My parents moved down from Crag Vale to open an antique shop in Hebden, mother ran the shop and dad had a workshop around the corner for the restoration work, they were Stan and Vera McCarthy. My wayward brother was a local artist and set up Haworth Arts, but this was years ago. When they retired they moved up to Heptonstall where my dad was a local historian and illustrator, some of his stuff is or rather was, available on the McCarthy Arts site, but a lot of his stuff is still around, sadly he died in 2017 aged 93, but my niece and I still have all his artwork and writings. Sadly during their failing years a lot of there stuff was spirited away, but their memory lives on and my niece still lives in Hebden Bridge
Love the vlog. I was born in Hebden Bridge, living at a place called Buttress Brink at the bottom of the cobblestone road up to Heptonstall. My mother was one of the people who worked making trousers at Dunkley's Mill. Love how the place has turned out, i have many memories growing up there and now live in Grange over Sands and New Zealand
I'm a Lancastrian living just over the border and a 20 mins drive to Hebden Bridge. We go there quite often as it's a favourite place for any visitors I have staying with me. We're never disappointed and certainly do better with the weather than you did!! Never come home empty-handed either as there's always something you feel you must buy from one of the wonderful artisan shops. Love the very bones of the place. Thank you for a very informative video. On your next visit the shortish walk along the canal towards Todmorden for lunch at the Stubbing Wharf is highly recommended. This pub was washed out during the floods a few years ago uniquely situated as it is between the higher level canal above and the river below. It was out of commission for well over a year and has been restored to a high spec. Good parking too. Looking forward to your next video.
Hi thanks for the tip, I will certainly add that to my 'must visit' list when back in the area 😃 thanks for watching and pleased you enjoyed the video x
A well written and delivered guide to a town near which I live (I'm in Keighley) but about which I knew shamefully little before this - I must get myself over there for a proper wander about instead of just using it to park the car and head for the nearby hills!
Thank you so much, your kind words really mean a lot! Glad you found it useful, I hope you get to enjoy Hebden Bridge on your next visit. Thanks for watching 😀
What a great video, I'm a massive fan of Happy Valley, my husband is a Yorkshire man, we live down south so he married a Londoner which is me, we are staying in beautiful Hebden Bridge in October, cant wait, i love Yorkshire its just beautiful with lovely people. Thank you for sharing x
It still has its cinema, which nearby Todmorden does not. I used to be a relief projectionist at another council owned cinema, the 68 seat David Lean Cinema in Croydon. Hebden Bridge is also said to be the most lesbian friendly town in Britain. You mentioned the closure of the old industries and the cheap property prices which attracted the artists, hippies etc. But Hebden Bridge has a darker side to its past. From 1939 to about 1970 Cape processed asbestos at Acre Mill on the hill above the town, and for many years after the mill closed the area was a hotspot for asbestos related disease. A sad time in the history of what is now such a nice town. Soon after Acre Mill closed two television programmes were made about it and the people who worked there, ‘The Dust at Acre Mill’ and ‘Alice - Fight for Life’. Both are on UA-cam.
Hi, this is really interesting - thank you so much for watching my video and sharing your input It's certainly an area with a lot of history, I'd not heard about the asbestos - that is very sad 😥
Hebden Bridge is wonderful place to visit, for Happy Valley fans .. we operate two short term lets that back on to Cleveland Place the location of outside scenes at the rear of "Catherine's home" mentioned in the video.
Great video but I was surprised that there was no mention of the Rochdale Canal which played a part both in building the industry in the 18th and 19th centuries and since it's restoration the popularity with tourists, the majority of whom arrive by train to avoid parking issues.
Hi Geoff thank you for watching and for letting me know about the Rochdale Canal - I'll have to look at the history on that, it sounds very interesting
For me it’s the little independent shops and the very friendly people, plus the fact that most shops are dog friendly too, that make it very special, only 20 minutes from where I live, we go there and to Haworth often, proper Yorkshire ❤
I was a Happy Valley fan and the show has inspired me to visit this beautiful area. Do you know when a good time of year to visit would be? Not too cold or hot and not too rainy ?
Hiya, well this is England so the weather is unpredictable, we went in summer and I was really hoping it would be nice....we still enjoyed it though despite the rain.....I'd say perhaps go for September 🤔
Great video and pleased that you visited and enjoyed our town. Just a slight correction the Town Hall is actually community-owned and is a fantastic place for exhibitions, events, food and local businesses. The community raised £3.7m to refurbish the old Town Hall and build a new extension. Hope you get better weather next time you come
Haha yes I've heard some stories about the darker side of Hebden 😬 to be fair so many towns in England have been ruined by drugs, it's really sad to see

Thank you for watching the video, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I hope you have a lovely time on your trip, there's certainly plenty to do xx
What a superb production and presentation. Hebden looked great in the Pennine rain, but do come back on a sunny day, it then becomes sublime.
Thank you so much, yes I'd love to come back in the sun, maybe one day 🙏😃
Thanks for this. It's on my bucket list if I'm ever able to get to the UK again. .. Getting old.
Thanks for watching! Hope you do manage to visit the UK and Hebden Bridge 🙏
