- Well, it was fun while it lasted.
Earlier this week, it was reported that the Lakers were among the teams that were ready to go with an offer for Cleveland star Donovan Mitchell should he become available. After all, there have been persistent questions about whether or not Mitchell would agree to a (very lucrative) extension with the Cavs, or try to force his way out.
Thursday, at least, seemed to diffuse that notion. Additional reporting suggested that Mitchell wants to build a winner in Cleveland, something bigger than a team that advances a round each year before getting bounced. Now, all of this could be posturing, and until he actually signs an extension people will wonder...
...but this does seem to indicate Mitchell is more likely than not going to stay in Cleveland.
So what's next for LA? On the one hand, there's a legitimate argument to be made that emptying the cupboard for Spida is not a good idea, because the Lakers would be painfully thin and asset free going forward. (There's also an argument to be made for getting him, because he's really good, is not even 30 and isn't positionally redundant to the team's other stars.) But bigger than that, if Mitchell isn't an option, that takes the "easy" road off the table, and demands Rob Pelinka make some harder choices, and do more crafty GMing. Is he up to the job?
It might help if the Lakers had a head coach, and to that end, the robots are weighing in with suggestions. In fact, the robots might be responsible for laying out the criteria LA is looking for in its next head man.

DeJaunte Murray & Jerami Grant would be perfect fits and the high quality starters needed to win in today’s NBA
The Lakers don't likely have enough available/enticing salaries to send out for both Murray and Grant (a combined $56M) that satisfies ATL and POR, much less while maintaining any type of supporting cast even if they did. You'd basically have to trade everyone who isn't LeBron or AD. Never say never, maybe there are creative ways I can't see, looping in third teams, etc. But I imagine they'd have to choose between one or the other if they want anything resembling a roster that's not "three or four names, all vet mins otherwise." I don't like that setup at all. AK
Dude, stop trying to land another superstar and put together a good, deep team with solid role players that make sense. Two top 10 players is more than enough. Look at the Suns.
I agree with this, but that's never been how the Lakers operate. They always chase stars at the expense of depth and future assets.

@dgerch Jeanie is going to do things the way her dad did. That means chasing stars. Unfortunately, the CBA has made the 3-star system obsolete, as seen by the Suns and Clippers. So I think as long as Jeanie is in charge, this will be the mindset of the front office. I think we need to start using our draft picks and developing young talent so we have a good mix of veterans and young athletes. This seems to be the model for teams like Boston, Denver and Minnesota, and will be the key to success moving forward.
The Suns have the most ill-fitting three star team there is. No playmakers, no defensive players. Agreed that its difficult to build a team around three stars but three stars that compliment each other will go far still

Garland is the better fit anyway. An actual point guard with NBA caliber quickness who’ll get more efficient usage out of AD. And Mitchell is about to become super-expensive after next season so Garland’s salary going forward fits better as well.
Jonas, Derozan and a new point guard and revamped bench is the way to go.
Max Christie could be a decent 3d player and with the proper development he could grow.
People forgot this kid was a 5 star recruit and was one of the top 2 guard. He came here young and still learning...so his development is not about Lakers fans overhyping him, but the hope we can develop a kid and he grow and we don't watch him get better with another team. I love how you guys can see that.

No way. Lakers need to focus on Lauri and Sexton plus Clarkson or Collins in a trade. The Utah players are much suited to provide depth and a legit tall scorer in Markannen. Danny Ainge wants picks so he would definitely entertain the offer.

I think RP started out as a trainee GM. He made many mistakes early on. But, I believe, he has learned from his mistakes and is a better GM.

Why would DM go to the Lakers to be the 3rd guy and take the blame if things don’t mesh with Bron and AD? No brainer to take max from Cleveland and be the top dog there instead. Teaming up with Bron as great as he is, no longer guarantees a ticket to the conference finals.

Donovan Mitchell is not enough, we need depth. Lauri, Sexton and Clarkson or Collins from Utah should be the target of the Lakers. Sexton is not a bad point guard who also improved his 3 pt shooting. Then we find a way to get Alex Caruso back from Bulls.
As long as Pelinka is making decisions on roster constructions, we are not getting the best results.
If they cannot get Mitchell.. I have 2 options that lakers must consider:
1. Trade Lauri Markkanen & Steal Malik Monk..
2. Trade Alex Caruso & get Demar DeRozan and Andre Drummond..
Lakers need size, shooting & personnel that can defend..
Best option for lakers.
1. Dlo opts out and leaves.
2. LeBrick opts out and leaves.
3. Lakers would have about 30 million in cap space. Another 7 milion available sign a player. Full MLE.
Offer Klay 3 yrs 60 million.
Offer Valanciunas 3 yrs 40 million.
MLE to Tyus Jones.
Offer Reaves, Rui JHS, Vincent, 3 unprotected 1st Rd picks for Murray and Bogdanovic.
