How Interested Are the Lakers in JJ Redick Compared to Other Coaching Candidates?

  • The Lakers don't seem to be in a massive hurry to get something done vis-a-vis the coaching search, since two big names are off the market (Mike Budenholzer, Charles Lee), one isn't likely to get there (Ty Lue) and the only other open job belongs to the Washington Wizards. Meanwhile, oft-named candidates are still occupied, whether that's David Adelman (Denver), Micah Nori (Minnesota), or Sean Sweeney (Dallas).
Or, of course, JJ Redick (ESPN).
Depending on whose reporting in which you want to focus on in any given day-and it should be said, the usual suspects are all doing good work of solid reporting, even if/when some of the reporting doesn't completely match-the Lakers have a high level of interest in Redick, particularly. It's no surprise, given his relationship with LeBron James and what has been a very high profile ascendence into the future coach ranks.
Some reports say the Lakers are currently leaning into Kenny Atkinson as their primary "experienced coach" candidate, with Redick as the primary "new guy," even while the most sought after assistants are still there.
To be clear, all of this is based on the reading of tea leaves, but it's easy to see how if the Lakers really have put Redick at the front of the line, and really are looking at this at least to start as more of a binary between Redick and Atkinson, then it probably means they really want Redick. Is that smart? Is that how it's going to play out?
Lots of questions still to answer!
    HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky
SEGMENT 1: Catching up on the coaching search.
SEGMENT 2: Are the Lakers in deep on Redick?
SEGMENT 3: It's tea leaf season, for sure.

The Lakers just completed an up and down season that the L.A. fans, the majority of the press and two 40 to 50 million dollar a year players seemed to have blamed solely on Ham. Now Buss and Pelinka are really truly considering hiring a Podcaster that has only coached his kid and a bunch of 3rd or 4th graders. I am a long time Laker fan but this right here is CLIPPER like behavior. If this coaching hire doesn't work out then Pelinka needs to pack his bags with the next fired coach no matter who he hires.

@@Murali_bala13 Re- read my post and tell me where you incorrectly assumed I was defending Coach Ham.
I feel like I clearly stated that following the hiring of an inexperienced head basketball ball coach with the hiring of a coach that has only coached his own kid and a bunch of 3rd and 4th graders would be Clipper like or basically bush league. Pelinka needs to go if this coaching hire does not produce results.

JJ is Rob Pelinka, pretty, smart and a kool kid friend of a major star for the franchise. I suspect JJ will be loved by Jeanie as he will look great at Laker events she attends. I listened to the entire podcast. It didn't even seem that was a podcast primarily about Jj Redick, as the topic heading seem to indicate. However, what is glaring, is the omission of Mark Jackson as a potential candidate for Lakers head coaching job, among a long list of names you mentioned, even though you do not like him as a candidate, he deserves a mention like all the others mentioned. Now that the podcast is ending in the last minute, i now see why his name wasn't mentioned.
Yes, we all have our preferences, and good thing Lakers front office won't be listening to you to make a decision. It's a fans podcast, and we expect at least objectivity.

    • @LockedOnLakers
      @LockedOnLakers  Місяць тому

The reason we don’t talk about Jackson as a candidate for the job is that no outlet anywhere has reported the Lakers plan to interview him, far as I know. There’s interest from a segment of fans, but that’s it. When we talk about Jackson, it’s in response to that fan interest. But that’s why we don’t include him in the rest of the conversation. If that changes, and he becomes a more legitimate candidate, we’ll include him. BK

My preference (and ultimate dream) would be for Jeanie to actually get an experienced head of basketball operations that has a grasp of running an organization and get Bob Meyers to call all the shots. That said, it's just a pipe dream. She is too comfy with what she has and JJ has LeBron's blessing, so I expect this to be the choice.

I agree. There was a lot of "if" in what I was talking about. I suspect in the end (and said so) that they'll interview the assistants as well. My point was twofold - first, if as a couple people have reported the Lakers are looking at those two as leading candidates, I do think Redick will absolutely get the job. But even if they widen it out, and again, I think they will, if Redick is receiving a sort of early most-favored status, even if the other guys are good it could be hard to overcome. I hope the process looks pretty conventional by the end of it, and think the odds favor it. But JJ is the sort of quasi-celebrity star coach in this cycle, and the Lakers love that. And he will kill the interview, in part because he'll know how to talk in ways Pelinka will like. Appreciate you watching, and the comment! BK

Edit: Of course, it’s risky. But I would contend that with a coach, it might actually be good to let LeBron and AD have input. LeBron has only “picked” one coach in his career. Truly. That was Ty Lue. In Miami, Riley came down to coach on their Wade title run.. So everyone forgets that he was on thin ice the whole time. (Bron left Miami because he wanted to return to Cleveland… that’s really the FULL reason.) Those guys might know more than us… just saying.

We didn’t say we don’t care what viewers think. We absolutely do, which is why we always encourage people to leave comments, which we often weave into the show. What we’ve said is we don’t care if viewers disagree with us. That’s a different thing, and totally fine. AK

I know you guys are attached to Lakers by the hip. Being a Life-time Laker fan since 1965, the problem is not the coach, it's the owner who wants to make money over championships and a front office that is inept. Gone are the days of Dr. Buss, Jerry West, Pat Riley and Phil Jackson. Come on Man, Jeanie Buss, Rob Pelinka and the Rambiis, Kurt Rambis post playing career has been despicable and Jeanie trust him and his wife who is her bestie. Shit, hire Taylor Swift to be head coach, they Hollywood types will keep filling the seats and pay big money. The only way for Laker future success is for Jeanie to sale the Lakers to someone who has the money to build a championship. If Jeanie wants to save her dad's legacy sale now!

Why would the Lakers consider JJR as a coach when they already gambled on a rookie head coach in darvin ham??? Darvin has assistant coach experience for at least a decade and you really think the front office would consider another rookie head coach with no coaching experience even as an assistant coach??? Thats moving backwards which makes no sense at all to consider JJR. Just because he has a podcast doesn't make him a candidate. Have we learned from the Steve Nash experiment in Brooklyn with no coaching experience to lead a team?? Come on people!!!!

Don't have to get defensive guys,
Mark Jackson is an asinine choice. Period. A guy who has been out of coaching for 10 yrs and has been rather underwhelming doing colour commentary in broadcasting for the past 10 yrs, He comes across as worse on Xs and Os than even Darwin. That's a recipe for disaster. The difference between him and Steve Kerr was a 1st rd or 2nd rd exit team transformed into to a freaking Dynasty... With that coaching change....
So please....no Mark Jackson.. Not even an interview..!!!!!
JJ Redick is intriguing.... The Lakers most important need is a stone cold genius with Xs and Os.... Rest of the inexperience and locker room leadership gaps can and should be covered by LeBron and AD on this roster....
But yes, must have a strong and experienced coaching staff behind Redick.... That's what Steve Kerr did.... that's what Phil Jackson had when he took over the Bulls early in his tenure and we forget that's what Pop had when he inherited Duncan and Robinson team.
And let it be known that all of the above hall of fame coaches won a chip early without head coaching experience
