The Bard's Tale - Original vs Remastered Versions (1985 - 2018) Comparison

- I compare the following versions:
1) The Bard's Tale: 1985 for DOS in EGA
2) The Bard's Tale Remastered & Resnarkled: 2004 for Windows (similar to the original Atari/Amiga version)
3) The Bard's Tale Trilogy Volume 1: 2018 for Windows
Bard's Tale is a RPG classic, a dungeon crawler and a predecessor for games like Eye of the Beholder. I've put a lot of work into this comparison, so I'd be grateful for a Like.
#bardstale #bardstaleremastered
The 2004 version is actually the 1987 Apple IIGS version straight up emulated. It even starts with the IIGS system beep. This was my favorite original release.
Yup and the Amiga version did also use this Graphics
@@litjellyfish As did the Atari ST, albeit with perhaps some slight shifting of shades--to fit it's 512 color palette vs. the IIGS's and Amiga's 4096.
@@RetroDawn yeah. Also I think the Amiga uses 32 right? With ST 16?
Yeah that's the version we had in the 80s
Graphics were amazing for 1985.
@@IcyTorment nah, nobody remembers that game.. bards tale? everyone with a computer and a brain was on all over it
"Win 2004" is really the (emulated) Apple IIGS version that was included with the 2004 Bard's Tale. :) Otherwise, nice video.
Thank you for the video, it really does illustrate how faithful the 2018 remaster really is.
You mean "is not."
I wish they would do a remaster of the Might and Magic series.
Might and Magic is one of my favorite sagas
I loved mapping all of varn on My first playthrought in book one
And exploring the land in worlds of xeen was amazing
1 and 2 could really use and remaster.3 and up i think has aged pretty well
@@matthi321 Exactly.
Oh god no. Not if it's going to be like this. If the "remastered" versions were just like Greyface's patches, to allow them to better run on modern systems, well, we already have a few of those, for 6 & 7 in particular. We just need them for all the games.
Not sure Ubisoft could do a good job of it, somehow.
Thanks for the comparison.
These games rocked the fn' casba.. 🔥
i played both the old and new versions they reproduced it perfect and i love the auto map vs graph paper lol
the look is almost a great throw back to the game and enlarged 3d window is fantastic
Does GOG sell the original 1980s versions of the game, or am I stuck with the remasters?
I am torn. I was all excited to play the original trilogy, but the remastered version is super tempting! (can be on rebate on GOG and Steam).
What a difference 33 years can make when it comes PC graphics technology. Even though the version I owned back in '86 was the Commodore 64 version.
Yup it took them 33 years to do something that art direction wise looks like shit compared to the original DOS version.
I just got this from GOG and I gotta go to work. Ug...can’t wait to play this tonight.
I've gotten hooked on the remaster :D
remaster style makes it look like a flash game.
Yes it looks like shit
True, But the feel is all there. I can get over the “flash” looking artwork and just enjoy the game for what it is.
Oh my childhood mapping out on graph paper.
I have a subtle shout-out to the "Bard's Tale" games in my series of books ("Diamond Dragons"). 💪😎🤟 I also have some nods to Ultima and Might & Magic in there as well.
🐲✨🐲✨🐲✨
How can we get a copy of the 2018 Windows version? I'm still playing emulator off of USB drive of the 1985 version and using Excel to graph map my way as I go.
You can buy it from Steam
So apparently their remaking the original Wasteland in a similar way to the bards tale 2018 remake. If they can make the old game look half this great, I'd love to play it. XD
Do you have a link about the remake project? This is interesting for me, too.
@@GameIntrosFinales Here's where I found out about it. rpgcodex.net/forums/index.php?threads/wasteland-1-30th-anniversary-edition-remaster-coming-in-early-2019.122411/
Most of the information seems to be limited to their twitter feed right now, but I'm looking forward to it. It and Wasteland 3 of course. XD
Thank you, that's good to know! And with Wasteland 3, I agree, but let's hope they devote enough resources to the development, so we don't have a bug disaster.
@@GameIntrosFinales Ha yeah that's true. I might love wasteland 2 but the thing functions so low on my computer it's a real struggle. Still once you get past the major bugs, there's a real gold mine there.
Are these major bugs still present in the latest version? I haven't played it yet but wanted to before Wasteland 3.
Very nice presentation, missing is the Amiga version, way ahead of its time..
Concerning the trilogy... I can't get it out of legacy mode.. whats the trick?
The Amiga version was just a port of the Apple IIGS version which is what they used for the 2004 release
@@juliedunken1150 well at least it wasn't the PC version
Gosh. Nostalgia just ain't what it used to be.
Looks good! Thanks for the quick comparison
Why DOS Version? The Amiga Version looked better
Yup way better
To show the graphic differences. The amiga version is the same visually as the Apple IIGS which forms the base for the "remastered" 2004 Win version
Sold.
siempre ame este tipo de juegos, tendre que agarra mi diccionario de ingles...
2004 and 2018 version feels empty, so much details not exists anymore
There is no 2004 version. That's just the Apple IIgs version, running on an emulator.
Hey fellow adventurers, here comes my new video about the History of The Bard's Tale: ua-cam.com/video/tjWoN-i2vfo/v-deo.html
i'm playing the new one and it's a isometric top down game. nothing like a blobber. so confused.
This may be my new favorite video!
Thanks!
We're planning on retweeting it at some point, and I think Brian already might have so hopefully you get due credit for the work you put into this! The team loves it!
Hey, phimseto, that sounds fantastic :) With team you really mean inXile and with Brian you mean Brian Fargo? Are you a member of inXile? If that's the case I bow my head in awe :)
LOL, I work here and I still bow my head in awe sometimes. A lot of veterans and heroes here for me. And yes, I was the inXile-side producer for The Bard's Tale Trilogy. Really loved the heck out of this vid. Keep up the great work, and thank you for featuring us!
Thank you! And keep up the great work, too :)
I would like to give you some money for this, or at least contact you to discuss doing so. How can I do that?
Thanks, but it's enough to just like and share the video and subscribe to my channel :) Perhaps one day I'll start a patreon site...
@@GameIntrosFinales PayPal please. ;-) Let me give you SOMETHING! This video saved me so much time and energy, and some money, too, as I now know with certainty that I shouldn't waste my money on the "remastered" version.
The 2018 "remastered" version is clearly not a "remastering" of anything at all. In all other forms of media, say when you remaster music or a film, the goal is to go back to the masters - the actual original source material - and faithfully reproduce that original source material in the best, most pristine condition possible, and to release that content in a form that is easily playable on modern systems and devices. Rather, the 2018 release is simply one of the worst remakes I've ever seen. And this outstanding comparison video has made my decision very easy: I'll happily be going with the 2004 emulated trilogy.
The remake is great.
c64 version, best version
The remasters new are literally looks like a 13 year old did it
Remaster gasoline spaceship I'm happy for apples that come did 24 years could be this Lamborghini.
First like first watching & first comment
Thanks, man!
😉
OMG you won the internet and are quite possibly the coolest person ever.

Why does the art get progressively worse?
