- As the 10th overall pick of the 2008 draft, it seemed as if Cody Hodgson was destined to have a long and successful career in the NHL, but thanks to a number of injuries and a rare neurological disorder, the Canadian forward was forced to hang up his skates and retire from the sport only 8 years after his selection!
Given the number of injuries he faced and the fact that he had completely fallen off the hockey map by his late-20s, I figured it would be worth delving deeper into his rollercoaster of a career and seeing how it all went down. So in today's video, join me as we explore the unfortunate career of Cody Hodgson!

I felt he got a raw deal in Van but I believe his parents acerbated the situation a little making the Nucks get their back up and get rid of him and them (parents).
that was the idea yeah. but horvat wasnt good until a year ago. but Cody never had the same talant. i mean i grew up in YVR so I and watched him play a lot. he was always.... meh... sad he has the condition but $15mil makes it easier

Life long bs fan still i hate to see such a well spoken young man go thru all this B.S., they say a lil adversity builds character but to be misdiagnosis by the team witch doctors, then ridiculed by the coach.. Just looking at him I can tell he never apologised to the kid...LOOK I'm no snowflake but that boy needed positive reinforcement, attached to a good recovery program.. I had a sergeant in the Army 🇺🇸 who pulled that attitude with me after a SOFREP mission..I came close to ......well anyway its not cool...

I remember watching him play for my hometown in junior. Wish things could have worked out better for him. He’s one of the nicest people
These are the comments I love to see. Regardless of how things ended up he was an incredible hockey player and he's respected out here in Boston.
Hodgson is a Battalion legend on and off ice. It was great to have him here for a few years.

Yeah I remember watching him play against Sudbury. He really dominated. Was a great heads up player, really controlled the neutral zone and was able to quarterback the play really well

I remember when he was traded for Kassian. I was just getting out of school and my parents picked me up. My dad said he was traded and i thought he was lying. Got home and saw the footage of him saying goodbye to the team in Arizona.
When it happened, I said to everyone "looks like we traded CoHo for some Sockeye."

I felt bad for Cody when he was a Canuck. I felt the coach didn't give him a fair shot. Then again the coach didn't really like playing rookies much. Still find it funny that both Hodgson and Ehroff are both still on the Sabres payroll.
He made his millions, and ontop of getting paid by the Sabres nearly 800k usd per year till 2023 for doing nothing ... I say he's doing alright.

Should have mentioned the 2009 World Juniors . Hodgson was an important part of Team Canada
Used to play with Cody in my triple A hockey days for the Canadians. He was such a solid clutch player. Unfortunate to see his NHL career go down. His dad was a bit of a nut case too.

Love these videos. I completely forgot about him.
I suppose it's easy to be disappointed in his hockey career but if you think on it, from a personal perspective, he did very well with the physical problems he faced. He's made a lot of money, he doesn't appear to be wallowing in self pity and he's still involved in the game, helping young players hone their skills and developing character skills that could be a great asset in the future. That's a great value in of itself.
It's not how successful one appears to be, in life, but what one does with what life has dealt him. I've seen stories that were a lot sadder, where top flight athletes just urinated their lives, fortunes and careers away. Cody doesn't seem to have done that and to me, considering his challenges, makes him a success at life.

The Canucks traded him too soon and could have got more value, had they waited until the 2012 NHL Draft, instead of the trade deadline, like what if he was in the lineup against the L.A. Kings, would have he been a difference maker in that series, we will never know.
yeah especially with Daniel Sedin being out for most of that series, the secondary scoring from Hodgson could've helped a lot. Something to wonder about for sure

Epic Slapper. The only real time, Tim Thomas got beat by a Canucks shot.
That was in the following season rematch during the regular season. Not a playoff goal and not in 2011.

Hodgson was a hero of mine when I was younger after watching him at the juniors was literally wondering about him the other day
Cody fought hard to get back into the league due to his back injury. This was his motivation to work harder and be better. His injury / disease unfortunately coincided with the typical pattern of a player getting a big payday then dropping off after he gets his paycheck

I remember when the Sabres got him, the talk of Buffalo was that Darcy Rieger fleeced Vancouver. He had talent and good promise. The idea of training with Gary Roberts was also a big deal here. Amazing he lead the team with 44 pts. I ALMOST forgot how terrible those tank teams were. Ugh. I think he had good hockey sense with good hands, but was slow, insanely soft, and sadly injury prone thanks to his genetics. I remember him as a pretty even keeled guy, no emotions shown. At least he made bank.

I'll never forget watching him at 16 when he played with Peitrangelo for the Junior Canadiens in Toronto. He was absolutely filthy. Scored a short handed goal (5 on 3 no less) where he dangled 4/5 players on the ice and potted it top shelf over the blocker. I was mouth agape for a full minute.
ya i understand injuries n his health held him back to be able to play a a high level..but he still made it to the big league..but glad hes still involved with hockey..there r so many jobs available in an nhl organization..but hope hes ok as well.. a persons health really plays a big part in whether u can play..some take chances..but glad he chosse to retire...good video ODD MAN RUSH

Honestly, Hodgson is a name I remember hearing (probably from his career high year) but haven't since. Good on him for teaching and passing on his knowledge of the sport though, thays always commendable

@@jasonsmith5226 yeah barely. I don't think he played much in the playoffs that year though due to how young he was and how deep the Canucks line-up was that year.

Unfortunate for Cody Hodgson
Canucks fan here, I don't feel sorry for him, he and his father whined incessantly to whoever in the Vancouver media would listen about his ice time. The whole misdiagnosis thing got massively overblown and his father kept stirring it up trying to get Gillis and AV to give him preferential treatment. This on a team that had the Sedin twins and Ryan Kesler as the top two centers in their primes. I wasn't surprised when I heard he was traded, what surprised me was who he was traded for, as Kassian at the time had a very poor reputation and was Virtanen-lite. Sad that he had a genetic disorder that ended his career but if I had a dollar for every highly touted prospect that burned brightly at the started and fizzled out soon after, I'd be rich.
Was always a huge Hodgson fan and I really believe he was never the same after his injury. I thought he would have been up to the caliber of Bo Horvat. There is no reason why he wouldn't have been. I always believed in him no matter how much hate he got. I spent a lot of time defending him and telling off naysayers but ultimately I was wrong.

In a regard of the thing with the genetic disorder, I think that something similar happened to Jiri Hudler who was forced to retire from pro-hockey within just two years or so of being a leader and MVP of his team (Flames), a trophy winner and a top 10 NHL scorer.
He did not take it lightly, mentally crumbled and ended up in drugs. :-(

His 1st injury that was misdiagnosed wrecked his career. He lost key years of development. I was a fan of Hodgson and thought it was shameful the way the Canucks coach and GM handled him.

What happened to Kristian Huselius?
Signed with Columbus for 4 years in 08', he tore his pectoral halfway through the 2010-11 season and missed the rest of the year, they botched the recovery process, he played 2 games in the 2011-12 season before worsening his injury and also pulled his groin, and missed the whole season.
He wasn't resigned and became an "injury prone" free agent north of 30 in a lockout season and he retired shortly after the lockout ended
Edits: Adding more information, you got me curious too. I live in the East but I grew up in Calgary, Huselius was one of my favorite players at the time, completely forgot about him, thanks for the trip down memory lane

Fun facts: Dude's pupils are dilated in every photo. Also, his dad was a member of a political party that pretty much tore apart the social safety network in Ontario. I don't wish anyone ill will and I'm glad he's set for life, but every time I saw him play my instinctual reaction was, "ugh." That said, he was a very good player. Not superstar - gifted, but gifted if ya know what I'm sayin.' Thanks for another interesting video.

A little slow afoot, but he was a great stickhandler and had one of the best pair of hands in the game during the time he played with the Sabres, similar to what Tim Connolly was like during his years with Buffalo. Unfortunately, as with Connolly, Cody just couldn't stay healthy.

Finically he's not hurting because he's still getting paid by the Buffalo Sabres Organization thanks to the buyout. He just lost interest in the game because of the injuries and being moved around so many times.
12-13: 34pts in 48 games. 44 points and 20 goals in 13-14, age 26. 2 years later, out of the league. He averaged a career 43PPG.
His last season he even got 11 points in 14 AHL games last pro season.
