- Hey you dirty potters! i hope you had a good thanks giving. were back with a demo on how i run my skutt 181 for a bisque kiln. ive had a lot of questions from potters new and old asking how i run my kiln so i figured i would do a video on it :)
**** this is a very basic explanation of how to run a manual kiln
note that because i had some thick pieces i candles this far longer than 2 hours on the second switch but i still usually wait hours than 2 hours again before putting it on high.

p.s this is the first video with the new camera, tell me how you like it :)
I call mine Grandma because it was hers and I’m finally firing it after it rested for over 20 years. Thanks for your video, I watched it ten times to build up my confidence to go for it.
I have so much more confidence about running a kiln by myself now! Thank you!
thank you so much for making this video!!! I just picked up a (Yep, very cheap) skutt 181 and your instruction on the cones is just so incredibly helpful!!
Thank you so much for this video! I'm an art teacher who has inherited a couple of manual Skutt's for my class with an incomprehensible manual. This was so helpful.
My test kiln's name is Gumball and my large Skutt kiln is Smeagle (because he holds the Precious). Loved your presentation!
I so want to steal that
Yep! Naming kilns is common for me and the ceramic artists I know. When I was an undergrad, the kilns in our ceramic studio were all named after the Jetson characters. So the kilns were named: George, Jane, Elroy, Astro, and Rosie. I recently received two older manual electric kilns (that I still need to name, Yay!)and I'm used to firing with a digital electric kiln, so HUGE thanks for your video. I asked the previous owner the firing process and she was gave me minimal vague directions. So again, THANK YOU for the much more detailed instructions!
These comments butter my toast.
This video makes me so incredibly happy 😊 I have no idea what I’m doing and these are the vibes I want to learn with. So excited to binge your ENTIRE video collection now!!
Hello, from my high school art classes up here in Kotzebue, AK. We watched your video so that my students knew what I was doing with their clay. We decided to vote on a name for the kiln, she is now named Burnet. Killem was a close second so her full name is Burnet Killem.
So I bought a 181 manual skutt thats old as dirt and never been fired for 70 bucks on facebook market. No furniture, no stand and as far as I can tell they don't even make an outlet for that plug anymore which doesn't matter cause were I put it doesn't even have electricity ran to it. Got a new plug and have an electrician coming by this weekend to wire her up and put in a new breaker. Just gotta get litteraly everything else to make her work😂. I've been watching you'r stuff for a while and wanted a refresher since I used a manual in college. I thoroughly enjoyed this video!
I appreciate all the time and energy you put into your videos! This was super helpful.
Wow!! Finally a potter with a sense of humour...I never thought of naming my kiln! I just got one and I name my cars...so I am just gonna have to name my kiln....this is gonna rock!!! Thanks for the great video!
Thank you for taking the time! I’ve put this off for years scared to take the leap! I feel better now!
You are THE BEST. Just got a used skitt kiln. Only was fired twice but shes an oldie. Thank you. I am so much more confident now because of your videos
I just started throwing clay 2 weeks ago. Your videos are my fave snack. I was PARTICULARLY excited to see that you have a 181 because I just got one for $150 and I have no background in ceramics!! You're hilarious and thorough and I'm gonna name my kiln after you hahaha
Yo DJ I'm a newbie like you and just got a 181 this week too. Best wishes on your kiln/ceramics adventures!
@@rebeccamurphykeith7388 Awesome! Thanks 😊
This was helpful! Thanks! I just snagged an old skutt kiln for $150 at an antique store and we're doing the first firing this week to see if it all works. And yes, I've already named my kiln! Her name is Dorothy after my grandmother, who was a stout, sturdy, firey woman!
I’m so glad I found this video!
This is the exact same kiln I messaged you about the other day, you saved me so much time and money with this video!😩
Thank you!
Thank you so much this is exactly what I needed and your funny made this video 10 times more enjoyable
YOU ROCK
Soooo glad you did a vid on this. Awesome sauce!
I just bought a tiny test size kiln (Cress B-911-H). It has the K kiln sitter, and is so old it doesn't even have a timer, just an infinite dial instead of (H-M-L). I watched your video for help since I've never fired before and was really intimidated. I did the 2 hrs low - 2 hrs Med - 4 hrs High. The kiln shut off within ONE MINUTE of the 4 hour timer! That's amazing! Thanks so much! I named my kiln R2D2 because it looks so similar.
I’m so glad you left this comment! I have nearly the exact set up as you and couldn’t find info on the “infinite dial” on my K sitter!
This video was so helpful (and hilarious) I manage a non profit makerspace and had this kiln model donated and this video was super helpful. Thanks so much!
Thank you for making this video! Very helpful. I used to do pottery in college but it has been years since doing so. This was a good video to start out with to refresh my brain. Excited to get my kiln going next summer.
I JUST set up my "new to me" Skutt 181. I tested it this morning, all the elements seem to work. I'm going back out to the "studio" (aka: my parents' farm) again tomorrow to do my first test bisque fire. Wish me luck! And thanks so much for the video. It was REALLY helpful, particularly because the kiln didn't come with a manual (I have a PDF from the Skutt website, but this is much more entertaining). I hope you're having fun with your NEW kiln!
I can’t tell you how helpful this was!!! Thank you x10000!!!
Awesome!
Thanks! I named My kiln “ hole”
That way I can say I put it in the hole!
Or I can say I shoved a lot of pot in my hole😂
Fire in the hole
Very informative, for beginning potters. One thing though. S-Cracks aren't caused by quick firing, at least not soley. They are due to improper compression, of the clay, after opening the clay. This leads to uneven thicknesses, which means the thinner bits dry faster, and pull away from the thicker bits, causing the cracks.
Thank you so much for taking the time to do this video. YOU CRACK ME UP! A little humor is a good thing. I'm looking at possibly buying a kiln just like yours. Now I feel I can use it with confidence.
I named my kiln Val Kilner.
Thanks so much for this and all of your videos. I just bought a used Cress B27. Just waiting for the wiring so I can fire him up. Still working on a name that fits.
Hi, can I ask what kind of wiring do you need for this?
Mine is still new to the family so I'm not sure what her name is.. but I'm confident I'm firing her correctly thanks to your kiln videos. I appreciate you answering the questions some of us are too embarrassed to ask.
Thanks! I inherited a a kiln like this. My students made little pinch pots and you saved the day by showing me how fire them!
Thank you so much! I just got a 181 and have no idea on any of it
This was a funny one. Thoroughly enjoyed this... and I feel like an freaking expert now. I had my first firing with my new (used) kiln today and I went well... I wish I'd seen this video first tho. ANYwho…. I was concerned abut the vapors and fumes but I think I got that under control... we'll see after I fire the glazed stuff tomorrow! Love these videos.. thanks for posting them and keeping them from being brain numbingly boring.
I actually recently bought a Skutt 181 second hand for a great price! His name is Vader. (Mine is slightly shorter without that middle section) I'll be firing him up for the first time tomorrow so this was really really helpful, I'm very nervous and excited!
I have a small kiln and love old skool hip hop, so of course she’s Lil’ Kiln. 🎶
Thanks for this video! I bought a vintage kiln to do projects with my two girls. Now I know how to run it! Also realized we needed to name it, seeing that it is vintage yellow we named it Sunny. :)
An oldie but a goodie
I just got my used kiln named her donna bell.. after the owner that got her brand new in 1971.... love it.. but have no idea how to use her.. this video and many others you have made have been very use full.
Hahahhaha thaaaaaank you! Just found your channel as I'm about to start firing all my own work (no worries, been doing pottery for 10 years) but I laughed SO much throughout your videos AND learned heaps. Thanks!!
Thanks a lot for the very clear and step-by-step explanation. Now that I have time (who doesn't during quarantine???) I will use AGAIN!! my "No Name" kiln. Stay all safe!
Great, I am going to open mine today afternoon and make a video about the firing resolts. Thank you for the video.
Thanks for this great video. It makes the thought of firing up my new (very old) kiln a lot less scary.
I know this is an old video and you probably aren't going to see this comment, but thank you! I bought a kiln just like this cheap, and had no idea how to use it. Her name is Delores.
Thank you this video was so helpful with details and can’t wait to name my kiln!!
Thanks for this. I just landed a free Skutt 231 and wasn’t sure about the venting part of firing. I named her Fifi after my artist grandmother who lived to 100 and this kiln is super old too!
Oh Donte this is awesome as I have this exact kiln! Oh boy everything I needed to see right now.
Love the kiln tips just got one a few weeks ago and have done ine bisque and am gonna do a cone 6 glaze fire next week!
Thank you. This is a great video, very helpful.
that helped heaps just looking at an older kiln with no manual and yes, I name all my equipment :-)
Picking up a new(used) kiln tomorrow! I'm feeling confident to run her now. Gilmo
Def helped thank you:)!!I named mine Ole Bessie cause she's over 40yrs old lol
Loved this , love your humour, & even though I’ve been bisque firing for years, I take forever because I have it on low for SO long (just Incase) never thought about propping the lid open 🙈😝
Thanks for this. I just acquired a free Skutt 1027 with the LT3k controller and your explanation is very helpful. I'm also hoping to just use it for bisque since I have access to a Geil gas kiln for my glaze work.
This video was so helpful! Thank you so much for explaining everything in detail!
I really enjoyed this! Takes the mystery out of kilns for me.
That was sooo helpful, and hilarious. Thanks so much. 😂
I recently bought this kiln for $150! Lol... Yeah, the low low price. It looks ROUGH on the outside but great on the inside. Got it hardwired in and it heats up so I am going to try a bisque load today. Wish me luck!
Thanks for this video! Very entertaining and educational! Feeling confident for my kilny future.
Skutt support has the manual and will send it.
Thank you so much for making this extremely helpful video!
You're fun to watch...it's easy to learn from your videos too!!
Thank you for your wonderful videos My dear husband found a kill them for $25. I am just now doing my first firing nervous as a cat your videos helped ever so much kill name may be Valhalla
OMG i was looking for a relaxing hobby buuuut I think I clicked on the wrong subject. Lol great video though!!!
It's for sure not relaxing until you get good at it. Which for most people takes a few years.
Your like the coolest Potter ever. :-)
I just ordered my NEW Skutt, KS-1027. His name is "THOR!!!"
Wow, well I've been a potter for a very long time and I was researching about a kiln I bought which isn't functioning and I only bought it for a friend a few years ago who actually didn't want it. Ha. Anyway, I never bothered checking it until yesterday and the thing isn't firing and now I am going to see actually if it uses this little bar cone as I have never ever in all my career come across this type of kiln. Very interesting indeed. First check that then I think I may take the kiln sitter apart.... maybe? Thank you.
I named my kiln Methuselah. It's a manual, updraft, natural gas kiln from the '70s. No (mechanical) kiln sitter. It is a new learning experience every time.
love your humor! thanks for all these great videos! “with your dirty little chicken hands” haha I die laughing at your asides!
You're so funny! Thanks for being awesome!!!!
I am french and this was hilarious. XD
Thank you so much for posting all the info. You rock.
This video is SO helpful I just got this old kiln and it's my first time, I see yours plugs into the wall, but I also see a tiny little metal cord going to something on the ground? Can you explain that my kiln doesn't have that
Thank you!!!!
This 1080p quality man!
And great vid - very educational!
Wow! I can see you, and the stuff! New camera is AMAZiballs!
lol, i love you mean youtuber impressions
At school the kilns are named Frida and Diego.
My personal kiln is named Brisingr.
Do you have another video or can someone tell me what difference steps to take for manual glaze firing? I understand I have to glaze to certain cone depending on the glaze. I’m guessing we don’t have to leave an extra vent for evaporation at this second fire, but just want to know if theirs any specifics tips with glaze firing with manual kiln. 🌞newbie to this manual kiln, so excited to learn more!

;)
I know that this video is 2years old but just bought a old skut 181 named it Burnie
I'm a newbie newb and your videos are super helpful! Dumb question? At 15:30, I have the same two knobs on my manual JenKen B-118. I assume they control the elements in the top/bottom of the kiln, respectively? If I only have wares on the bottom, should I use the top knob at all? Not sure if I'm thinking about it correctly.
what would you say is a fair price for a skutt 181 kiln, inside and coils look good, outside top lid ate up a bit but works
you make me laugh.. thanks for the great info... I just got a skutt 145 and I am just learning how to do this. :) peace.
I loved this!
hello i am interested in gettting started in pottery ceramics kiln and glazing
i used to do twhis in high school a long time ago can anyone please give me a step by step process to starting over
what type of clay should i use
step by step making to using a kiln
glazing
not sure how to start
Love your ways.
Thanks so much! great info here, wow
Thx.
Great video!
How do you know how long to keep it on low...or medium or high? I understand that the cone will turn off the kiln when it's coinciding temperature is reached
Is your bottom shelf sitting on posts or is it ok to put it directly on the kiln floor? The previous owner drilled a 3 inch hole for vitrigraph on the floor but I don’t want to buy a new kiln floor slab. I was hoping putting a kiln shelf directly at the bottom would solve the problem!
Great video...thanks! I just inherited an old Skutt 129 electric kiln that needs fixin'. The electronics look similar to the 181. Any resources for how to work on these puppies?
Wonderful video: funny and well explained! :-D Thanks! :-)
If I had a kiln like yours, I'd name it Oscar, and keep a green towel bundled up on top when it's cooled down to let people know it's safe to come near. Because it makes me think of Oscar the Grouch.
OMG! I got this kiln from an old family friend whose sister was a potter and passed away. So I named the kiln Mary Jo, in honor of her. Question: I'm just about to fire this baby up in our basement. Tell me what you do or can say about required ventilation. I'd rather not spend $$ on a fancy vent-a-kiln. Thanks!!
What is the difference in firing to 04 vs 06 for bisque? Also the top of my school Duncan kiln has a bung hole. Does that need to be left open? It has no covering for it.
Is the bar you used for the sitter a mini bar? That's what I have and I don't want my kiln to turn off too soon because the bars is too small.
Thanks for that.
“There’s no pottery or attractive women in the shadow realm”
Oh god! NOT CANADA!
This video is great! I haven’t used my kiln yet cause I was nervous. It’s a Duncan teacher plus. Never used but was sold used. Any tips on that model?
I'm sorry I don't have experience with that model but I have been told that most manual kilns work essentially the same way
Earth Nation Ceramics thanks!
Do you know how often your supposed to vaccum the inside of your kiln? And do you need a respirator for it?
Thank you so so so much!!!
