Little late, but awesome campaign, special shout out to dude on left, Warren? I like that he's asking questions that a newbie (such as myself) would ask and this really helps understand the rules if I ever get to play
Thanks. I thought when Justin read the card he just skipped the bit relating to understanding 3+. But what I think is important is that people can see with a game this complex, mistakes will happen. But not to kick yourself too hard if you can do some rewinds in places, and ultimately have fun.
I liked how this was handled. The point of the game is to have fun and build the story. In the end I bet it won't matter as a Kingdom of Death awaits...
It happens. Best thing to do is roll with it and not get too bent out of shape and keep the game going. Plus we are up against the clock trying to get in as many sessions in while I was there.
This is a fantastic way to introduce KD:M. It helped immensely on our first session. Thank you for creating it. Bonus for it being a production that was blocked, mic'd and filmed in a very professional manner.
Warren, the father, immediately says "We raise our children with affection!" and he allows no debate on this. I don't know about you guys, but that moment made me cry. Warren's wife chose the best one, no doubt about it!
At 25:38, when the lion collides with a survivor that survivor is knocked down. If the lion stops on the space where the survivor is, they are knocked back 5 and knocked down.
TheBeastsOfWar the lion was supposed to jump backward, correct? And if so, it would have collided with, knocked down, and knocked back the two survivors in the blind spot.
Late to the party but I am just learning how to play this game on TTS and honestly, the KDM core manual is not enough lol. I am SO GLAD you guys did this series. I am getting a lot of my questions answered.
40:00 Oh gosh, i love the idea of chopping that one last ai card off and then saying: alright, we now stay here for an excessive amount of turns, bathing in the endless fountain of blood spouting from the lion's maw, and return to the settlement with *INFINITY* insanity points, just for the lulz. Given that 3 insanity points is already considered insane, i wonder how roleplaying a character with THAT much insanity would go like. Thanks for the Playthrough!
Damn. You guys play much less conservatively than I do. My group is on LY09 and we still have two of our original four founding stones. I'd never even considered the idea of using the founding stone right away for the plus 1 strength like you guys did in the prequel fight.
I had loved the first two videos in this series thanks. The game looks fantastic and Chris explains in such detail that I could pretty much play out the box. No only to find the damn thing...
3 years of working part time in a GW store running demo games, and also teaching undergrads, means presenting things clearly is somewhat second nature now for me.
Please...Keep Up The Game Play! Y'all have the most Concise, Conversation, Camera Angles, Information, Video Quality about this Game...And Fun...Than Any one I Have Found on "The You Tube" Keep Up The Hard Work! And Thank's to Everyone behind the Camera and Production Crew! P.S. I was Lucky Enough to Get a Copy of 1.5 KD:M on Kickstarter this Time around. Within 35 min. It was Funded!!! It Still has 40+ days to go.
Thanks. It would be really easy to play the game in a procedural manner and make the game really boring. Collectively telling the story is key, and as you can see the ideas are beginning to emerge with regards to tactics and items.
I love you guys! You show exactly what happens and explain it perfectly. I was watching to get a few tips on my own playthroughs. I learned a lot. Thank you!!
So, I just heard of this game and stumbled across this playthrough/instructional video series. This is probably one of the best, if not the best video series. Not necessarily for the game, but you seem to find the magic line of in-depth coverage balanced with high-level instruction that just makes this game flow. I'm not really a D & D fan, but there is something about this game that is pulling me into the darkness. This seems like the main story is very linear, but there appears to be enough randomness to it that it would be a unique story every time you played it.
The main story is somewhat linear. There is a clear end game. But, how you get there, the hunts you go on, the events that happen on each hunt, the other monsters that you face, and the decisions you take as your settlement grows, are all such that the path to the end game is very non-linear.
should the table be announced beforehand on the hunt event, investigating the rubbles? I feel it's more thematic if you don't? sorry I never played the game
I wish I had the money to get into the new kickstarter for the game. In less than a day it has a little less than $4 million and 9000 backers. It is crazy. Th core game is significantly more expensive than it was in the first kickstarter, but probably worth the investment if you like the game.
Just because the supply/demand ratio is terrible for a product, it doesn't always mean it is worth the price. In this case it might, but I am not in a position to give at least $300 (with shipping costs) for something that will arrive 1 year later. Then again, the game is very deep and from the changes they introduce to 1.5 version, it will only get better. The thing with this game is that it will offer a ton of extra KS exclusives that you feel obligated to go for at least the $350 pledge. Those who can afford it will no doubt enjoy it immensely. Those who don't, will try their luck with BBG's contest, assuming there will be one. btw, I think backers should consider themselves lucky if they get the game in the second half of 2018.
I take it back. I thought I saw Dec 2018, but I checked again and it says Estimated Delivery: December 2020, so I guess my prediction was 2 years short. I guess if it takes this long, it will at least be on time. Taken from the KS page: "This is a best case scenario, in case our campaign gets insanely huge! 3-4 years development, production & transportation cycle to 100% finish every promise we might make during this campaign is realistic. "
The core game is still scheduled for Summer 2017. So unless you are backing for all the promos and expansions, you won't have to wait 3-4 years. Also taken from the KS Page: Wave 1 - Estimated Delivery Summer 2017 Core Game / 1.4 Update Pack Wave 2 - Estimated Delivery Spring 2018 Gambler's Box, Promo and cross-over figures Wave 3 - Estimated Delivery Spring 2019 New Expansions Wave 4 & Beyond - Estimated Delivery Winter 2020
I'm REALLY enjoying this series ! I especially like how in the game you get realistic loot items from the creatures and NOT like 5 gold pieces from killing a Giant Rat...
Everyone loves these videos-when are you going to release the rest?? You already missed the hype and views that would've come along with the Kickstarter backers getting their core sets.
If you get Tabletop simulator on Steam (50% off right now at $9.99) you can download the workshop of KDM, which is the full game with expansions and play on your PC for free. :)
this game looks really cool, but this is the first I'm hearing of it as I am new to gaming. I know there is a kickstarter for 1.5 could someone please tell me how many of these games are out and should I get the kickstarter or is that an expansion.
Thank you for really going through this game. Looks absolutely amazing not sure when I'll,ever play as the cheapest I've seen this is 900 bucks US dollar on eBay.
We used to play the tall grass tiles positioned separately as you did in your game. I now believe they should be put together. When you are placing the terrain for the SA that it enjoys munching on, it is a similar two tile icon on the card - and you cannot place six of these separately given the rules for placement. Thoughts, people?
I hope you guys keep playing through this game. Very fun to watch and listen to. Also invite back that Super Saiyan Adam Poots with an English accent. :D
Thanks. We have another video out tomorrow, and then two more. Then we should be recording more early next year. And yes, more stuff will be painted in time for those videos. This is an all painted play through. :D
You're Chris Handley?! Nice to put a face to your voice, been listening to the podcasts for a while now. They keep me company during video game development. Keep up the stellar work!
Yup that be me. If it isn't me replying on this account it will be Mike. Glad to know you guys like the show. We've been less productive lately simply because of lots of stuff going on IRL. But more stuff will be out soon. The holidays is a good time to catch up on reading.
I know its years later but these videos helped me decide to try the game out myself. Trying to find other players playing the campaign left me wondering why actions happened or choices were made. But now after watching this I was able to make heads and tails out of the "so many pieces" soup. And even jumped into starting my own campaign.
What disadvantage was that? Mistakes crop up really because I was trying to keep the game running at a good pace, and letting Warren and Justin read the cards etc.
It was just a minor one, when you moved that one survivor out of the tall grass at the beginning. It's not 6 squares between you and the lion, it's 6 squares away from the lion.
Oh, by the way, I know you've recorded a bunch of these already, but for future reference, going after the Screaming Antelope is a really good idea if you had a good first hunt (which you obviously did). It's essentially a loot piñata with some nasty surprises for underprepared survivors.
First lantern year was uploaded 4 weeks ago prior to this, I wonder when will the Third Lantern Year video be up. I'm saying this because I'm enjoying the narration and looking forward for more.
Hopefully I will be back over with the BoW crew recording some more early next year. May well sort out trying to add in some of the expansions as we play through.
Do they eventually realize that there is no "thrown" weapon proficiency? If I remember correctly, bone darts and katanas are among the few weapons there is no proficiency track for (none of the katana cards actually have the keyword "sword").
Also, the fact that you guys chose protect the young means you also get the benefit of the principle card which tells you to roll twice on the intimacy chart and pick one. So you should have rolled two dice in the case where you got a '2'
Actually it was on oversight but a fair one. For example there is not katana weapon proficiency in the game, but it does exist in an expansion. So the daggers are a thrown weapon type, but with a so far undetailed proficiency.
+Darker Days Radio Fair enough. To be honest, the only way you would know darts didn't have a proficiency would be to read the FAQ or to notice that there simply wasn't a card for them. Maybe if we get some more thrown weapons in the new expansions, we'll see a new proficiency. I was actually flipping through the glossary the other day just to refresh my memory when I came across the entry for finesse which had a similar description; "This currently has no impact on the core game but is one of those annoying keywords required for expansions".
Ah yeah. Haha. It makes no difference but good eyes. I think it was because we set it up one way for the cameras, and then switched the choice. Oh well.
I was also hoping to ask why you did not put a card under the lion on the track. The lion can move and I believe you're supposed to place a card beneath it so the space doesn't end up being empty when it leaves.
fair enough. Since there's some minor ambiguity as to whether a card should be placed under the monster or not I normally just assume the rule of death and shove a card under it anyway to avoid digging out another card mid hunt phase :p.
So, you killed the Lion in first round but you still fight it again? Maybe I missed something but what instructs that next monster is also a lion? Could it have been something else?
New monsters are unlocked based upon the Lantern Year you have reached. Also the first lion we fight is the easy "training" lion, to show how the game works. The lion fought this hunt was tougher and had a far more randomised AI and HL deck. We do fight more monsters as they get unlocked.
PokePokeu also monsters have difficulty levels which means they get new cards added and traits etc that alter how the monster acts and how much damage it deals.
I wish it really was just $400 for the game... it cost so much more. All the paint and tools alone to set up the minis would take hundreds and a ton of hours...
Painting is not essential, you could work towards painting them up. At the very least you need some glue, and a file/mouldline remover. Probably an Extra 25 bucks. Army painter so a really good beginner paint set for when you want to go down that route, but it's not essential to get enjoyment out of the game.
@@Grieva-SeeD- I just learned about professional painting services! I dont need to worry about it at least for now, I can ship off the sprigs to be assembled and painted by people who are 20x better than I am and it will hold its value :D
It's odd that the game goes out of its way to make it very clear that any reproduction is only from the result of consensual intimacy, however cannibalizing the fresh corpse of a woman that gave birth is a framed as normal within the world and a fun game mechanic.
Game looks OK, but the theme of the game seems to be randomness. Between the dice and the hit locations and the dice again ect... Not my cup of tea I guess. But it is pretty fun to watch
You can not farm insanity, one rule is you must ALWAYS benefit the monster. You always must be at the disadvantage. You can not take advantage of the game intentionally that way.
Ah yeah. Not sure why we didn't. It happens - it's what you get for teaching the game in a play through, and need to make choices promptly while being recorded, and up against the clock.
Nope, recent game had one of my team mates reach about 52 insanity. That character was also blind, deaf and noseless which just added to the sheer ridiculousness of her. Lucky she hit like a tank.
Warren should have chosen Survival of the Fittest. Hard Mode ON! =) PS: they say, you haven't played KD:M if you haven't played with SotF (old version) at least once =)
The guy in the middle is metagaming a bit. He's did a bunch in the first fight because he knew what was coming up, and it seems his did a little bit in the endeavors. ("I'm gonna say affection just cause...... it's quite good.")
Warren looks so bored, he's not having a good time at all. the blonde hair but is alpha gaming way way to much. He's not letting Justin and Warren discover anything by themselves. he's spoiling future events, and just stepping all over everyone else's toes.
I think what you are forgetting is that this is part of what will be an ongoing series, and given we have to record these in a limited time frame, a lot of what I am doing is to to quickly get Warren and Justin up to speed with the rules. Something that becomes clear by the next two videos.
Well, I had Enraged and Blood Thirsty come out within 3 monster turns, on a Year 1 Lion too. Let's just say I flipped the table, on tabletop simulator, because I kept missing and he kept hitting without ripping. My survivors kept losing eyes, arms getting twisted, movement being dropped, but no dismemberments. You remove those token off of Blood Thirsty and then the Lion gets his free basic attack. Oh? You got damaged? Well, put a token on Blood Thirsty again. Draw an IA card and attack. Oh? You got damaged again? Well, put ANOTHER token on Blood Thirsty. Survivor's turn. Miss. Miss. Hit and wound. Hit and oh... a reflex/failure, which lets the Lion hit me... Oh? You got damaged AGAIN?! WELL, GUESS WHAT, REPEAT EVERYTHING AGAIN. Fucking christ, that annoyed me. Oh well, maybe next time. I think I am going to either start over... or house rule a Dark Souls-esque thing until I get a better understanding on gear, planning ahead, etc. x.x
I know I’m late here, but you shouldn’t have had so many founding stones. You had one remaining when coming out of the starter fight, they are so OP with the auto crits, you shouldn’t get anymore than four and possibly one for new survivors.
It seems like there's alot of haggling specially over stats, rules, and interpretation. Another convoluted clunky tabletop game. Whatever did happened with less is more. Alot of the time isn't even spent on the game/adventure. Over convolution does not equate to complexity. AR tech/sensors needs to be implemented to streamline these games specially in terms of keeping track of stats, resource management, and board conditions via tablet and AR eye-wear. Maybe i'm being to harsh, judging base on these players.
AR is a fantastic technology. If you want to check out some of our previous Weekender shows, we do talk about AR and how it could improve the tabletop experience. BoW - John.
Could not disagree with you more...have spent hundreds of hours on the game and its amazing. Its much more fluid then it seems and once you have played a campaign the rules start to feel familiar. Having said that I come from a board game/RPG background and have never been a huge fan of miniatures games like Warhammer.
I couldn't help, but cringe when they chose a male character to add to the party in Abby's place, then made the child male and then had the event where a female dies and no unnamed males >< All that even after Chris said that it's important to keep the sexes balances, it's such a male way of acting x)
I find it extremely distracting when they make errors. They dont get Ammonia as Im sure none of their characters has Understanding 3. Makes it hard to watch for me.
Easily the best play through of Monster on UA-cam! Very clear on what's happening and it shows how enjoyable both phases of the game are!
Glad you enjoyed it.
I just wanted to acknowledge Warren's master-beater gag, because no one else did, either in comments or at the table!
deano2099 coming to comment that same thing
Little late, but awesome campaign, special shout out to dude on left, Warren? I like that he's asking questions that a newbie (such as myself) would ask and this really helps understand the rules if I ever get to play
Sounds like you were only supposed to gain ammonia if someone had Understanding of 3+ no? ---- nevermind. Keep watching.
I'm glad they caught it. Ammonia is a game changing innovation since it unlocks leather shields.
Thanks. I thought when Justin read the card he just skipped the bit relating to understanding 3+. But what I think is important is that people can see with a game this complex, mistakes will happen. But not to kick yourself too hard if you can do some rewinds in places, and ultimately have fun.
Plus the game will be sure to compensate for any involuntary cheating ;)
"Because if we don't, what was the point?"
@@jgarettc13 warms my cold, dead heart 🖤
@@Ajehy It's good. The benefits of survival of the fittest are really good though :p. Definitely using these quotes in DND at some point.

I love these lets plays of KDM, everything is explained way more clearly, how many Lantern years are we expecting of this?
5 have been recorded.
We will have to get Chris back for more, this game has been fantastic to play through. and I can't wait to see what happens next :)

Chris is a boss. I subscribed to the channel to watch all of these playthroughs.
Luca Ambrogiani thanks.

It's basically a digital copy of the board game, so you have to do everything "by hand" just like if you were playing the physical vesion.
Also Tabletop Simulator has got a VR plugin as well so that would make it almost as if you had the game :)
Do you get the customizable minis and armor sets in the digital version? This would be AWESOME!!!

You actually started the Hunt Event track from the "Starvation" end of the board :) (it's usually the last tile...)
Ah yeah.
I would have placed it if the monster had moved. Plus an empty space always triggers at least 1 hunt event. So again it is a formality.
fair enough. Since there's some minor ambiguity as to whether a card should be placed under the monster or not I normally just assume the rule of death and shove a card under it anyway to avoid digging out another card mid hunt phase :p.
In our games we only place the monster-specific hunt cards and roll normally on the empty spaces for this very reason, saves some time from the setup.
Wow imagine if Bolt action was this in depth " 9mm fires at (insert velocity based on wind direction and distance) hits leg movement -1"
I hope you continue this!
3 more lantern years to come and then more will be recorded early next year.
Stick to your morals Warren! Lead the camp into righteousness
When can we expect the next Lantern Year?
I'm shocked in two games they didn't pull a reflex card
So, you killed the Lion in first round but you still fight it again? Maybe I missed something but what instructs that next monster is also a lion? Could it have been something else?
New monsters are unlocked based upon the Lantern Year you have reached. Also the first lion we fight is the easy "training" lion, to show how the game works. The lion fought this hunt was tougher and had a far more randomised AI and HL deck.
We do fight more monsters as they get unlocked.
"Master Beater"...i had to groan hearing that :)
This is one amazing game pity it costs so much in my country of Australia.
Please continue this into the end! XD
This is good, more please.
Have the makers of the game ever mentioned a PC/Console version of the game?
tabletop simulator has the 1.5 version of it.
When's year 3 coming??
This Friday.
Darker Days Radio That is today! Need it to get through work
Hahah. Sorry I don't have control over the release of that video. I wanna see it too!
i love this series! if you guy were on patreon i would definitely subscribe
You can get a Backstage pass for Beasts of War to fund them, and DDR has a red bubble store which is to help fund us so we can give out prizes etc.
Man this game looks amazing but holy shit is there a lot of bookkeeping.
Aaaaaaah eugenics. Wonderful!
I really REALLY wish there was an XCOM themed game with these mechanics. It would work so incredibly well.
How repetitive is the game if you need to grind on the same monster couple years to get resource?
PokePokeu the monsters vary because their ai decks are randomly constructed. hunt events and terrain can also alter the monster.
Ooft just pledged $250. Dammit.
When is year 3 planned? ;)
William Baker tomorrow
Awesome, can't wait!
Will be Year 3 only, or 4 & 5 as well ? ;)
We have 4 and 5 too
All released tomorrow?
Great! Thanks for doing those!
William Baker no just year 3
47:47 lol, I see what you did there.
Good stuff
keep it up
It's odd that the game goes out of its way to make it very clear that any reproduction is only from the result of consensual intimacy, however cannibalizing the fresh corpse of a woman that gave birth is a framed as normal within the world and a fun game mechanic.
wise fool of the lantern xD
Game looks OK, but the theme of the game seems to be randomness. Between the dice and the hit locations and the dice again ect... Not my cup of tea I guess. But it is pretty fun to watch
That was awesome
You can not farm insanity, one rule is you must ALWAYS benefit the monster. You always must be at the disadvantage. You can not take advantage of the game intentionally that way.
It’s the Shin Megami Tensei of tabletops.
You have forgotten about the - 1 accuracy and toughness tokens
also you had Sinew and Bone and make the cat gut Bow instead of the darts and give them as backup to another survivor
The bow needed the Great Cat Bones. And yes, totally forgot the toughness tokens and accuracy tokens. Oh well.
Bow only need bone and sinew, reread the card.... 1:05:12 you can see it clearly =P unless the photo is incorrect
Ah yeah. Not sure why we didn't. It happens - it's what you get for teaching the game in a play through, and need to make choices promptly while being recorded, and up against the clock.
not blaming, just saying you are wromg and you should feel bad!!! ;P
Poor John :D
More please!!!!!
47:54 wait what? 🤣🤣🤣
1:19:20 there's no max insanity I think.
Yeah. I was thinking ahead to how insanity 20+ is bad when facing the antelope.
Nope, recent game had one of my team mates reach about 52 insanity. That character was also blind, deaf and noseless which just added to the sheer ridiculousness of her. Lucky she hit like a tank.
"master beater" ...
Warren should have chosen Survival of the Fittest. Hard Mode ON! =)
PS: they say, you haven't played KD:M if you haven't played with SotF (old version) at least once =)
doesn't protect the young let you roll twice on the intimacy chart and take the higher result?
Wow did I enjoy this. You guys are awesome! I felt like I was right there with you. Thank you!

43:35 at 0.25 speed
kek master beater.
Sorry man but the guy on the left has to go.. some of the questions he ask. I feel sorry for the guy in the middle lol
I couldn't help, but cringe when they chose a male character to add to the party in Abby's place, then made the child male and then had the event where a female dies and no unnamed males ><
All that even after Chris said that it's important to keep the sexes balances, it's such a male way of acting x)
I find it extremely distracting when they make errors. They dont get Ammonia as Im sure none of their characters has Understanding 3. Makes it hard to watch for me.
