by themselves and emit electromagnet radiation or fuse/fizz other atoms and make them radiocative etc. So they don't beg to differ.

As a nuclear engineer, who works in the States in the middle of nowhere working with low yield nuclear weapons. This is quite possibly the most dangerous thing I have ever seen in my entire life, how this guy has survived this long is one of the greatest mysteries of the world. I don’t understand how he’s worried about being electrocuted, as he’s working unprotected with *VERY* dangerous amounts of radiation. I don’t go anywhere near anything I work with unless I absolutely have to, and when I do I am wearing full body protection, completely sealed, I have to use an oxygen tank. I wish them the best, but unfortunately that’s not where they’re going...

What they are doing it is indeed dangerous but as long as they don't put their hands on the main beam at distances closer than 20cm for some seconds and they operate the device less than a few minutes total time there should be no serious worry. Their exposure is enough to go above the permitted annual dose for the average population but not enough for them to have any effects, probably they received at most a couple of mSv of whole body dose, enough to increase their probability of cancer less than one hundredth of a percent, that is insignificant. Being fat, smoking, or getting too much sun is more dangerous.

The Chernobyl trip basically wasn't dangerous at all. The levels of radiation and amount of radioactive dust you might inhale are far too low to have any measurable long-term health effects unless you spend many weeks into months straight around the hot zones.

The distance at which you put your hand infront of the Xray Screen is around the same distance you measured the 700R/h. you hold your hand there for 2min and you are already at the DHS emergency guideline. You hold your hand there for a combined 10min and you in the range, where people start vomiting afterwards. Watch the hair on your hands and when it start to fall off maybe then you realize, what you have done. You need to stop immediately and go back to electricity, that you understand.

This is really dangerous. A small X-ray tube like the one in the video easily produces radiation levels of several sieverts per hour ! Please note also that regular geiger counters may give false readings when dealing with X-rays. The G-M tubes in regular geiger counters are especially made for the detection of gamma rays not X-rays. While both are technically the same (high energy photons), gamma photons tend to have higher energies than (most) X-ray photons. Low energy X-ray photons may even not be detected by standard G-M tubes but can be very dangerous as they are absorbed more by bodily tissues than the high energy photons which tend to just pass through.

Am I understanding correctly... 40 R/hr at 1 METER DISTANCE? By the inverse-square law, we can assume that the dose at 10 cm would be 4,000 R/hr. Jesus Christ guys, this is no joke, you are putting yourselves in serious danger. All the Chernobyl stuff is absolutely peanuts compared to this, most people hardly get any significant dose in the zone, but this machine is putting out an absolutely massive amount of ionizing radiation. While watching, I was wondering if any of you guys might get symptoms or radiation sickness, and right there at the end, that guy's foot was showing the classic signs.
The guy turning the machine on and off is probably going to die now, just because the tube is pointed away from him doesn't mean the rays wont reflect off of all of the metal objects in the room. I'll be shocked if something major doesn't happen soon because of this
Im not sure which part worries me more, them trying to tie into a "high voltage line" (powerline?) or the possibility of them succeeding and producing maybe 10,000 r/hr at 3 meters. Based on their problems managing radiation and arcing in this video, they'll probably die either way. Best case scenario, the wiring flashes over and engulfs the whole thing in plasma within half an AC cycle, cracks the glass and burns it to a crisp, while they stand far enough back to not be burned or shocked.

Snow on the camera indicates intense ionizing radiation. If this is exceeding 100 rem in an hour, acute radiation sickness would set in at an hour or more. 5 hours would be deadly. Luckily you are limiting exposure to very brief moments. The itching foot can be a sign of an X ray "burn". Quite interesting otherwise. Just be super careful. We don't want to lose you guys.
Rough inverse square law calculations say at 1 foot distance the dose rate is 5120 R/hr, 51.2 Sv/hr. Your foot was in the beam for around 10 seconds. You foot was thus exposed to 14.2 R. That single hit resulted in an increased lifetime risk of cancer.

@@eliasnikolaivonheimtrondse4424 1: you need like 100r (depending on the exact biological effectiveness of the radiation source) to get symptoms of Acute Radiation Syndrome. I think 500 is where you have a fair chance of dying in the short term. 2: why do we have to assume it's 100r/hr when it was 9r/hr at 3m and the meter was off scale at 40cm? Inverse square law (ignoring atmospheric attenuation for the moment since it will be minor at 3m) would predict 9(300/40)^2=500r/hr at 40cm. Or 140mr/sec. Their hands were even closer during some of those tests, but you're right it was just a couple seconds. They had a total of maybe a few minutes standing next to it (not really in the beam, but still being exposed) 3: Even getting a normal x ray or breathing natural radon gas gives you a little boost in cancer risk. It's just a matter of how small that risk is at low doses. I believe the allowed dose for nuclear workers is like 5r in one year, and no more than 10r over any 5 year period. I'm not saying I expect these guys to get radiation sickness and die, just that they've exposed themselves to an unusually high amount of radiation and I'm glad they stopped. If you give yourself a few r every week, it will catch up to you. A bunch of early x ray and nuclear researchers ended up with health problems (not just cancer) from repeated experiments. I'd argue they aren't fully aware of the risks, they're being more than cautious enough to avoid radiation poisoning on this specific day but if they understood the long term consequences they'd be much more cautious or not do it at all. Also, they claimed to be working on a much bigger device, with much higher radiation levels,. They also said they would "connect it to a high voltage line, about 110 kilowatts." I don't know where they'd get a 110kw power supply, but I know they could find a 110kilo*volt* high voltage line capable of delivering megawatts just by throwing a fishing line over a large overhead powerline and then pulling a heavy wire over it. I wouldn't discount this possibility but I can't see them doing that safely either. I also know they drew about 100kw from their homes service briefly, to heat a massive length of steel wire. If they indeed have a 110kva high voltage transformer, that is how I suspect they'd power it. The main risk here (x-rays aside) is that you could burn the insulation off the supply wires or transformer windings, causing a short circuit and a fire. Yes, I wrote a comment asking them not to do any more of this. I still stand by that. But I'm not sure why I "clearly don't know how radiation work."

If they stayed in the ray for an hour they would be dead for sure, the tube is not isolated and that makes it even worse because it iradiates the whole area, including their organs

yes truly, I watched my grandfather die in slow agonizing way due to bone cancer. Seeing the death of my grandpa due to that disease,having cancer is no joke, yet alone due to the radiation from the X-Ray Tube itself. It was slow agonizing way to die.
They’re likely overdriving the tube. Heck, it was enough radiation to saturate a Geiger counter at a few meters distance. that’s radiation burn territory. Even penetrating thin lead. And leukaemia is a horrible disease. Radiation damage is also cumulative, so when they really are professional they should be much more careful with it than normal people.

Hi guys, I have really liked your videos over the years and your dedication to the channel. I know there are a lot of people commenting saying how dangerous this is, some with no scientific background and some that are professionals that have spent years to study this area. I have showed this video to a family member that has a doctorate of science with a PHD in physics and is an electronics engineer. This personal has Worked on research into developing equipment that uses X-rays. Although this video was entertaining, you are putting your selves at EXTREME DANGER of some very nasty side effects of radiation. I know that no one can probably convince you to not do these experiments. However if you do so again next time. Please do so in an empty field, many kilometres away from any living creature. You should set the cameras so you can view them live from a few KM away and turn the device off and on from a very remote location. Your beam is not formed and also scatters in many directions. I am not trying to be negative in any way and am a big fan of you guys. However many people are concerned for the safety of you and others. So please don't do this again or if you do, please consult many professionals and do so in a safe, controlled environment.

And also X rays are relatively not that dangerous compared to other sources like beta or gamma rays. They wouldn’t get any radiation sickness even if they tried
Sorry but some of those suggestions are an exaggeration, Kms of distance are not needed and are very impractical and actually could make it more dangerous because people is everywhere and someone could wander too close not knowing what that device is and because everyone is so far away no body to warn them other than using signs. Industrial radiography uses very powerful gamma and x-ray sources and the controlled area around the source is usually around 30m so they could do something similar. I think the best thing they can do is to make remote controlled the switch to turn on the X-rays and place their device under ground level, be it they dig a hole, inside a large storm drain, use a small creek or a large gutter. That way the controlled area is much smaller and easier to manage and at the same time radiation is shielded by the ground.
If your hand and foot are getting post-exposure tingling sensation, they already absorbed close to a full sievert and have long crossed the threshold for cancer risk increase. People operating X-ray machines early in their creation would test them by doing precisely what you did with their hands in front of the fluorescent screen as routine. After a while of doing this their fingers began to necrose. You're past cancer risk and now headed towards full-blown ARS. The readings on your devices are consistent with such dosage.
@@signalworks I'm not referring to the tingles in the beginning and middle of the video, I'm referring to the tingles mentioned at the end, long after they were done using the device. Tingles from radiation damage take a while to set in.

Did some quick calculations. Assuming they showed half the experiments and each one was 10s long they still did not even reach the dose known to cause increased cancer risk, much less a lethal dose. Note that the values measured are intensity of R/h, not dose in R. They do not absorb a 100R dose for each run, that would take an hour in front of the tube. Don't get me wrong. What is shown in this video is completely reckless and insane but if they stay off the Xrays for a year after this they will not accumulate a dangerous total dose.
For comparision, the Chernobyl nuclear power plant reactor 4 hall floor is 1-2 R/h, and at the edge of the reactor core it's 40-50 R/h. The elephant's foot is 2 R/h. Kreosan's room in this video was 41 R/h.
The Swedish Radiation Safety Authority tweeted on 23 June 2020: "Very low levels of the radioactive substances cesium-134, cesium-137, cobalt-60 and ruthenium-103 were measured." So probably another nuclear test or accident in Russia.
I built a pulsed (marginally safer) version of this, and even at low power with shielding had adverse effects on test equipment. The images were barely visible to the naked eye from scintillator directly over the tube about every 5 pulses.
You should try making a lead shield behind and around the sides of the tube to focus the beam. Use a wooden stick to flip the switch to protect from shock
I love it and honestly, messing around with radiation can be fun when you know what you're doing and protect yourself and others well That being said, that xray gun is insanely dangerous. There's no fun without risk, but man.. I just hope you're protecting yourselves properly

If you are itching after being exposed to intense x radiation you have cutaneous radiation injury CRI. Look it up for info. I’ve dealt with patients having this issue from other sources of over exposure to X radiation.

Your data: 0.3 m : (INVALID measure - Geiger-Muller tube saturated, grossely underestimating). 1.0 m : 41.1 R/h (or 0.383449 Sv/h) 3.0 m : 9.04 R/h ( or 0.084340 Sv/h) (data seems off the chart, should be lower at around 4.0 R/h to fit the slope) 7.0 m : 0.8 R/h (or 0.007464 Sv/h) 10.0 m : 0.3 R/h (or 0.002799 Sv/h) 36 m : 0.0066 R/h (or 0.000616 Sv/h) 200 m : 0.000406 R/h (or 0.000004 Sv/h) I get a slope y= 41.144x-0.0441, where y = rate in R/h and x = 1/distance^2 So at 50 cm (0.5 m), the rate (which GM-counter cannot measure) is 164 R/h (1.53 Sv/h) So at 30 cm (0.3 m), the rate is 457 R/h (or 4.26 Sv/h) So at 10 cm (0.1 m), that rate climbs to 4114 R/h (or 38.4 Sv/h). So at 1 cm (0.01m), that rate climbs to 411444 R/h (or 3839 Sv/h !) So if you stay in front of the source for 5 seconds, that's 0.08333 minutes or 0.001388 hours. If you stay 5 seconds at 1 cm, you accumulate 5.3 Seivert cumulated (50% will die after a few weeks for overall body irradiation at 1 cm). X-rays will make a geiger counter scream for decay counts, but the decays themselve are not carrying as much energy a gamma rays. X-rays are dangerous non the less. Plus at the order of magnitude rates you guy measured, a Geiger-Muller Tube is grossely inacurate. You need an ionizing-chamber survey meter in order to make any sort of realistic measurment of the real amount of radiation you've been exposed. Be mindefull, your testes, your thyroid and your bone marrow and your gastro-intestinal mucosa are some of the most sensitive organs to ionizing radiation exposure. So you exposed yourselve to high radiation (especially since the levels rise exponentially proportionnal to the inverse of the distance you stand from the radiation source) you might fell tired, you might be more suceptible to infections (if your bone marrow become anaplastic) and you might experience diarrhea and vomitting from bowel mucosa irradiation. If you guys play with radiations, you guys need to find a way to direct the radiation in only one direction (collimation) by sheilding all arround the source except in the direction of collimation, by using lead ingots. Also, you need to wear a cumulative dose meter on your body to know the kinds of cumulated radiation doses you guys cumulated. Geiger counters is not good enough.
A gamma scout GM counter has a top of the scale measurment of 5 mSv/h (5000 uSv/h). That converts to 0.54 Roentgen/h.

X-rays and gamma rays are the same particle and indistinguishable, the only difference is their method of production (nuclear vs. non nuclear decay processes). Historically the methods of production were such that gamma rays from nuclear decay were higher energy, but nowadays x-rays can be much, much higher energies, thanks to high energy linear accelerators.
(also thanks for clarifying that an ionization chamber is required. The GM counter is woefully inadequate for purpose)

They should have measured the radiation behind the device where that guy was standing. From a 1m distance they showed it was producing around 300 R/h, that's 0.083 R/s. We know that the absorbance of X-rays is low, and so they probably absorbed 0.83mGy/s which is equivalent to 0.83mSv/s. This is bad, but it's not as horrific as people are making it out to be. You start to see real damage at around 1Sv. You'd have to spend around 20 minutes continuously in the beam to get that kind of dosage at 1m distance. The guy that stuck his foot in there was much close than 1m. So he could have easily gotten a significant dose from just a few seconds. And the guy switching the unit on, if he was standing at that distance for 20 minutes or more cumulatively might have gotten a full body dose over 1Sv. It really all depends on how cognizant they were of these risks before they started. They definitely increased their risk of getting cancer. Radiation poisoning... well... I guess we'll find out in a few days I guess. Next video: KREOSAN visits the hospital.

As a nuclear engineer, who works in the States in the middle of nowhere working with low yield nuclear weapons. This is quite possibly the most dangerous thing I have ever seen in my entire life, how this guy has survived this long is one of the greatest mysteries of the world. I don’t understand how he’s worried about being electrocuted, as he’s working unprotected with *VERY* dangerous amounts of radiation. I don’t go anywhere near anything I work with unless I absolutely have to, and when I do I am wearing full body protection, completely sealed, I have to use an oxygen tank. The Chernobyl trip basically wasn't dangerous at all. The levels of radiation and amount of radioactive dust you might inhale are far too low to have any measurable long-term health effects unless you spend many weeks into months straight around the hot zones.

The distance at which you put your hand infront of the Xray Screen is around the same distance you measured the 700R/h. you hold your hand there for 2min and you are already at the DHS emergency guideline. Getting 1 Sv over a year is incomparable to getting 1 Sv over a day or an hour; in the second scenario, the quantity of cellular and molecular damage done is significantly higher, and directly interferes with the body's capability to self-repair these damages. At 1 meter they measured 410 mSv/h which is already massive and enough to cause immediate danger.

Did they ever think to check how much radiation is leaking to the side of the beam? And don't get me started about connecting to a "110 kilowatt high voltage line." This is really dangerous. A small X-ray tube like the one in the video easily produces radiation levels of several sieverts per hour ! Please note also that regular geiger counters may give false readings when dealing with X-rays. The G-M tubes in regular geiger counters are especially made for the detection of gamma rays not X-rays. While both are technically the same (high energy photons), gamma photons tend to have higher energies than (most) X-ray photons. Low energy X-ray photons may even not be detected by standard G-M tubes but can be very dangerous as they are absorbed more by bodily tissues than the high energy photons which tend to just pass through.
Based on inverse square law calculations I calculated 51.2-204.8 Sv/hr. Death in minutes, cancer risk increased in seconds.

You're just getting lower counts per minute (CPM) because of lower energy per photon, not because they're undetectable. So your statement about low-energy X-rays being "very dangerous" because they absorb more into tissues... well, yeah, that's why we use lead shielding for any type of X-ray exposure, but your handheld tube? That's hardly producing the kind of output that’s going to nuke someone in seconds like you're claiming.
And let’s not ignore the fact that for anything handheld, especially if it’s something repurposed or cobbled together, the amount of voltage and power it’d need to produce a dose rate of several sieverts per hour would fry the device itself-or the person using it-long before it starts threatening bystanders. If it were truly producing several sieverts per hour, you'd be dead pretty quickly just from holding the thing.

Am I understanding correctly... 40 R/hr at 1 METER DISTANCE? By the inverse-square law, we can assume that the dose at 10 cm would be 4,000 R/hr. Jesus Christ guys, this is no joke, you are putting yourselves in serious danger. All the Chernobyl stuff is absolutely peanuts compared to this, most people hardly get any significant dose in the zone, but this machine is putting out an absolutely massive amount of ionizing radiation. While watching, I was wondering if any of you guys might get symptoms or radiation sickness, and right there at the end, that guy's foot was showing the classic signs.

Im not sure which part worries me more, them trying to tie into a "high voltage line" (powerline?) or the possibility of them succeeding and producing maybe 10,000 r/hr at 3 meters. Based on their problems managing radiation and arcing in this video, they'll probably die either way. Best case scenario, the wiring flashes over and engulfs the whole thing in plasma within half an AC cycle, cracks the glass and burns it to a crisp, while they stand far enough back to not be burned or shocked.

Snow on the camera indicates intense ionizing radiation. If this is exceeding 100 rem in an hour, acute radiation sickness would set in at an hour or more. 5 hours would be deadly. Luckily you are limiting exposure to very brief moments. The itching foot can be a sign of an X ray "burn". Quite interesting otherwise. Just be super careful. We don't want to lose you guys.

Rough inverse square law calculations say at 1 foot distance the dose rate is 5120 R/hr, 51.2 Sv/hr. Your foot was in the beam for around 10 seconds. You foot was thus exposed to 14.2 R. That single hit resulted in an increased lifetime risk of cancer.

@@eliasnikolaivonheimtrondse4424 1: you need like 100r (depending on the exact biological effectiveness of the radiation source) to get symptoms of Acute Radiation Syndrome. I think 500 is where you have a fair chance of dying in the short term.
2: why do we have to assume it's 100r/hr when it was 9r/hr at 3m and the meter was off scale at 40cm? Inverse square law (ignoring atmospheric attenuation for the moment since it will be minor at 3m) would predict 9(300/40)^2=500r/hr at 40cm. Or 140mr/sec. Their hands were even closer during some of those tests, but you're right it was just a couple seconds. They had a total of maybe a few minutes standing next to it (not really in the beam, but still being exposed)
3: Even getting a normal x ray or breathing natural radon gas gives you a little boost in cancer risk. It's just a matter of how small that risk is at low doses. I believe the allowed dose for nuclear workers is like 5r in one year, and no more than 10r over any 5 year period.
I'm not saying I expect these guys to get radiation sickness and die, just that they've exposed themselves to an unusually high amount of radiation and I'm glad they stopped. If you give yourself a few r every week, it will catch up to you. A bunch of early x ray and nuclear researchers ended up with health problems (not just cancer) from repeated experiments. I'd argue they aren't fully aware of the risks, they're being more than cautious enough to avoid radiation poisoning on this specific day but if they understood the long term consequences they'd be much more cautious or not do it at all.
Also, they claimed to be working on a much bigger device, with much higher radiation levels,. They also said they would "connect it to a high voltage line, about 110 kilowatts." I don't know where they'd get a 110kw power supply, but I know they could find a 110kilo*volt* high voltage line capable of delivering megawatts just by throwing a fishing line over a large overhead powerline and then pulling a heavy wire over it. I wouldn't discount this possibility but I can't see them doing that safely either. I also know they drew about 100kw from their homes service briefly, to heat a massive length of steel wire. If they indeed have a 110kva high voltage transformer, that is how I suspect they'd power it. The main risk here (x-rays aside) is that you could burn the insulation off the supply wires or transformer windings, causing a short circuit and a fire.

If they stayed in the ray for an hour they would be dead for sure, the tube is not isolated and that makes it even worse because it iradiates the whole area, including their organs

yes truly, I watched my grandfather die in slow agonizing way due to bone cancer. Seeing the death of my grandpa due to that disease,having cancer is no joke, yet alone due to the radiation from the X-Ray Tube itself. It was slow agonizing way to die.
They’re likely overdriving the tube. Heck, it was enough radiation to saturate a Geiger counter at a few meters distance. that’s radiation burn territory. Even penetrating thin lead.

Hi guys, I have really liked your videos over the years and your dedication to the channel. I know there are a lot of people commenting saying how dangerous this is, some with no scientific background and some that are professionals that have spent years to study this area.
I have showed this video to a family member that has a doctorate of science with a PHD in physics and is an electronics engineer. This personal has Worked on research into developing equipment that uses X-rays.
Although this video was entertaining, you are putting your selves at EXTREME DANGER of some very nasty side effects of radiation. I know that no one can probably convince you to not do these experiments.
However if you do so again next time. Please do so in an empty field, many kilometres away from any living creature. You should set the cameras so you can view them live from a few KM away and turn the device off and on from a very remote location.

I am not trying to be negative in any way and am a big fan of you guys. However many people are concerned for the safety of you and others. So please don't do this again or if you do, please consult many professionals and do so in a safe, controlled environment.

Sorry but some of those suggestions are an exaggeration, Kms of distance are not needed and are very impractical and actually could make it more dangerous because people is everywhere and someone could wander too close not knowing what that device is and because everyone is so far away no body to warn them other than using signs.
Industrial radiography uses very powerful gamma and x-ray sources and the controlled area around the source is usually around 30m so they could do something similar. I think the best thing they can do is to make remote controlled the switch to turn on the X-rays and place their device under ground level, be it they dig a hole, inside a large storm drain, use a small creek or a large gutter. That way the controlled area is much smaller and easier to manage and at the same time radiation is shielded by the ground.
If your hand and foot are getting post-exposure tingling sensation, they already absorbed close to a full sievert and have long crossed the threshold for cancer risk increase. People operating X-ray machines early in their creation would test them by doing precisely what you did with their hands in front of the fluorescent screen as routine. After a while of doing this their fingers began to necrose. You're past cancer risk and now headed towards full-blown ARS. The readings on your devices are consistent with such dosage.

Did some quick calculations. Assuming they showed half the experiments and each one was 10s long they still did not even reach the dose known to cause increased cancer risk, much less a lethal dose. Note that the values measured are intensity of R/h, not dose in R. They do not absorb a 100R dose for each run, that would take an hour in front of the tube.

I built a pulsed (marginally safer) version of this, and even at low power with shielding had adverse effects on test equipment. The images were barely visible to the naked eye from scintillator directly over the tube about every 5 pulses.
You should try making a lead shield behind and around the sides of the tube to focus the beam. Use a wooden stick to flip the switch to protect from shock

If you are itching after being exposed to intense x radiation you have cutaneous radiation injury CRI. Look it up for info. I’ve dealt with patients having this issue from other sources of over exposure to X radiation.

I think the most you guys have been exposed is about 1 minute cumulated time at an average body distance of 1 meter from the source, which is about 5-10 mSv cumulated, the equivalent of a CT-scan of the abdomen and pelvis. Your hand however (at around 30 cm from the source) could have been exposed to as much as 100 mSv, so about 10 CT-scans... Be carefull ! THREE THING TO CONSIDER WHEN PLAYING WITH RADIATION : 1) Minimise exposure time, 2) Maximise distance, 3) Maximise shielding. You might develop sarcoma of the hand in 10 years if you guy continue playing like this without keeping your distance.

Guys, surely scrap lead isn't that hard to come by in all of Donbass. Building a ridiculously high amperage backyard induction furnace to melt it, and then casting it into somewhat proper shielding would make for a great video. It might also spare you cancer down the line.

The reason your wires are shorting is because you have too much current in too small of a wire. this generates heat and messes up the insulation causing it to short. Get thicker guage wire even aluminum will work and insulate it well.
