Well, you didn't say anything I wasn't expecting, but I enjoyed the way you said it! I particularly like the clothing store analogy. I always feel I should be able to sing anything, but attempting some things will just sound ridiculous and others will "just" require training and lots of practice to pull off. I know that, but I still want to sing both Paul Robeson and Rob Halford songs...
Definitely true. I've been through the ringer with percussion/drumset in general. I ultimately specialized in rudimental drumming/drumline, and got a chance to march drum corps for a couple summers. When it came to drumset, the fast rudimental playing complemented the fast punk, thrash, metal, ska, and other fast genres I'm into, extremely well. Those genres transfer well within one another from a drumset standpoint too. However, if you expect me to sit down and play smooth jazz right now that I played during my high school days... sorry, it's not going to be nearly as smooth anymore... haha. Specialization is a thing, and I've definitely drifted over time.
Holy wow did I accept this early. Single strokes & technique problems halting my growth kinda pushed me to accepting it. I'm only starting to clean double bass & get into poly-rhythms now after over 20 years of playing. I recently started a foray into UX/UI Design, & boy are you met with a billion things to learn in tech. GET SMALL!
I realized a long time ago while listening to a heavy metal song that I'm not a master of anything except maybe puppets. Finger puppets, that is. They call me Ocre. Medi Ocre lol.

@@AndrewRooneyDrums : only harsh if a person is unrealistic or a perfectionist. We all have to accept that areas of expertise are very limited for the great majority of us, and that's ok.
If there were, let's say, 10 styles of drumming, and I know there are many more, in over fifty years of playing I've 'mastered' none of them. I've gotten pretty good at maybe 3 styles, but a master, no way.😢
That's a pro attitude. Always need to understand where we are. I love afro cuban... I play it... I'm not Cuban though. At a distinct disadvantage. I'd need to live there to live the music
Historically the drum set is a novelty that don't match traditional folk/ethnic music at all. When you think of it it's quite strange having one guy banging away the rhythm for a whole group in modern music

Far too much territory to cover to be good at everything. And that's okay!

Me also. I realised at jazz school I can't actually play anything to a pro level
