      How is Henrietta Lacks relevant? She is hardly responsible for the accident of biology that enabled all of this research. The people who should be remembered and praised are the scientists who were behind the experiments and the collection of her cells. Also, there is no question of ethics here. Basic utilitarian principles state that consent of the few doesn't matter if you are helping the majority. In this case, you are comparing the minor interest of a single person to the major interest of the global human population.

    • @Rebeccal450
      @Rebeccal450 7 років тому +63

      The Truthful Channel Have you read the book? Henrietta's cells were taken from her without consent (and the family's lack of information) and they did so to many other people in public hospitals in the 1950s. Even if Henrietta signed a consent form she still may not have fully understood what she was allowing because of her lack of education. They did not know that her cells would continuously grow like they did, so doctors were unaware that they would help the majority through violating her privacy. It is still relevant pertaining to access to healthcare for poorer individuals and the rights that people are entitled to when their biological materials are taken from them.

    • @thetruthfulchannel6348
      @thetruthfulchannel6348 7 років тому +2

      Rebecca Lustig, how was she harmed? In order to have a case, a person needs to have standing. There is no standing without harm. Also, there is no such thing as "the rights that people are entitled to when their biological materials are taken from them." If you believe in inherent rights, you should read Jeremy Bentham's critique of the declaration of independence.

      I was sure she was a tad older than Philippa, but nearly 20 years of age difference... Unbelievable. I guess it's true when they say that african-american women age more slowly. She looks fantastic.

    • @sparklemotion1018
      @sparklemotion1018 7 років тому +1

      +now I'm here Yes, it's true that people whose jobs depend on their looks (including actors and models) take whatever reasonable steps they can afford to ensure that they age more slowly than they otherwise would. In person, in natural light, Renee Elise Goldsberry looks like she's in her mid to very late 30s (anywhere from 36 or 37 to 40 years old). She looks younger than other (non-actor) 46 year olds, but when she appears with the other Schuyler Sisters (Pippa and Jazzy, both in their late 20s) there is zero confusion re: which sister is the eldest.

    My mom: you can't possibly memorize a musica-
    Me: *in one breath* so so so that's what if feels like to match wits with someone at your level, what the hell the catch is? The feeling of freedom, of seeing the light, like Ben Franklin with the key and the kite, you see it, right? The conversation lasted 2 minutes, maybe 3 minutes, everything we said was in total agreement, it's a dream, it's a bit of a dance, a bit of a posture, it's a bit of a stance, he's a bit of flirt but I'mma give him a chance-
