  • Day 4: Another cloudy morning in Galle today with predictions of rain later on in the day. Only the weather Gods can probably save New Zealand from defeat in this Test match after they conceded 602 runs in the first innings and then were bundled out for 88 when they came out to bat.
Following on they are currently at 199/5 with Blundell and Phillips have stitched an impressive partnership. But this duo and all the remaining NZ batters need to bat out a lot of time to save this Test match and they have to do it on a deteriorating pitch against the spin of Prabath Jayasuriya and Nishan Peiris. A tall ask for New Zealand let’s see how they perform today morning…
Day 3: Two quick wickets in the last over has left New Zealand in a real pickle at 22/2 after spending the better part of the first two days on the field. Both their openers are back in the hut as Sri Lanka seem in complete control of this Test match. A crucial morning coming up for the Kiwis where they really need to build some big partnerships to get back in the contest. The cracks might start to get from prominent from day three as the Sri Lankan spinners will look to get in the game.
Day 2: Sri Lanka bossed yesterday thanks to some sloopy fielding from the visitors to end with 306/3. They'd hope to keep adding to that while New Zealand will look to have a fruitful morning this time around with a new ball that is just 10 overs old. Iqbal Sports Live Match. It is another cloudy breeze day in Galle that seems perfect for cricket but we can expect some disruptions later in the day due to the rain.
Day 1: The pitch seems great for batting but it is going to get tougher as the Test progresses due to the cracks and footmarks that will get the spinners in play. Km Punk Live Match. Farveez Mahroof at the pitch report reckoned 450 would be a good first innings score and Sri Lanka are well on course to get something close to that. Will it be another tough day at the office for New Zealand or can they come storming back?
The opening Test of the two-match series between Sri Lanka and New Zealand had a lot of ebbs and flows to it. Like any typical Test match at Galle momentum shifts were drastic and eventually the most frequent result of a Sri Lanka win surfaced. It's been a good year for the Lankans in Test cricket although the sample size of matches played isn't big enough to make significant conclusions. Crictalks Live.
Wins over Afghanistan and Bangladesh were followed by the England tour where Sri Lanka managed to nail a win in the third and final Test. That momentum rubbed off into the first Test at Galle as the Lankans were relentless even when under the pump. Kamindu Mendis once again rose to the occasion with a majestic first innings ton but Sri Lanka would be disappointed at the other batters not converting their starts in both innings.
To an extent the second innings performance was excusable with the ball gripping and turning square but in general the batting did underperform for the home side. The bowling also wasn't consistent with Ramesh Mendis in particular having a torrid time despite helpful conditions on offer. To their credit New Zealand capitalized on every drawback from their opponents to stretch the game deep.
The visitors however would have hoped for a lot more from their talisman Kane Williamson who got fluent starts in both innings only to slip at crucial junctures of the game. He along with Tom Latham and Daryl Mitchell continue to the bedrock of New Zealand's batting and the trio will need to better their performance in the second Test if the visitors wish to draw level. Ajaz Patel Rachin Ravindra and William O'Rourke put in standout performances which suggest that the support act is there for the Black Caps it is for their lead actors to show the way.
What to expect: Historically the venue has aided the spinners with the first couple of days being the best time to bat. The opening Test match had all the ingredients of a traditional 'Galle Test' and expect more of the same. It is a rainy week in Galle and there could be partial interruptions during the game.
