+UGN.PRODUCTIONS Yep, I def would like to see some new features like the chords, and such, but I'm glad to not have a bunch of technical issues, that's what I was most worried about. It definitely is great for the workflow, especially the way I tend to use it. They did a good job, hopefully they stay committed to it.

Great demo, as always, saintjoe!! I've been looking on adding another controller to my rig and this was definitely a front-runner until I noticed all the issues logged at the Akai Forum on their website...playing multis is a great sell but not if the interface doesn't support expansion packs (Omnisphere 2 / Zebra 2) not if it doesn't support some of the recent upgrades to Arturia's V Collection and not if it is a major headache to multi-track the multis...right now, even though I use Ableton 9, I'm leaning towards Maschine, since I'm doing things more linear and less clip oriented these days...thanks!!
I hear ya fam, definitely depends on what products you wish to use with it.
I might get it, after Akai work out the few kinks with the plugin maping, but all in all, cool video Joe.
+bairahrecordings Thanks for watching. Mapping seems to work pretty well from what I can see, of course it's up to Akai to create the maps unless you want to do them yourself, so you're dependent on what they chose to map. They have a lot covered so far though.

Why would you not want to use your mouse and PC monitor? Seems a bit counter-intuitive to go back to using a tiny screen and dials to navigate like that?
People have things setup differently, some don't want a screen in front of them on stage, or across their studio , etc.

Are you liking the keybed now? I think it's fine. And I also have the Novation. The Novation keys are a little short, and the Akai keys are shorter yet. Both make it awkward in the top 1" of the keys, especially the black notes. No such issue with longer keys on the NI boards, or on Roland and Kurzweil synths/workstations.
What up man good demo. It seems like this is better than the Komplete kontrol keyboards but idk akai software doesn't seem as polished as NI. Which of these two keyboards do you prefer

Question St. Joe..Are the mpcx and advance compatible? Is VIP and 2.0 integrated? Can I use them like mk2 and 3? And btw, the 3.0 vip update, gives me that chord function. Dang Akai...aggressive!
No direct integration that I'm aware of currently, I could be wrong as I no longer have the Akai keyboard but I haven't heard of any direct integration yet.

Thanks for watching! It has been a while since I tried this and I'm not an FL user so I can't say for sure if it maps or not.
Instead of searching for sounds with the keyboard screen, can you program your sounds for a specific song into the pads so you press the pad and the sound loads?
I'm not sure about that specific function, you may have to contact Akai directly for that answer.

The parameter names are taken from the plug-ins. Some of them have easily understandable names, others don't. Arturia's V Collection has lots of parameters which are named in a way that they're completely cryptic. Akai should do something about this.. this is a showstopper for a kbd claiming total control over your plug-ins..

Research complete. Nektar Panorama 4, is the only other player in the game, and their window allows you to operate the entire daw, on the keyboard. But, it only works with a handful of daws, like Reason, Nuendo, Cubase, Logic.(might be worth it to add another daw lol).and a few others. And..it looks DOPE! The layer function on this device (Akai) is a game changer though, and overall, is more versatile. Add a one touch chord feature for the keys challenged, and it's checkmate. If they did it right, they could deal themselves into N I.'s giant fan base.
Hell, I may get both, but for me right now, the advance 61 is it. But it's been out 3 years..man, I wanna know what's next!

the keyboard is great hell look at tge Mpc300 and asr10 there still being used to make hits the advance is light years ahead of them u can make ur own custom sounds with this

I can see having to push the knob to select a sound while auditioning a lot of patches would really be an inconvenience. The 3 updates I'd like to see are 1. Not having to press that knob while auditioning sounds. 2. Better DAW transport control and pre mapping. 3. Chord & Scale Mode via the keys. I was hoping you would show how it integrates with Maschine software...If it is pre mapped to parameters and if Maschine's stock sounds (and even expansions) scan into the VIP browser. The good thing is, I did see Maschine as an option while you were scrolling through...so I'm assuming it will scan the stock sounds.
+cutta J I agree with all of your requests! As for Maschine, it doesn't scan that stuff into it well, I didn't try it, but what I've been doing is using the VIP software with Push and/or Maschine. That way I can just browse for the VIP software from the controllers, and then browse all of my sounds from the keyboard, really great workflow man. The Maschine you saw was my plugin list, when I tried it with Maschine 2 it didn't install anything and I didn't see any plugin map for Maschine stuff specifically.
+SoundsAndGear.com Thanks for the feedback. When you said you then browse all of your sounds from the keyboard did you mean that includes Maschine stock sounds? I've had my eye on the Advance and the Kontrol S for quite a while. It seems like both can do a couple things the other can't, and once one finally adds the couple features the other's has one will have all angles covered. Has Komplete Kontrol gotten the 3rd party compatibility update they announced a while ago yet? …still would need a screen though. Waiting on the future! lol hopefully 1 of them can put it all together soon.
+cutta J I mean't all of my plugins. If I'm using Maschine I just browse Maschine stuff from there. If I'm in Live, I still use Maschine for it's sounds as I use it as a plugin routed like an external drum machine lol. But all the plugin stuff comes from VIP, or at least it can, and that's pretty cool. Until NI do a new keyboard they won't be on the same level as the Akai, because they lack the screen to actually allow browsing directly from the controller. Unless they split it up into the smaller screens, which would still be not quite as good. Akai basically did what I felt NI should have done for the most part.

Really liking the keyboard, but im a bit disappointed that the VIP software only scans Nexus Factory content and not the other XP's
+MOTABEATZ That's a lot of expansions though lol, they have to go in and make the maps for each one, as someone that's done a similar thing for Maschine I can tell you it's pretty time consuming. It would be cool if they did it though, make sure you suggest it to them, they take suggestions for plugins to map.

+Elite Beats - | Hip Hop Instrumentals | Rap Beats one thing to remember about crossgrades is they are tied to your Maschine license. That means if you ever decide to sell Maschine/license you have to sell the crossgrade too. Just something to keep in mind.
I didn't think so. There is a guy on you tube that uses them together somehow, but I think, he uses the mpc as a plug in..too bad you don't still have it, would love to have seen them used together. Probably on the way? It certainly should be. Why would they integrate with everyone else, except themselves?
Yeah you can use VIP in the MPC as a plugin, I just don't think it's the same as Maschine and Komplete Kontrol currently.
Can you also review drum pads? I've been looking for a review with someone using the pads lol. I love your videos btw, every time I'm about to get a new plugin, I watch the review on your channel first.
+Justin Jay Beats Not sure what you mean? They are part of the controller but there's not much to "review" on them other than if they feel nice or not. I'm usually not a fan of drum pads on a keyboard but these do feel nice. I still don't use them though, but I wouldn't be mad if they were all I had lol.

+Justin Jay Beats I feel you, the pads on the akai are just midi drum pads, they don't have features like an mpc or maschine in terms of all the chopping, sampling, etc. But if you're just looking for drum pads to trigger your favorite sampler plugin they may be fine.
I'll def go with the maschine based on that. I do enjoy chopping with a mouse in pro tools but I'm hoping that a drum machine can speed up my chopping process.

just bought the advance 61 and i had a problem installing the vip 3 software it kept sayin no mountable files in system i contact akai they send me a link to see if that one works it did let me download it but when i open it crashes right away running mac os x 10.9.5
Not sure, I used it n windows, I'd make sure they get it working for you or send it back.
Always Check for your vids Joe, have you reviewed the Kontrol keyboard, and if so which do you feel has the edge.
+NastyBoiBeats Thanks for watching! I haven't done a review on it, just a video on how it works with Maschine. Depending on your setup, will determine which has the edge. If you're more into controlling all types of plugins, layering, splits, etc, then I'd say Akai. If you're mainly working with Maschine (soon it will work with third party plugins) then the NI joint is a nice choice. Also I've found the daw transport to work better with the NI than the Akai. But personally for my use I like the Akai just because of the layering and the fact that it also works easily with external MIDI gear.
Man I'm having issues please help. So I have studio one 3, komplete kontrol 49 and maschine studio hooked up. I can drag komplete kontrol and record midi with no issues. When I do the same with maschine I get nothing. Tried the midi settings in maschine and still doesn't work? When I play kontrol I get midi on it and maschine . Wth???
+Byrdman c I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "get nothing" but this isn't really related to this video. For Maschine to send midi you need to either put it in Midi mode or setup the groups to send midi to the host. Hit me up via email to through my site if you have more questions fam.
have u noticed that when trying to layeer certain ni komplete vst it wont layer or it crashes like alicia keys trying to layer with vaccum didn't work
+UGN.PRODUCTIONS I don't have Alicia's Keys installed but I've layered stuff from Komplete with AIR, Arturia, etc.

just bought a mpk 261 and 3 keys are not playing . Is there anything I can do electronically to get them working or send it back for another one?
What software are you using it with? Do you have it enabled as a midi input device? Did you install the driver software?
Excellent demo; thanks for the clear and practical explanation. I use NI Complete, some G-Force, Rob Papen, and Korg Legacy. And the multis looked so simple! Does the player choose split & layering for each plug-in, as you can in Live? Was sorry to hear about all the issues with Live. : ( I also use Max AND Max for Live. I've used the MPK49 some 7 years at rehearsals and gigs. Faulty keybeds on the two I've had. Keys were partially blocked under the wheels. The Advance is a contender against the Nectar Panorama P6 for me, but no arp on Nectar. (Trying to use the old Map 1 arpeggiator by MAM). But no faders on Advance-and 8 pads and not 12-16. Maybe you have an opinion about the advantages of either Nectar or the new Akai. Anyone else have suggestions?
They don't automatically split but you can do it quickly, they do automatically layer.
I think I'll go with NI Komplete Kontrol. I trust Ni's stability verses Akai;s reputation. My controller will sit directly in from of my monitor, allowing me to not focus on the actually keyboard controller for browsing. I new Ni was coming!
+Russplight I still think they missed the mark, there's no way they should have come out with a keyboard without a browser given their Maschine/Traktor heritage. Maybe an Mk2 will make them what they really should have been from the beginning. Now as far as the keybed, I dig em, and if I'm using Maschine it's dope to be able to go prev/next through patches. But I browse from Maschine more than KK. It's not bad if it's right in front of your computer but still, they could have done way better imo. Not to mention no way to layer, split, or setup setlists.
+SoundsAndGear.com Yeah I agree with NI missing the mark. I think layering, split and set-list will come within the next major update. Those features currently gives Akai the upper hand in the race. But, there is nothing more valuable when creating music then stability with all your pieces in your recording setup. I value that much more these days.
+Russplight I haven't had any stability issues with either, so then it comes down to workflow, and right Akai is winning there. I don't even have to interact with their software on the computer, I can do it all from the hardware. But really, I don't even use a lot of plugins so I'm just speaking from the idea aspect LOL. They also seem to work with more plugins out of the gate, where NI will require developers to code for their new platform. Both are cool, Akai has the edge, I think once NI comes with an mk2 it will be a different story. Come on man, it's NI, no browsing on the hardware? I just can't overlook that lol. I still use my KK though, keybed feels good and works for what I need, basic MIDI control.

Joe how is it stability wise now? Do the DAW templates work now? Any major issues? Am on the verge of pulling the trigger on one...
I don't know about any current updates, I sent it back after review so I can't speak on that.

I don't know, I haven't used the MPK personally, and I don't know what you're looking for in a controller.
Does it have normal piano sounds too? Like a traditional piano?
It's a MIDI controller, ti doesn't have sounds of its own. It will play whatever plugin sounds you load in your software.
To get the keyboard to work with daw try and see if they have a template and I know ableton if u add a new controller u have to install template in the ableton folder. Then in preferences u have to activate it.
Hope that helps with the daw issue. Really enjoy ur videos u do a great job man!

Advance 61 setting (transport keys play stop record loop) how do u you use those buttons?
I no longer have this, but I believe there are templates for different daws or you can map them manually in your host.
I am considering buying this Akai advanced 61, does VIP software have synth plug ins or is it simple a software that organizes it all? Basically I'm asking if I could plug it in with VIP and play without having to buy other software.
The keyboard comes with some plugins but VIP is not an actual instrument itself. It's the library/host for the other plugins that it comes with as well as any you already own.
Awesome thank you for the info. I just got my advance in and was very happy with it! Musicians friend had a special deal going on and it came with a separate VST package that came with a bunch of programs from Arturia for example (Analog synth lab). I also just bought omnisphere 2 for it, I'm super excited about the potential from this controller.

Is your Akai connected directly to your PC and vst ? Or are you able to load your vst directly inside the akai. VIP seems so confusing to me lol I ve read that it is a vst host so does it means that I can load the Korg polysix vst in the Akai without the PC for live use ? Seems a no brainer to me if that is the case. Thank you.
It's a software controller, it's connected via usb to my computer, all of the software is running on the computer. You can't run the software without a computer.

Can the sounds come out of the keyboard itself? Or does it go through the computer or speakers?
This is just a MIDI controller, so all sounds are coming from the computer and have to run on the computer. No audio output on the keyboard.
My advance 49 won't sync to vip software. I installed everything correctly. Can anyone help with that?

+Courtez Presberry what expansion and what do you mean by "all the plugins". It definitely doesn't work with every single plugin on the market, but from what I've seen a lot of the more popular ones, and even some free ones work fine. They also seem to be adding more. As for expansion, not sure, guess it depends on if it is a supported plugin or not. I expected a lot of issues and didn't really have any in terms of using it.

Great review. I would have liked to have seen step sequencer as with this as in their MPD 232, but what can you do? They are very generous with their included software. This is a toss up between the M-Audio Code 25 and the Akai Advanced 25. Thanks for posting :)

+TRaddcliff The pads "feel" better than the Maschine pads, but I didn't use them enough for drums to compare the response, but they did feel good.
Much better pads and knobs on the Akai, plus color screen, built in layering, perfect integration with VIP (3.11 currently). Slightly better keyboard playability on the Novation, sliders, both infinite encoders and knobs, tons of buttons, scribble strips for CCs. Terrible pads. Trade-offs!

i just bought an advanced 61 key and the software is VIP 3.1...i was able to download software and get VST'S, my problem is, when I try to push and open browser on keyboard it keep saying launch software.

As a basic MIDI controller, as long as you have a way to hook it up to your iOS device. The browser,etc, will not work, it's only for plugins.
Hey. My Akai Advance 61 doesn't have preset for Studio One. Do you maybe know how to get it? I watched some tutorials but none of them was thorough. Thanks in Advance ;)

the MPK261 is their best MIDI keyboard to date...this is crap.
It has drum pads though? No faders I agree, but again, just depends on what you're looking for. This is more for those that want to use their plugins in a different way I guess.
@@SoundsAndGear I would LOVE the layout of the 261, with the tech of the advance. The pads aren't exciting..but, now they do chord progressions. But that layering..outweighs faders to me. Advance is a go.
I actually was wondering this also because basically all it does is work better with akai advance which is free with mpc studio mpc touch mpc live mpc x mpc renn. Etc.

+Bashanvibe Yes it will work with a mac, not sure what you mean by link, but you can use any controller with your software, the vip software can be played by other controllers as well. Not sure about midi learn, haven't tried it.

I copied the *.vip files from "pluginmap" to my User Map folder (i have that customized, isn't standard) and it works flawlessly!
But i have noticed that there aren't all Komplete 10 Ultimate plugins, is missing some Pianos, Scarbee e-piano and basses.
+Manu80 I haven't messed with it in a while so I'm not sure what all is missing, but I know they had quite a bit. If it's something from previous komplete versions it may not be there, only the stuff that is in 10 I believe.

+Simon Gentry Yeah you have to click it, though I'm not sure but thought they did something in the latest update where you can quickly scroll through and have it auto load. Don't quote me on that, but there was something updated LOL. I no longer have it.

+Simon Gentry Man I totally agree, requested it as well. Make it more similar to a workstation keyboard, just flipping through sounds. But I think the issue is probably with so many different plugins, some being sample based, it wouldn't always be instant when scrolling.

Like it, but also like the mpk249. I like the pad lay out on the 249, like the screen on this. Which do you prefer?
I personally haven't used the MPK249, and my main controller is the NI Komplete S61 mk2
@@SoundsAndGear Question; I've got a couple of Roland synth modules. Can I run those mods through my MK2? Or...can I use my FA 08 as a midi controller..or, should I get a controller like this? Nektar has one that appears similar, but it's not clear which DAWs it supports.
As long as a device has MIDI you can use it to trigger the modules. I use my KK MK2 to play my XV3080, the thing with the NI boards is the MIDI output only works when you unplug the USB, while the USB is connected, the MIDI out ports don't work. FA 08 can also be used as a MIDI keyboard if you wish.

Just a follow up: I got it for testing now and the software is not working as advertised. Didn't find mappings for half of my stuff and the ones it did find weren't properly indexed (no presets) - so all i had was random 4 bank mappings. It also ignored some newer instruments from Arturia collection (year old bug). The ARP also only worked sometimes and it crashed Ableton when i started my Push controller. Endless pool of frustration right there. Returned the thing and bought me a Push 2. Will ignore VIP from now on. NI Kontrol was more useful than this. Phew. Gotta love money-back.
Thanks for the follow up man! I didn't have those issues when I tested it, but I found not a lot of the DAW templates working and as you say some of the mapping was a little random. The NI ended up winning out for me in the end as a Maschine user.

The keys on the Advance are good. The keys on the NI KK Mk2 are better: longer, better balanced, smoother feel. However, the depth of travel is shallower. If someone mainly plays white keys and has smaller hands, the Akai keys respond well. (As I've mentioned elsewhere, it's the top 1/2"-3/4" of the keys that have extra resistance -- especially the black keys. So, if you are playing in Flat keys toward the top, the keys don't feel balanced (this seems to be a common problem for all semi-weighted keyboards); less of a problem when the keys are longer. So, the problem is less on the NI, and worse on the Akai.
Regarding Knobs: The Akai knobs are glorious, smooth, responsive, dreamy. However, they are way larger than necessary, and on the S61 too far spread out (not such a problem on the 49). If you like to hold sounds with your right hand while manipulating knobs with your left hand, it's really awkward. Also, it's hard to see peripherally exactly which knob you're going for. I found I often reached one knob off from what I thought I was grabbing. If you want to see your info, you're looking left (to the keyboard screen) and reaching right. It's like they designed the keyboards to look impressive, but didn't think of actual usage. Meanwhile, the NI KK Mk2 knobs are fine; good enough. Comparatively, the sweet spot would be sized and spaced between the 2 keyboards. But with the KK Mk2, the knobs are right in front of you, reachable with either hand (or both), and the labels are right on top. I find this approach to be much more intuitive and preferable.

I'm just getting my feet wet in production so, question: does this keyboard have any of its own sounds or is this only to use with third party plugins?
It is a midi keyboard, it works with software. It does come with some plugins from air music and sonivox I believe, and also works with other software.
