- A deep dive into Caitlyn Kiramman from Arcane. The video essay is divided into two parts and focuses on Caitlyn before meeting Vi. Part 1 is about her childhood and family as well as her marksmanship. Part 2 is about her life as an enforcer and her relationship to Jayce.

I agree, and she's not over the top like Mel. Her beauty has political purposes, but Caitlyn has no use for hers, so it's extra sweet ❤️
Whats interesting is her choice of weapon and how that highlights a key character quality of hers. Shes a sharp shooter. She is direct, and makes sure she has her target locked before shooting. She focuses on she goal, however she often misses the bigger picture. This is displayed when shes working on the investigation in episode 4 and 5. It doesnt matter what is in the way she still found the target, but she begins to realize the bigger picture when meeting Vi, whose weapon is quit the opposite, which is these big, 50+lb gauntless for hand to hand combat, instead of long range. Caitlyn moves with the target, Vi moves the the target.
Yup, quite right, the choice and use of weapon says so much about Caitlyn as a character!
Caitlyn is calm, composed and reserved until she meets vi, who stirs her personality and heart so much that she hesitates naming jinx in council room for vi...she fell for vi and fell hard....that lip biting scene in shower shows how much she thinks about vi.

Caitlyn is my favorite character. I just love how she isn’t what anyone wants her to be. She’s just her…a sweet, determined, and selfless person. And the way she never backs down no matter what she could lose just makes her such a strong character. A lot of people say that her character is…bad or not important. But I feel like Caitlyn balances out Vi, and their world. Besides that her character design is so hot like I’ve never seen a hotter posh woman-
Yeah, obviously she's mine too :-) And I agree with your astute observation that Caitlyn balances out both Vi and the world. She's the breath of fresh air putting everything in stark contrast. Especially Powder/Jinx is put in sharp contrast with Caitlyn, because they have so much in common.
@@tildaowen Right, she’s a character that contrasts with their world and their norms, and ideologies. Her differences balance things out, and what people fail to remember is that balance is exactly what PILTOVER needs. (Get it?) At least that’s how I see it. Also you just opened my eyes a bit with the contrast with her and Jinx. If you care to, could you elaborate on that?

One small detail I noticed is that Caitlyn's traits of "cool, calm, collected and predictable" are only ever disrupted in the scene where she's holding Jinxes weapon. She's very much not herself in this scene. She's frayed, scared, jumpy and uncertain. For the first time she's not aiming her weapon of precision but one of chaos. She doesn't know what she's shooting for in this moment, she's confused and hesitant.
The one time she's holding a gun after discarding hers for Vi, and it's Jinxes gun.

Yes, that moment where she has Jinx at gunpoint (which I comment briefly in my video about Caitlyn's shower scene) is really interesting for Caitlyn's character development. Her enforcer self and the part that loves Vi are at war with each other, she can't do her job and protect Vi at the same time. So she hesitates. Her emotions are getting the better of her, so yes, not calm and collected! I like your observation that she holds a chaotic gun, not a precision rifle, it's kind of a metaphor for where her life is at that point... Out of her control!
@@tildaowen That's a really interesting observation, Caitlyn's duty and her feelings for Vi are in conflict here.
I believe the relationship she has with her mother is relevant here. She wants to be recognized, to have her choices validated and respected but none of those choices are good ones. Her need to keep Vi in her life vs. proving herself capable.

Jayce having romantic feelings for Cait would be very weird, considering he's a family friend and they have been friends since she was a minor. I'm pretty sure he doesn't have feelings for her.
You might be right, like I said in the video, I don't have enough to go on to make a decisive interpretation... But do you know Jane Austen's "Emma"? That novel shows exactly such a love story...
When you were noting that Caitlyn and Jinx both have their symbols on their ammunition, it might be interesting to mention that Caitlyn's crest is on the bullet... the object with intention, while Jinx's "signature" is on the casings... the things that are left behind in the messy aftermath.
Very nice distinction! Makes me wonder what's on Jinx's bullets! And whether Caitlyn's casings have engraving 🤔 But my guess is not, Caitlyn wants to track what she hits, credit where credit is due! So the casings are less relevant... But for Jinx the messy havoc and evidence of it is more important. She overpowers by scaring people, she has a reputation that makes people afraid, so it fits in with the rest of the drawings, creating terror through staging the places she has been... Cool!
@@tildaowen my headcanon is it's in Piltovers system where all enforcers have bullets where they have their family's crest. Like gun control system, maybe. The writers could use that as a social commentary on gun violence that's happening on America rn.
@@Vizible21 Hmm, interesting reading... A way to track the shooting? But I still believe more in upper class bullets, a way for Cassandra to add finery to Caitlyn's mundane job? Or a tradition for the aristocracy to do? Because I don't really see that level of control over the enforcers, they more or less do as they please, especially in the undercity. And they look almost exactly the same, especially with the masks, deliberately keeping them anonymous in dealing with the undercity dwellers, so I doubt they have added this tracking system... But interesting theory! I definitely see an comment on the use of blunt force and weaponry in policing...
I want to say how much I love your videos. As someone with autism, I struggle with reading things like emotions and facial expressions. I absolutely love Arcane, but thanks to your brilliantly written essays, I now have an even deeper appreciation that I may never have had otherwise.

I don't think Jayce was nervous because he had feelings for her, at least not like that. I think he was nervous because he knew that he was going there to deliver bad news about her career and was worried about her reaction. If anything, I think Jayce is a lot like Caitlyn in the sense that he is more focused on his work than romantic relationships and has a small group of people he confides in and lets his guard down with rather than trying to charm highborn strangers unless absolutely necessary. And interesting enough, both Caitlyn and Jayce are the ones pursued by confident individuals who are charmed and attracted to this integrity and work ethic.
Good point, I agree Jayce is more occupied by work and science than romance, but the focus on the discarded flowers and Jayce's stiff and awkward manner was odd, and it pointed in several directions 🤷🏼♀️
But I wouldn't say that either Caitlyn or Jayce are "pursued" romantically by anyone. Mel is looking for a pawn in her political schemes and sexual gratification (at first at least, later on she genuinely seems to like Jayce, especially when he's in contrast to her mother). And Vi actually tries to avoid romantic attachment... Yes, they like Caitlyn and Jayce for the qualities you mention, but I think the only one actively pursuing a person romantically is Caitlyn, and I'm not sure, she's even doing it consciously, "What about us" just pops out...
@@tildaowen Actually, yeah. Now that I think about it, you're right. Vi and Mel just look at them with something of superficial attraction, and it's only a little bit later that they start to see something in this person that earns their respect and that physical attraction threatens to become emotional.

I haven't seen many in depth analyses of purely Caitlyn - even if she wasn't a main protagonist, I still found her character to be incredibly interesting and multifaceted - it speak to Arcane's attention and depth that even the side characters are fully fleshed out like this. Great video :)
Thanks a lot! Yes, Arcane is really well written and thought through on every level, it's smashing! And though Caitlyn's role in season 1 is not as central as Vi, Jinx, Silco and Jayce, I have a sneaking suspicion that her role will be central in season 2... We'll have to wait and see!

It would be cute, but would probably not make their connection later easier... I think this scene with them on both sides of the door really works well as a twist of fate and foreshadowing on so many counts!

I love Caitlyn so much. I related to Vi pretty hardcore as a big sister, but I my lived experiences feel much more like Caitlyn's, minus being wealthy ha! This was a lovely analysis of her character and some wonderful love for her in general, she deserves it. For me she's an excellent shot-- I mean example of how a character might have the label of side, or secondary, or love interest but really be pivotal to the story, ever side/secondary/love interest should have as much care given in their development. Thanks, Hayley, you touch upon what I'm actually writing about in my next video. In season one Caitlyn is an important side character, but though she's a side character she's pivotal, as you say. And I suspect that she won't be a side character in season 2! But I also agree that the writers of Arcane have been awesome in developing so many of their characters, Caitlyn included. Wonderful, wonderful show!

Of all “Arcane” characters, she’s maybe the only character that sticks to her goals and moral to the very end.
Yes, she is, but I fear it won't hold with her mum dying 🙈 The show is a tragedy after all... But here's hoping 🤞
To be fair, she's also yet to meet any true obstacle that directly challenge her moral until the end of season 1.

I feel Jayce's relationship to Cait in that scene where he gives her flowers is fairly platonic. The nerves you nail with it being over his bad news and I can only read him reaching out to her as an [unneeded] offer of physical support considering her injuries. If anything else, Jayce seems very passive/respectful with romantic gestures from what little we're shown.
Her not mentioning the dead Enforcers is an interesting detail I didn't pick up on at all. For a very justice focused character it's an interesting thing to [not] do and it's not like there wasn't ample opportunity. I love how there's seemingly always something new to spot.
Yes, the show has so much information tucked into every brush stroke, move or gesture it's amazing! You have to pay close attention to get it and once you do, it's so gratifying!
I've heard a lot of good arguments against Jayce having a crush on Caitlyn, so I'm leaning that way too now, but I still see the flowers move as romantic in nature (my brother certainly never brought me flowers!), but in light of the rest it diminishes. I think the show is deliberately ambiguous about certain things (Caitlyn especially) in order to keep us on our toes, keep us guessing...
I thought I was the only one who noticed the possible implications of Jayce bringing Caitlyn flowers. It did strike me as odd. The shot lingers on the discarded flowers as if asking the audience to consider a deeper meaning behind them. It's possible we were meant to see that Jayce was toeing the line of romance, or at the very least understand that Caitlyn had everything but romance on her mind.
Being a sucker for the old fashioned, I did some sleuthing into the language of flowers. I am 90% certain that the flowers are azaleas. An interesting and measured choice if one wants to convey a love message. The are not so blatant as roses, and contain just enough plausible deniability if the recipient does not reciprocate. They represent temperance, wealth, elegance, taking care of a person, and are sent as a gift “when one person urges another to reconsider their feelings” (!) The color white suggests civility, restraint, and purity. The flowers symbolize many of the things that have hitherto boxed in Caitlyn, but they are the characteristics of a partner suitable for her by her parents’ standards.
Looking ahead to season 2, it's fairly likely that Mel will not survive Jinx’s attack. This will knock Jayce off-center, emotionally and mentally. Season 1 has shown that he is vulnerable to suggestion. I don’t think it would take much to convince him to “heal” Piltover by strengthening the clans’ connections and giving the city something to celebrate. Someone might put it in his head to marry Caitlyn. This could serve both of their arcs; one, to further Jayce’s Citizen Kane-esque devolution into politics; two, to give Caitlyn even more reasons to split from Piltover and be her own agent.
I’m still 50/50 on whether Jayce has romantic intentions but I do think others believe they would make a good match. They might have to face the question, romance or not.

Thank you for your interesting insights and theories. The flowers definitely carry a lot of symbolic meaning, and I agree that we're supposed to read into the flowers, since there's so much focus on them. Another commenter actually noticed that they are the same type of flowers that Marcus's daughter holds in her hands at the funeral for the enforcers. Maybe Jayce is expecting to go to the grave with Caitlyn? But actually, I don't necessarily think we are to link the two flowers (because to notice this parallel you either have to be really lucky or watch the whole thing in slowmotion, taking notes to everything...). So I have a suspicion that Fortiche "recycled" the flowers in the scenes to save some time!
About season 2, it will be interesting to see how Caitlyn and Jayce progress, there's definitely going to be interaction between them in the aftermath... I think he no longer has romantic intentions on her, because of Mel, but I think he would want her to help him out with rebuilding Piltover. I think he will appoint her sheriff! And this exchange will be different whether Mel is alive or not...
I agree with everything with exception of the possibility of Jayce being romantically interested in Caitlin. The reason being is that even though they’re both adults Jayce was a fully grown man when they met and watched her grow up.

Thank you! I really like how Vi and Caitlyn's actions can be interpreted in more than one way. If Vi hadn't thrown her weight around in the brothel, using her physique to intimidate Caitlyn, maybe none of them would have seen each other in a different light. Vi tries to push her away by getting in her face, but it has the opposite effect on both of them! 😂
And yes, well spotted, Caitlyn's language does change now you mention it! I think it's both Vi's influence, but also Caitlyn gradually letting go of her fine manners, since they're only useful topside. Furthermore, I think her emotions are getting the better of her the longer she's in the undercity with Vi. Her very foundations are teetering!

I think Caitlyn had so few companions her own age while growing up. She comes across as having been around only adults, she has always had to behave in their company. She doesn't seem to be able to relax much around unknown afults.
Her scenes with Jayce show another side of Caitlyn, much less formal, more personal. The animators make a point to show how much she enjoys an opportunity to hang out with someone closers to her age, who actually seems interested in her as a younger peer.
Caitlyn's father appears rather drunk in the celebration after she won the trophy. Her mother seems embarrassed at his behavior.

I just noticed Caitlyn's body language after she realized Jayce was serious about being a counselor. It drops a bit from the realization of what that might mean for their relationship.
Thank you 😊 I like your point that Caitlyn not only doesn't have peers in a broad sense (perhaps except Jayce), but also when it comes to her age. She's trying to grow up fast, because everyone is older than her, even Jayce! Before Vi she's never interacted on a deeper level with people at her own age. She tried and failed with her colleagues...
I don't think Jayce would fall for the girl he has known since she was a teenager, while he was an adult. The nervousness was definitely the bad news, let's not make it weird, especially when a writer confirmed that she wrote their relationship/interactions to be similar like her own (the writer) and her own brother
Well, I don't pay attention to what is tweeted by writers, etc. I just analyse what I see. And him bringing flowers like that felt weird to me, my brother would never do that. And I'm not suggesting that he fell in love with her, just a crush, fancying her a little. Or at least having trouble figuring out his own role in connection with her going forward, they are moving into uncharted waters...

Very good video. I personally like the detective in her, the eye for detail, the obsession with solving mysteries. They "put together" these personality traits with her life very well, it doesn't feel "glued together". As a person who shares this passion, I can say that I understand her (the relationship with other people, whether they are close or not). I really hope this doesn't change in season two (however much screen time they give her).
Thank you! Yes, I agree, Caitlyn is a very round character, her qualities make sense as a whole, very well written! I think she will develop, perhaps in a sad/negative direction in season 2, but I hope like you that it is in keeping with her character in season 1...
As much as I like Jayce and Caitlyn's relationship I think it's a bit one sided. Jayce genuinely likes Caitlyn but he doesn't really see her or understand her. Not the way she understands him. I never noticed during their introduction scene Jayce doesn't really look at Caitlyn when they're talking. Neither do her parents when we see them. The moment when he does look at her when they talk is during the rain scene. I think this is the moment when Jayce realizes just how lucky he is to have Caitlyn as a friend. After being disowned by the Kirammans and his mother (in his eyes) publicly betrays him Caitlyn is still there. She encourages him to not give up and doesn't see him any differently despite his failures. Even throws herself under the misfit lable with him. For Jayce social class definitely matters to him so to have someone so far above him still treat him like an equal probably means a lot. ( And probably also helps him accept Victor as his friend and equal partner later) It's pretty interesting that the only friend we see Jayce have pre time skip is someone over ten years younger than him ( I feel like this says a lot about him but I'm not sure what yet). But we see post time skip that Jayce value's Caitlyns friendship so much because he knows how valuable and rare a person like Caitlyn is.
But we do see that one sidedness in their friendship when he goes to give her flowers. He doesn't understand why she's so hung up on the grand conspiracy and encourages her to take a desk job he knows she'll be against. Caitlyn is the truest friend that Jayce has but it's not a two way street.
I don't think Jayce has any romantic feelings for Caitlyn. I think his behavior is a combination of his new status as her equal and his nervousness at the bad news he has to deliver. It's not just Jayce visiting his friend. It's councilor Talis visiting the Kiramman heiress, so he can't quite get away with being so informal and is trying to play the part of a councilor. He needs to be adult, gentlemanly, in charge. But I also think, on a more emotionally honest level, that he's going to his friend who has been in a horrible attack that got her coworkers killed and she's probably in a really bad place. Maybe needs a hug- until he see that Caitlyn is in conspiracy mode and realizes 'oh she's fine but I have to make sure she doesn't do something dangerous'.

agree he probably didnt have romantic intentions. when i first watched it, i thought maybe they were setting up a love triangle with jayce, cait, and vi, but the way things played out didnt seem to suggest that. definitely seems like they have a family friend/sibling-y relationship.

Really interesting points you make. I agree, the relationship between Jayce and Caitlyn is one sided. I think that Caitlyn is supposed to be seen as not being interested in Jayce, because she's supposed to be with someone else... But in my opinion her lack of interest in Jayce doesn't necessarily have to do with the fact that he's a man... 1: Caitlyn is way too preoccupied to notice any of his attentions and 2: he doesn't take her seriously enough and even joins the council, so he's not on her radar like that... And this second reason is part of what you talk about, blank space, he benefits from her friendship, but he's too concerned with status and political importance to realise what Caitlyn is really about...
I have seen more than one comment that says something along the lines of "I thought he might be a little interested in her, but by the time she met Vi, I realised that she was was a lesbian (or meant to be with someone else)" And that seems correct, but! The thought was there for a moment! Before meeting Vi, we don't know where her preferences lie, if they even lie anywhere specific. So why are we shown Jayce maybe fancying her a little? (I mean, if I were a man, I would!!! I do as a woman!) Because it shows that Caitlyn is desirable and extremely eligible. Caitlyn would be a magnificent match for Jayce's up and coming political career. The scene also shows that she is focused on work and that it takes extraordinary circumstances and an extraordinary person to raise her interest. And we get this information from sooo little info on screen! Wow, so well done!

@@tildaowen it almost seems like any fledgling feelings jayce might have had towards cait would have been less from real romantic chemistry and more from a sort of sence of obligation/place, like it might be somewhat expected that they could get together but he's neither fully crushing nor fully putting the time into going down that road.
and of course now he and mel are on a path together which i hope will continue (praying that most of the council survives... anyone know if there was any hextech in the boardroom that could have pulled up a shield like vi did against sevika? aaahh)
@@badbunnyky Yes, thank you! That is the first interpretation that makes sense to me! She is a very good match, she is his good friend and he feels guilty about the loss of her job, so he feels obligated to offer her sth in return, even if he doesn't quite understand what it really entails. Now that he is colleague to her mother he feels responsible for the mother's actions and wants to help. (Oh, and it doesn't hurt that she's wholesome and yummy... 😉)
@@tildaowen and @Ky yes this exactly what I was going for. Jayce's little attempt at being a "suitor" feels awkward and half hearted. Not like what you would do with an person you had real interest in. It's all about Jayce trying to role play what he thinks he should be doing according to Piltover standards and Caitlyn having absolutely no time for that nonsense.

The wait is hard! My best guess is that season 2 comes out November 23... So far away! 🙈 But the first season took 5-6 years, so I think two years seems long enough to make it good (since they already started season 2 a while ago) and still shorter because they've done a lot of the setting and character animation already...

I find it interesting that jinx was actually a really good shot in the childhood scenes, I almost was surprised that Vi didn't acknowledge her shooting as her "special skill" when they were kids. Yet now, she's using high powered guns that have less precision but more power.

Yes, Jinx seems to have sort of lost that skill in favour of bomb making... And I agree, Vi overlooks that, but maybe it's because they don't need that skill? They're not muggers or killers in the gang, but burglars... But how the bomb making fits into that I don't know...

Great video as always! I watch almost all UA-cam videos at 2x speed, but I always watch yours at the normal speed because I don’t want to miss anything! I really enjoyed you revisiting Caitlyn’s brief scenes in act 1 as well as act 2 (prior to meeting Vi).
Jayce and Caitlyn’s roles being reversed (with Jayce being the one to go to her at the beginning of episode 4) was something I never really noticed! I always imagined that her parents were the ones pushing her to learn more about Jayce’s studies, which was why she was with him at the beginning of episode 2, but I really like your interpretation of Caitlyn being the one who invited herself along. It matches really well with her stubborn and self-assured nature that she showed a lot of especially in her childhood scenes. You also made a great point in saying that young Caitlyn wasn’t bothered when Jayce casually brought up their wealth/social disparity, believing them to be equals despite that (it’s heartbreaking to know that she’ll painfully learn how wrong she is later on in life, with the way her fellow enforcers treat her and her fallout with Vi in episode 8). And I like how you mentioned that young Caitlyn wasn’t afraid to voice her opinions in front of her parents in episode 2 (I’d like to think this means they probably doted on her and she’s used to getting what she wants in certain scenarios), so she was throughly disappointed when they changed their minds and went against what she thought they all agreed on as a family. It’s very insightful of you to also point out that Caitlyn wasn’t just waiting out in the rain for Jayce’s sake, it was also an act of rebellion against her parents.
And I really love how you pointed out that both episode 1 and 2 parallel each other by starting from the younger “sibling’s” perspective. I never noticed that! It sort of reminds me of a Tweet that pointed out how Vi and Caitlyn also share a parallel by having both of them comfort their “sibling” in episode 1 and 2, respectively, which contrasts their personalities because Vi took Powder to the rooftops to tell her an elaborate and personal story, while Caitlyn just flat out told Jayce not to give up on his dream. I think another parallel is between Jayce, his mom, and Caitlyn. Jayce couldn’t empathize with his mom’s decision to prioritize his freedom to stay in Piltover over his freedom to pursue his dream. Ironically, after the time skip, he was in his mom’s shoes trying to stifle Caitlyn’s dream in order to keep her safe. His cold rejection towards his mom was directed back to him by Caitlyn 7 years later.
Since I’ve been referring to Caitlyn and Jayce as siblings, I’m sure you can already tell that I disagree about Jayce perhaps having romantic feelings for Caitlyn in episode 4. As some other comments have already said, I strongly believe his nervousness stems from him knowing that Caitlyn won’t be happy about the news of her parents relieving her of her job, him becoming a councillor, and his wavering hope that his job offer to Caitlyn will dampen those blows. Mel, being such a perceptive people-reader, didn’t show any sign of jealousy when Jayce voiced his concern over Caitlyn’s disappearance in episode 7. Mel must have been keeping a close eye on Jayce’s romantic interests over the time skip, so it’s safe to also assume that Jayce didn’t show any romantic interest towards Caitlyn prior to episode 4 (though this is not what you were pointing out in this video). I see what you mean by Jayce not showing too much enthusiasm/joy in the immediate moments after Mel first kissed him (I certainly hope Caitlyn and Vi will show a lot more emotion than that during their first kiss), but I interpreted that as just confusion and shock. He probably had some interest in Mel over the years but never expected her to return those feelings. Jayce was clearly enthusiastic about what was going on in the scenes following their kiss, and in the morning after he was extremely vulnerable with Mel (resting his head in her lap, reaching for her hand and tenderly kissing it), I don’t think he would have been so open if he had interest in any other person prior to that moment. When applying modern views to the situation, it would also be extremely dubious for Jayce to fall for someone whose live he was actively a part of since she was ~14 and he was 24. Sorry for the rant! I guess I just really enjoy their platonic/familial bond and don’t want there to be a hint of it ever being anything else.
Your discussion of Caitlyn’s shooting competition scene was great too! As you said, Grayson must have been rather amused by her seriousness, though there was depth in how much Caitlyn valued a fair competition at such a young age. Even though I agree with what you said about Caitlyn not hunting animals or people and what that means, I must point out that the Kiramman family portrait shows a dead, beige/brown bird-looking creature near the bottom, with some hunting dogs on the left side. I would never have noticed that detail if I didn’t see a Tweet about it. I guess an interpretation for this is that Caitlyn comes from a background that forces her to kill animals, but she actively chooses to reject doing that.
I’m really glad you brought up the fact that Caitlyn is a very private person who rarely talks about herself. It’s such a fascinating contrast to Vi, who tries to be more guarded but ends up sharing a lot of herself to Caitlyn. I absolutely cannot wait to see more of them in season 2!

Jayce can't see how he as an adult is becoming much more like his mother. Perhaps he realises it when he reconciles with his mother?
About Jayce and Cait's relationship, I see what you mean about Jayce and Mel: "He probably had some interest in Mel over the years but never expected her to return those feelings" Jayce has some issues about class and status for sure! He knows his house is not a councilor's house and his status is below Caitlyn. So yeah, going for Mel was probably something he never in a million years would have expected even if he fancied her. But I don't think Mel kept tabs on him in the time gap with romantic intentions in mind. She seduces him for power and politics. She probably did keep tabs on him for exactly those reasons. She is very awkward when he starts to cuddle and open up to her, definitely not her thing! But she warms up to him too in the end...
Maybe my read on Jayce as fancying Caitlyn and not fancying Mel at first, is my prejudiced view of men...? In my experience (both personal and through moderns media) a man gives a woman flowers to 1: his mother or 2: a girl he fancies. Not his sister... (my brother certainly never did, he gave me get well presents in other forms). Also I think (perhaps wrongly) that most men when kissed by a seriously hot and beautiful woman are relatively easy to win over (unless they are in love with someone else, and though I think he has a crush on Caitlyn, he's not in love with her). So he is slow on the uptake with Mel, but is not hard to convince. And once you have bedded someone like Mel, you want to hold on to her!
But like I said in the video, this is all conjuncture based on very little evidence either for or against!
The family portrait is so interesting, I could've said so much more about it as well as the family crest/coat-of-arms! As you say: "the Kiramman family portrait shows a dead, beige/brown bird-looking creature near the bottom, with some hunting dogs on the left side." Yes, I noticed that too, but I had to take a screenshot and zoom in to be sure, so it's not necessarily something that the audience is supposed to associate with Caitlyn. Going hunting and shooting is a typical upper class and "old school British aristocracy" thing to do, so the portrait was staged to fit into that image (both by the parents and the creators of the show). I like your interpretation, "that Caitlyn comes from a background that forces her to kill animals, but she actively chooses to reject doing that." Her shooting for sport, freedom and peace is another way to go against the privileged background!

This is just something random I think I spotted. Is the hat that she is holding while sitting in the chair discussing Jayce's fate, the same one that Tobias is holding in the protrait? They look pretty similar. Would sort of be an interesting comment on their relationship. That comforting idea of a "here you go, you can hold dad's hat" moment is pretty endearing.
Well spotted! I think it is if not the same hat, then the same type of hat. It's endearing, yes, it shows her father's kindness towards her, but it also shows and further proves her impatience in growing up faster. She wants to be the adult, holding the hat, making the decisions...

the longer i think the more similarities i find... intelligent, obsessive (as commented by vi), gun as weapon of choice, big hearted as kids, controlled by powerful figures, etc... but in other ways theyre quite like jin and mugen in samurai champloo, one wild and talented, the other cunning and skilled.

Thanks a lot! And yes, Caitlyn seems to see everyone as people to serve and protect, both Zaunite's and Pilties, so when she is stuck with only privileged work, she gets really annoyed. But despite this holistic view, she doesn't seem to connect to those enforcers at all. Maybe both because almost all other enforcers we see are so nasty, treating the undercity like crap, and because she misses something on a personal level with them?
You might be right, of course. As you pointed out, not connecting personally is a well documented struggle she has. Having less compassion due to general enforcer nastiness doesn’t feel quite right to me. I liked how you described her reaction to them and didn’t pick up on any further thoughts of them being part of a nasty group. Why would she be eager to join that group? She seems naive to Ekko’s/VI’s accusations about enforcers. She is optimistic about people in general seeking to find resolutions to small and big problems alike. She is willing to forgive faults of individuals and focus on their redemption unless they’re Silco or Jinx who must be brought to justice (or worse if the Jinx showdown in the finale is an indication). She’s also quick to show compassion to those she barely knows (Huck) and gives the benefit of the doubt to everyone up to a point. I still feel like she would have attended the funeral if she had been physically able if only to show her moral support and maybe because she “failed” to prevent the worst of the damage. It could be the writers weren’t saying anything specific on this but given their track record that seems unlikely unless it was left on the cutting room floor.
@@jasonmkc7797 Very good points! I agree, the enforcers on the steps are bigoted, but not nasty... So there must be factions within the force, some that go to the undercity, some that stay in Piltover. Maybe the hats indicate this? Also notice how all enforcers in the undercity look like men though they are masked... Why is that?
But as to the funeral, she's definitely able to go, but she goes to the prison instead... It happens a approximately the same time.

I love the show, and Caitlyn is one of my favorites. After watching the show myself, I made my friends watch it too, and by the end of it, I asked them who they're favorite character was. They both said they liked Vander, which is super understandable, but both pointed out that Caitlyn's character didn't do much for them. They pointed out her high-status in Piltover and said she was a bland character. Both her status and position as an enforcer didn't sit well with them for some reason, and I didn't know how to feel about that. I tried to voice my favorable opinions about her, but I'm no good with words, so I don't think I got anything across to them. They're allowed their opinions, obviously, but I just wished they came into this with an open-mind. Then again, I did make them watch this, even though they didn't express any interest in Arcane before, so I shouldn't have expected much.
Well, a lot of people overlook Caitlyn, because she is perhaps one of the most "normal" people in the show and also the most good (like Vander), so in that sense she is boring as opposed to Vi, Jinx and Viktor who are traumatised, flawed, conflicted, unlucky, morally dubious at times, etc. She is not central to the main story arcs of either Vi and Jinx or Jayce and Hextech (imo she is, but you can make a thorough summary of the show without mentioning her).
But even if you accept this "boring" premise, she is still important to the show in order to have balance. To weigh and contrast the good with the bad, offsetting the tragedy in the other characters' lives. She is the counterweight to Jinx in Vi's story.
But after I saw the shower scene, Caitlyn changed for me. She has a complex character arc of her own, and come next season I doubt if your friends will write her off (if you can convince them to watch the second season...). I think her role in the scheme of things will grow proportionate to her growing experience with tragedy and adversity... The teaser for season 2 reveals that. It shows that the central conflict will be between Vi, Jinx and Caitlyn...

Well, Caitlyn is good with words except when she's talking about herself... Then she has serious problems putting her feelings/thoughts into words! She's not used to wanting someone like Vi for herself, so she has no idea what to say until "what about us" pops out of her mouth ❤️
Once again a great video - as expected! I can join easily most of the opinions you explain, but...(now it comes) at the end you talk about Cait having no "own" people which i believe is wrong. I think she sees the peole of Piltover and the Undercity all as her people because she makes no difference in the origin of people...so their are no differences for her. More intersting is her behavior to her enforcer colleagues - she corrects one about the airship (and is right in it) but nobody likes fault finders and so is the reaction she gets...her problem is to get on colleague level with them and her on duty behavior mind she also not makes sympathic to them and this is the problem. Caitlin is on duty and has nothing in common with them, she is not the guy going on a drink with her colleagues after the job is over, for she the job is never over and this shows her lack of experience to befriend people, to make them like you and so a generous, courious and open minded young woman makes herself an outsider under the enforcers, which she is also because the status of her family. Caitlyn is not able to overcome this deficit. This is only happen to Jayce and Vi people to their "expertise" she can look up (Jayce in science/hextech and Vi in Undercity streetwise)...she has clearly problems to overcome the status she represents as a Kiraman. Think her problem is that she herself thinks their is no difference between people by their origin, not seeing it really exists.

Excellent points! I agree with you that in a way everyone in both Piltover and the undercity is Caitlyn's "people". She believes in equal rights, especially in the sense that "just because you have a name, money and a seat at the table, it shouldn't give you more rights or privileges than other people"... So in that sense, she belongs to everyone and she wants to help everyone, but mainly those who are in need, i.e. not the privileged ones which most people in Piltover are (that we've seen anyway...).
The exception may be the enforcers, she tries to help her colleagues with information, but they misunderstand her intentions, sadly... So Caitlyn has a mission (the great conspiracy and helping people), but she lacks connection. Especially when her connection to Jayce and her parents starts to go sour. Her mission sends her to the undercity where she finds the connection she's been missing. In Vi and in the downtrodden people of the undercity... Well, that's at least how I see it, more about that in my next video!

Oh yay, this video is up now :) another great one! I really love that the Kiramman family is matriarchal and I find Caitlyn’s relationship with her mother fascinating. I also hadn’t really thought about how much Caitlyn and Powder are paralleled and juxtaposed throughout the show in smaller actions and objects but you’re right! I also hadn’t noticed that she never brings up the dead enforcers again, the idea that she doesn’t necessarily align with them by the time she meets Ekko is interesting as her job is such a big part of her character in the 4th ep, however I think she’s seen/heard so much of the horrible things enforcers do by the time ep 7 comes she probably knows she needs to distance from them a bit.
All the small details give the show so much depth and it gives us so much content to mine for all these tidbits until the next season comes out so thanks for creating content diving into it all.
I agree, so many details that can be interpreted, the amount of layers in Arcane is staggering!
I expected Caitlyn to respond to Ekko with something like "I lost six colleagues three days ago", sort of to show that they are both sides struggling and peace is the way forward, but she doesn't. So either they're not her people or she foregoes her own feelings and situation in favour of his... And I think both are valid readings, it is characteristic of Caitlyn not to talk about herself, always putting the focus on those who need her help....
I like Caitlyn and Jayce's dynamic. I want a brother like that.
I like their friendship too, though I think Jayce should take Caitlyn more seriously. Then again Jayce makes her lighten up a little, she needs that!
@@tildaowen ah yes the typical older brother thing. They never take their younger sister seriously. Though it didn't showed, I think Jayce is a little sexist/conservative. I think he is the kind of person who would think "man should do this" and "man ought to do that" and "women should not/don't have to do these". The scene when he killed a kid and worries about informing his parents says it all. He has formed on his mind a perfect world where everything is perfecly in order and everybody get their "part", their position and their own duty (is this why he has hesitations when he transition from a scientist to a politician?)
Idk but Cailtyn also has vision, a different one. Although both are naive, in their own way, about the undercity word and its people's life, when Caitlyn are exposed to that world, she feel like she need to do something, to change the situation, instead of coping by denial ( as Vi said to Jayce, "you have always been a part of this")
I think this why by the end of season one we see Caitlyn and Jayce drift apart, she even felt like he isn't the person she used to know.
But I love them so much i hope them understand each other's views in Ss2 and become close again.
Oh, even though Caitlyn is totally physical capable of multiple sports, self-defence and her job as an enforcer Jayce still told her to get a safer job. Simply putting her down, invalidated her and her desperate effort to prove herself to her mother. That's sexist. I bet men never say such things to each others. They wouldn't tell each others to just simple give up and choose the easier option. Considering they have know each other for so long, that show how Jayce paid so little attention to what Caitlyn actually wants or what her dream is. He was just simply being an overprotective older brother and a perfect, and an model that she can look up to.
Cait was very lonely in the topside, and he was the only one she could talk to, and he was there, but he wasn't paying attention.
I think for Jayce there will always bigger and more important stuff to do and Caitlyn will forever remains the little sister he adore, even though both have grown up/changed. She should do the things little girls do, not something big like presenting a solution to fix the Zaun-Piltover relationship in a council meeting. How much can a little girl know about war anyway?

Jayce is definitely patronising Caitlyn in a sexist way, trying to protect her for her own good (Vi does the same by the way, so maybe not sexist, just a love thing? Protecting those you love?). My brother NEVER treats me in that way, but he is younger... He does tease me, but bring me flowers? Don't make me laugh! He takes me at face value, no patronising there (thank God!) In Denmark brothers aren't so protective of sisters as much as in America (from my experience...), so the nervousness and the flowers felt romantic to me, not brotherly at all... But no matter why Jayce does it, Caitlyn dislikes his patronising approach, as if she needs help, as you say, she's as fit and self-sufficient as him!

I actually search for Cait/Jayce fic after seeing that scene (and there wasn't a lot of them). I'm fine with people shipping the two but the age gap plus the fact how young Caitlyn was before time skip made it awark, plus I'm satisfied with the CaiVi and Jayce/Mel settlement so i just want them to be very close friend instead (but the age gap and Jayce manner made it look more like an older sibling -younger sibling who look up to him relationship)
Controversial enough, i think Cait even had a crush on him when she was small. Not in a creepy way. We all do that when we was like 12 and we saw some celebrities who are in their 20s and choose them as our perfect ideal type/idol/person to look up to. Of course we wouldn't think about having a sexual relationship with them but with the person being of the opposite sex and how this society program children about hetero marriage we world have some scenario in our head like "when I grow up I will marry him/someone like him". Totally normal for children at that age, when they haven't discover their sexuality.
And when Caitlyn grew up she indeed has grown into a very beautiful attractive young woman, and Jayce, being the gentleman he is, just treated her the way he thinks beautiful women should be treated. There is enough distance from them to stop Jayce from being a true brother to her: her being from the upper most class of the society and her family sponsor him while he has a rough childhood and had to prove himself to the world and made his way to this position by hard work. They can't never be open to each other as 2 people from the same background. (As I wrote this I realize Caivi works because Cait see everybody as equal and Vi never see Topsider anything more than asshole anyways. She hates everyone, the enforcer that took everything away from her, and the undercity life she was trapped in and desperately wanted to change, everyone except powder. And now Caitlyn, because she's different from the rest.)
Where was I? Oh the distance thing. Enough distance will keep them as good friends, but not as close as family, and let Jayce do some social politeness and admiration a man and do to a woman to Caitlyn.

Yes, Caitlyn doesn't want to treat people differently no matter who they are and where they're from, but people constantly treat her in that way or read class differences into what she says (cp guard duty scene). So she's used to being pampered and treated as superior and it's so refreshing for her to meet Vi who disdains all entitlement... 😂

I'm stunned. This video and your narration are impeccable. I hate that I haven't got the time to watch this sooner as I've been dying to. But I feel much relief now.
About the "does Jayce fancy Caitlyn?" little segment of the video. While for a split second you almost had me believing Jayce could have had some romantic interest in her, as your words and presentation are very charmin and well showcased, nah, I don't think so. I believe their relationship was always presented and meant to be as friends and sibling-like. Nothing romantic was set for them.
And just in case it turns out Jayce's flowers were more on the romantic gesture side than the get well present, I think the scene served to show that not only Caitlyn is 100% focused on work, she is also not interested romantically in men. Since I read the writers take seriously the intention of showing to what the characters are attracted to I think it's obvious they wanted to make it clear that Caitlyn (with this interaction with Jayce and then the girl at the brothel) isn't interested in men and is interested in women, romantically. Not to mention the obvious romantic undertone of at least half Caitlyn and Vi's interactions.
Also I think the closing of this video is one of my favorite parts of it. The bits about how Caitlyn sees herself not belonging and that something or 'someone' is missing. That was beautiful because of the imagery.
Indeed the more we look into Caitlyn the more there is to her, and I absolutely love her for it and at the same time for her subtlety as a character in the first season. I certainly do not like that people who watch the show overlook at her or dismiss her as not as interesting as other characters, because they're wrong. And I expect season 2 to showcase Caitlyn even more. I cannot wait.

About Jayce and Caitlyn, I totally agree that Caitlyn is supposed to be seen as not being interested in Jayce, because she's supposed to be with someone else... But in my opinion her lack of interest in Jayce doesn't necessarily have to do with the fact that he's a man... 1: Caitlyn is way too preoccupied to notice any of his attentions and 2: he doesn't take her seriously enough and even joins the council, so he's not on her radar like that...
I have seen more than one comment that says something along the lines of "I thought he might be a little interested in her, but by the time she met Vi, I realised that she was was a lesbian (or meant to be with someone else)" And that seems correct, but! The thought was there for a moment! Before meeting Vi, we don't know where her preferences lie, if they even lie anywhere specific. So why are we shown Jayce maybe fancying her a little? (I mean, if I were a man, I would!!! I do as a woman!) Because it shows that Caitlyn is desirable and extremely eligible. It shows that she is focused on work and that it takes extraordinary circumstances and an extraordinary person to raise her interest. And we get this information from sooo little info on screen! Wow, so well done! I'll say no more now, because I'm stepping on my own punchlines from the next video... 😉
@@tildaowen My thoughts on the "Jayce brings flowers to Caitlyn" scene showing Cait is not interested in men comes mostly from what I've read by writer Amanda Overton in regards to the characters' preferences in attraction and it probably does little to hold water. But I see your point and I can't help but agree. I mean, Caitlyn IS desirable❤ And to be complete honest, if Jayce did fancy Cait even if a little, NO ONE HERE OR ON THE SHOW WOULD NOR SHOULD BLAME HIM BECAUSE SAME.

The Anti-Powder. I just feel so sad for Powder/Jinx she has no one left in her corner. Vi has Caitlyn,Ekko and now Jayce,but Aside from Vi giving Powder encouragement, it was Silco. 😢 everyone has a crush on Caitlyn and Vi.
I feel sad for Powder/Jinx too, absolutely! She's been dealt a very harsh life! But so has Vi and she handles her trauma much better than Jinx (though Vi makes lots of mistakes and poor choices too). Jinx unscrupulously kills people, going even further than Silco orders.
Caitlyn is privileged and sheltered, but she actively tries to gain perspective and treats people with respect.
So do I feel like Jinx is the bad guy/villain? No, that's Silco! But I understand and resonate much more with Vi and Caitlyn, than I do with Jinx. She goes too far, imo... 🤷🏼♀️
@@tildaowen Caitlyn wanted to step out of her Mother’s shadow and Control. She still talked to Jayce despite her family, what would be the word … banishing, discarding him. Making him a pariah pretty much forbidding Caitlyn from just being friends. She talked to him anyway. Caitlyn do not want to feel controlled by her mother. Caitlyn’s Father felt more supportive though. Caitlyn also idolized Greyson and most likely the reason she wanted to become an Enforcer. Still in the end her Mother did allow Her and Vi to speak to the Council when she could’ve just said no. When it comes to Silco, one of the most compelling villains. The acting from Jason Spisak, Ella Purnell absolutely amazing. I cried for the bad guy,plus It must’ve been exhausting for Ella to act mental breakdowns in a sound booth. Hailee Steinfeld was also fantastic too but that last scene broke me. Silco really did care for Jinx. After the “ I would never have given you to them, not for anything don’t cry you’re perfect” I was done, I was a mess. Every time it looked liked Vi had Powder, something would happen, at the worst possible time, pushing them further apart. It’s a Greek tragedy.

I saw it more as a cop out from Silco: Not admitting that he messed Jinx up, not helping her find her own truth, but reinforcing his instead, she was his perfect chaos, his little devoted enforcer (not in the police sense, but crime sense)... I think he truly loved her, but only as much as a really selfish and megalomaniacal man can...
@@tildaowen I think they are going to kill Jinx in season two, and I don’t think she’ll give a damn. After killing Silco the only person who gave her encouragement besides her sister is gone. Powder’s childhood trauma and guilt of killing her family and anyone who she thinks cared about her combined with Vi’s Words that she is a Jinx,Mylo was Right. She now fully believes that after killing Silco. I thought when Jinx was fighting Ekko on the bridge Powder resurfaced for the briefest of moments, I think she did not like what she was becoming and wanted to just finish it. Silco however could not bare the thought of losing Jinx. So he took her to Dr. Frankenstein to save her. He carried her himself to the doctor in panic. Powder died on the bridge and Jinx came back for good thanks to the Doctor. “ sometimes death is a mercy” the doctor said. “are you prepared to lose her?”. Crazy Tragic

Vi is still there, and their sibling relationship will still play a part, even though I don't think Vi has much hope any more (neither of them do). And if the rumours are true, Singed has kept Vander alive, and brings him back in the conflict somehow, that'll be interesting to see!

Question: How are there hints that she used to sneak in other girls into her room? I see nothing.
I see no evidence of that either (I comment on it indirectly in the "Why does Caitlyn fall for Vi" video). Apparently, Amanda Overton has made a comment that the mother doesn't look surprised at Caitlyn bringing in a stray to her bedroom. This has made some people believe that Caitlyn brought girlfriends to her room... I disagree, I believe she's totally inexperienced when it comes to having lovers (she's too busy opposing her mother and doing her job)...

I don't think Jayce ever thought of a romantic relationship with her, it's still a 9 year age gap, and they've been like siblings. Caitlyn doesn't seem ashamed of her sexual orientation so I'd be surprised if he didn't know she's gay (atleast i don't interpret her as bi following the brothel scene, the narrative of being uncomfortable with Pim but very comfortable with both Fern and Vi says a lot.)
I think jayce was acting a bit nervous cause he was gonna ask her to take on a job on his security force.
I don't think Caitlyn knows she's gay... In all info before meeting Vi, she's just not focused on sexuality or relationships, but instead work, truth, principles, etc. So her not being ashamed of her own sexuality is just not sth I see in her... Or in the show at all! It's about love and relationships, not sexuality or gender... I love that about the show! Just cutting away that layer completely. People fall in love with people ❤️❤️❤️

She was wayyy too comfortable with the woman in the brothel vs Pim and one of the writers joked on Twitter that there was something familiar to Cassandra about Caitlyn sneaking girls into her room (when discussing Mrs Kiramman pointing her gun at Vi in ep 8). I definitely saw sibling vibes between Jayce and Caitlyn hehe. But yes the rejection of the flowers did make me laugh when I first watched! To me it seemed like more of a deliberate show to straight viewers, who would inevitably have shipped Jayce and Cait, that it wasn’t a thing. The thing that makes me laugh even more is that there are actually quite a few people out there who ship Vi and Jayce 😂

I do say something about that in the next video, though, also the "and you brought a stray" remark, which does indicate a recurrent scene. I think it's so difficult with the remarks by the writers of Arcane because they are deliberately ambiguous so as not to reveal anything... So I try to focus on what I analyse and interpret from season 1 footage only, and when season 2 comes all my theories can be disproven within a few minutes... 😂😂

I didn't like that fact at first because like you, i was headcanon that Caitlyn wasn't sure about her sexual orientation. She either thought she was an ace/ never thought about sex/ just to work and future focus to think about stuff like dating or romance... or she was a closet lesbian... and shy... or she has had vague idea and feelings before, but wasn't sure, because that's either not a thing or is taboo in Piltover (again this is headcanon).
But now I kinda throw that fact every chance have at the face of the people who dare to claim Cait is not gay and there was nothing going on between her an Vi, or to someone who says she was bi. My girl knew what she was doing and what she wants, she's a Kiramman, she can have the best guys in Piltover and they would even have to beg for her attention, considering she had it all: look, brain, her last name, personality, and a good heart.

Thanks a lot! I do love analysis and Arcane very much, but Jinx doesn't resonate with me as much as other characters do... I'd be more inclined to look into Ekko and the Firelights or maybe Mel (not that I resonate with her either, I just find her interesting in a subtle way. Nothing subtle about Jinx!). Or perhaps the comparison between Jinx and Caitlyn?
@@tildaowen that's honestly a shame considering how much I personally resonate with jinx. mostly because of our shared mental illnesses and understanding the way she sees the world around her through her distorted, trauma-ridden lens. but that connection I have to jinx and even Vi is most probably why i was so drawn to your analysis videos so much. unlike vi and jinx who i was able to latch onto so effortlessly and understand their mentalities, points of views, and the way they navigate their worlds, Caitlyn was someone who I got to understand and resonate with through your videos! and turns out that maybe, she and I are not so different in terms of goals, ambitions and inspiration. she is literally a gem and I adore her to bits

Jayce is not only the person young Caitlyn look up to, he is also a chance to briefly escape from Kiramman home, maybe not to seek or join, but hear some adventures from. She always wanted to see the world. And I think she looked up to Grayson more later on, than she look up to Jayce. Wish we could see more Grayson and Caitlyn scenes though.
By the way, can someone explain how she doesn't need a mask while travelling all of the Undercity later? She's the only topsider that didn't used a mask down there. (I lose so many details while watching, I watched the whole series three times and there are many things I still couldn't see. This one stuck with me for weirdness reasons.)
We may not be sure about exactly how she learned to use a rifle, since her parents are, interested to say the least, in guns. I remember (I saw this in a place but I might be wrong) that Caitlyn used her dad's gun at the competition, which we see him bragging with it while being drunk. It may be a family tradition, or "mark".

I actually didn't feel like Jayce felt anything other than showing consideration to his longtime friend at that scene, he also prepares himself to give the "bad news" to her, and bring his solution to keep her job as an enforcer, while he knows from the inside, this'll not do for Caitlyn like you mentioned. Who knows her more than Jayce until this point afterall? He knows she'd be too proud to "accept a handout". That awkwardness comes from these feelings in my opinion. But a "relationship possibility" is a nice, thought provoking perspective I have to say!
Caitlyn is so tense at the start of that scene, maybe she didn't think about other enforcers too much like you mentioned, but she was almost died there too. That made her more driven about finding the culprit. Doesn't matter what else going on in the world right now, "while the trail is hot".
I love to see a girl knows her things and corrects others with her knowledge smoothly (I'm into these kinds of moves, and probably "fell for Caitlyn" at that moment too, among other things... That's a whole another topic, could be titled as "why thunder falls for Caitlyn, and how can we explain to him that he has no chance because, apart from the obvious possibility of her being lesbian, she isn't a real human?"). So I especially love the little scene where she explains the difference between an airship and a blimp, with all "an airship... has a... rigid, metal... hull..." cuteness. She's so graceful! And I know that ignorant response hit me harder than it should have. "Hah, she tries to preach down on us about baloons. That know it all! Go attend your cocktail party you upper class spoiled brat!" It's so wrong, but this happens both ways in our world. Part of the class warfare I guess. And who warns you about that fire downtown? That upper class Piltie who takes her duties seriously, unlike you!

And yes, if I could bribe Caitlyn with flowers, I would, but I actually think she's more impressed with street smarts, compassion and intellect... How to put that in a bouquet??? (he he)
I think Caitlyn looked up to Grayson, their conversation has a huge impact on her, but I'm not sure how much she actually saw the woman. Either the competition is something Caitlyn's parents have set up to have Caitlyn compete against someone with more status, skill and clout than her usual opponents, or enrollment camps for enforcers start early... My guess is the former, because they don't seem to know each other well when they speak, and Grayson also explains that she's an enforcer (so they aren't a group of enforcer trainees duelling the boss...). And we know that Grayson dies at about that time, so she hasn't been her mentor during enforcer training. But despite seeing little of each other, Caitlyn felt the influence, but I think Jayce's influence is greater. And therefore the "betrayal" and patronising behaviour later feels worse for Caitlyn. So yeah, that could definitely be why he's nervous, because he knows he's on shaky ground with her for trying to bench her behind a desk...
I absolutely think that the family has a tradition for shooting (like old school British aristocracy), good observation! We see the family portrait is staged as a hunting trip and both the mother and father seems to know how to handle a rifle. But it's a skill you have to practice in order to get better at, your parents can't make you good. No amount of money can make you a good marksman (unless you pay off the competition like Caitlyn suspected), so this is something Caitlyn "owns" and possesses no thanks to her parents even if they did push her in that direction.
Yes, Caitlyn is sadly misunderstood, often because she is the smartest person in the room, but also because these smarts make it harder for her on a social level. I like your quote showing how she pauses in her sentence about the airship. Really reveals her almost shy comment, well meant, but totally misunderstood. Awwww! (yes, I love her more now too!!)

Yes, you're right. I overlooked the fact of the early death of Grayson. They don't have a bonding time, let alone getting "some mentorship" from her. That "What are you shooting for?" line probably evoked something in Caitlyn, then she designed her path from there. But since Grayson left too soon, she left with her only older and wiser friend Jayce. That makes the feelings of huge disappointment in Jayce much more understandable. And young Caitlyn learned more about how life works...
Yes, she definitely trained hard, all the breathing techniques, sniping with two eyes open and without a scope, she knows her stuff (I'm not an expert on guns, but I'm sold on the idea of her knowledge of using guns anyway haha). She has the detective material for all her life! Sadly, big thanks to her parents giving the sense of "you didn't succeed, we created this all for you" feeling, adding her a lack of self-confidence, the suspicions. But at least in the end, she proved herself to her mother, and most importantly to herself at the audience. Until that moment, she was only sure about her being an excellent shot, but now knows that she's an excellent detective too! She slowly sees what she's shooting for.

I noticed something funny about the flowers Jayce brings to Caitlyn, on which your thoughts would be appreciated! It seems to be the same bouquet of six flowers that Marcus' daughter has in her hands at the funeral of the six fallen officers. All the other flowers in the room (which get their own frame, so I think we're meant to notice them) seem like get-well baskets. I think this presents another interpretation: Jayce brought "I'm sorry for your loss" flowers, guessing that her mind would be on her dead colleagues rather than on herself. I think the idea that Caitlyn would be concerned about others before herself, especially including those of lower social class, would be a decent guess by Jayce.
I think this interpretation for the flowers can fit nicely with the "bad news" interpretation for his nervousness, and can also accentuate other aspects of her character that you point out, such as the lack of special attachment to her work colleagues (symbolically throwing the bouquet of six aside) and her distance from essentially everyone in her life (none of the other gifts show Jayce's insight and *edit: the envelopes on them are unopened*, and even his approach misses the mark).

In the game Caitlyn's hair is usually purple but in Arcane they changed it to a darker blue

Yes, Caitlyn doesn't think the mother is open to helping the undercity, which is why Caitlyn is so surprised when she'll give them an audience...
@@tildaowen I think there are 3 other reasons why she doesn't mention her mother status :
- her own safety. The daughter of a councilor would be a tempting target for a lot of people in the Undercity (kidnapping or retaliation).
- Vi. It's clear from the beginning that Caitlyn's status as an enforcer and a citizen of Piltover is a problem for Vi. She constantly reminds Caitlyn that her life was made miserable by Piltover's upper class and Caitlyn is probably anxious about Vi's reaction when she realizes Caitlyn's mom is partially responsible. That why she doesn't tell her who's house they are breaking into in episode 8.
- her independence. Caitlyn doesn't like how she's constantly associated with her mom. She probably took the habit to never mention her mother and even her last name. I'm sure "Kiramman ? Like the councilor ?" is a reply she heard too much after introducingherself. Caitlyn wants to prove her worth by herself, through her skills and not her name.
@@Morbacounet I agree, all those things factor into why she doesn't give her back story, and also there really isn't much time to chat in their jam packed trek across the undercity... But I still think it goes beyond that, in that she has a hard time in general expressing herself verbally...
@@tildaowen I totally agree with you. Caintlyn speaks a lot but she doesn't tell much about herself and her feelings. She compensates by touch, hugs mainly. And when touch isn't enough (on the bridge in episode 7, after the council in episode 8), it's clear she boiling inside but she just can't find the words. I think one of the first scenes in season two will be Caitlyn finally having a real conversation with Vi about her feelings.

Excellent question, yes, I've wracked my brain, but I haven't really come up with anything plausible... Maybe we need to ask a league gamer? The two keys could symbolise that Caitlyn can unlock things? Because she is such a good investigator? But it's thin, also because of the symbol in the middle that kind of looks like a Cyrillic letter, but isn't... 🤔😒🤯

As you pointed out, the symbol is most prominently highlighted on the bullet from her flashback -- even her one escape from her overbearing parents is indelibly marked by them.
The symbol in the middle looks to me like a mirrored K, presumably for Kiramman, but it's been pointed out that the lower diagonal stroke is most obvious part of the crest that is not well mirrored, which seems notable.

@Ala_Emi My take on the crest has always been rather straightforward, and tied to her family name: Kirraman, or (my own interpretation here) those who make keys; i.e. Locksmiths. One can imagine that her family made their name (literally) crafting locks, a task that has traditions linking it to both clockwork (very essential to Piltover's culture, thus resulting in their immense power and influence) and (equally telling) gunsmithing in it's relying on precision and attention to detail, traits that very are very much embodied in Cait.
@Tilda Owen (assuming you read this); As a side note, appreciate your acknowledgement of Cait's father's role in her life. It seems clear from the post-bridge explosion scene that he is a medical doctor of some sort, as suggested by his personal kit of medical tools as well as his skill and assuredness in their use (another life-path requiring patience, precision, and a steady hand, but also compassion...hmmmmm...who do we know who is like that in the show?🤔😋). The family name is quite obviously not his, considering the dynamics at play. Could it be that Cait's mom also initiated a relationship with someone "below her station"? I'm guessing the apple doesn't fall far from the tree here.

I don't think Tobias is a doctor necessarily... If he was, he would have cut open Caitlyn's pant leg to properly get to the wound. I think it looks like a first aid kit with scissors and tweezers... That he takes care of the wound, does show, however, that he is meticulous and compassionate like Caitlyn (cp. "easy, easy" and the handkerchief), she definitely has it from him!
So yes, it's a matriarchy, Kiramman is Cassandra's name, and Tobias is the trophy husband... I actually don't think at all that Cassandra would marry down, not from the way Caitlyn sees her, but I may be proved wrong with a flashback next season 😊

I agree with you that when you see a title that says "Jayce brings Caitlyn flowers", it pushes you in the direction of romantic interest! In general I think friendship between men and women in modern media is a little oversimplified in that you often ship them together and the general (prejudiced) idea is that guys always want to shag the girl (especially if she's beautiful) even if they are friends. Maybe I fell into that oversimplified way of thinking? But flowers and teasing are definitely common tropes in fiction done in order to show romantic interest...
But there's not enough evidence in the show (so far) to either prove or disprove my theory, so let's leave it there :-)
I'm not going to speculate much on what I think will happen in season 2 in my next video, but I do say a little about what I think ought to happen, and perhaps even what is likely to happen (but very little).
I don't know if someone already said this but I heard Caitlyn is suppose to be taller than Jayce but in the scenes in the show it depends on whose in power. Between Jayce and Caitlyn, men is suppose to be taller than women so Jayce is taller. Someone joke about this that if Jayce is shorter to Caitlyn then he has no rights. As a short guy this kinda hurts haha. If I'm also not mistaken, Mel is taller to Jayce in the scenes between them even tho she's suppose to be shorter because of her political power. So it depends.
I actually think Jayce is the tallest of all the characters (though I haven't checked), perhaps with the exception of Vander. Embessa is the only woman who's close to him in height. Caitlyn is definitely shorter than Jayce, but she's taller than Vi. The display of power is shown in various ways, by camera angles and perspectives, as well as physical positioning. E.g. When Vi talks to the councilors who are sitting, she is in the middle where the floor is lowered so she is below them or at least on a level and not towering over them...
Yeah you're right! For their original height, Caitlyn was supposed to be 185cm (6'1) and Jayce 184cm (6ft). So yes 1 cm taller than Jayce. But the height of all characters did changed during production. In this video (m.ua-cam.com/users/shortsSMwJBTVNfpY), you can see the original height of each character and the youtuber' take on their height. (Their height has not been yet confirmed). He made some small mistakes with the metric and imperial system. Because 172cm is 5'8 rounded, 185cm is 6'1, and 190cm is 6'3.
I presume Jayce is one of the tallest. But he's not as tall as people believe. A lot of people think Jayce is ~2m (6'7) because he's shown half a head taller than Caitlyn who was "confirmed"? being ~6ft by an animator (mobile.twitter.com/evan_monteiro/status/1464835034485981186). And according to this animator, they fudge the height of all characters in every scenes for aesthetic reasons LOL. So you can't use the show to determine their official height. Arcane height is a real MESS... hahaha. They should just release the official height of all characters, so no more confusion :).

hahaha when i first saw the show (knowing nothing about it and im talking about the first 3-4 episodes) i thought Jayce and Caitlyn would be husband and wife in the end... man was i wrong 🤡
Yes, things certainly take some unexpected twists and turns along the way... Part of what makes the show so great!
@@tildaowen Hum, funny I thought Caitlyn could had some sort of admiration crush on Jayce when she was a child (before the time jump lets not forget she was around 14-15 and Jayce 24) , but as you said after the time jump Jayce was the one going after her. Anyways this pair was weird for me since they have 10 years age gap, and I was relieved when he was with Mel for some reason. Jayce was a sort of confident for her and probably her only friend since none of her enforcers colleagues took her seriously and she did not feel very confortable with the Pilties high class fellows and we don't know if she may had a girlfriend during that 7 years gap which probably happened since she was way too comfortable with the girl at the brothel . Although she did not tell Vi much about herself, Vi realized by herself what sort of person Cait was by her actions , she trusted her and started to have feelings for her because of that. Cait learnt how VI life has been and probably being an overprotected only child was not that big of a deal, compared to what Vi has endured. However both share something , the need to protect the ones they love and if Cassandra dies, losing love ones too. Just my two cents.

Hmmmm have to disagree with you about Caitlyn being a sniper... the only thing missing from her rifle is the scope which will be on her Hextech rifle when she gets it in season 2.
I see what you mean, a scope can signify a sniper, but not only that, it can also just be a sharpshooter or a hunter. If she even gets it (can't wait for season 2!)... But even if she does, a scope doesn't make her a sniper. She doesn't stalk her prey unseen and shoot from afar, never facing her opponent. She is a sharpshooter, precise and efficient, making clean shots with as little risk as possible. So partly a sniper? But definitely not in all ways the word is understood...
@@tildaowen I've played as Caitlyn in League of Legends and you can use your Ult and snipe players from 1 side of the map to the other depending on your build you can potentially 1 shot them and they won't even know your targeting them...
Yes, but that's the game... Might not be the same in the show, a lot of lore has changed as far as I'm told... If and when it happens in the show, then I'll address its meaning, not before then 😊
@@tildaowen Look forwards to it... although unlike the game Arcane Caitlyn will not likely face off against champions from Noxus, Damacia, Ionia Shurima, The Void or The long dead Camavor where the undead King Viego hails from.
