I love how Boy’s obsession with the red dress also represents Joel’s obsession with Aimee. Notice that, only when Joel really lets go of his fascination with Aimee does Boy also appear to save him, likely leaving the dress behind.
Obsession?
So true!
woah, that's a great analysis! I never noticed that parallel
@@kullenberg What’s with the question mark?
I don't think he left it for long
One thing I think you missed was him pausing before shooting the crab. A call back to how he froze in front of the ant during the breach, but now instead of freezing in fear he’s pausing to make the right decision. I absolutely love this movie.
nice catch! I hadn't thought about that, but you're so right!!!!
Good call ! I did not think of that.
This was a surprisingly good movie. I went into it just expecting a okayish monster movie with some ham fisted romance subplot. But no, this was actually really good. So was the movie you have set for next week.
100% agree and same
Ikrr! Not to mention the cinematography, colours, and special effects theyre beautiful. One minor minus is the yacht captain situation is a bit underwhelming but overall it is reallly enjoyable above average
Ya I just went into the movie thinking it would be a fine movie but I was surprised

I love how Joel buried MAV1S. She gave him closure. He never got to say goodbye to his mom or have any kind of proper funeral, so him burying her really gave him that final bit of closure and was so touching. She deserved her wins. Thank you!
Loved this observation! She made such a good impact on him

Dylan is one of them actors who plays himself in every single movie and yet nails every role hes in 100% of the time.
Someone had to say it
I honestly think he doesn’t play himself, he’s just able to bring so much empathy and humanity to each role that it just feels like himself. Kind of like Tom Hanks!

The dogs who played Boy were seriously good actors, holy crap. I know they're just dogs, but I got legitimate feels from them, and I was terrified when the dog was in danger. Best on screen dog ever in my opinion.
In My Opinion Every Dog Is Great
@@hyperspace_a5151 Okay...so, what's your point? One could argue you are objectively false, but regardless, the only thing that saying that does is lessen the accomplishments of these dogs and their trainers. If every dog is great, then none are. Didn't you watch The Incredibles?

Honestly I'm just surprised Dylan O'Brian stuck with acting all the shit he went through on the 3rd Maze Runner movie.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't he say at some point that he considered quitting acting after the accident? Makes him staying an actor all the more surprising but impressive.

The fact that he didn't make her feel pressured about it and instead he blamed the fact that he didn't ask if she wanted him to come to where she was, was refreshing and really fit his character.
it's also the emotionally mature and decent thing to do. great surprise, specially coming from someone who had so much growing to do throughout the movie
Back in the day (just 10 years ago), the girl would’ve been hated by the fandom for rejecting our protagonist. This is progress in writing female characters and our society!
You forgot to point out that the first kiss he gets with the girl when he makes it there is not actually with her, it's with some old man because he's still hallucinating. That part was hilarious.
What do you mean "some old man"?? He's the Train Man, put some respect on his name! 😂🤣

Everything great abt love and monsters:
1. the fact that the downfall of human race ends up being because of our own stupidity is so much realistic
2. *Dylan O'brien*
3. Lovable characters
4. the best boy 🐕
5. no cliches and a satisfying climax
6. Dylan O'Brien again❤️
7. Needed this during this draining pandemic era
Just gonna mention that blowing up an asteroid has been the main way to prevent it's collision to the earth. So in this apocalypse human stupidity is not the reason.
I actually thought that Joel's colony was going to die, due to my knowledge of ants and how they attack. They had 0 hope if they stayed to fight an entire ant colony.
true but ant colonies consist of 10s of thousands of ants. if they got to the size of the ones in this movie then i doubt there would be actual colonies of them, they would probably adapt to hunt more like wolves or other creatures of similar size, there just wouldn't be enough food for them if they stayed in colonies like that.
@@cynicalsassparillagaming6827 knowing ants i guess they would start farming us lol.

I went into this movie expecting nothing. But it was actually so amazing, and honestly heart wrenching. When boy gets his dress, unjust about cried. The character building, was weirdly well done, the action was exciting. And the effects were beautiful. An amazing job all around.

@@tiagoleitao1145 Yeah that's true, but it still is an interesting thought.
@@tiagoleitao1145 Im sure a sequel could reach a fun middle ground. They’re much larger than before, but not so big as to make the scientifically impossible to survive. Like natural evolution, just on fast forward
The opening narration did say that the military managed to kill a vast majority of the larger mutants, so im guessing that large reptiles like Crocodiles, Komodo Dragons and Snakes were all killed pretty quickly. But even so, im guessing those bigger mutants would've eaten other large mutants to survive, not only that Crocs and Alligators are really good and conserving energy and going long periods without food. Some can even go whole years without eating. And snakes have really slow digestion, so could be that some just ate a lot fo the larger mutants and are spending years digesting them before they move again

I remember an early teen-wolf scene and he made me cry just from a mostly-blank face. He is amazing. I love him.
what's really really great here is the fact that that "love" they were trying to emphasized here is not just on a romantic sense. sure it seemed that way at first, but by the end? that love applies to everyone around Joel who had helped him through the journey. actually for me, it never felt like it was meant for romance, and that's so much better. specially when they put aside their wants in favor of doing what's more important things for that time. that's maturity, and that's real life. I also loved how everyone else around Joel were giving him realistic advices and perspective on life, both admiring his will yet still keeping his senses intact. heck, even Mavis did that. haha.

@@mattbrooks6924 star wars....maybe
Josh White I myself always think of LotR (The Hobbit works as well tbh). Star Wars doesn't really have the whole "return to normalcy but it's different now" section, so it's not a perfect example.
@@canid2088 Luke's life does return to 'normalcy' when the Empire is destroyed, but he returns with the 'Elixir' of refound Jedi Knowledge he will use to add to the normal world. it's also said that the return can still allude to future journeys or a future duty, just that the arc of that specific journey is complete and the return is made. using the Hobbits in LoTR you could say the same for basically all of them having future journeys. in the books they face the final Ordeal which arguably is Saruman taking over the Shire and then all 4 return to the 'normal world' of their lives in the Shire, but with the newfound knowledge of the world, objects they earned and such (Frodo's Sting and Mithril, Merry and the Horn of Rohan etc etc) and that tale is complete. however, the adventures of these hobbits nor their Fellowship friends are not fully over.
Frodo - Leaves with the Elves for the Undying Lands and later Sam joins him there
Sam - also leaves on another adventure which is joining Frodo once more
Merry and Pippin - both leave to be with Eomer as he is near dying and later both are buried with honours, Merry in Rohan and Pippin in Gondor
Gimli and Legolas - Journey together for many years and establish a strong bond between the peoples. Gimli founds a new Dwarf Kingdom in the caves behind Helms Deep and Legolas later takes him with him to the Undying Lands, the only Dwarf to ever go.
Bilbo - his future visits to the Elves and leaving with Frodo is his leaving on another journey fittingly described by him for the Heroes Journey of ''im quite ready for another adventure''
its a long block but just to point out the Heroes' Journey does not mean the end of any other journey for the character, new trials and tasks may face them, might only be forced to face them BECAUSE they have faced their past journey and must use that knowledge to help once more. Luke fulfils the HJ and is a poster boy for it alongside the Fellowship members of LoTR ^^
Wildtrexkid huh, that's an interesting way to look at it. In that case, yeah Luke definitely went through the hero's journey.

I finally saw this and it really surprised me. It had a great message and the tone and world building really made it feel like a throwback to an 80's kids movie, in fact that's how I'd sum up this film, a fun throwback to that period. It actually earned the PG-13 rating with the balance of light hearted humor and very emotional and tense moments. Plus the wacky monster designs and the use of practical effects in places was really nice to see for a film made today, sure they still used CGI but where they could have a monster be practical they had it be practical, that's more than can be said for a lot of big studio films. I could've totally seen some of them as stop motion, or Jim Henson puppets or even maybe Stan Winston animatronics if this were made back in the 80's.
This was such a nice take on the topic. Really liked the tone of it.
Pretty suprised I ended up liking this movie as much as I do. Glad to see an Everything Great About it :)
So many lessons in this movie. Really enjoyed it. Just three that stuck out to me were 1) Everything you've been through in life is a lesson that will help you in your future. 2) Live life, don't hide from your fears..live boldy. 3) Don't love the idea of a person, love the people that are down for you
This is such a feel good movie and Dylan’s an amazing actor! Definitely worth watching
I don't know if it was intentional by the writers, but Aimee is similar to (and perhaps derived from) "aimée", meaning "loved one". Kinda felt i had to mention that.
*PLS DO - THE GENTLEMEN BY GUY RITCHIE.*
YES BOSS IVE BEEN COMMENTING THIS ALMOST SINCE IT WAS RELEASED
THIS AND SNATCH
"Alright P-huc Calm the P-huc down.."
Agreed!
I’ve been trying to get his attention for months, that is such an underrated movie. I wish he notices and does it soon, honestly it’s my favourite from 2020.
Joel being honest to with Aimee over the radio was my favourite expectation subversion of the whole film. I absolutely despise the whole "lying to impress" trope in YAF so to see Joel actually be honest with the girl he's interested in made him an instantly likeable protagonist for me.
Did anyone notice the rocket man in the top right corner at 6:12
When you pop that little ant by the win counter it frightened me a little bit
Oh boy the pain in my heart every time the clues that she’s lost love come in
The brilliance of this film is that it's a slick updating of the fairy-tale quest with all of the archetypes
1) It has the young hero who sets off on a quest
2) The hero is often the 'youngest' son or daughter. They are overlooked by the other 'warriors' in the family/village
3) The characters he meets along the way are the classic x3 characters. A companion, the teacher, and the hag/ old woman. These characters 1) test his character to see if he's humble, kind & there fore worthy, 2) teach him how to be a 'champion'/'warrior 3) act as an oracle or guide
4) He receives a gift , a 'magical object' to help him defeat the 'dragon'.
5) He finishes his his quest a changed person, he has grown, but remains humble so he becomes & worthy leader.
6) He saves his people
7) He gets the girl
Classic fairly tale that faithfully follows the structure of the stories to produce a satisfying tale.
Didn't think we'd notice, but we did. 6:04 you sneaking in Yondu and Peter Quill scene at the top. Just magnificent. 🤘
I watched this expecting "so bad it's good" but got "Wow, that was a fun, lighthearted adventure!"
They better make a franchise from this because it has so much potential
Dude thank you so much for bringing this film to my attention! Unfortunately due to living in the UK I had to bend the rules to watch it but as soon as I am able to pay to watch I certainly will because I want to support the team who made this and hopefully a franchise that could spawn from it.
This gave me a much needed pick me up after this last year and I think it would be great if this got a theatrical re-release once everything is back to normal.
Boy is best boi!
I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. One thing I thought was really great about it was the creature effects. Before watching it, I wondered how it was able to score an Oscar nomination for Visual Effects, when the trailer just looked like all CG. Seeing the movie, not only was there a good number of practical effects thrown in, but all the CG monsters had a weight to them you don't see in a lot of movies. You really feel them in the environments and the actors are all so great that you never think they're staring at a Green screen.
Brian Duffield wrote this movie, and he's one of my favorite up-and-coming screenwriters. You should check out Spontanteous, his directorial debut.
Second week of asking for 'Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs'.
I really love that movie. Please do it.
