Yes this can definitely happen. This is where you’ll see a blended malt whisky that’s very old (30+ years for example). It’s blended with a similar age that brings up the average ABV to 40 or above to qualify as whisky. Never waste whisky.
What is the cost of SMWS? Their website is a little confusing to me. Do I get a bottle for free when I’m a member? Or do I have to buy the bottles as they release them? How often do I get a bottle?
There is a yearly membership fee ($99 first year, $70 after that). Once you're a member, you can purchase bottles whenever you want to. They have new releases every month. Some times i feel that i create this placebo effect in my head that i love whiskey, even though, in reality some days i am not really up for drinking a glass of it. Which makes me think, do i really like whiskey that much and am i just forcing my self to like it. It might be because i have not tried a lot of whiskeys before (only Glenfiddich 12, Jura 10 and Jim Beam), maybe because i like the history of the bottle and distiller more than the experience of drinking it or because i usually drink alone and not with company. This is a serious question for this community because I am a little concerned for myself and for others. How do you guys maintain the distance and know for a fact when you are merely being a whisky aficionado/fan and keep away from then becoming or transitioning into an alcoholic or using your interest in whisky as a crux? I'm not at risk of this, but this concern has prevented me from purchasing any new bottles because alcoholism runs in my family...

Probably 3-4th use on the oak and aging without a huge temp shift. That's why it's so light at the age.
