I'm pretty sure the reason they're shifting things more to the center of the car is so that they can mass produce cars for multiple geographical regions where it matters which side of the car the steering wheel goes on. This way they can just make all the same cars with all the buttons and stuff in the middle and all they have to decide is where to put the steering wheel as opposed to having all the buttons on the left for the American cars and then having to have another production line with all the buttons on the right for places like England. I'm pretty sure that's at least one reason why they would do this

The reason for this (to my understanding) is that it is often easier to access the controls when they are all in one place, with the added bonus of being more visually pleasing because of both sides of the dashboard looking more symmetrical. This combined with the fact that car manufacturers can now stuff a lot of controls into the iPad that they superglued to the dash (it's in basically every modern car now, and I hate it), they can put the few remaining buttons in easy to reach places, which are typically the center console and the steering wheel itself.

James, the reason cars have everything pushed to the middle is so they have a low, central center of gravity (centroid).
Essentially, this improves the handling of the car and can, depending on the car maker, improve handling, acceleration, etc.
Then again, I have no confirmation or source. I am but a mere engineering student

At 9:45 they ask about why everything is moving to the middle in cars . Well I know In supercars having more of a center of gravity keeps the car planted the engine in the car is heavy so keeping it in the middle or closer to the middle lets the car reduce its body roll. Also since a lot of supercars are all wheel drive center weight can give a car a 50% split from the front to the back letting all the wheels get the most grip possible.
