Your reaction to Johny driving into the mud was great. Johny is a master at his craft.

My experience with geo textile is that it allows gravel to walk away. We have a huge roll of it on hand , but probably won’t use it. Used it in past around water tanks.

Having a front end loader bucket you can use it to lower onto the ground and lift the machine and push it out of a mud hole if you ever get stuck.

Speaking of the danger of farm equipment. The fella that used to hay my fields was working in his cabbed tractor. I went out to say hello and as we were talking, his foot slipped off the clutch and he jerked forward about 2 foot before he could stomp on the clutch again. Thankfully I wasn’t standing in front of the rear tire because that would have hurt! Same thing when connecting implements. I try to never stand where I can get mangled, and when I do, I have zero concern with telling absolutely anyone to put the tractor in neutral.
I was told this story a few years ago about an old farmer that was teaching his wife how to use the bush hog because he could no longer mount the tractor. During the instruction, her foot slipped off the clutch, and she ran him over, Bush hog and all and I’ll never forget that.

Gosh that is a horrible story.,I’m sure the wife never got over that accident. Machinery of any kind is dangerous, it has no conscious and will hurt or kill you in an instant.

So you have said in a previous rock skirt video that the cows don't like to stand or linger on a rock skirt.
Does the rock skirt do any "damage" to the hoofs of your grazers?
Do the rock skirts need any long term maintenance ?

    • @gregjudyregenerativerancher

We have numerous rock skirts in for 7 years now with zero maintenance

The grazers don't linger, but if any came off limping, Greg would question it.

Thanks for the video! I am huge fan of rock skirts after watching all your videos. How’s Johnny doing? I know it’s been awhile when his wife passed away. I’m sure it’s still hard for him. I wish he lived closer to me to build me a pond.

Have you had to top dress, not for looks but because of settling, with more rock on any of your current ones? If not, how long do you think they will last before you need to?

I wanted to second your comment about 'it can happen to anybody.' My uncle had been a heavy equipment operator and mechanic all his adult life, and he was GOOD at it. He was doing something with a backhoe in his own yard, and the hoe apparently hit a big branch overhead and popped back on him and broke his neck. (He lived for another year, paralyzed from the neck down.) He knew what he was doing, just a moment's inattention was all it took.

Do you use rock skirts on ponds with sheep? If so, do you use the same size rock?

Have you done any videos on bad weeds like buttercup and perilla? I'm wondering if they tend to fade away on rotational grazing or take further effort.

This is a task best left to dry periods. Typically Summer but maybe it has been dry this Spring in Boone County Missouri. Friends in Bowling Green Missouri got a good wet one last week, however a hundred miles East in Central Illinois we just got the lightning & thunder.
