Sounds like you know something about Bay Shore....Please share. Today I'm going to Bay Shore High School to walk the halls again. I'm a graduate of the class of 1970. I have an appointment with the Principal. I have a strong connection to this area. My family moved here in Oct. 1963. So, maybe you could add something positive to such a very nice tribute to Bay Shore. Looking forward to it, Thomas!
Bay Shire was known as Mechanicsville in the day it was the end of the line and Long Island Railroad terminal. This terminal ad a giant circular turnaround. Where trains were revolved around to return to New York City. The original area was home to a tribe of native Indians. The Penataquit hence the original name. This tribe were known as great fisherman as the access to the abundant Great South Bay had made them so. The mainstreet fell into disrepair and lost its vibrancy in the early 1960's as malls had come into favor for shopping. Sadly to this day mainstreet business has yet to revive.
Actually Main Street is starting to come back they’re building all these new apartment complexes all around Main Street with all new shops and offices so I’m confident that the bay shore downtown area will be as well as it was back in the day
Actually there was no tribe known as the Penataquit the people called themselves the Secatogue. they "sold" the land for three eel spears. they did not believe the land belonged to anyone.
Where DO you get your information from. Bay Shore is totally revitalized and has been for a very long time. The downtime is thriving, and so is the township itself. It is again a place of destination for surrounding towns. the onetime "Miracle Mile," is now restaurant row. On any evening during the week, we have folks coming to our restaurants, parking fuggedabout it. And you got your tribe wrong as well.
Hey Tom Santorelli.....since you "seem" to know a lot about Bay Shore, why don't you share. Please explain exactly why Pricilla is wrong and tell us the real story. Thanks for your expertise.
