  • How to make this amazing homemade cordless portable fan that will works with the batteries of your favorite power tools. In my case im using the dewalt dcb090 adapter. This fan normally operate with 6 "D" batteries, which is not convenient when you need to recharge and replace the 6 batteries. Now it's so easier, and if you are like me and have multiple batteries for your tools, you will have almost infinite runtime on your next camping trip, at the beach or on the jobsite!! Bring this diy cordless fan anywhere to fight the summer heat.
    SAFETY WARNING : This project is a concept i made for myself, so i didn't add an Over-discharge Protection to my circuit to avoid over discharge on the battery. You can build one by checking DIY PERKS video here : • How to Make a Battery ... . If you build this fan as is, make sure you always put a fresh battery on it and check the fuel gauge on the battery occasionally and replace it as soon as it falls below 50%.
    You will need to use the o2cool 10" fan : model FD10002A, to make this mod. Im also using the dewalt dcb090 adapter but you can also use the makita ADP05 or ADP06 usb power source, the Milwaukee M18™ Power Source, Bosch GAA18V-24N or any power tool usb adapter. The mounting will be slightly different, but the goal is to have a connector for the battery at the cheapest price possible. I got mine for 11$, check websites like ebay or aliexpress.
    This o2cool fan has 2 speed and operate at 9v so im using a DC-DC step down converter ( Model LM2596 ). This board step down the current from 20v or 12v to 9v. Same thing here, check ebay or aliexpress, check for the best price you can find it at 2$.
    RUNTIME : at 9v (0.7A), the total output is 6.3W. So with the slimpack 2.0AH (40W), runtime is around 6 hours. And with the 5.0AH(100W) battery, runtime is around 16 hours!
    Material :
    Connectors and Conduits diameter is : ½" (12mm)
    (4x) 90° Connector ( Plumbing SCH40 )
    (4x) 45° Connector ( Plumbing SCH40 )
    (2x) "T" connector ( Plumbing SCH40 )
    (3x) 11" conduit ( Electrical SCH40 ) (280mm)
    (6x) 1"½ conduit ( Electrical SCH40 ) (38mm)
    (2x) 2"½ conduit ( Electrical SCH40 ) (64mm)
    (8x) ¼-20x¾" (M6x20mm)
    (8x) ¼-20 Posilock Nuts (M6)
    (8x) ¼ Washers (M6)
    (1x) C-DC Step-Down converter board LM2596
    (1x) o2cool Fan ( Model FN10002A )
    (1x) Yellow Spray Paint : Color im using is Marigold
    (1x) Black Textured Spray Paint
    This project cost me less than $ 50, I already had spray paint i bought for a past project. The fan cost me 22$ and the Dewalt adapter 11$. DC-DC adapter was 2$ and around 15$ for the pvc conduits and connectors. I already had screws, heatshrink tubing and electrical wires under hand. If you have any questions, ask below! 😏

    Nice concept...BE AWARE THIS MOD IS DANGEROUS!!!
    there is no DISCHARGE PROTECTION CIRCUIT...the lack of this can cause PERMANENT DAMAGE to batteries or FIRE!!!

      Thanks for pointing this out, i will add this to my description. I should add one for safety reasons, but because it's a concept i made for myself I make sure I never connect a battery with less than 50% charge and it's good, but yes i recommend adding a over-discharge protection circuit.

    • @engindude25
      @engindude25 4 роки тому +1

      @@SEBTECHDIY If you were going to add the over-discharge protection circuit, what voltage setting do you think would be needed?

      @@engindude25 Those 18 or 20V Dewalt packs are actually made of 5s 18650 cylindrical cells. 3.2V is a recommended cut off voltage for each cell, so 3.2V x 5 = 16V is the recommended low voltage cut off for those packs. You could go down to 3.0V per cell to extract a bit more energy but this will affect its longevity.

    Nice build. I have a few things I don't see: Why was the USB capability was gutted? Why the buck converter wasn't housed in the battery compartment? Since, and why the regular battery capability was removed, as one-way diode or switch could have kept the feature. Other then those great idea and build. What's the run time on a 20V full charge 2AHr?

    • @SEBTECHDIY

      Hi! 😏 Thanks alot for your comment! My first idea was to keep the usb electronic board in the dewalt adapter but i was not sure if i could connect the fan directly to the board, so i removed it completly and this way i had more place to fit the adapter on the cover. And yes i was going to put the DC-DC converter in the "D" batteries compartment but after opening the casing, i decided to make some changes and put it inside the case.
      I have a lot of 20v and 12v batteries, so i won't use "D" batteries anymore in the fan. It's a 10 inch fan, and with a 2.0 pack runtime on high mode, is around 6 hours. Im not sure what i need to stop the power under a certain voltage so i make sure to change my batteries when they have 1 bar left on the fuel gauge so they won't over discharge. I tried to over discharge a 1.3AH pack but even at 12v i can recharge it to 20v. Feel free to give me some advice on this! 👍

      I believe the battery protection can be acquired from the original circuit, but not sure how it maps out to patch into it. There are seemingly ways to build battery a minimum voltage protection, but that is beyond my own personal knowledge. However, if 2.0 can give 6hrs, with a 4 or 5 Ahr battery I don't think there's any much need to worry as long as you don't go beyond 10hrs without checking LOL....

    That’s a really cool build. I just found that same fan on Amazon for less than $20 US. Vs $119 for the DeWalt.
    For your conversion, the weight of the batteries being so high seems like it would be top heavy, and the loss of the D cells would eliminate the weight in the bottom that holds it up. Did you have any weights in the new pipe base? Does it stay up where you place it?
    While you made a killer clone, someone could just leave the stock finish and just add the 20v pack and buck converter and have a nice job fan for 1/4 the cost of the DeWalt.

    • @SEBTECHDIY
      @SEBTECHDIY  3 роки тому

      Hi Jim, Thanks!
      First, you are right with the weight balance. Since you don't have the D cell in the bottom + the added weight to the back, is can cause problems. At first the fan was not shaking to much but it became a problem later, so I found a weird but working solutions, I had a box of 1/4 x 1" bolts and nuts in the shop, so i filled the compartment with them to add some weight to the bottom so this solved the shaking problem. Other than that, the fan is working great but the sliding switch is trash, I had to repair it twice.
      I also own the Dewalt 20V fan, I had to buy it since I kind of made one. The genuine Dewalt push a lot of air, but make more noise. The modded one is really quiet. I've been told that dewalt batteries have a low voltage protection but anyway I always make sure I have a bar left on the battery. With the genuine dewalt, I know I can leave it ON all night on a hot summer night until the battery die and don't worry about the battery.
      Overall, it was a nice project! 😏 Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment! 👊

      @@SEBTECHDIY The dewalt battery pack does not have low voltage protection. It is in the tool and cuts off to not discharge the dewalt battery to low and possibly ruin it

    I'd prefer to fill it directly with olld 18650 but I understand need for use battery from cordless tools.
    Cool look, looks legit as dewalt branded fan !
    How many do you have these dcb090 ?
    I v'e got one from heated jacket with 2xUSB ports. Quite qool :)

      For the adapter, DCB090 is the one you can find everywhere, because in my last project i used a DCB091 which is the one for the heated jacket. So i bought 2x DCB090 on ebay, one for this project and one for a future project! Also, 18650 batteries are very nice, i may be doing a project with theses one day! Thank you very much for your comment! 😏

    • @SEBTECHDIY
      @SEBTECHDIY  7 років тому

      For dewalt im using marigold color from rust oleum. For the makita color, i think the closest would be "Satin Lagoon", search "Rust oleum Lagoon" on google or click this pic : www.homedepot.com/catalog/productImages/1000/1e/1e96ea68-faec-4b3a-8b06-08c707ef47cd_1000.jpg

    I have seen some conceptual diagrams created by the team for DEWALT. I have to admit that your production style is like the style DEWALT very much. So at the beginning I thought it was a cord fan of DEWALT that was converted to cordless by you. You are doing great!
