    Hello ASL Heroes!!!
    Hey, I could really use your help.
    If you’ve enjoyed having access to an expert in ASL you can help me continue my work for you. A small (automatic) monthly donation from you would instantly make a big difference here at the studio because teachers don’t earn much and I could use some help paying for server and domain hosting for Lifeprint.com.
    Right now you can help out a humble (not to mention kind, caring, generous, compassionate, helpful, friendly, fair, and hard-working) ASL teacher -- just go here and a few clicks later you too will be a true “ASL Hero!”

    Thanks!

      Out of curiosity, do subscriptions to your asl.tc site help at all with the payment for lifeprint.com? I forgot I signed up for the monthly subscription there about 5 years ago (LOL) and didn't actually start utilizing it until a few months ago. Ha! Silly me.

      Oh hey yes indeed the asl.tc subscription site is very helpful toward supporting the overall "ASL University" effort. Thus you can consider yourself an official "ASL Hero" as well as a "patron" of ASLU! Bravo!

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language  5 років тому +2

      Focus first on genuinely meeting Deaf people and making friends with local Deaf Adults. You can learn more from real, genuine conversations with Deaf folks than you can from "taking classes."
      If the University offers classes (whether for a major or not) you should consider taking those classes. Check with your local Library and have the librarian order interpreting related books for you via inter-library loan. Or invest some money and order used books on "interpreting" from Amazon.com Also, visit www.RID.org and read their whole website. Then find the closest chapter of RID to where you live and start attending meetings.

      I totally agree with Bill's comment. I just completed the 1st semester of Community College ASL class and, although I did learn a lot of history, grammar, and individual signs, I feel like it provided very little time actually "communicating" in ASL! I have decided to spend the same amount of money that tuition cost me, to now take weekly private lessons instead, where I can spend an hour actually communicating in sign with a deaf person. We also have a local monthly Deaf meet-up group that I will plan to attend (when I get up the courage!)

    How about closed captioning?

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language  5 років тому +9

      I prefer to use the PowerPoint slides to provide just enough "L1 Support" ("L1" meaning "first language") to make it possible for (native English speaker) viewers to learn the content.
      In effect, the slides "are" a form of captioning. The important content is "captioned" via the slides.

    So this isn't really related to the video, but I have a question and this seemed like the best place to put it. I'm not deaf, and nobody I know is d/Deaf, but I'm learning ASL just because I'm a philologist, and now I'm teaching my baby daughter, too. Is there a term for any of this? She's not a CODA, b/c I'm not deaf, but "COHAWLSLJB" (child of hearing adult who learned sign language just because) doesn't have the same ring to it.
