  • At the time that this episode first dropped, it was hit with a claim from a certain billion-dollar wrastlin’ organization over one of the ads-problem was, nothing in the episode belonged to them. In short, they were willing to fight to the death over it and I wasn’t.
    Thanks to a cease-and-desist order on the part of the ACTUAL owner of the aforementioned ad, we are now able to present this episode uncut.

    I called the laugh line when I was a kid (1-900-505-1212). When the guy asks "you called, what did you hear?" and she laughs... that's LITERALLY THE LAUGH LINE. It LAUGHS AT YOU.
    Occasionally tells an unfunny tale... mostly laughs in your face.
    I called 12 times.

    The rumor of DTMF tones that would auto dial numbers if a phone just happened to be off the hook at the time the ad was playing. I think that is from those rapid digital beep strings you used to get spurts of on channels like USA or TBS in the 80s 90s in between idents and commercials and programs resuming. I'd hear it outside of 900 commercials, so, it wasn't that. I get the basis of the rumor because: it happened more frequently in late hours for whatever reason.

    • @tomhekker
      @tomhekker 3 роки тому +6

      TV stations were using DTMF tones back then to control broadcasting equipment as well, so it makes sense that you might have heard a couple of tones at some weird times.
      They were used in the US for local ad insertion, to mark the cue points where a local TV station might insert local ads that weren’t carried on the satellite feed from the network.

    Reminds me of the 80s movie 976-Evil in which a boy keeps calling a 976 number that tells scary stories but by calling it he's unknowingly opening the gates to hell. If I'm not mistaken it was directed by Wes Craven. Also as a child of the 80s and 90s I vividly remember all the 900 numbers. It seemed like anything that was popular in the 80s had a number you could call both for adults and kids. I remember my mom telling me as a kid that the Santa hotline was just a scam to get money and I was forbidden to call it. However one night an ad came on the tv for the 900 number and it basically said Who do you think is the hottest man in Hollywood? Call now and tell us! I remember being surprised to see my mom (who normally hated those commercials) dialing the number and when asked by a recording to name the hottest man in Hollywood my mom yelled" Mel Gibson !! "And quickly hung up the phone. Our next phone bill charged her nearly 5 dollars for that call and she was pissed! Lol that was around 89/90 and to this day I still tease her for calling such a dumb hotline. I remember starting around 91 or 92 there wasn't much if any of those numbers aimed at kids anymore. It was mostly a party line one for singles and of course the ones with gorgeous women in bras and panties promising the caller "a good time " they were especially popular on Friday and Saturday nights when USA's Up all night show with Gilbert Gotfried hosting lol. The 80s and early 90s was a strange time. 🤔

    It's funny how we were thousands of miles apart, but had a similar 900 history: here in Brazil, we also had a system identical to you 1-900 (here it was 0-900), although pricing was optional (it was also used for phone shopping, without actually charging for the call, only credit cards for purchases with operators). However, it was also abused by children, specially in the early to mid 90s when services providing sneak peaks to cartoon show's episodes for the next week started to appear (you'd call and listen to a summary and sound bites of whatever anime or cartoon show was going to air as the next episode). It was also used for sex hot lines, and, more frequently in the late 90s, horoscope and fake astrology (the 900 number in Brazil is now, among the Gen X, synonym with the bizarre "Criswell meets Liberace" Puerto Rican astrologer and con man Walter Mercado - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walter_Mercado).
    When the state owned phone companies were broken and sold out in the late 90s (similar to how Ma Bell's monopoly ended in America), and all phone service was privatized, new rules and regulations came about - and thus the 900 numbers were closed out and no such service is now allowed. We do have a 0-300 for corporations that allows for a local rate to be charged regardless of where the caller calls from (the difference billed to the company), a 0-500 used only for special cases for non-profit organizations doing Telethons or donations (with a fixed donation value), and a 0-800 for toll free (identical to America's 1-800).

    Not the music, it's literally the ACTUAL SOUND from the first 30 seconds of the movie! Like they just dubbed the audio from the NOTLD tape over their commercial master, ROFL!
    I know Romero screwed up the copyrights, making the movie public domain accidentally, but wow! That's just... lazy!

    They caught on later here, mainly 1990 to 2005, with a peak around 1997. We had the jokes and adult stuff, along with quizes and dial a hit, but for some reason Psychics were the most popular, 6 or 7 pages in the TV guide full of all psychic ads charging $5.99 per minute +GST (12.5% tax) and several scam quizzes where you never won. They were called 0900 numbers here.
