Just imagine...Lucas decides to add a scene of Luke just looking at the sunset. Williams creates some music to fill in that screen time...and it turns out to be the most iconic scene in cinematic history.
Thats how you know theyre a good music composer
Apparently Williams originally had different music scored for this scene with an entirely different tone (Luke’s theme, and it sounded more fearful/angry) and Lucas asked him to redo it with Ben’s theme (the Force theme). Someone posted an edit with the original music edited in and I think in this case he made the right call.
Not the most. I argue that the twist in Empire is more iconic. There are a few other scenes in other movies/TV shows that come very close to this level of storytelling and cinematography. When silence, picture and music speak for themselves without exposition.
@@fork9001 don’t compare dc or marvel to this bozo star wars is timeless
@@anamku00 I'm not comparing the entire cinematic universes. Just direction, art, cinematography and storytelling in single scenes. For me, a scene that is very similar in terms of quality and direction is the part where Killmonger dies in Black Panther (although not as iconic and good as ANH). Not disagreeing that Star Wars had the most iconic and best delivered scenes.
This scene relates to us so much because we've all been there. Looking out beyond the horizon, fearful of facing our future while trying to leave the past behind.

Everything about this scene is perfect. The sunset. Luke. The music.
This is the very last moment of Luke Skywalker's innocence. He takes one last look to the horizon, wondering what else is our there. He would soon find out. Once he turned around, his entire life as he knew it was never the same again, for better and worse. John Williams score in this scene perfectly captures this moment. It's the purest moment in the entire saga. Everyone can relate to feeling trapped, unfulfilled, yearning and longing for something beyond your circumstances and mundane day-to-day. Bravo, to Mr Lucas, Mr Hamill, Mr Williams and Mr Kurtz.
Eloquently stated, an ode to a great film released 43 years ago today.

Beautifully put. Well done sir. Well done.
Great comment!
It only took 37 seconds to fully explain, and flesh out a character, and show what his motives are. This is one of the best examples of visual story telling.
***** Yet with the prequels we needed endless amounts of exposition and dialogue. According to Lucas the prequels were "better".
+Crusader Studios beautiful.
+manco82 Proof that directing is a young man's game. Too many years being treated like a God will do that to you I guess.
+Crusader Studios As someone who hasn't watched star wars the 37s are cleary not enough to fully explain the character or show his motives. I mean it's good and calming to look at and creates a sense of longing (therefore I'm interpreting that the character is adventerous and that'll probably leave his place. Also the fact that he seems a little bit frustrated at the beginning and then is calm after watching the suns reinforces my assumption) but I could interpret a lot more or less into it. You're praising it far too much. You're praising the scene for something that it doesn't do.
+hellschatt I honestly think you're overlooking obvious elements. The act of looking to the horizon and, from his expression, seeming to find something appealing within it-but he doesn't look hopeful; as you say, it is a sense of longing. He sighs and his expression falls, and then he turns away, resigned to the fact that he is trapped where he is. His motives are clear: he just wants to get out of here and make a life for himself.
And that *was* his character. Everything else that comes afterward is just him going with the flow and enjoying almost every minute of it. It doesn't provide any additional context, although it DOES serve to develop his character for the *next* movie.
The fact that it's a sunset could suggest that this part of his life is, indeed, almost over, but that's not immediately obvious.
And yes, I'm a fan of Star Wars-it's not my favorite franchise ever-but the scene is very effective. Star Wars is often beautifully shot; its problem, even in the originals, was always the dialog, which was at best uneven and at worst painful (especially in the prequels).
and so began the journey from humble farm boy to jedi hero of the rebellion.
One of the most beautiful, iconic shots only to be followed by the goofiest transition
One of the strongest scenes in the history of cinema. A poor young boy who is a farmer just stares at a sunset and is wondering. Why his life is like this? When will he get the chance to prove his worth? To fulfil his dreams? So much emotion without a single word. Just music

In storytelling all you need is a gaze, just a single scene of a character or characters looking to convey everything that’s going on. How they’re feeling, what’s happening in their lives, their convictions and conflict.
You don’t need dialogue or background narration all the time, sometimes all you need is a gaze.

Deep man haha
Here too
This scene is something that modern Star Wars can’t replicate even if they tried. So much emotion, the music, the scenery. Now it’s about big set pieces, CGI and action. That’s not what makes Star Wars amazing. It’s the heart, soul and the characters.
The best fantasy stories use their setting as a way to explore complex human emotions through extraordinary circumstances. This scene embodies that philosophy so phenomenally. It’s the best scene in 9 movies. I used to say Empire was my favorite, but that’s just the old edgy me. Star Wars is *the* perfect retelling of the legend of King Arthur, if you ask me. It is the embodiment of The Hero’s Journey. This will always be in my top 5 favorite movies of all time. This scene is the embodiment of why that is
This 36 seconds of music speaks volumes. I mean who hasn't stared off into the distance wondering what was coming next in life, or what else is out there waiting for you? It's a truly magical piece of music.

John Williams knew this would be iconic when he wrote this man. Such a great a shot and the score elevates the movie in a way like no other film has ever been able to do before it.
How can somebody watch the scene and not be moved by it, easily one of the best scenes in cinematic history, and in the original Star Wars trilogy. This is just one of those perfect scenes where there’s absolutely nothing wrong with it.
There is something about this particular scene. This cinematography, the twin sunset, the boy seeking out for adventure in a galaxy with endless mysteries and stories, and of course John Williams astonishingly beautiful score somehow manages to capture the entire essence of Star Wars in a nutshell.
Ladies and Gentleman: Here's one of if not THE greatest and most iconic scene in cinema history.

Star Wars is truly a masterpiece.
Israel Pallares Yep
Not sure if it's so iconic, someone who has never seen Star Wars might not know this, but then there's scenes such as The Battle of Yavin etc.
Rav Good point, but imo this scene is what personifies the series
Best scene in all of Star Wars to me and by that I'm by no means taking all the other great scenes lightly. It's just that this one is the most special to me.
Girls when there is a sunset: omg let’s take a pic
Boys when there is a sunset:
This is correct bro.
