If I took on that system then I bet you know how to sort it by year, month, day, image #, image name? I'm not only a photographer, I'm also an artist. How do I set this up before I even import them? I like your videos!
You can set up the file structure how you want on import or you can do it ahead of time on your hard drives, however you feel comfortable doing it. To sort by year and date from the library module you use the tool bar at the top and choose "Metadata", from there you can pick the year, month, day. You can also choose the camera, lenses, and any labels you may have set on them.
Care to explain about the different versions of the lightroom catalog that get stored on your computer at different times and also having made 1:1 previews on importing, I now have a nearly full hard drive. I need to get make space on the hard drive so is there a way to delete the huge file with 1:1 previews without losing the original images? Thanks
The older versions of the catalog are just that, older versions which get upgraded with a new file as necessary. You can keep them if you want as the size is minor. There is also a “previews” file which holds all the 1:1 previews. This one can end up being pretty big depending on your catalog size (mine is 100 gig right now). You can have Lightroom remove your preview files. You would need to select all your photos and then go to the Library menu at the top. Toward the bottom of the menu there is a previews option. Hover over that and more options fly out. One of those is to discard the previews. Hope this helps.
