    All right guys! In this video I go over the new information that was centered around the Jurassic Park Velociraptors and what exactly went down in their pens in the first movie. Within the Dinosaur Protection Group's website, we get information on Frog DNA being a major factor in the Jurassic Park Clean up of 1994. It looks like "The Big One" may not have been so much of a Clever Girl after all! :D

    I felt during the "clever girl " scene, the big one was the raptor Muldoon had his sights on. Ordering her subordinate to come around to get Muldoon, while his attention was on her. Hence the raptor slyly squinting her eyes, showing her intelligence or "working things out" over Muldoon.

      Exactly! The big one is the one Muldoon was hunting because
      The alpha gets the others to kill for her. One killed Muldoon and the other killed Arnold and tried to kill ellie in the shed. The big one is the first into the kitchen while the other feasts on Muldoon and the one that breaks into control room

    It’s also entirely possible that, in my opinion, rather than The Big One having changed its gender from male to female, the other two raptors may have been the males, with The Big One serving as their female alpha; the Velociraptors in Jurassic Park 3 were a pack almost entirely of males, with the female being their alpha (much like packs of spotted hyena). Granted they are generally regarded as a different species of raptor than the likes of The Big One, but it does provide a bit of insight into their hierarchy.

      Sexual dimorphism in birds (which the raptors are closer cousins of than most dino's) can have it both ways, though in predatory birds it tends to be "female are larger". personally i could see it as the Big One being female and the rest male, with females being pack leader.

    1. A hyper violent raptor.
    2. (Nothing special)
    3. A hyper violent spinosaurus.
    4. A.hyper violent I-Rex.
    5. And likely a hyper violent I-Raptor.

      The Lost World often competes with Jurassic World as my 2nd favorite. I think that The Lost World felt really organic when it came to the animal's behavior. The Rex parents had a good reason to hunt down the human threat and was good script writing to increase it's interactions with the humans.
      The Raptors I understood well because as Muldoon said "they remember" as they know that the humans can become threatening possibly wanting to kill or recapture the raptors. So they killed the humans while the raptors had the advantage in the tall grass. They knew they could kill them quickly and then feast on them later so just smart on their part.
      JP3 is my least favorite film. I always criticized the movies Spino for not acting like a real predator spending way more energy relentlessly hunting the humans than it would have gained. Now that it is almost fully confirmed that it was a genetic accident I accept the creature in the canon.
      However this doesn't erase that it was mostly a poorly done film and the fact that the creators probably didn't have this in mind for Spino's origins back in 2001 and I believe it to be a retroactive change.

    • @Dinoman9877
      @Dinoman9877 6 років тому +42

      The tyrannosaurs were responding to the distress calls of their babies. Animal parents in the wild will do crazy things to protect their offspring, especially apex predators. The reactions of the Tyrannosaurs were not uncharacteristic. They probably saw the trailers the baby was in as some rival predator that was trying to eat their baby, hence why they attacked it with such prejudice even after the baby was released. It was an intruder in their territory. I'd argue that the raptors in Jurassic Park 2 are just as overaggressive. They slaughtered multiple people without provocation, and were very persistent in their chase, such as the one digging into the shed.
      Interestingly though, the raptors in Jurassic Park 2 most closely resemble the raptors that were on Nublar. And we know they look significantly different from the ones in Jurassic Park 3 despite being on the same island. My theory is that they bred two strains of raptor for Jurassic Park. The more aggressive population we see in The Lost World is driven into what seems to be some murderous frenzy whenever they see humans, almost as if bred on purpose to be more aggressive, and I'd assume it's from this population that the Big One and her pack came from, because what's more terrifying than bloodthirsty raptors?
      Then the population we see in number 3 seem to be more intelligent. They aren't driven by pointless rage, they just want their eggs. They only killed Eddie as far as I remember, and were content to leave the rest of the group upon hearing the approaching military vehicles and retrieving their eggs rather than exact revenge. It's my theory that this strain wasn't as focused on the 'wow' factor when being developed, but more of Dr. Wu's attempts at feathering, hence the quills on the males. These are, for all intents and purposes, the more 'natural' raptors. They don't necessarily WANT to kill the group, but they'll do so if that means retrieving their eggs. The alpha female may have also wanted to establish dominance, as even she wasn't as zealous as her comrades during the final encounter. She in particular seemed to be more calculating than the rest.
      Now this is all just the wild ramblings of a theorist, but there are noticeable differences in the behaviors of the raptors. Jurassic Park's and The Lost World's raptors are driven almost by instinct entirely to kill whatever humans they see. Jurassic Park 3's raptors were simply doing what they could to save their offspring. I'm of the opinion that the I. rex may actually have DNA from both populations of raptors, and maybe even the four raptors in Jurassic World, giving them the intelligence of the JP3 strain and the ferocity of TLW strain. The Indominus, of course, was tweaked even more to be more aggressive and more intelligent.
      But maybe I'm also insane.

    i always thought that The Big One was female, and the other two were male- maybe because in JP3 the female was shown to be the leader of males. Also, I don't think the eggs Alan found were raptor as he never mentioned that they were, he smiled, and stayed near the nest. You'd think Alan, someone who knows quite a bit about raptors, would get tf outta there. annnnnd he knew the raptor eggs in JP3

    • @ArchEvil666
      @ArchEvil666 6 років тому +15

      Yeah, this is exactly what I thought as well. In JP3 the female definitely seemed to be calling the shots when they were looking for their eggs. If The Big One from the first movie was a male, the behaviour of the first movie's raptors is the exact opposite of the raptors from JP3.
      I agree some of the original raptors have changed sex, though probably not The Big One.
      One interesting theory would be that The Big One killed all of the other raptors except two, because the others were female as well, except those two, who now had turned (or were turning) male. You know, eliminating her opponents. This theory might sound a bit far-fetched because you'd think somebody from the park would notice if their dinosaurs spontaneously changed sex, but since Alan already found eggshells in the park, this process had already been happening right under their noses.

      Bit late, but apparently they are raptor eggs. Or were. Not sure if it's in the script too, I assumed they were galli eggs at first, but I only first found out when I was playing Jurassic World Evolution. Though the games campaign(s) are not exactly canon, the ingen database regarding characters, past events, and locations mostly is. And inside said database, you can find that it clearly says Alan found a nest of raptor eggs.

    If the one underground was "The Big One", then that means he was the one first killed by Rexy, not the one who gave her the scars. Rexy stalked the Big One from the utility shed to the visitors center and came through the same unfinished wall he did. The one who gave Rexy the scars was the second raptor from the kitchen scene, who likely attacked Rexy in anger for killing her mate. Also the Big One couldn't be the one who killed Muldoon since he was underground at the time.
    Also it had to be the Gallimimus and not the Raptors who laid the eggs because the raptors either hadn't escaped their enclosure yet and even if they had, there was no way they had been out long enough to lay eggs, have them germinate and hatch. However the Gallimimus were pretty much left semi wild like most of the safer dinosaurs and easily mated, laid eggs and brooded without drawing human attention. Even if the Raptors had laid eggs, they likely were abandoned, gestated without adults looking after them since they were all dead and hatched after the events of the movie.

    • @TVJUNK85
      @TVJUNK85 6 років тому +7

      The Nerd Beast
      The hatchling footprints had 2 primary toes, though. Gallimimus has 3.
      Velociraptor also has 3, but as we all know, one of them is held up as a sickle claw.
      Also, if the film followed the book in the sex change regard, the raptors had escaped long before the Nublar incident and had started laying eggs without being noticed by anyone due to an error in the counting system for the dinosaurs.

    • @thenerdbeast7375
      @thenerdbeast7375 6 років тому +12

      TVJUNK85 the Velociraptors *in the movie* were kept in the small enclosure, they couldn't have made the nest that Alan Grant and the kids found in the movie. The Raptors, if they had already escaped the enclosure and made a nest right away, would mean their eggs would only be a matter of hours old and no way could have germinated and hatched that fast. Dinosaur eggs don't hatch within a few hours of being laid!
      Some of the footprints do have three toes, all of which are the same length and width so no killer claw.

    • @TVJUNK85
      @TVJUNK85 6 років тому +2

      The Nerd Beast
      No, I'm saying that the raptors had escaped long before the fence security even went down in the Nublar incident; just like how it happened in the books.
      And how would you explain the foot prints with two toes then? If Velociraptor, the 3 prints could easily just be two footprints on top of one another. But Gallimimus does not have only 2.

    • @thenerdbeast7375
      @thenerdbeast7375 6 років тому +6

      TVJUNK85 *in the movies the raptors did not escape before the Nublar incident!* There were only three adult raptors because "The Big One" killed all but two others and the three were kept under such tight security that there was no way that they could have bred without being noticed! Also let's not forget that the raptors did not escape when the power initially went out, they raptor fences were still on when Rexy escaped because Nedry only turned off the main security grid to pull off his heist. The raptor fences, which are on their own grid, only went down after Mr.Arnold reset the system, turning everything off.
      So in the span of a few hours, the, raptors would have to conveniently already be pregnant, lay all their eggs at once (which likely dinosaurs didn't do, spacing laying eggs over many hours if not days like birds), the eggs would have to then germinate and hatch. *ALL IN A FEW FUCKING HOURS*
      YOU HONESTLY ARE TOO STUPID TO FOLLOW LOGIC OR UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BOOK AND MOVIE CONTINUITY SO SHUT THE FUCK UP

    • @TVJUNK85
      @TVJUNK85 6 років тому +2

      The Nerd Beast
      Jesus Christ dude calm down.
      And you're missing my point. I'm saying that it's hinted that the Velociraptors had already escaped long before the Nublar incident even took place. As in, Muldoon was wrong about how many there actually were. After all, the raptors were testing the fences all the time looking for an exit. Did the Big One kill the others, or did they escape?
      That's what happened in the books, and with this new information about the Velociraptors specifically having the sex change (which is Canon to the films by the way) it implies even more that the Raptors we're breeding long before Grant even showed up.

      LJ Soriano no one know if that raptor survived or even where it went after it hatched. To myself if thinking Dinosaurs were more like reptile than birds it would be able to fend for it's self like modern day reptiles on bugs and small lizards and carrion (rotten animals) in the animal kingdom most animals that are smart like the Raptor in JP and are in packs that are constantly on the move the tend to be able to fend for them selves from the moment they are born.but as we seen from Jurassic world even in the restricted area ( other than that 1 raptor on the old JP car on a poster) noughting was there. If only we got the ins and outs of the nublar clear up we would know more than what Clayton said in this video few juvenile raptor carcasses/skeletons were found. Maybe one day lol

    Actually, I still think "the Big One" is female. Her behavior, as I understand, never changed in the backstory or at any point during the main plot. She was always dominant, vicious and highly intelligent for all the time we knew of her. If she switched to male, and this somehow affected her behavior toward her pack and others, then I'd say it happened on Isla Sorna, while still a hatchling. Less is known about that time, particularly for JP dinos who didn't make it through to the sequels.
    The idea that one of the raptors, not necessarily TBO, switched is intriguing, though... We don't know much about the other two; certainly less than their leader. Those eggs could indeed be raptor. Who knows what their natural eggs would've looked like, without InGen interference? Ostrich eggs are rather doubtful.

      Ellie Zatorski the raptors were held in their own paddock until the events that Muldoon described took place. The Big One had the others attacking the fences. That’s why they moved them to the holding pen seen in the film. It is presumed the eggs were laid before the raptors were moved (which is what you’re seeing when Geoffrey is attacked at the very beginning of the first film). So Grant and the kids were walking through what was once the raptor paddock. That’s where the eggs were.

So the Big One might have started out female but according to his theory at one point in time turned male. However, since they are pack hunters like wolves I believe the big one is female. Female wolves are the most cunning and ruthless just like the Big One

      Mike Santillán MX that would actually make sense, males in nature are actually most of the time social if you're not referring to certain solitary male Hunters, females however extremely predatory and aggressive because they have to protect their young and if the Raptors are being referred into Prides like lions, that would mean that the head of the group must have been female. It also would make more sense if the big one was female because most animal species, including birds and reptiles, the female is larger than the males.

    The only reason why the fandom is skeptical of the eggs shown on the island was because they looked different in size, shape, and texture to the raptor eggs shown in the lab where Allan Grant witnessed them being hatched. Also I think seeing hatched raptor eggs in the wild would have triggered a more dreadful response from him. Where instead he seemed intrigued by it.
    Edit: I forgot that they developed the cloned dinosaurs in Ostrich Eggs

      Alan's reaction wasn't that out of mind. He had respect for the raptors (basically loved them). Yes, his first reaction when holding the newborn raptor baby in the lab was kinda dreadful, more accurate to what an adult raptor represents, but in the wilderness, he just found out, that "life will find it's way", and I guess, he realized, that a newborn raptor (despite his previous reaction) doesn't pose such danger. Also in that very moment he could still think, that when they get the island back under control, the staff will take care of all mess, including newborn raptors.

    Hey, Klayton. When you first watched JW in theaters where you hoping to see some wild raptors when Blue and squad were doing the scent drill to find the indo? I had my expectations too high and was a bit disappointed. In the trailer when Barry said “They’re communicating.” they made it seem like there might be native raptors we’d get to see. That would have been awesome and really action packed.

    There is a scene towards the end of the first film, when they all climbed down from the balcony, and the camera pans to the first raptor on the ground, they made it look and sound different, bigger. I always thought that that particular raptor was "the big one".

  • @VitZ9
    @VitZ9 6 років тому +6

    Fantastic video as always Klayton, however I have some observations that were not mentioned in your video! 😊
    1 - The eggs Grant finds:
    I always thought these were raptor eggs. As I'm sure you are well aware, in the original novel, Grant and the kids discover Raptor eggs, after earlier confirming multiple species have been breeding, and witnessing Raptors escape on a boat. As Micheal Crichton helped pen the screen play, I have always thought these were raptor eggs. However, in film continuity I'm not sure the raptors pen had lost power by that point?
    2 - The Big Ones behaviour:
    I had a very different interpretation to its behaviour then it just changed sex. Based again on the original novels main theme of the unpredictability of animal behaviour, especislly prehistoric ones, combined with the different iterations of DNA revisions that each batch of dinosaurs underwent - I always imagined her behaviour was a reflection of the imperfect nature of these recreations. Many species in the wild, lions, monkeys etc, kill other members of the tribe when they take over - particularly the offspring of other males. Thus, I theorised that the Big One sensed or felt that these other raptors, from previous batches, were outsiders in some way to her perception of what the tribe should be, or they came from different "fathers" (if you will) and sensed a threat, so she killed them off. The remaining raptors came from her batch, so she kept them alive. She might even have been Queen, with raptors having a social structure similar to bees? I think Dr. Wu or Dr.Malcolm comments on how we don't understand their social structure, and the animals not having their own elders to guide them is ultimately I think what lead to the chaotic nature of the raptor packs Sarah witnesses in The Lost World novel.
    I would REALLY love to hear your thoughts on this! It's great to be able to discuss Jurassic Park, and I'd really appreciate your input! 😊
    Keep up the great work! 😊

It seems to be a small adaptation. Like how the only difference between the first two were the colouration. If those adaptations could be made in the time between films so could some quills.

      Not necessarily. The Big One is more sadistic having learned traits from the cruelty Man most likely displayed on her when she was born. The humans most likely treated her as they treated the Indomonous. She probably wasn’t even put with her siblings until she grew up a bit and after she learned that she needed to be aggressive. She killed off her siblings and then most likely (through however that change sex know that it is going to happen) kept the two that turned male. She was pack alpha and had her two male that were also strong but weaker than her. But even if she mates and produced eggs the chances that she kept all of them alive would be slim since she didn’t have that mothering instinct.
      Blue on the other hand was raised differently. She grew up with the aggressive gene but also learned traits of mothering. A mother who had those instincts will fight harder and dirtier to keep her loved ones safe. So Blue would most likely win. She won against the Indoraptor.

    Hey, Klayton. I had always assumed the wild baby dinosaurs in the first film to be raptors. This is due to the matching foot prints that Dr. Grant found and the ones Dr. Satler and Muldune found during the scene when you find out the raptors escaped. As far as "the bid ones' " aggressiveness, I thought all the raptors were nasty by default, so that really didn't stand out to me. It's not like the other raptors were gentle or brow beaten to eat humans. I'm honestly surprised that there was a debate in the fan base about what species the baby dinos were when the foot prints matched. Great vid, as always!

  • @DarthPyrusTheVirus

    I don't mind this theory, but if TBO changed sex from female to male, why did nothing else about it change from a physical standpoint? We see the male raptors in The Lost World with a tiger pattern, but TBO still looks exactly the same as the females in Jurassic Park. Could be a case of the filmmakers not thinking ahead, but in-universe, it's odd.
    I always assumed those egg shells were from an earlier time, and the InGen team missed it when moving the other three raptors.

    • @DeHart_outdoors
      @DeHart_outdoors 6 років тому +3

      you would have to have a under standing of sequential hermaphroditism. changing sex does not nessicerily mean changing physical attributes.
      For example, chickens can sometimes undergo natural sex changes. normally, females chickens have just one functional ovary, on their left side. although two sex organs are present during the embryonic stages of all birds, once a chickens female hormones come into effect, it typically develops only the left ovary. The right gonad, which has yet to be defined as an ovary, testes, or both (called an ovotestis), typically remains dormant. Certain medical conditions can cause a chickens left ovary to regress. In absence of a functional left ovary, the dormant right sex organ may begin to grow,if the activated right gonad is an ovotestis or testes. it will begin secreting androgens. (The hen does not completely change into a rooster (male chicken), however. This transition is limited to making the bird phenotypically male.)
      in short the animal still looks female but in a reproductive standpoint is male.
      wu and grant vaugly explain this in the movie, but to truly understand what they talked about in the 60 seconds it was presented you would have to be a biology major.
      as far as jp3 i would assume after years of natural breading on sorna that the the raptors would start to develop different attributes compared to their genetically grown counterparts

      I still don't think the eggs are of raptors. If you watch film when Nedry first shuts off some power, the hunter asks if raptor paddock is affected in which the reply is its safe, the raptors don't and can't escape until John Hammond tells them to restart the mains power, which is when the fences go down quite late into the film.

    • @Croftice1
      @Croftice1 6 років тому

      Raptors were originally in their own paddock somewhere in the park, before being moved into that "holding cell" thingy. The eggs could be from that time. You know, InGen workers didn't go through the park occasionally to look for eggs, especially believing all the dinos are females, there shouldn't be any eggs, so it was clearly easy to overlook. And moving the big one happened just recently, so the eggs could hatch just some time before Grant and co. arrived on the island.

    well we did see that in jp 3 that the raptors that cashed after grant and co were lead by a female and seemed to defer to her. this could indicate that raptors are in fact material, like elephant's and more importantly hyena were the female of the specie are not only bigger and stronger than the males, their far more aggressive and some have being know shown to have sadistic tendencies. such as eating prey items alive. yes the JP raptors are a hybrids of dinosuro and frog dna, and biology works a lot differently with them. so we have to look to the dinosures closet relatives we have today, birds and veryis reptiles. while we don't really see much in complex social behaviour with in retails as more often than not their not social creatures at most you get a male and his harem of females whice may explain the big ones behavoure. though birds have often displayed a lot of different behaviourism's, learning, mourning, bullying, and threat Annalise. fore example with some birds if they see a snake they will surround it and harass it until it leaves. also you have to keep in mind that, just like humans truly intelligent animals can develop or be born with certain neurosis. meaning that an animal as smart as a raptor can become sadistic and cruel. after all killing all but two of its pack mates is not a very smart thing to do for an animal that uses numbers and social skills to hunt far larger pray. no I think 'the big one' was in fact female as that seems to fit with in raptor social structure and is just one mean bitch

    also, she had her size and attitude before being introduced to the pack.
    "the big one. when she came in she took over the pride and killed all but two of the others"
    what does that suggest.
    she arrived at the pack female, and took control as a female.
    the big one is a matriarch.

    Awesome video my brother. I have a question but first I’d like to point out my love for Site B I love Sorna and hope it gets its time to shine in Fallen Kingdom but my question to you is regarding Nublar in the events of The Lost World and Jurassic Park 3. Now obviously there are more dinosaurs on Sorna so obviously it makes sense not only for the plot in both films to go there but more dangerous. Although nublar still had Rexy and a couple other Dinosaurs. What even was going on those islands during those events? It feels forgotten and even more so of a “lost world” at least to me. Thank you. 🙏🏻🦖🏝

    Next video idea: What the different raptor sounds mean. How they communicate with each other etc and which sound means what. Also how does Dr. Alan Grant know which sounds to make to trick the raptors in JP3? Keep up the good work!

      those eggs in lab were ostrich eggs which was mentioned by the tour narration, if you look at the raptor eggs in jp3 and the eggs in the wild in jp they are the same

      Nah bro I think blue would kick ass she obviously smarter than the big one cuz if you remember the whole thing with the raptors in jw was to study their intelligence while the "big one" was going to be a park attraction and um fast forward to the end of jp when the "big one" was killed by the same t-rex that blue helped kick ass of a stronger Rex.

    I have more fun with this channel than any Trek or SW theory discussions. Thanks and keep it up!
    Question: why did the raptors STOP systematically attacking the fences, testing for weaknesses? What did they learn? Could this be tied to the idea that they had escaped their captivity before Nedry’s betrayal and the system collapse?

    • @Croftice1
      @Croftice1 6 років тому

      How do you know, they stopped? Just because we don't see them doing it, doesn't mean, they stopped. I mean once the system was down, they immediately escaped, they had to find out, that the fence is down. A lucky guess? I doubt it.

    It's actually easy to declare the eggs as a raptor because of the footprints as, when they revealed the raptors broke out, they showed the adult footprints.
    And although one could argue that we never saw any other dinosaurs footprints in the movie outside Rexy, the fact they deliberately showed the audience was to pointedly say "look what's out there."

    I thought while watching Jurassic World that the reason there was a restricted area on Isla Nublar was that there were still Raptors that couldn't be found or managed to remain hidden. Also, some of the art related to the Jurassic World had one of the old Ford Explorers tipped upside down and had a raptor perched on top, hinted at more. Personally, I think it would be awesome to have Blue either with a wild raptor pack or potentially hiding from one on the island. But love these videos, and the paired music is even better.

    According to a Jurassic Park wiki, since none of the raptors seen in the original movie have the tiger stripes males are known to have as seen in Lost World, one of the raptors The Big One killed was one of the ones that changed sex to male and started breeding before being killed. That makes sense. Also, there is no evidence that The Big One is larger than the others, she's just the one in charge. We also don't know which one she is, but a lot of people believe she was the one that gave Rexy her scars and killed Jophery in the beginning of the movie.
