Olympian Dominique Moceanu Models A Fresh Start For American Gymnasts

  • Every four years, the Olympic Games give us a brief glimpse into the world of gymnastics -- strength, determination, and focus all on display. Rarely do we see the sometimes-seamy underside to all those graceful leaps, high-flying flips, and winning smiles.
That changed one year ago, in a Michigan courtroom.
More than 150 current and former athletes ripped back the curtain, documenting decades of sexual abuse by Larry Nassar, the former team doctor for USA Gymnastics and for Michigan State University. Displaying the power and strength normally reserved for their routines, they spoke out not only against Nassar, but against the negligence of the other adults in charge -- the ones who profited from their excellence and were supposed to protect them.
Nassar will spend the rest of his life in prison, but even today, the institutions where he worked continue to unravel. MSU Interim President John Engler resigned last month, driven from office after telling a newspaper reporter that some of the victims in the Nassar case appeared to be "enjoying the spotlight."
Last month, the U.S. Department of Education blasted Michigan State's handling of the Nassar case and other sexual assaults on campus, saying the school may have violated federal laws; and now faces heavy fines.
In December, USA Gymnastics, the sport's governing body, filed for bankruptcy amid lawsuits filed by hundreds of Nassar victims. The entire board resigned and, after multiple hirings and firings, the organization remains leaderless.
In an extended interview, Olympic gold medalist Dominique Moceanu discusses life as a world-class gymnast and the physical and emotional toll she endured -- and eventually helped expose. Moceanu also shares her thoughts on the current state of gymnastics, and how she’s using her experience to make a difference in the lives of local gymnasts.

I think its crazy how great NBC made it all seem when Martha took over after the rough 1997-2000 quad. They always said everyone was on the same page, Martha worked so well with all the individual coaches, the athletes were both happy and hard-working ECT... Growing up reading that book, I definitely knew skating and gymnastics had to be two of the toughest sports! I I assumed some of the book was true and some exaggerated for drama. However, what we know now is much worse than I could have ever imagine! Its incredibly sickening! 😞

What is not mentioned in this video was that in 2007 during the time when Dominique was writing her book "Off Balance," taking her final exams to finish college, and 9 months pregnant with her first child, she also discovered via a certified letter that she had gotten in the mail that year that she also had a long lost biological sister that had been given up for adoption by her parents back in 1985 simply because the child was born without legs. Her biological sister's name is Jen Bricker and she has a really amazing story. When Jen was born in Illinois, Dominique's parents immediately gave her up for adoption because doctors at the hospital advised them that they would be unable to afford Jen's medical bills. Jen was adopted by an amazing family who raised her with one simple rule. Never say the word "Can't." Even though Jen Bricker did not have legs, that did not stop her from loving gymnastics, playing basketball, volleyball, and softball in school. Jen Bricker even won an Illinois state championship in power tumbling all whilst completing against able bodied children with legs. Dominique was originally Jen's idol having watched her compete in the '96 Atlanta Olympics on TV. Then eight years later in 2003 when Jen was much older, her adopted parents shared the adoption papers with her, and revealed to her that Dominique was more then just her idol, she was her biological sister. The adoption was supposed to have been a closed adoption, but the social worker who worked the case failed to redact the names of Jen's biological parents off the copies of the adoption papers that her adoptive parents received. Once Jen Bricker learned this, it would take her four more years to make contact with Dominique via the certified letter she wrote to Dominique, which she included copies of the adoption papers. Dominique had to go back and revise her book "Off Balance" and included a chapter on the lost sister. To learn more about Jen Bricker, search her. There are a lot of videos about her on here. Jen is now grown up and she has gone on to have a successful career as an entertainer, aerialist, and public speaker. She has written her own book titled "Everything Is Possible" which made the New York Times Best Seller list. What Jen doesn't have in legs, she's made up for it by having really big biceps. Jen went to a high school that was built in 1910, had four floors, and no elevators. Jen used to have to climb four flights of stairs to go to classes everyday on her hands and rear end.

I'm so glad you informed everyone about this. It's a major part of her life story that not only is a crucial part of her life's path, but also one for her sister. Despite having grown up apart, they both beat the odds in harrowing conditions. Ironically, even though Dominique had parents, she grew up around an abusive father and the demands of Olympic success. Her sister, however, talks about being so fortunate to have the most loving and adoring parents, even though she had a handicap--one she never felt limited by. There's a video of the two sisters speaking about all of this, and it's worth a watch! They look SO much alike. A DNA test wouldn't have even been necessary to know they're related. lol

Nunovurbznzsodontask it's honestly pathetic that you think her opening up about experience with abuse as an adolescent is a ploy to seek attention and adulation. Maybe, I dunno, it's a way for her to put the grief into words and help others who have or could go through a similar circumstance.
But, let's go with your assumption and think the worst of ppl. Pretty easy to do.

My father took me to Karolyi's gym and I "auditioned" for one of his coaches while my father sat in Bela's office with him and talked. I met Bela, too. I was 15 at the time (1985) and hadn't had much consistent formal training. I could only tumble and do a little vault and beam. So they said I'd never go higher than their Class 1 status, the class just below their elite gymnasts (as in 4,3,2,1,Elite). I was aging out of the sport already. I was disappointed so I declined to continue my gymnastic efforts at that time. I never tumbled again. Now, hearing this, I am glad! I dodged a bullet! I have chronic pain and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, arthritis, Grade IV DJD, need both hips replaced and both knees operated on, and can't imagine how much worse I'd feel now if I had stayed with Bela.

      @1chienandalou 2 роки тому

I’m sorry you have to suffer all that. Also have chronic pain and EDS, never been a gymnast. But I often wonder, now that we know about Ehlers Danlos (a genetic condition for those who may come across this and unfamiliar), I wonder if it was highly correlated with being in sports like gymnastics (or figure skating or ballet …) because flexibility is often an advantage. Put all those years of extreme stress on the body plus EDS, seems a recipe for chronic pain and even mobility issues down the line. 😕 Wish you some relief after your treatments/surgeries.

I’m sure they heard things from the girls or could’ve heard gossip and did nothing just like the other women that these girls went to who were associated with the gymnastic training that just brushed this man’s actions aside.

Monterey Harris the girls didn’t talk about it, no one knew. There’s no way to really know what B&M knew, I honestly believe they didn’t know. No one talked about it, Nassar got away with it with parents IN the same room and they didn’t know. Sad either way...

Larry Nassar had nothing to do with that ranch & he was the worst thing in that sport. You're a fool if you believe the abuse began & ended at Bela & Marta's ranch. Abuse was rampant throughout the sport. Why else would the governing body be in shambles? Get a brain.

@@lhart99 yes, that is exactly what Elinor is saying. You do realize dominque was abused right? 14 years old and a gold medalist? The rules have been SPECIFICALLY changed so that no one under 16 can compete in gymnastics. What 10 or 11 year old has the mental capacity to say "hey, I want to ruin my childhood development so I can have a chance at a medal in a sport people only care about every 4 years"? Dominique lacks a lot of standard mental development that occurs during those pre-pubescent years.

I hope more gymnasts start coming in and say, "We know how we were treated. It wasn't right. We're going to make this different!" And as they become coaches, organizers, and leaders, they create a new code of ethics for people to follow when coaching and training.
I hope other sports start to pick up and say the same. I hope MMA fighters start to say "No more" to weight cuts that have negatively affected their performance and their lives. I hope body builders say, "No more" to mentors and trainers that encourage steroid use.

She competed with an injury at those games. She fought through it helped her team and won a gold medal. She paid a price for success. Good to know she's strong and healing through what she endured. She will likely head up the new governing body. Dominique has so many ideas about running & building up her sport.

I´m so glad that new young gymnasts have the example of life, passion, and knowledge of former and forever great gymnasts. These amazing women are the ones that should be the head of the USA Women´s Team. But I understand that training and preparing young girls with this sensitive and comprehensive teaching is much more important for happier kids. Love watching her son and husband. The timing wasn't right for her voice to be heard back then. Look at what has happened not only with athletes, but religion, Hollywood and several others. It's time for the dominoes to fall now, the energy is better for that to happen. More to come, the dark needs to come to the surface to be cleansed. More women needed to speak up as a group to get action.
Thank you for teaching them the right way - love the yoga, would love meditation also. Not only are the girls away from home and just training, they also have to take care of their minds, emotions and stress of doing it the right way.
