  • The Australian Army Tank Museum at Puckapunyal, Victoria holds a collection of armored vehicles of interest to the School of Armour which trains personnel at this operational military base.
This footage was shot on Sunday 30-Oct-2022 and is of the M24 Light Tank (Chaffee). This tank was deployed in Europe with US & Commonwealth forces from November 1944, and was equipped with the 75mm M6 39 Calibre dual purpose main gun. It was designed to replace M3 & M5 Light (Stuart) tanks employed by allied forces. It represented a step forward is US tank design by utilising a stabilised 75mm gun, welded construction of the hull, and torsion bar suspension.
In addition to the main gun it has two .30cal Browning MGs fitted in the hull and coaxially in the turret, and provision for a .50cal M2 Browning on a mount behind the driver.
The Australian Army trialed this tank in Bougainville against the Matilda II that had been employed against Japanese forces in South East Asia throughout the war. Below is a link to a video showing these trials and the extreme mud and foliage that armored vehicles has to deal with in this theater.
