I know freedom of speech is always a sensitive topic so I want to be clear. It's not about 'what' is said but about 'where' it's said. Offense in general shouldn't be where freedom of speech stops, it should stop when people actively seek out someone else’s platform and knowingly hurl mean and hurtful things at them. We didn’t have social media when the first amendment was created. It never planned for this. But it’s kind of akin to standing on someone’s front lawn and yelling insults at their house. I have no problem at all with people saying whatever they want on their own platforms, in their own houses, or in any public venue where I can actively choose not to participate ❤️I'm not petitioning for a change in the constitution here people, only appealing to everyone's better natures in the hope that we can have a little less hate and a little more love online.
    xoxo

Here in Germany the right for free speech ends when you insult or hurt someone with your words AND you will be prosecuted if you do it on purpose ... if you do it on the internet it can become quickly very costly because of the range of influence.
But lets keep it simple ... a law should never be an excuse for being an asshole ... right?

I totally agree with you about freedom of speech and that it comes with Personal responsibility. I used to drive public transit and sometimes people would come up and want to Verbally abuse me, and before I had a chance to respond, they would take off. So I call that VHR (verbal hit and run).

Cinderella most definitely had a muscly build. She was running a household of three grown-ups, cooking for them, cleaning after them, doing their laundry etc. Imagine doing laundry without a washing machine. And in the story, she is the only maid in the house, looking after each one of them.
Doing that much manual labour, without the help of any machines, and it not being evident on ones appearance would be a miracle.

I don't know what you want. If you're looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money... but what I do have are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career---25 years actually. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you." Who doesn't want this movie to happen?

Just recalling - and whether this was fictional detective or not, I honestly don't remember but it makes sense! - an account of a woman, being tried for murder, throttling a bloke with her bare hands. It wasn't believed that she was capable - being a 'mere' female of the species. However, it was pointed out that she worked in a laundry, wringing out wet clothes and sheets! I think that dear Cinders, had she a mind to and in a darker version of the tale, would have been more than capable of breaking those Ugly Sisters in two.

As a fan of the original BSG, of course Starbuck was my favorite character. When I heard that Starbuck was going to be a woman in the new series I was taken aback and a little angry, but of course as a total scifi nerd I still had to watch. Not only did I enjoy the show, but Starbuck remained my favorite character in it. The original character was a little 2 dimensional, but you took that role and brought a full 3 dimensions to it and lets just say it...girl you owned Starbuck.

    • @MSerrada1

I had a similar reaction. Kept thinking, "Sure, remake BSG, just give them new names. Why insist on same names?"

My thing with gender bending is, if you do it, you have to make it worthwhile. Make the character unique. Don't genderbend just because, or to have more female "representation" in the cast. Make it serve the story. That's what they did with Starbuck and that's why people got over their initial dislike and started to embrace and then later love the character.

I liked original Starbuck a lot. He fell in line with the pulse of society at the time. That being said, reboot Starbuck was also pretty great, like most or all of the female roles in BSG...well written characters that could stand alone with fairly robust back stories. You have to give a nod to the guys who rewrote BSG because the original show had like...4 girls in the whole galaxy, but they knocked it out of the park with a lot of the female rewrite characters and then took the extra 100 steps to cast actors who actually fit the script and acted the hell out of those roles (not wooden..cough..Brie Larson). I am not a total simp though, still a bit salty that Boxy was tragically left out of the reboot.

I was honestly a little surprised by the “female Starbuck controversy,” but I was skeptical the show in general would be any good. Eddie Olmos was in it, though, so I was more than willing to give it a shot. Katee’s Starbuck was the unexpected gem in the miniseries, and my skepticism of anything was shot to hell in the first 5 minutes.

The penetration of social media into many (all?) aspects of daily life, and the subsequent disconnect with a sense of personal accountability has created an environment of extremes that's reflected in our sociopolitical discourse.

Hi Katee, thankyou for your comments regarding women in movies, I grew up seeing movies and reading books and thinking that women with strength of personality, will and body are important. I was taught growing up that women must be protected and cherished, but I dislike that you are supposed to be helpless just because you are a female. My mother when she was a girl, apparently beat up some neighborhood boys when they picking on her younger sister. Being made to feel helpless wether male or female is a terrible feeling and shouldn't be inflicted on anyone, not to say that it can't feel good to be the protector. I love the way you think about this, I have have enjoyed your characters in what i have seen. I also think the old saying of if can't say anything nice don't say anything at all. Also keep on keeping on , the world needs the positiveness and openness. Cheers

the person who "remembers a time when actors spent more time on their craft than in the gym" must have a very selective memory... "back in the day", actors had to learn fencing, horseback riding, elocution, and a host of other things in addition to their lines and "how to act" ... it was never just about acting, but the other skills did used to be well hidden from the general public... these days, Errol Flynn would be all over instagram showing off the latest saddle-trick he learned, or talking about how gruelling the fencing practice is... being at a particular level of fitness is a necessary part of the job and most of us couldn't do it. i certainly can't memorize all those lines! that's why i make the props and sets :)

And another way to look at it is that through freedom of speech, we can better identify the assholes from the good ones lol.
Cuz reality is they’re both out there whether we like it or not so while mean people say hurtful things, they do reveal who they are by doing so and i for one would much rather know than not know, just because they aren’t “allowed” to say what they really think. If that makes any sense.:)

When I first heard that they were changing Starbuck and Boomer to women, I was not happy about it. That is until I saw Starbucks at Starbucks, it made me realize that the remake was not to cancel Battlestar, but to tell an updated version of battlestar. I did love the way you and Grace park played Boomer and Starbuck, you two fit the roles, the only thing I did not like about your character was that the show did not fully explain what you were and why like they did with the final five

I always feel like I have to defend myself for running on the balls of my feet, but it's exactly as you said.: Shoe companies built shoes to encourage running from heel to toe, but if you weren't wearing these shoes, you would hurt yourself. Running on the balls of your feet is natural. Plus, the foot is made up of small bones packed with muscle, which helps to distribute and absorb shock. Running on your heel sends all that shock up your legs and make your knees and hips hurt.

Freedom of speech that stops with what someone deems “hurtful” puts terrible limits on speech. If we can’t say something that unwittingly and unintentionally offends ANYONE else , we can’t say ANYTHING because someone is always going to be offended. Offense is taken, it isn’t given. You have the right to say anything you want. It doesn’t mean you can’t face consequences for what is said but you have every right to say it. It could be the most vile and offensive thing and you have the right to say it. If it makes you a social pariah or effects you negatively, that’s the risk you take but you have EVERY right to say it. Go watch George Carlin. The idea that he couldn’t exist in the world of comedy TODAY because of cancel culture these days is beyond atrocious.
This idea you put forward about limiting free speech to keep offensive things out of the discourse is beyond dangerous. Who gets to decide what is offensive? You, Katee? Or is there a board we appear before to get a ruling on our speech? The government?
That is such a dangerous path to start down.

    • @romanaghost

That was eloquent and well reasoned in my opinion. Scotland has just introduced some frightening anti free speech laws which means people can be prosecuted and jailed for things said in their own homes. Incredible but true.

    • @squatch545
      @squatch545 4 роки тому +1

_"Freedom of speech that stops with what someone deems “hurtful” puts terrible limits on speech."_
Depends on what 'hurtful' means. We have laws against defamation, which is hurtful. In Canada, we have laws against hate speech, which means you can't go around publicly calling black people niggers, or saying Muslims are evil and should be shot. Or that native people are all lazy drunk leeches. This is a good thing. A good rule of thumb is, if you wouldn't say something to someone in person, you shouldn't say it behind someone's back in public.
_"If we can’t say something that unwittingly and unintentionally offends ANYONE else , we can’t say ANYTHING because someone is always going to be offended."_
Hyperbole. We can still say 99.99999% of everything we want to say. Freedom of speech doesn't mean you get to be a bigoted asshole.
_"Offense is taken, it isn’t given."_
Nonsense. Most of the time when people say offensive things, they KNOW it's offensive, which is why they say it. It's intentional.
_"You have the right to say anything you want. It doesn’t mean you can’t face consequences for what is said but you have every right to say it"_
Nonsense. If there are 'consequences' to what you say, that means you are being punished for what you say. That's what 'consequences' means. I have the freedom to yell death threats at someone, no one is s stopping me. But there are legal 'consequences' for doing so.
_"Who gets to decide what is offensive?"_
We all do. And chances are, the person saying something offensive already knows it's offensive.
At the same time, if you want to argue that people are often taking offense too easily, I would agree with that. Sometimes people are too sensitive. There's a balance to everything.

@@squatch545 Where in the first amendment does it specifically state that you don’t have a right to be a bigoted asshole? You most certainly do have that right. Now, don’t confuse or conflate that statement to mean I support being a bigoted asshole. I’m a 37 year old black man and if you want to call me a nigger, you have the right to do so. By right, I mean you won’t be arrested and sequestered away for saying it. You might be fired from your job, you might be ostracized by your friends, you might become a social pariah, but you have the right to be a bigoted asshole in that you can’t be prosecuted for saying the word nigger.
Words, not actions and not incitement of violence, but WORDS are not illegal. You are speaking more to the social contract we have with each other rather than the actual Bill of Rights. You can call me a nigger and, as long as you aren’t beating or robbing me or committing a crime, you have done nothing illegal. Now; if you start throwing around that word while committing a crime against me, THAT is where we get into hate crime territory. But simply walking by and calling me nigger is perfectly legal. Doesn’t mean you won’t get a bloody nose, though. It just means you won’t be arrested.
And yes, the culture these days is so quick to take offense that it almost negates the point. If comedians like Pryor and Carlin and Robin Williams couldn’t survive in the cancel culture madness of today, those being some of the most influential voices for a generation, then we’ve gone too far down the road of over-correction. Pryor spoke to and influenced a lot of black men, myself included.
