I watched video, worked on my vcr dvd and now it is repaired and working again. Not bad for a 68 yr old woman with no technical experience. Great video.
The DVD part of my JVC combo wasn't working. That happened years ago when my son was about 3 years old and he stuffed 2 DVDs in the slot. Now he is 7 and obsessed with technology (he is on the autism spectrum) he kept asking me to try and fix the DVD (by the way we have another DVD player and a bluray player as well). I finally decided to humor him and came across this video. Used the qtip on the laser and... IT WORKS! Thank you.
also when your down with the vhs tape , use a vhs rewinder , first off you'll be preserving the gears and belts in the VCR portion of the player for quite a long time .
I worked and managed a repair shop, I thought it was a bit crazy when I learned shops just use paper to clean the heads. Just get some printer paper and soak it with alcohol and press it up against the video and slowly turn it. Rubbing alcohol has too much water in it, doesn't clean very well so shop around the drug stores for 91 or 99% alcohol or buy from a parts place.
avanola fernandez check out this channel called "12voltvids". The guy used to be in the repair business back in the day and fixes many things; from VCR's to power supplies, CD players, laserdisc players, cassette decks etc
If you watch this video, it is very good but NEVER CLEAN A VHS VCR HEAD DRUM WITH A CUE TIP. Never clean head drums with something that has fibers like cotton or cue tips. It can damage the heads. The best way to clean head drums is with a paper soaked with alchool. Nothing works best than that.
Thanks. I like the tips you have on your vids. I have a int that I learned back when the vcr was popular. I still have mine, i just don'tuse it much. The q-tip is handy but you need to worry about lint. They sell special lint free cloths for this, but you probably already have a ready supply of them. Paper coffee filters for drip coffee makes are lint free! This is handy for cleaning lenses too. Good luck.
If you’ve got lots of tapes that you’re going to be watching or recording onto don’t think that when the heads are worn out that’s it. If you can find spares they are relatively inexpensive although you might be able to pick, up a used but good replacement recorder on eBay for less. You will have to take your chance. Heads are easy to fit as well. You might need a “Head Puller”. But if you are careful you can usually remove them using fingers only.
Trying to finalize a disc on old Magnavox VCR/DVD recorder MRV700BR/17. Machine says disc if finalized but it wont play on a different machine so it does not recognize a finalization. Any help is appreciated.
My vhs player is almost exactly like this one but I have a problem. When I take the tape out, it gets stuck. Like the tape part of it doesn't come off of the spinning things when the casette is pushed out. Any idea how to fix this?
Had it working and when I added lube I spun one of the gears ever so slightly and now the gearing is off track and won't accept vhs tapes. Amy suggestions?
I have a Durabrand DBDVR01 DVDR-VCR Combo which only spins the VCR head after plugging in the power cord. No LEDs, no display, buttons don't react. I measured the voltages of the power supply, they are fine. I can't see blown caps and no damage either. From here I'm stuck, can't find a service manual or any data sheet. Would you have an idea where to look for
Have you tried tracing the voltages _from_ the power supply? Clearly it sounds like the PSU is fine, but something else on the power rail leading up to the other modules is failing. I'd start at the front panel power rail and check voltage on that...and around the front panel circuitry. With no front panel functionality, this should fit all of your symptoms. There might be just one failed component on that module.
Yeah this was great! I didnt think it wud work b'cuz my eye cover was alittle different but it's workin like a charm! Good Vcr info 2! Im going 2 try that on the other player. Tnx 4 a great video! 👍
I can play both VHS and DVD discs, but now I can't convert my VHS tapes to DVD. Doesn't read. It could be that some dust has gotten into the recording head of the DVD. I am stuck and would love to fix it myself. Fort Mill, SC
Try A cleaning CD. They are cheap and will clean the head with zero effort from you. Just stick it in, and turn it on. The spin wipes the head clean. could also be a capacitor issue. If there isn't enough current to drive the write level on the laser...just a _wild_ guess though.
Thanks for the video. I'm having trouble with my JVC DVD/VHS recorder combo. Everything on the DVD end works fine, playback etc, but I can't get the picture/sound to play from a VHS. The time progression shows in the little window like its playing, but no picture/sound playback. It almost seems like an input issue, but I'm not sure. Any ideas?
amazing video thank you - unfortunately I haven't been able to fix my vcr.. I have snow - aaallll snow no image. ive tried cleaning the heads. but I cant locate the optic eye. . . I have tv on vcr - its the same unit so I cant see round the inards of the TV.any suggestions would be great
Snow = RF noise. What you are watching is not the VCR at all, but rather a channel. Combination TVs have a separate "channel" for VCR. When you channel down on a TV/VCR combo below channel 2, it should show a blue screen for the VCR, or perhaps a blank screen. The VCR doesn't have an optic eye, but rather a large metal cylinder which contains 4-6 electromagnetic coils. This is tilted slightly and is a very lustrous shiny silver color. it is impossible to miss once you know what to look for. If you have no tape in there and just push the flap in front and shine a light inside you'll see it in the lower middle, tilted to the left and sticking up. If you are worried about it being dirty, and don't want to take the machine apart, I would recommend a simple VHS cleaning tape. They are around 7$ US and will do the job nicely. However, what you have described is not being in the VCR mode on the TV itself, and trying to pick up analog channels which aren't there anymore. So all you get is snow.
@@peterlamont647 i have a phillips vrc tv combo and i have a similar problem only recently has my tv stopped displaying the image but not the audio when i put in a vcr? You seem knowledgeable so please help me if you can
@@Thesleepypineapple Ya, that is a tough one to diagnose from afar... it could be that the video signal is not being amplified off of the tape, and thus no usable signal is being generated. A TV repair shop should be able to quickly repair that. Alternately, you could go through the entire video signal path and check the signal with an oscilloscope/curve tracer until you find the problem component. I say this because the audio and video signals are processed separately in VCRs.
@zimbabwean If you wanted to blindly repair it with no knowledge, a good "hail mary" approach is just to replace all the electrolytic capacitors in the unit. That may or may not fix it...it could be a transistor that failed. However, a failed capacitor is more likely. Sometimes they are obvious in that the top of the can is bulging, but I find that this isn't always the case. If you can identify where the video signal processing is being done(by tracing backward from the video signal output) then you can simply replace all the capacitors in that line of circuitry.

I'm afraid to clean it as abilities in working with such things are limited.

When I put my tape in the machine it grabs the tape and does not process so when I try to eject, it grabs and won't let go of the tape. I have to manually rewind the tape. What makes it grab all the time? I have an Emerson VCR it has "19 micron head" "DA-4Head Digital Tracking/quick play" if that helps.
The same one that has always been the most epic... In fact, there is no replacement, so be prepared to shell out a couple hunskies at least. It's the Panasonic DMR-EZ47V. ATSC tuner, LP that is as good as SP on most units, DL DVD and DVD RAM support, VP 10 hour recording on T-120 tapes, and HDMI/Component output. The list goes on, but it is by far the best ever made. You can also edit video on the machine itself, and watch while recording using DVD-RAM discs.
Hey I know this is a few years late but recently we tried to watch some old vhs tapes and the rewind function works, the tape moves but when we press play the message “A-Er” comes up and it doesn’t show anything. Do you know how to fix this? Thank you
so my roller guides are not pulling my film back and i have no idea what to do. i cleaned everything you said to clean, and still nothing. please help.
Much sager is to use a clean sheet of printer paper. I use to work in a shop and found out this is the way the techs do it. Soak a piece of paper in pure alcohol and press it against the head and slowly turn it. Don't move it up and down just press it firmly against the head to clean it.
when I attended a class held by CEMA Consumer Electronics Manufacturer's Association for VCR repair the teacher demonstrated how to clean the video heads. I don't think there was any printer paper handy so he took out a business card and used the back side of it to clean the heads.
please don't criticize, I was taught this method in a CEMA class they teach professional techs. I watched the teacher do it and no one complained. And I have seen professional techs do it this way.
My SD-V296KU DVD/Video has no sound - everything else works.. I don't think I have the wiring right- I have 3 wire connections plus the power cord. It must be something simple, but nothing is simple for me - can you help
JVC had this auto picture. only used it for like 5 days brother was gonna toss it. recorded soem difficult to track tapes. 3 tapes left suddenly the rubber roller is now rolling opposite. actually when the tape is first inserted it simply shuts the whole machine down. I hit eject the tape icon blinks. If I hit POWER thats just a bad idea. because in idle mode not play, FF or RW, the roller runs but the capatan? is running in the wrong direction which the rubber roller spins on thus a mobile tape starts rolling around that rubber roller and then into the machine and it never stops until it jams. Don't know why this is. Ordered another JVC model of the same model off ebay but still irritated not knowing why that roller is rolling opposite let alone shuts all the way down to begin with. and I know enough never to use a qtip on the head. only certain cleaners do I do so with the head.
If it won't automatically eject, get a paperclip and there should be a hole around the eject door area to stick the paperclip in gently, which will allow the door to open slightly then you can gently pull the tray open all the way to remove the dvd.

it's not good to use Qtips on vcr heads the fibers from the qtip can get into the video heads & clog or damage them. the black lines on the video drum are the heads you can count how many there are. on that vcr it should be four
Put a multimeter across it first to see what the setting was before you move anything. Then write down the ohms. That way if if figure out it wasn't a trim pot, you'll at least know where it was. Try greasing and manual spin everything instead. It worked at that setting from the factory, so it should work now.
Hello I have VCR and most of the time it works fine except sometimes I lose the picture and sound completely and just get a black screen. Then it comes back on after a few seconds. Any help or advice would be appreciated!
Can someone please help me get audio on my Samsung VCR&DVD combo video works just hear an annoying buzzing noise ive put the red&white cords everywhere and nothing. Please and thank you i want to show my daughter the classic disney movies
is the buzzing coming from speakers or inside the unit? you need to open the VCR and try to locate the source of the noise. maybe bad capacitors or bad motor like a fan. clean the inside of the unit. also nice pic
Honestly idk where the buzzing is coming from i know the cord works since i connect to a regular dvd player and works. Now i was playing the movie w/out audio and the picture started messing up. Thinking of giving up :( and thank you for the pic comment.
@@lorettasalas5772 This is caused by poor grounding of the RCA signal/poor connection of the RCA cable itself. I have the same issue on my unit (VCR). I find that I have to twist the cables around in the socket to find the "sweet spot" where there is minimal buzzing. I am still working on a way to fix it permanently, but I find that just twisting various cables usually identifies the culprit, then I just kind of twist that one around until it does the job with minimal buzzing. Another thing I have noticed is that my laptop power supplies will cause all kinds of noise on the outlet. To the point where my antenna stops working and I can't watch TV! This can also cause buzzing. These cheap modern power supplies are noisy and interfere with other electronics in the house. Even to the point where they don't function at all.
More aptly, it shuts off as soon as the motor tries to spin up would be my guess(it doesn't spin up or barely budges, then switches off). Meaning, that it pulls more power than is available, and thus the voltage potential drops. This is indicative that there isn't enough stored power to allow for motor spin up without the wave form collapsing. This is a clear sign that whichever capacitor is involved in this circuit simply isn't storing any/very little energy. When the voltage drops down to near zero, all you have is current the device effectively turns off.
in my vhs player,,,the cassette goes inside then the to rollers take the tape to vhs head...but the tape doesnt play....the wheels doesn't run..what may be the problem???????
Check voltage to the motor. If there is voltage, then grease that motor. Don't get any grease on the head itself...only the drive motor. It is probably gummed up.
That is clearly a shorted component. This will likely be in the power supply. Check for blackened components and discoloration on the PCB. Check for continuity in places where there should not be. Replace/remove components and test.
Just watched several DVD programs and everything was okay. Removed disk and turned it off. Back to watching tv and after three hours suddenly DVD player is flashing ERROR. (Err...) Power button will not stop it. What the heck do I do to turn it off? :-(
Grease up all the moving parts/check if there is a broken square belt. If there is a broken square belt, order a set of assorted ones and try them on until you find one that fits. If no belts are present, grease everything up, and then manually move them to un-gum them and free them up. Then try operating it again once you are sure everything is moving freely. Check teh power supply voltages and make sure correct voltages are being supplied.
NEVER, NEVER EVER....use Q-tips, or like objects, on video heads. They are very delicate objects and easily damaged. You can by alcohol pads at drug stores, try those for cleaning. Note when cleaning make sure that the heads are not revolving.
We have a vcr/dvd player that plays video but will not play discs. When we use the console or the remote and press DVD, the yellow lighted "dvd" on the front screen does not illuminate; only "vcr" is illuminated; it won't switch from tape to disc. How to fix this? Hubby getting irritated he cannot play movie discs. Movies he's only seen a zillion times. :)
Open her up and give her some grease on the gears and riding assembly. Spray the motor with WD40. Watch out to cover the read head of the DVD player...don't get any grease or oil on that. That should fix it 100%.
my vcr/dvd combo set won't turn off, a tape got stuck inside the vcr and it won't turn off the power button stays red and a tape is stuck inside. I unplugged it but it didn't fix it. any suggestions?
@@cynthiathompson1359 My unit wont let you just pull it out. @sgf129 A good option is to manually power the ejection motor externally. You can use a 9V battery or something. If you do so, make sure to disconnect the motor from the internal circuitry in the VCR first... otherwise you may get magic smoke. If you don't have a soldering iron, just cut the wire in a place you can join it together again with electrical tape. If it wont turn because its all done turning one way, you switch the wire's direction around (reverse polarity) and it should wind out the other way. This will eject the tape and the VCR has no say in the matter. If it refuses to eject at that point, it will definitely give you a good starting point for figuring out _why_ it won't eject under VCR control.

The tape itself was still inside wrapped around I don't know what. I had to reach inside the door and wrestle my tape (The Avengers, 1963) out. It was tangled in something. I'm afraid to clean it as abilities in working with such things are limited.
GoVideo dvd-vcr combo units-- one has dvd shows disc error and not reading. The other combo unit has problem loading vcr tapes.Any suggestions or troubleshooting ideas?
When I put my tape in the machine it grabs the tape and does not process so when I try to eject, it grabs and won't let go of the tape. I have to manually rewind the tape. What makes it grab all the time? I have an Emerson VCR it has "19 micron head" "DA-4Head Digital Tracking/quick play" if that helps.
What DVD/VXR model do you recommend in 2018?
The same one that has always been the most epic... In fact, there is no replacement, so be prepared to shell out a couple hunskies at least. It's the Panasonic DMR-EZ47V. ATSC tuner, LP that is as good as SP on most units, DL DVD and DVD RAM support, VP 10 hour recording on T-120 tapes, and HDMI/Component output. The list goes on, but it is by far the best ever made. You can also edit video on the machine itself, and watch while recording using DVD-RAM discs.
@@peterlamont647, I have two Panasonic DMR-EZ48V VCR/DVD units, and I agree, they are still bullet proof after many years of use.
I have a crackling sound when watching the VCR--on my combo the DVD plays and sound's fine any suggestion's...???
Dirty heads? Bad audio amplifier on the VCR, check components on the PCB.
Hey I know this is a few years late but recently we tried to watch some old vhs tapes and the rewind function works, the tape moves but when we press play the message “A-Er” comes up and it doesn’t show anything. Do you know how to fix this? Thank you
my vcr has coax output but no av output do you have any ideas?
Hey do you happen to know how to access the setup menu without original remote
so my roller guides are not pulling my film back and i have no idea what to do. i cleaned everything you said to clean, and still nothing. please help.
Grease! Lots of grease!!!!!! put grease all over everything (not the heads obviously). That ought to fix it.
Much sager is to use a clean sheet of printer paper. I use to work in a shop and found out this is the way the techs do it. Soak a piece of paper in pure alcohol and press it against the head and slowly turn it. Don't move it up and down just press it firmly against the head to clean it.
make sure it's an old magazine too with lots of color printing on it!
when I attended a class held by CEMA Consumer Electronics Manufacturer's Association for VCR repair the teacher demonstrated how to clean the video heads. I don't think there was any printer paper handy so he took out a business card and used the back side of it to clean the heads.
I seem to recall the service manuals saying to use chamois swabs but I never saw anyone use them.
please don't criticize, I was taught this method in a CEMA class they teach professional techs.
Great video:). What about if the audio only has stopped on the vcr?
I have a Hitachi DVD/ VCR, would like to know how to repair it. I put the tape in the VCR, it loads but then shuts the VCR!
I believe I have 2 dvds stuck in my Sony dvd/vcr recorder. Any suggestions?
If it won't automatically eject, get a paperclip and there should be a hole around the eject door area to stick the paperclip in gently, which will allow the door to open slightly then you can gently pull the tray open all the way to remove the dvd.
My DVD/VCR combo takes a disc or tape, but won't play and won't spit out the disc or VHS tape. I have to unplug it completely for it to spit the stuff out, is there anything I can do to fix it?
My Hitachi VRC/DVD player will not eject the VHS tape ..I push the on button and the player comes on for about 10 to 15 sec then turns itself off any suggestions ? ?I removed the Tape and cleaned all the heads with alcohol and rolled the gear put the tape back in it started to play than stop and turned itself off and tape will not eject ? used different tapes ...I did this several times to no avail ....HELP
My dad's Vcr DVD combo with not open the DVD play anymore?
it's not good to use Qtips on vcr heads the fibers from the qtip can get into the video heads & clog or damage them. the black lines on the video drum are the heads you can count how many there are. on that vcr it should be four
Is it possible to add a tuner to a vcr/dvd recorder?
What if you need to adjust the potentiometer setting?
Put a multimeter across it first to see what the setting was before you move anything. Then write down the ohms. That way if if figure out it wasn't a trim pot, you'll at least know where it was. Try greasing and manual spin everything instead. It worked at that setting from the factory, so it should work now.
Hello I have VCR and most of the time it works fine except sometimes I lose the picture and sound completely and just get a black screen. Then it comes back on after a few seconds. I'm guessing this means there is a loose connection, but can anyone tell me what connection I should be looking at inside? I've checked my rca phono leads and they are not the problem.
What if say the tape stops in the middle of the movie and will only show a blue screen
my denon dvd player just shuts off soon as the disc tray closes? any ideas?
My dad used rubbing alcohol to clean the heads and ruined the vcr. How do you avoid that?
Don't use qtips
Thank you!!! Been trying figure out what ta do ta make mine work again.
my VCR won't come on when I plug it up. Can I fix that
Roshawann Moton bub
+Roshawann Moton: Maybe needs the fuse replacing.
I have a Sony SLV-D350P and when I push the play on the DVD it reads "lock". Other wise it doesn't do anything. How can I unlock it?
My DVD/VCR recorder blows out the fuse when plugged in. Changed the fuse and it continues to blow. What could be causing the problem
Unplug it for a few days.
The drawer won't open on my DVD player. How to fix? I also have a DVD/VCR combo. VCR part works fine.
Joan Allabaugh
Mine too. How did you fix it?
Grease up all the moving parts/check if there is a broken square belt. If there is a broken square belt, order a set of assorted ones and try them on until you find one that fits. If no belts are present, grease everything up, and then manually move them to un-gum them and free them up. Then try operating it again once you are sure everything is moving freely. Check teh power supply voltages and make sure correct voltages are being supplied.
Is tthis impossible for those tvs with built-in vcr?
I have taken an old vcr apart and cleaned the rollers and video head with acohol and it plays the video but the audio sucks very low and a humming.
How do you fix a vcr combo were the dvd part of it dosent spin the disk
I have a Sony SLV-D271P DVD and VCR Combo need be aware of how to install it
My VCR ended up some mechanical issue and it won't played. Can you please help
samsung dvd -v9800 combow works well but has snow and skips on vsr .!
my dvd combo keeps turning on and off will not stop for a couple minutes then goes off. i turn it back on and it starts turningbon and off on and off.
recap your power supply.
When I turn my VCR/DVD combo, the light blinks on and off and cannot turn it off unless I unplug the machine.. Tapes will not go in!
Good lord, don't tell people to use a Q-tip or toilet paper on a video head. Get some chamois swabs and do it correctly.
NEVER, NEVER EVER....use Q-tips, or like objects, on video heads. They are very delicate objects and easily damaged. You can by alcohol pads at drug stores, try those for cleaning. Note when cleaning make sure that the heads are not revolving.
Loose cotton + 1800 RPM = Disaster. [edit: Or a really cool new loom design...]
panasonic dvd/vhs recorder disc tray does not work ???
Open her up and give her some grease on the gears and riding assembly. Spray the motor with WD40. Watch out to cover the read head of the DVD player...don't get any grease or oil on that. That should fix it 100%.
my friend thank you for this video amazing help
thanks man! really good video!
My display won’t light up on the dvd combo! Anybody know how to repair?
This video was spot on
my vcr/dvd combo set won't turn off, a tape got stuck inside the vcr and it won't turn off the power button stays red and a tape is stuck inside. I unplugged it but it didn't fix it. any suggestions?
+sgf129 a tech friend boldly reached into the VCR slot, reached down and pulled out the stuck tape
Those two pings that are supposed to pull the tape to the head, doesn't move at all on my vcr.
couldbe useful if you invest in a good work light or two, perhaps a tripod?
What do you do if it doesn’t even power on?
You have no idea. That is not a repair, that is maintenance. If you snag a piece of that swap, you will destroy the tape heads.
Ya, I think this video did more harm to more poor VCRs than anything else.
What if the gears do not turn the tape.
Im having a problem with the tape player...can you watch my video and tell me what to do to fix it..
Signed mom with two rough kids
youre very good at TV repairs, not so good with the VCR.
I have a vcr dvd player power was cut off for abt hour while tech was hooking up generator cord when power was turned back on cable was out called comcast, next day they sent a tech out to check it he said my vcr was bad n charged me 40 dollars to unhook it was working fine before power got turned off so I m trying to find somebody that work on them in mechanicsville va 23111
