- Many of you feel you have watched the horror of Israel's onslaught against Palestinians in Gaza and felt fury and grief - but helplessness. You may have participated in large demos, tweeted about it, peacefully occupied a train station, yelled at your computer screens and TVs, or offloaded on to friends and family - but ultimately felt "there's nothing more to do to stop this genocidal war!"
Well there is. I interviewed Omar Barghouti - he's a Palestinian human rights defender, winner of the 2017 Gandhi Peace Award, and co-founder of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement bdsmovement.net/. He explains how this peaceful, Palestinian-led mass global movement can help bring this horror to an end - and finally bring about freedom, justice, equality and dignity.

They did, but what can be done about the murder rate? It was less than 200 murders a year on average under apartheid but is over 25,000 a year now.

Part of me wants to go to Palestine to help in some way, my safety be damed. Because I feel I am partly to blame for being so complacent of what crimes my government has committed my whole life, and the criminals they support..
You would be green and vulnerable. My bet is you'd be more effective staying healthy and doing what you can on a broad front as suggested in this cast. There is nothing wrong in doing that, you are a fine person, never doubt it, going by your comment.
at least now you have become aware and feel remorse. Use this and do positive stuff from where you live because unless you are a medic, a mental health practioner or a builder. You are just one more mouth to feed where there is not enough food to go around. Bless you though.

Owen you are doing amazing work that should be recognized and rewarded. Every Palestinian that I've seen online has been an honorable, decent human being, and sadly under constant threat of being eliminated by the settler colonialists. How the Palestinians can be demonized, othered, ignored by our governments, and killed indiscriminately is truly a humanitarian horror.
Barghouti is brilliant, and speaks like a true gentleman. He is one of the most eloquent and insightful of social justice workers. Thank you, Owen, for letting him speak without interruption.
My family has always boycotted Israeli products in my memory, which goes back nearly sixty years.

We have rampant inequality, not enough money is spent on housing, there's an extreme amount of corruption and our electricity infrastructure has taken some hits. Mr. Barghouthi is righ to point out the arab citizens being unable to do anything under the authoritarian regimes ruling their countries. But citizens of the same countries residing abroad, alongside with citizens of their host countries, can do many things to stop this genocide. Failing to do anything is not an option. The urgence of the situation is such that one second of inaction results in more deaths and devastation.

I reached out to my local representative. I did that yesterday. I’m in my 30s. I’m a Libertarian and I have NEVER reached out to my local government before but I felt COMPELLED to do something. I even tried to find local protests, but here in Michigan, it’s not common I guess

This conflict is the root of all conflicts and should be the main focus.
The world has moved on for that myth. Egypt, Jordan, and then the Abraham Accords and sooner than later Saudi Arabia too have proved that the 'Palestine' issue is not an obstacle at all, rather a tool to harass Israel that no longer is effective. The Palestinians should have realized this, still not too late, and just make peace with Israel.

Saudi Arabia won't make peace with the Abraham accords. They are negotiating with the usa for nuclear, military help alongside a palestinian state. Which is why nothing has been signed. Most of these countries had a self interest ie get sinai back, recognise their new gained land.
Peace has not been initiated, israel was the one who left the talks with Sharon. In 2016 an agreement by Obama came and israel didn't want to go forward, but abbas said let's begin the process. While the pa has become unpopular it is still trying to move forward. But it's over, and rightfully so if I was israel why would I want a two state solution when we're winning.

I truly believe I lost my job 3 weeks ago for making a comment about it. My boss was vocally pro Isreal. He would make flippant comments about how Palestinians need to be controlled. I couldnt take it. One day I simply said "As a black guy I cant get down with controlling a whole group of people."
A week later he called me and told me I was fired. I was shocked because I was a top performer at the job. I asked why and he literally said "I dont want to get into it. Im just making some changes. You can come in later for your final check."
Now Im still unemployed and am about to default on some loans. Already defaulted on one. My world is crumbling. Our Christmas tree was bare. I gave everything and I dont think we will recover.

I write and call my reps almost daily, but I'm a 2nd gen Syrian living in Ohio, USA so I don't have much hope I'll change anything in their minds.
