Our Story:
We are Carissa, Iwan & Frankie the sausage dog, and in 2020 decided one night over a bottle of wine that moving from North Wales to Portugal would be a good idea. Within a month we were on the road to Portugal to find the perfect piece of land to call home. We picked up Albi, Joao and Simao the cats along the way, as well as Diogo the podengo and a flock of chickens.
Subscribe to follow our project as we turn an old stone barn into our home, and learn the ropes of looking after a piece of land to make an abundant garden and one day, our very own winery.

So relieved you have not been affected by these horrendous fires, my heart goes out to those who lost family, livestock, homes and businesses and yes a big thank you to bombeiros and all the firefighters including villagers who fought those fires with any means they could as bombeiros could not physically be everywhere at the height of the fires 🥺 and also thank you to the countries who sent in help and aid ❤

I’ve worried about and prayed for your safety, after hearing of the wildfires in Portugal. So relieved to hear you guys are OK! Here in Canada,our climate is changing rapidly, and huge wildfires have become the norm every summer. I live in the northern part of my province, and it gets hotter and drier every year, with more electrical storms and dry lightning. Perfect conditions for a wildfire. ❤️

Love the feeling of peace that you manage to create in your videos. There’s a constant feeling of calm through out your presentations. It must be quite alarming watching smoke rising into the sky and knowing just how fast fire can move. Thankfully not near enough for you to need to take action but to hear the aircraft constantly must be un nerving. The new cabin is coming along nicely. ❤
I love the art for the book! I also like the title "Frankie and her socks" much better than "Sausage and her socks", I think it not only sounds better but helps create instant familiarity, even with people who haven't heard of Frankie yet.
You mentioned the Canadaire water bomber, a new factory east of Calgary Alberta is in the process of beginning to build new water bombers the same as existing well known fire fighting bombers. But it will be a few years before the first leave the assembly line.

Thank you, your videos are always so lovely, it is easy to forget that such devastating wildfires can erupt in the dry season, threatening homes and villages. Praying for rain to come and turn the land soft and green again.🙏
Using the saw to take the pallets apart really saves a lot of the wood. The sander is one of those things that only lasts so long, mine all fell apart at the bottom after a few years.👍❤️

We get that golden haze in Aotearoa New Zealand when the fires in Australia are really bad and a westerly brings the smoke haze here.

When we have fires around us in the bush and close to town the sky is a brilliant pink/red/purple like colours and with the sun behind it, it is spectacular to see but the fires are not good for the people effected.
Your deck is going to be great. Amazed what can be done with pellets. Used here for camping out firewood mostly.

Carissa, if you have a small orbital sander, you may find that it is easier to use in the small spots and save the belt sander for the long runs with the grain. All looks lovely oiled up.

Thankfully you are not in the fire zone this year.. it’s very unsettling as you say. (We have the same issues here in Oz , and this summer is forecast to be bad)

The square sander is a finish sander, the circular and mouse sanders are better at removing rough wood. The belt sander is your best bet, except for wood without nails a power planer is the best. Again a pleasant channel😊🇨🇦👍👍

Much respect for the fire crews in Portugal. Palet house is looking good. You need to make a cart out of a palet and some bicycle wheels, that lil wheelbarrow can only do so much, it needs a vacation.

As an older person who gardened mostly on my knees for many years, I now regret not looking after both my knees and back as they both now give me lots of pain and discomfort. I can no longer kneel down at all, the pain is too great. Therefore, I plead with you two to do more to look after yourselves. I know you’re both young, strong and fit but I was, once, too. Build a workbench so you’re not always working at ground level and use kneeling pads when you have to, your older bodies will thank you. Having said that, I love your channel and always wish you the best.
Glad you’re ok but do you have an evacuation plan in case you need to run quickly out of your property? Without forgetting all animals? All the best 🥰

Look at the end of the board (cupping) trees are round, they have rings, it is called crown side up to have the cupping on the bottom, water won't be sitting on the wood in a puddle.

One way to save snapping off screws is to pre drill with a regular drill bit, one or two sizes smaller than the screw so the screw goes in way more easily.

I love your happy pets...such personalities and they have the freedom to roam about which is increasingly rare, in the states anyway. I tried to find the lovely song that you played at the (almost) end with lyrics, but couldn't. Do you mind sharing? I love watching the progress you're making on the new cabin, how great for you to have more space this winter. And Carissa, you've brought the gardens along nicely in spite of the dryness and poor soil you had to start with. Well done!
I would advise thinking about a sprinkler system on your wood cabin roof, then you can soak it should a fire threaten in your area.

Hello be careful the ants Will eat the walls foam insulation and nets protect it some way...and the roof ends foam its bernd with the sun you can paint it to prevent thats what i did with mine ❤

I have been thinking about all you you tubers as my other half is in Chaves at the moment and so obviously with high fire risk couldn't ride his bike till the rains came. So sorry for the fireman who died. Great video as always, stay safe x
I'm coming to you from Napa Valley, California the land of wild fires. The golden light is definitely the fires, sadly you can learn to see the palest pink in the light to rich sepia, the light can becomes like an old film. Wildfires can travel the distance of a football field in 3 seconds so be safe. The vines can get smoke damage too.

I did try that, unfortunately gravity was also encouraging the whole pallet to fall over and holding a fast moving saw with the non-catching hand felt dangerous 😂

It would be better to prop up deck on cement blocks to avoid the wood underneath rotting. You can dig them in level.
