    I have this lens in my kit and it is the best overall lens that I have. My camera is the Sony A7R V its an awesome camera with 61 megapixel sensor. I do a lot of flower photography and use the 1.4 x teleconverter and at times use the APS - 35 setting for extreme closeups. I have just purchased the 2x teleconverter to shoot in macro 1:1. I have the Sony 90mm macro lens but will be selling it as the technology with the 70-200mm is much better. Great review. Thanks

    Man! I’ve been waiting to find a review like this and just like you, I love to shoot wildlife & la escape but also portrait and I’ve been trying to decide between the 70-200mm f2.8 GM OSS II or the 85mm GM f1.8 but I think after hearing you talk about the flexibility of it, you’re right - the one f-stop loss is worth the flexibility of having the range out there and not have to carry the extra lens and spend the extra bread.
    I would like to see some comparisons of your shots out there on wilderness adventures between the 85mm prime and the 70-200mm though. Great review! 👏🏽

    The 70-200 F/4 was my favorite lens then I upgraded to the 135GM - such a beautiful lens. But, I really miss the feel and flexibility of the 70-200, it seems this new version might be worth the value of two primes, or a prime and the 100-400GM.

      The Tamron 35-150 f2-2.8 made me give up my 70-200. I took both out yesterday as a last ditch effort to see if I wanted to keep the 70-200, and Honestly didn't find too big of a difference between 150-200mm. But the 35-70mm was a significant difference that greatly favored the 35-150. I put crop mode on a custom button on my camera as well, so I can get a total reach of 228mm with the 35-150 in crop mode. I shoot everything and need a wide range. I keep a 16-28, and the 35-150. If I had the 70-200, I'd also need the 24-70 as well as the wide angle. So thats 3 lenses vs just too. So now I can get something like the 100-400 or 200-600 as my 3rd lens and have a much versatile setup. The main benefit of the 100-400 over the 70-200 +2x TC, is the minimum focusing distance of the 100-400. It doubles as a macro lens! So again, saving on needing to lug more lenses around!

    Hi Kyle, I was interested in your comments re the Sony 100-400mm vs. new mk ii 70-200 GM f2.8 with a 2x converter - extending the reach to 400mm effective f5.6. Can it really hold it's own against the 100-400mm in real world use? For sure it's going to easily outperform that lens up to 200mm. I had heard that the 1.4x was probably about as far as one should go if desiring real quality into edges. What's your view on this lens with either a 1.4x or a 2x? - My main use case with teleconverter would be extracting distant tight landscape vistas and occasional wildlife, mainly when travelling?
    Previously when considering the 100-400 GM I eventually opted to buy Sony's G 200-600mm rather than the 100-400 GM (more reach), but my 200-600 never comes out for casual travel, only for specific sports or wildlife events - typically just 1 day, mainly on account of sheer heft. I now also own the 135mm f1.8 which I love and had used on an a7Riv in crop mode for a sharp quasi 26Mp 203mm. But all that was pre announcement of the refresh to the 70-200 f2.8 which I always thought was too big and not that special vs primes like my 135mm or 90 macro.
    I have now sold all my bodies and currently just have a new a7iv (AF on a7Riv too slow esp with 200-600mm). I may eventually buy an a1, having now also sold my old a9. I also used to have a Sony 70-200 f4 (for travel) but sold it and switched to a Tamron 70-180 f2.8 - which was sharper, but I didn't like feel, build quality, lower reach and no OSS - so recently sold it and placed an order for this new GM 70-200mm mk ii f2.8. I'm hoping to be able to use this as a great general purpose short tele and then also do exactly what you are implying, with a converter (either 1.4 or 2x not yet decided), so would appreciate any insights re using TCs.

    • @KylePugliese
      @KylePugliese  2 роки тому +4

      Hey, here's some samples the best I can do for now to show you quality, currently on the road traveling. There's a slight loss of sharpness and chromatic aberration w/ converter but it's really manageable IMO drive.google.com/drive/folders/1mHs6VMMdPREEJ5X_N3jDMqMjpFPJ5j7E?usp=sharing
      My logic was for a 1.4x I'll just crop so I wanted to go all in and double with the 2x. I'll try and do a video in the future.

    • @wingcreator
      @wingcreator 2 роки тому +2

      Yes, it is still not perfect with v2 - nearly (I heard with 1.4x it is brilliant, but not got mine yet) but 2.0x is not really recommended with v1 (was just ok with 1.4x). At least AF and min focus have not much different when added 2.0TC, image quality is slightly soft for me (maybe I haven't nailed its AF with the 2.0TC, been only using it with the v2 for 2 weeks). With its near 1/3 weight reduction (really important if handheld shooting for a long time, I can single-handedly shoot with it which is not possible with v1). The min focus at 40cm @ 70mm (not possible with v1, only at 97cm which was a new standard at its release within the 70-200mm 2.8 class) is very very handy and it won't change at 140mm when the 2.0TC is on. I think 200mm is 80cm which is 17cm closer than v1. Lastly, for a video shooter, the aperture ring is a god's gift.
