I know you were concerned about talking junk about downtown but I grew up in the area and I not only agree with everything you said but also found this video pretty funny. Downtown has its perks, it's within walking distance of most white collar non-military jobs, is quiet at night, close to certain big name schools like St. Andrew's, and most high rises have great views. I think it's the best area for people who don't want a car. The crime around chinatown and the eerie feeling after 6:30 pm is absolutely a thing tho. Great video!
Mahalo, Meg, for sharing your personal response. As someone who grew up in this area your comment means a lot. This is just one of those places in Honolulu you gotta experience for yourself, isn't it?
@@movingtohawaiiexperience is key yes ! Mahalo 🌺
I lived at Kukui Plaza (Diamond Head) from 1984 until 1995 and loved it. I worked downtown for the government and walked to work. It was really nice back then, the shopping and food on Fort Street Mall was so convenient, The Bus was only 50 cents to ride all over the island, things were high but prices not insane like they are now. I feel so sad knowing how much my beautiful Hawaii has changed since I left. I treasure the time I was lucky enough to live there, the best years of my life to be honest.
Loved this video !!! You both are so REAL !! Enjoying visiting downtown 🌺♥️ Mahalo
I've been watching this channel due to me going to Hawaii Pacific in a few years for college. It made me smile to hear it, lol
What part of Honolulu haven't you guys covered?! Great job! Love to see you guys keep up this incredible pace of content👏
There are still a few places we haven't featured yet. Plus, a lot of these areas overlap, or the lines in between are blurry. Some locals say this is that, and others say that is this. At the end of the day we're all literally on the same islands ☀
Homeless situation blew up up in the 2010-2020s. Not quite SF craziness, but a smaller scale. Honolulu isn't the only city with this issue though, it's pretty widespread throughout the US unfortunately. Honolulu is my favorite US city regardless.

Mahalo ♥️♥️🌺🌺
We just got a condo in honolulu towers! We are ecstatic. Great video!
Congratulations Dr. A 🤙 Feel free to share some Pro’s & Con’s with us as someone who literally just moved to downtown.
CONGRATS Dr. A! How could we have warned your business and been your real estate team.
Best time at Imperial Plaza in Kakaako, I really miss it.
The more I watch your videos, the more it makes me want to live on Oahu 😂🤙🏽
Thank you for all of the educating you all do!
Thanks for another great video!
Thanks for watching 🤙
So excellent! Thank you!😎
When you said "Harbor Court was built like they thought this was what the futures going to look like " 😂 lol, I think the same thing every time I see the place.
You guys are great, and you I appreciate how you told some of the history for better or worse it's apart of the culture. I think it would help folks moving here and should hear more of this kind of thing.
Love you Mahi. I love your personality. I like you too, Derek. Keep on giving more videos
Thank you!
Great video as always🤙🏼🤙🏼
Mahalo for watching 🤙
I work in downtown during the day lived here all my life but don't feel safe after dark because of the chronic and mentally challenged homeless 😔
I actually never seen any of this area before. Mahalo !
Honolulu has it's fair share of pocketed communities
Derek, I don't remember or I forgot, if it's possible to ride a motorcycle down Hotel street after certain hours ?
Downtown is more D.C…. Love it
Oh I remember going to the Sub club, as a high school JR/sr, on Hotel street. Punk and college rock bands played shows there(KTUH!), circa 88/89 days. Nostalgia!!!
Living in Yokohama now(over 10years!). 9-10 years from, I never imagined I could return in retirement. But 400,000 -650,000 for 1-2 bedroom condo; wow! Just to know I could even imagine it…mmm cool
I never heard of a condo complex with a bowling alley. That is pretty cool!
Yep! This is the only one I know of
A friend of mine, a local girl (Gail Kaito) went to Mid-Pac Institute before she came to Whitman on da Mainland to go to college. I nevah knew where was Mid-Pac, even!
6:00 The only time I ever heard my last name consistently said correctly was in Hawaii and of course saying this street name is a big reason why as the pronunciation is very similar. I think I have a picture of me next to a street sign.
If you want to work in HNL, be an elevator repairman. Between the BoH downtown and the Prince in AM, you will always have a job.
Aloha! I loved working at Bishop Square.
Any interesting stories to share?
If I want to see downtown Honolulu, I watch old Hawaii 5-0 episodes (tos). OTOH, to enjoy Hawaii today I head over to .
Disney character panties are the most cutest and comfortable kind of panties to wear!!!
So can't wait to get back. Lived for a few years wasn't sure came back to the mainland and should have never left. It sucks here is putting it lightly. Gonna be buying on the island just not sure. West side best side
Welcome home!! And hit us up!! Where on the mainland did you fo
@@movingtohawaii I stay in Florida and this ain't it. Grew up around DC and moved to Honolulu. Stayed in town for a little bit then moved to Waianae. Nothing like the west side. Completely different world on the island. Shooting for June of 23 to come back. Never leaving again nothing can beat it.
I lived right there in Honolulu tower in the 90’s and 2000’s
Is it true that there's a lot of drug use on that neighborhood.
I got loss on that side of town 2 years ago maybe 3 and all we saw was really super quiet streets and house less people moving about.
Well, the experience you shared is a very accurate description of what many people expect to encounter in this part of Honolulu.
@@movingtohawaii I was interested in one of the buildings ( pretty new one ) when I asked about walking around at nite ( solo female not college age closer to senior era 😃 ) the person said she suggested I contact the local police department to get the answer ( now that was very interesting 🤣🙃 ) and so I did, turns out during the day fine but, at nighttime bunch of heavy on the drug meth scene and loads of crime ( he says they are really working on trying to clean up the area ) is what I was told… ( from the local police 👮♀️ station officer ) so sad because was close to Aloha Tower which I love !! ( went to a luau there in June ) the nice officer recommended staying east….🌺
If im younger... say in my 40s, do I need to worry about buying a condo that was built in the 60s or 70s? Can they demolish the building and I lose all the money I spent on it? Not sure how that works?
Stay where you at we don’t need more people living here Braddah. No more enough houses for us natives
I stay away from that area, if I have to buy something I go in and I GO OUT!.Always been bothered y the homeless asking change ,cigarettes and in the China town food court Manakea market place get choke homeless. Srry I'm from here but I no can anymore....too sad and disgusting!
Her downtown is different from how I see downtown!
@@maygoya2204I definitely need to go there at night ( when I get back ) and check the vibes out for myself, everyone sees things from different points of view. Crime though is not acceptable and I certainly hope I don’t see any of that, I can sense danger and will know by being there at night if it’s worth living downtown….Chinatown I’m sure is amazing during the day I hear and really look forward to experiencing it 🌺
Lived on Oahu for 10 years in the 1990"s. Loved the Island overall. Downtown however was my least favorite part of the Island.
Downtown is dirty and dangerous. Don't get caught down there when the sun goes down. 😳
When the sun goes down... these streets transform
Really?
That’s what I heard from the police station officer and they know the real scoop such a sad thing though I hope it cleans up soon I love the downtown as they called “ Gotham “ vibes, the buildings beautiful architecture and the ships coming in over by Aloha Tower it’s very special and honestly I can feel all the ancient sacred history very rich and full Aloha there….when the crime disappears it’s gonna be a happening place no doubt ♥️🌺
@@movingtohawaiihahaha transform that’s a good one ! Hahaha Batmobile needed 😂
Derek - you probably get this a lot but do people mistaken you for BJ Penn? hah
In this video one of the tour bus drivers thought I was BJ HAHA. We kinda show it towards the end.
@@movingtohawaii oh snap! i just saw that part now hahah...das too funny! BJ for Gov and Derek for Lt. Gov...das the dream team right there! mahalo for the vids!
@@dvs001 haha nah cannot have two jiu jitsu guys that don’t know anything about politics… or maybe you can?!
Kukui Plaza get no love??
Might have to do another one
That would be dope. Downtown is definitely underrated as a place to live. For sure you don't want to raise a family here but you're closer to everything you want and need at a fraction of the cost most other places on the island.
@@MaesterBKI agree totally underrated and another video would be stellar! Mahalo 🌺
There was a thing about Obama mama worked at Club Hubba Hubba.!?
Downtowney...
Hotel Street, where da Mahus are RADICAL!
Hui, da buggahs stay real, still.
How come Mahe no like talk about that?
Ho, you like “shnack”?!
Guarantee!
Nu'uanu = cool elevation
Thanks for the definition 🤙 It’s funny how clueless we can be with such familiar names and places
Pittbulls? No Thanks
