This special project was the result of a contest initiated by Executive Director Shandra Carter. She offered seed money for projects proposed by any staffer at TJJD for innovative projects that could enhance rehabilitation for youth or increase efficiencies.
This was part of a contest to make TJJD "unrecognizably" improved. There were three winners, each got $1,000 to begin their program. Treatment Program Manager Richard Williamson, at Gainesville State School, proposed this one. He thought that youthful offenders in residence would benefit from a class that offered both training in construction skills and a way to give back to the community.
