I tested the pH of my raised bed to see if I could grow blueberries there. (I used an inexpensive home test kit.) The soil was slightly alkaline; I decided to buy blueberries at the store instead of trying to nurse along a bush in a place it didn't like. I also had my soil tested for lead years ago--it was free through Indiana/Purdue University.

great info .....I've always thought I should do a soil test(because some other people say to) but never could figure out which spots would be important to test, and actually why I would really need to test plus what I would or even could do with that data - so I'm still doing just fine without testing

That narrator is a pleasure to listen to and Pavlis' wrtiting style is easy to comprehend. Very nice

I just finished your book, great job. It is scientific based which I like. I heavily compost my garden and have my soil tested every three years. I do not use fertiliser. The last time it was tested the calcium level was high, which surprised me. I do not know what caused a spike in calcium.

Can you do a video on magnetism and plant growth? Charles Dowding mentioned it in a comment that this is 'lost knowledge' and that neodymium magnets improve growth!

      Mystical mumbo-jumbo.

@@Gardenfundamentals1 Institutions have financed research into trying to learn about the relationship between magnetism and plant growth. There may or may not be a relationship - I don't know what the current opinion is in the physics community. But mumbo-jumbo it is not. Here's a short video from the 1990's on the research being done at the time at Florida State University on magnetism and plant growth: ua-cam.com/video/k1y8X4XoP4c/v-deo.html

I just bought the Kindle version of your book. I’ve read the first chapter and am looking forward to getting through the whole thing.

It’s easier for us as our plot is unaltered ground- thin soil on glacial till. I already know it needs LOTS of compost. As it’s a geologically mixed up area,. I used a hot tub test strip to check our well ph, which should approximate that of the soil. That’s all the testing we did.

Well I just had a soil test done, my ornamental gardens are always struggling so I wanted to see if there was something wrong with my soil. I do know the original house on this property burned down approximately 75 years ago and a new one was built in close proximity to the first house, I’m currently gardening around the corner stones of the previous house. In all likelihood because this is a farming community they buried what was left of the house. I find random things when I’m digging in the soil so I was basically trying to find out if because of that my soil was somehow “ bad” by having too much of something. I also found out my soil had only 4.3 percent in compost so while I will work on boosting the compost level, at my age I don’t think that I will make much of a difference. I know I could bring truck loads of compost in to help the soil but frankly that’s not in the budget. 🌷💚🙃

At around the 9:26 mark, the narrator talks about how the soil test (for manure, compost) can give values that are inflated, because the test gives total nutrients in the sample, not the nutrients that is available to plants in the soil. For this reason, I wish this video also discussed the saturated paste method, which takes all this into account, giving measurements of nutrients that the plant "sees" in the soil.

My soil is excessively full of compost. Usually moist. Getting air into it is a problem. Texas coast here. Okra, cucumbers, tomatoes and peppers grow fine... corn? No. I don't fertilize. Peas and beans are easy.

Soil testing is in practical terms, just a waste of money. Don't do it.

Soil testing saves money past a certain scale. Sure if you're a hobby backyard gardener, don't worry about it. If you are a serious horticulturalist the information is priceless.
