Underwater Walrus in the Arctic

Welcome to the world of the Walrus. They are found across the Arctic and in the summer time colonies of them lounge on rocky beaches. They are extremely social animals so you'll see packs of them together in the water feeding, playing or just chilling in the shallows to take the weight off. They can grow over 3000lbs so they can be quite large! Both males and females have tusks but you may spot a few calves in the video footage who haven't grown tusks yet. This underwater video was very special for me to shoot. It was a dream to just see walrus but be able to capture some behaviors and unique footage of them underwater in the Arctic.
As large as walrus are they can be sensitive to boats and people in their environment. They are very curious and love to investigate new things but also can spook easily even without doing anything. They get each other amped up and will swim away as a pack or show a lot of interest as they snort, fart and grunt on the surface and underwater. You can hear the audio of them in a lot of the underwater footage I shot.

I'm glad they look big to you, THEY WERE! They were huge! I didn't think it came across in the footage with no humans for scale.
