- Our family decided on a whim to spend winter break and New Year in Florida. The three of us hopped in our Cirrus SR22, which is an incredibly capable and perfect plane for this trip. Round trip was just under 2,000 miles and this video is our return leg from Melbourne, FL to Farmingdale, NY. We left at 10AM and arrived around 5PM with a 90 minute stop for lunch and fuel. Could've made it non stop for under 5 1/2 hours but our bladders say otherwise.

Managing your fluid intake is an important part of pre-flight preparation. Drinking a pint of coffee before a five hour flight is about as daft as it gets. Coffee is a diuretic (A diuretic is any substance that promotes diuresis, the increased production of urine)
The atmosphere tends to get drier with altitude so you should take in small quantities of water constantly during sustained flights to avoid dehydration. A guide to your level of hydration is the color of your urine. The darker it is the more dehydrated you are.
Ensuring the physical health of pilot and passengers is just as important as all pre-flight checks.

Your wife is brave...for sipping coffee in a plane with no lav. Seriously, we routinely do the 16 hour, 950 mile drive between our homes in FL and the DC area, and I'm betting at least one in my family would have legs crossed somewhere over Georgia.
We have emergency pee bags that turns urine into jelly. ✌️

Going up for first flight Saturday with instructor listening and watching you shows how far I have yet to go besides flying communications have to be pretty tough to feel confident in.

My inlaws live close to Little Washington. When I dream of a solo cross-country, that is where I would go. I live close to Currituck county airport.

Awesome video! At 10:43 when you showed the windmill farm, that’s my home town! Elizabeth City, NC. Stop into the Coast Guard base (ECG) sometime! Great folks over there and the aviation students at the local college do pancake breakfast’s from time to time. Happy flying!

I took this trip last week except I went from north of Tampa to Bangor Maine and I was in an rv10. Long, but easy flight.

Thanks pal! As I get older, any trip over 3.5 hours will need to have a bathroom break in-between. We do have "pee bags" that turns urine into solids, but it's not easy to use especially when you have friends with you...lol.

Great video. I would definitely be getting a little itchy taking the sharkbite route off the NJ/NY shore like that in a piston, especially down at 3K and in the cold time of year. Unless I'm headed to the Bahamas I'd really rather not try the single-use seaplane option if I can help it :)

True fact 🤣 My SR22 and I are based up at BED so I've passed through N90's airspace a few times. Your home tower is a lot chattier than ours. The BED controllers are great but pretty buttoned up, maybe because Boston FSDO used to be on the field. Appreciate your videos as I'm hoping to start doing some longer XC trips this year and it's useful to see how others do them.

Bravo, Sir! Just found your channel. One question, why did you ad Pito heat, early in the flight, while in the clouds? I'm VFR certified. Don't know about that one? Didn't look like icing conditions?
I turned on Pitot b/c the temperature inside the cloud was approaching freezing. Just didn't want to chance it. :)

The SR22 is a mid-level, cross country plane well-suited for flat, non mountainous terrain. It can be equipped to fly in IMC.
If I lived near the Rockies a SR22 Turbo would be much better suited.
@@SlowAsianDriver Yes. I owned an SR22T for that reason...I live in Reno and Las Vegas and fly over the Sierras regularly. Also fly over the rockies to visit friends in Steamboat and Denver. The west is full of mountains. The East only has the blue ridge to deal with. Florida has nothing.

I'm surprised how many people have difficulties with turbulence, but would have no issue when driving down a bumpy road. It's pretty much the same thing.

Yes, she did a Cirrus Partner in Command course and loved it. Now she's much more interested flying and less fearful in turbulence.

I've found most GA aircraft's fuel tanks are sized appropriately to match the pilot's bladder.
Cirrus SR22 holds 92 gallon or about 6.5 hours...so either I'm getting old or the tank's capacity is huge. LOL.
@@SlowAsianDriver I'm still a low time pilot, so I use 60 min day, 90 min night for reserves. ;)

Thank Kevin. I did most of my training in a C172. I have done some in the Cirrus but nothing intensive until delivery time. I will definitely do a video on ownership cost and headaches in the future.

I’ve put a 360 on the windshield like you have (inspired by you), but it overheats 10 minutes into recording. Does fine outside. How do you keep yours from overheating from the sun?
Mine almost never overheats. It happened only once when I was in FL, left the camera mounted and went to lunch. May wanna give GoPro a call and have them check the camera. Are you using any after market batteries?
Would love to get my own airplane one day. (Airline pilot) what made you pick the cirrus vs the competitors?
We narrowed it down to Cirrus & Bonanza as both are similarly priced. The parachute was an easy sell to our wives. The Cirrus is also faster, more useful load and has a longer range than the G36 Bonanza.

Thank you and a great question Steve! At around 400 hours I still consider myself a relatively low time pilot. So I take every opportunity to learn and train. Each person’s comfort level is different and comes with experience. Fly as often as possible and get to know your plane. Good luck and feel free to reach out with any question. @@petersmith8134 Utterly false--in fact the statistics show that general aviation craft are about 30 times as deadly per hour of use than cars. Not 30 percent, 30 TIMES. Even accounting for the 3x faster speed of these aircraft they are an order of magnitude deadlier than highway travel (at least in the US).
My wife and i are thinking of getting a sr22 to train and get our pilot cert with. Is the stick odd to master id think a two handed control in front would be easier than a one handed would be harder to get used to. Also im right handed but in america we drive on the left. Is that a hard thing to overcome?
Hi Dion, the stick is easy to adapt. I’m right handed as well and it’s not an issue. I felt comfortable on day one. As for training, I would recommend you and your wife train in a traditional trainer like Cessna 172, a Piper Cherokee or a Cirrus SR20. The SR22 is a lot of plane…it’s kinda like learning to drive in a Ferrari. Also during Primary Training, students will make mistakes like hard landing aka controlled crash…lol. So it’s better to abuse a school’s plane instead of your own. Once you have your Private certificate, then consider getting a SR20 or 22 to train for your instrument rating. Thanks pal! At 75% (ROP) around 7-9K feet you can expect SR22 NA to true around 175-179 kts. I usually fly LOP around 65% and I get 160 kts at 13.4 gal/hr vs 17.8 gal/hr.
@@SlowAsianDriver Converting to statute miles to compare to cars that's 13.7 mpg at 65% and 11.4 mpg at 75%. For that trip(I'm estimating about 880nm/1012sm) you're looking at 74 gals vs 89 gals. That's an extra 15 gals to save about a half hour of time. I'd say 65% is the right choice :-)
not to mention 15 gals at $7/gal is $105 for 30 mins :)
Are you allowed to listen to music in between communications for the long ride or watch movies on an iPad or something like that ?
SiriusXM is part of the plane option so yes. Music automatically stops when there’s ATC communication.

How much quicker would it have been in a Cirrus Vision Jet?
Great question! I would’ve estimate it to be around 40 min for the following reasons:
1. Vision Jet will need to make a fuel stop.
2. Vision Jet will ended up flying a STAR Arrival which takes longer to land.
3. Vision Jet isn’t the fastest so along the way, ATC will likely move you out of the way for faster jets and increase the trip distance and time.
Again this is just my educated guess.
