- Ever wondered how skis are made?
The Ski Club headed down to Nix Snowsport Company's workshop in Caledonian Road, North London to find out how these planks we love to strap to our feet are constructed. Started by James Mechie out of curiosity and the desire to tailor skis and snowboards to different riding styles, the company has been creating beautiful handmade skis and snowboards since 2017.
Discover how the skis are layed up and the incredible number of layers that goes into the construction before they are cured in a heated press and then finished by hand.

Hello, your videos are very interesting, I have a question I am thinking of making a snowboard, my concern is how to outline the core, the rail system with a router works well, I want to leave the ends at 2 mm and 6.5 mm the center, I could have a core professional with this system. thank you
Does the ski have a springback in the rocker when removed from the press, or does it remain the same shape?
How do you test them with you being based in London? It’s something I’d like to do from the UK but I wasn’t sure if you’d need snow/ ski resort nearby to test them.
And now I’m good to go.
Interesting, but skipped the design process and the bit about how the metal edges are fixed to the ptex base prior to epoxying. Also no base waxing seems to have been done at the end!
Hey, glad you liked the video. All of James' skis are waxed before they go out of course, but we wanted to focus on the general construction of the skis in this video. There are also a couple more finishing steps that were not shown (sealing the sidewalls to prevent moisture from getting in being one). Ok nice job,but he is making huge mistake,no protection side walls.Core is naked and that will reduce the ski durability,except if you are gonna buy every winter new pair of skis...
