The worst part about moving to Manager is “manager brain”. Slowly losing the hands on knowledge. I went back to IC and it was uphill battle to relearn certain things. I will probably will pass on manager roles going forward.

It’s a constant struggle for me. That and wanting to help when as a manager your skill sets are needed elsewhere.

@@atylerpearce exactly. You always want to get your hands dirty, but meetings and projects and blah blah. Just no more time to do what you initially got into the biz for.

Have you considered starting up on your own? I know from experience that’s not possible or desirable for everybody depending where you are in life.
If you did it alongside a job you can keep some hands on, but eats further into your spare time which was the first issue raised.

8 hours a day in front of a PC is cancer and fruitless. I work in IT, I hate it.

That’s definitely burnout territory. I hope you can find an area that sparks interest again soon. Having a good mentor or leader is so important. Sometimes a change in career is where it’s at. That’s where I’m headed!

Hey, man. Thanks for watching and commenting. I started 15 years ago. I graduated college with an unrelated major. I just started applying to entry level helpdesk jobs. And learned on my personal experience. I've been building computers since I was 14 and showed them that I was excited to learn. It kinda blew up from there. It might be low pay at first, but IT jobs pay pretty well a few years in. Good luck!
