Great use of inks and washes. Never thought about use them as "base coat". Also the base of the mini is outstanding. Thank you!
I love using inks and washes and finding more excuses to use them. There's just something about tinting a surface that's satisfying ya know?
I had to collect my teeth from the floor. Impressive work!
Appreciate the compliment! This guy was a lot of fun so I'm glad you like him!
I’ve watched all of your videos and while they’re all impressive, I was blown away by this one! Great example of continually improving and refining your techniques! I loved it man, keep em coming!
Thanks man! I had a particularly fun time painting this one and am extremely happy with how he turned out :D
insta-subscribed! Thanks for this run down!! Imma try this tonight, hope it helps me get through my painting slump.
Fun video! Great job on the fish'e eyes!
those fish eyes look amazing !
Awesome!
Please more Rising Sun !! :)
More is on the way! Komainu is next then the River Dragon!
@@BandaInku Ah I just painted Komainu! It was pretty much just gold with dry brushing and red eyes... did you do an abstract take on him?
Goddamn, dude.
Wow man, just wow. I've watched this one in particular about 5 times already. It's just top notch. Absolutely gorgeous. Will you ever do more of the small core box figures? I'm curious to see your take on some of the daymios and shintos.
Yeah I will. Actually getting close to finishing the video for the Dragonfly Bushi (sword version). Hopefully will get that out soon!
Wow, your videos are really good but this one was...just awesome. That fish is beautiful, bird was perfect and I really liked the skin tone.
I don’t have that expansion, I didn’t really want it, believed that dude was a bit boring but this changed everything...
Glad to hear that this may have changed your mind!
Other than this fish is my favourite thing what you've ever done here (which is a huge compliment) I really like the editorial work of your videos as well. I like how you show the paints and everything is so smooth.
Some questions:
Do you wear a mask when you use the airbrush? Do you use it where you live or you paint in a garage/studio etc? I don't have an airbrush but I'm on the edge of buying one. My concern is I live in a quite small flat and I paint in the living room. What do you think?
Absolutely loved painting Ebisu. Yeah I wear a mask when airbrushing to avoid killing too many brain cells. I just do it up in my room inside the house over a table. I used to use it with a spray booth (one of those Master Airbrush ones) but after using my airbrush for a while I developed much better control of where I sprayed the paint and didn't feel as much of a need to use the spray booth all the time.
The main issue I'd see with doing it in your living room is less to do with you and more to do with others around as well. Everyone would need to be wearing masks haha
wow... just wow... you are the Michelangelo of miniatures
This comment made my day :D
Hi, I love this videos, I´m plannig to paint my rising sun minis but I don´t know how to keep them save for use and transport, how do you do those things ? Thanks for bringing me some inspiration.
I just keep them in the plastic they come in and they stay in good shape. Especially if you varnish them (gloss first for highest protection then either satin or matte to get the final finish/look you want) then they'll stay protected. Glad the videos have inspired you!
Amazing. I have this dude and hope he turns out half as good.
Question. Could you not have achieved the same effect on the robe with airbrush? Were you just trying something new? I didn't have volume so couldn't hear the narrative but great to watch nonetheless.
Thanks! Yeah I could have done the robes with an airbrush but I was trying to just use a brush on this one. I try to switch off between airbrush usage and brush only to keep things fresh and keep improving both skills 😄
@@BandaInku thanks. Just so I understand, were you just highlighting the robes in a specific (and to me, an new) way or were you trying to create a pattern with the green robes? Looks cool.
And were the greens wet when you blended them Or dry? Hard to really get a grip of this technique on the video but it's great. Looking forward to the next one. Maybe the dude on the turtle!?
Sorry for the late reply - As far as the highlights go, it was more trying to show a different way of doing highlights to help it seem less daunting. I was also trying to show how you can do some simple highlighting first to get a feel of where highlights should be and how they'd look before fully committing to blending and all that.
For the greens it was basically:
- Livery Green Highlight placement - Let that dry
- Jade Green + Livery Green midtone - Applied and two brush blended on (and some wet blending in some cases with the straight livery green)
- Jade Green - Two brush blend for shadows
Hopefully that answers your question :D
What do you do when using multiple layers of washes to not have it look like you shoved jelly into all the cracks??
Hahaha never thought about it that way. That's a great visualization. It's all about not applying the washes too heavily, but instead building the layers up gradually till you get the effect you want.
do you lick your brush when you 2 brush blend?
I do not. I just rinse it in water and wipe off the excess water on a paper towel so the brush is clean and damp.
Whatever you do don't use army painter white primer. It will destroy all the details on your mini. I just want to cry
OK fixed it.
99% Isopropyl alcohol & a toothbrush.
15 minutes later : throw army painter primer to the garbage.
Start over with vallejo airbrush primer.
Glad you fixed it! I actually used sandable automotive primer. Haven't tried the white Vallejo primer yet. Love the black and grey ones though!
@@BandaInku I used grey primer then I base coated using army painter paint Matt White. It created a zenithal highlight in the process. I can't say I see the difference but it looks ok so far. BTW I'm at 23:33 ( starting the cloak ) and so far my mini looks pretty much like yours. Thank you so much for this video, it helped me a bunch!
