Maria Keohane is wonderful with Bach. She sings the toughest parts with no shrillness or struggle. She does them effortlessly. I just discovered her and am amazed that she is not better known. Her Bach interpretations are on the par with Kozena, Rial, and a few others who are superb.
Gem after gem, this amazing project unfolds on UA-cam, in support of Cioran's famous argument : 'Bach's music is the only argument proving the creation of the Universe cannot be regarded as a complete failure '. If there was a Nobel prize for spreading beauty, it should go to the Netherlands Bach Society !
I agree with you about the Nobel prize, but I would amend Cioran's argument to read "Bach's music is the best argument..." rather than "the only argument." There are other sources of great beauty -- the visual arts, architecture, poetry -- as well as the awe-inspiring beauty of the Universe. Have you seen the the amazing Deep Field pictures from the Hubble telescope?

Bach! Bravi!
Maria Keohane is superb in her aria; her approach and phrasing following 7:00 is a perfect example of the kind of attention that makes a piece of music more than just notes and into something indescribably exquisite. Charles Daniel's (T) and Matthias Winckhler (B) deliver their respective (and restricted ranges) recitatives very well, but are, alas, given scant opportunity for solo performances in which to elaborate on their talents. Alex Potter's offering was phenomenal; as a countertenor taking the alto part, he gave us a magnificent glimpse of the possibilities of the human voice as pure instrument. The entire ensemble of about 20 dedicated and talented instrumental and vocal musicians, led so adroitly by Maestro Jos van Veldhoven, would have, I truly believe, pleased Herr Bach immensely. Bravo a hundred times over.
0:07 when I first heard that, I was in tears -- I was blubbering. I couldn't help it! I was crying 'cuz it's so sweet! Bach would be proud of all of you guys. I'm sure that somewhere up in heaven, tears were rolling down his cheeks as he listened to this beautiful rendering of one of his most beloved cantatas.
Nothing less, nothing more, just perfect timing and pharesing song by Mrs. Keohane. Keep your silence and enjoy the divine beauty! Kind regards and thanks a lot.
This is one to come back to over and over. I don't know how many times I've listened to it, and I'm still as seduced now as I was the first time I listened ..... Fabulous ensemble, immaculate singers, Christmas any day of the year! Thank You.
A friend told me, how to give Alcohol withdrawal power, and stay safe in the future: Praying Rosaries and listening to Bach music. I m full of gratitude for your videos! A wonderful gift! Thank you, beautiful Maria for your lightful being.
I had the same experience: I went to a concert with Bach cantatas (probably this one? :-) ) and Maria was one of the singers, it was on a Friday evening and I was a bit tired of a long week, but as soon as she started singing, I was awake and refreshed: it was mesmerizing!
What a treasure to have available to the public at no cost. Surely Bach is rejoicing in heaven. One small request: I would love to have captions with the text or even translated subtitles.
If anyone would like to know how difficult the alto aria (11:06) is to sing evenly (everyone already knows how challenging the soprano's is), allow me to let you in on it. It is like ballet. Extraordinary effort and technical mastery required to create the illusion of grace.
The opening aria is marked "Molto Adagio" by Bach and is done correctly in this video. Another video, featuring the same soprano, is not done molto adagio.
note however that in baroque times ''adagio' didn't mean necessarily 'slowly', but stood for 'ad agio' = 'at ease', meaning a tempo that is comfortable for the players
Interesting to hear the bass players doing pizzicato. You hear it a lot in pieces from the Romantic era, but I didn’t know they were doing that in the Baroque period.

Frank Theuns
☺️☺️☺️
Astonishing how seemingly minor differences can transform a performance & recording; the video link below has the same vocalist singing the same piece but with a different orchestra (Concerto Copenhagen "COCO") and yet this NBS rendition is far better IMHO. This is not a criticism of COCO - people playing Bach live today should be universally encouraged - but their flute's juxtaposition with the soprano in terms of dynamics & timbre (and probably mixing too) could learn a little something from this NBS performance which is superlative.
